Johnson: ‘You want fans that care’

Some of the more interesting answers from Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson at his Monday post-practice interview:

On Tech converting most of its takeaways into points:

“It’s possessions, because what happens is every time that you turn the ball over, you lose a chance to score. It’ a possession. We had done a pretty good job of that for most of the year and then Saturday, we turn it over on two plays on a hitch pass, we turn it over on the first play or the second play on an option, you turn it over on the first play of a drive with 8 minutes (left) with a deflection for an interception, and that’s all chances that you don’t have to score. It takes away your chances. So on the flipside, when you get one on defense it gives you another possession, another chance to score. That’s why they were so big in the game. And then we killed our possession in the second half with a penalties to start the second half. End up 2nd and 25.”

On if he had put his finger on an explanation for Tech’s lack of energy Saturday:

“No. If I knew… It’s disappointing and it’s unacceptable and I think our guys know it’s unacceptable. You move forward. Like I said, you’re not going to get anywhere looking backwards. Quit moping, quit pouting, and let’s go play.”

On special-teams play being improved:

“Except fumbling the kick, except getting a penalty, except both times they punted, we take over on the 4 and the 12, but other than that, it was great. But it was the lesser of the evils.”

On the success MTSU had throwing quick outs by blocking cornerbacks:

“We had some guys who were supposed to be buzzing the flats who weren’t buzzing the flats. I think they played good. Should we have lost the game? No, but we did.”

On if he’d received any encouraging e-mails or phone calls from colleagues or friends:

“Not really. Last time I looked, we were 2-3, not 0-97. I would think most people wouldn’t even be thinking about it. But, clearly, you guys are. I get e-mails every week whether we win or lose, and most of them are telling me what I need to do, whether we win or lose.”

On everybody having an opinion:

“But that’s part of it. You want fans that care. If they didn’t care, they wouldn’t be very good fans. We’re disappointed, too. I promise you. Nobody’s more disappointed than I am. But I certainly haven’t given up. It’s not like oh, shoot, the season’s lost. We’ve still got a lot to play.”

On Morgan Bailey’s play in the second half:

“He moved some people around. He’s got great ability. Hopefully, he can stay out and have a good week of practice and we can play him. I’ve said from the jump, the kid’s got great ability. If he can just stay healthy, he’ll really help us.”

In case you missed it…

I am wondering where are the Tech trolls are in the UGA blogs?? Oh yeah, kind of difficult to troll another teams site when your team is horrible and has no heart. :)

Need some info.
Just woke up from a 4 year coma.
I’m doing fine. Thank’s for asking.
Is the triple option completely unstoppable now, and has anyone been able to find and answer to Coach Groh’s impenetrable defense?

What happened?
I fell off the railing at Bobby Dodd, when one of my fellow tech fans played a double wizard card on me and I reacted poorly. Note to self, Zima + jolly ranchers = poor judgement.

@ old dog……Thanks for your comments. You already know I appreciate the things that you post on here. Not sure you are aware of it, but there is an “Old Dog”, who also posts, and he is obviously a troll.
And, BTW, I doubt you can tell the difference, but all but two of the posts attributed to me since 2:23PM were by my name thief. I posted one calling him out, and now this one—none of the others were made by me. He is a clever little child though, in that he thinks by pretending that I am the imposter, he has people fooled. He seldom fools anybody, however, and the staff at the AJC are on to him.
Anyway, thanks for your always kind and intelligent posts.

Our defense couldn’t stop the local geriatric unit from scoring 35 points. This isn’t about players; this is, and was, about the coach(es).

Five game in the month of September. I’d say they got tired legs so their reactions are off. We ask a lot of our student athletes. Our kids get out of bed and go to class. I don’t think you can say that about every school. And, let’s face it, MTS was up for this game and they wanted it a bit more.

@ George……it IS true about some of the players. If I had your email address, I could email you some observations that were passed on to me by someone “in the know” about Johnson and the team. If you will send an email to my TEMPORARY address (supersizeorder@yahoo.com) and offer some kind of “proof” that you are who you say you are, I will send those observations to you. Some of it might surprise you.

@ Old Dog… sorry but you’re wrong about CPJ. When a team shows up and is not ready to play, it’s the head coach’s fault. When the defence hasn’t got a clue and can’t tackle, it’s the head coach’s fault. When three of the best wide receivers in the nfl were hardly used in college, it’s the head coach’s fault. Cpj is a good coach, but he’s to prideful to make needed changes. Just plain stuborn.
Doing the same thing over an over and expecting a different result is insane.

We lost last Saturday and it’s now Tuesday… It’s time to move on. No one on this blog has the power to change the starting line up or the coach, so get over it. Like him or not, CPJ is still the head coach and he makes all the decisions. Even if GT wanted to fire him, they don’t have the money and probably couldn’t raise it. I believe our guys will be up for this game and will likely beat a very good Clemson team. We can still have a very good year if we win out. Go Jackets!

Time to start doing game prep. The Clemson team is almost as young as Tech. They have 4 senior starters on offense and 4 on defense. Tech has 3 and 3 when everybody is healthy. They have about the same number of freshmen on the depth chart, redshirts and true freshmen. I’m not counting Gotsis, but I guess he may see action in this game, too.

Let me make this as clear as I can to you ignorant Johnson lovers – Al G haters:

Practice makes perferct. I am sure we can agree on that.

Every day in “Practice” our D practices French.

On Sat, our D takes a “Spanish” test.

Simple… French is a useless language that no one speaks in the real world, and not on Sunday when you are paid to speak it.

ALMOST EVERYONE (except us & Navy) speak Spanish.

So when other teams start speaking Spanish, and AG trys to make adjustments to speaking Spanish, and our guys dont understand and end up out of place and get gashed.

So when he says “Cinco, Cinco!” Which means tight end slant, or cuatro, which means bubble screen, our D does not understand, because they have never practiced against it, and they FAIL the test.

Simple…so blame the D all you want, but it is the genius’s “system” that is killing the program.

The same argument can be made for Tevins crappy passing, crappy catching, recruiting, butts in seats and donations.

PJ being anything like Spurrier is rediculous. Ol’e ball coach would have yanked Tevin’s butt after the first two series of the VaTech game. AL BUNDY is correct though, all the bickering in the world on blogs won’t change Johnson’s mind but for him to continue to start Tevin IMO is just insane. Then again he does keep repeating it over and over. I know the defense is a bigger problem than TW but one man is much easier to replace than your entire scheme. Hope we come to scrap against Clemson.

I’m a UGA fan and even I care. I’ve been pulling for Johnson to make this thing work. I believe a coaching change will be extremely troublesome. His recruits are specific to his offense. So it will take years to get the right players for a spread or pro offense.

I am a UGA fan but… please don’t think I am trolling here.

I watched some of GT’s last game. I felt bad that a team from Georgia was being so humiliated in front of a fan base so damned loyal. GT fans will go through hell and never hide their colors, which is more than you can say for many schools in both the ACC and SEC when things get tight.

So, a salute to Tech fans for hanging tough. Things will get better for yall.

Can’t beat Georgia and can’t win a bowl game.
This was supposed to be the year that Johnson and Groh (fire him too) had all of their recruits in place.

the sooner the better.

George….It appears you are one of the “short bus” kids, so I will explain yet again:

That Sh**t offfense is EASILY EASILY stopped. That is why NO-ONE runs it.

Here goes: D game plan: 9-10 men in the box, 1 or 2 back. Simple.

If you pay attention, we run the same 3 plays 80% of the time. You dont even need to guess to be right most of the time. The full back dive & tevin up the middle go for 1-2 yards 8 out of 10 times. Fact.

Since we run 95% of the time (another fact) and drop half of the passes thrown, plus the ones that wobble sideways, off the turf 15yrds from anyone in Gold, why bother having DB’s anywhere but on the ends of the line or as extra LB’s?

The down the line “option” play (left or right) goes for 3-4 yards 70% of the time. Fact.

Since year 2 of the Johnson nightmare, we have been well under .500 once you toss out the Blue Ho’s kinda teams. Yrs 1 & 2 as we all know were flukes….

So I say it again, IF you want to defend against the ever popular “forward pass” I expect practicing against it day in and day out just might help.

Come game time, if you might “need” to throw the ball?? Practicing the fullback dive for the 48th gazillion time aint going to help.

So keep on speaking French my friend…right down to 4-8….yr in and year out….
