Notes: Johnson to Tech team: ‘Quit pouting’

1. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s message to his team was fitting for a rainy Monday two days after a humbling loss – get over it.

Monday, the Yellow Jackets reviewed game video from their 49-28 loss to Middle Tennessee State, corrected errors in practice and did conditioning work. Among the most notable shortcomings addressed was Tech’s inability to match the Blue Raiders’ energy on Saturday.

“It’s disappointing and it’s unacceptable and I think our guys know it’s unacceptable,” Johnson said following practice. “You move forward. Like I said, you’re not going to get anywhere looking backwards. Quit moping, quit pouting and let’s go play.”

From his review of the game, the same flaws that Johnson noted following the game – poor tackling, low energy and mistakes – held true.

“Bottom line, you’re not going to win a football game when you turn it over four times and you let the other back (MTSU’s Benny Cunningham) rush for 220 yards,” he said. “You’re just not.”

Johnson didn’t know the number of missed tackles off the top of his head, he said, “but it was bad.” He said a handful of players were responsible for most of them.

The Jackets have a whale of a challenge Saturday – a road game at No. 15 Clemson, a team itching for payback from its 31-17 loss last October at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Johnson said that, despite the embarrassing loss to MTSU, players were upbeat Monday.

“That’s the way you’ve got to be,” Johnson said. “You’ve still got a chance.”

2. Outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu and cornerback Louis Young, both of whom sat out Saturday’s game with injuries, practiced Monday and are expected to play against Clemson. Offensive lineman Will Jackson, who missed the second half due to illness, also practiced Monday.

Johnson said he is not hopeful for safety Fred Holton, who has yet to play this season due to a foot injury, to play Saturday.

On the Clemson side, All-America wide receiver Sammy Watkins is expected to play after missing Saturday’s win over Boston College with an abdominal virus.

Johnson also confirmed that B-back Charles Perkins is out for the season with an undisclosed injury. Two weeks ago, Johnson said that Perkins was out and that he didn’t expect him back anytime soon. Also, punter Sean Poole’s injury, suffered against Miami Sept. 22, is a broken collarbone. A return this season does not appear likely.

Johnson said he was encouraged by the play of offensive tackle Morgan Bailey, who received playing time in the second half in Jackson’s absence. Bailey has been a promising player but has been sidelined with numerous injuries. Saturday was his first game this season.

“He moved some people around,” Johnson said. “He’s got great ability. Hopefully he can stay out and have a good week of practice and we can play him. I’ve said from the jump, the kid’s got great ability.”

3. Quarterback Tevin Washington is tied for most rushing touchdowns in the country with 11. Nevada running back Stefphon Jefferson also has 11. Washington tied a school single-game record Saturday with four rushing touchdowns. The single-season school record for touchdowns is 19, set by Robert Lavette in 1982. With 29 career rushing touchdowns, Washington is six behind Joshua Nesbitt’s record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

4. Junior linebacker Chris Crenshaw will wear No. 40 against Clemson in honor of former linebacker Julian Burnett. Crenshaw will be the first non-senior to wear the jersey to pay tribute to Burnett, who suffered a career-ending neck injury in the Sun Bowl. … Clemson opened Monday as a 10-point favorite over the Jackets.

In case you missed it…

If I may offer a little outside perspective Techies, one thing I’ve noticed about Tech under Johnson that seems to be lost on a lot of you is its lack of mental toughness. Lose a tough game and you fold for the rest of the season. Your team simply looked disinterested against us last year too, like they could have cared less about winning. We also hear a lot about Tech getting complacent and satisfied with itself. That’s my favorite because it obviously begs the question what in the hell Tech football has done that would make it satisfied with itself. That’s laughable.

Anyway, this Johnson fella just doesn’t seem like the best motivator to me. You have to wonder what his players really think about him. There’s got to be some trust and mutual respect there and I’m not sure you’ve got it. Sorry Techies.

Thanks.

I’ve been a big supporter of PJ since he was at Ga Southern. He’s done a good job everywhere he’s been. However, after the last two games, I’m not so sure about him. He’s never been able to put together a really strong defense- no matter who the DC is. Also, Tech has proven even in it’s best years it simply can’t stand up physically to strong teams (LSU, UGA, Iowa, etc). If they don’t turn it around, PJ, Groh and the rest need to go. Try for Kirby Smart- someone who knows how to coach a defense.

I don’t expect us to even beat the spread (-10) against Clemson, so why not play Vad Lee? As a fan, I won’t get upset if he fumbles 3 times or throws 2 picks. I”ll just be happy that he’s getting experience and working out the kinks for next year. CPJ has to know that he doesn’t have any room for error to win and win big next year or he’s out the door…so as a coach trying to protect his job, why not play your best athlete now and prep him for next year…..b/c he’s CPJ and he’s got bigger fish to fry. Tired of that line….

I really miss my old friend Chan…

Chan was a very pleasant person. I’ve heard many say that if you don’t want your kid to sign with GT, don’t let Chan into your living room. Chan sold the school because he believed in it. He overcame the negative recruiting by other coaches by touting our tutoring program.

He was hit by a short recruiting period on his first year, and then by grade gate from an antagonist on the hill, and then he got clobbered by the NCAA sanctions and loss of scholarships that occurred under O’leary’s watch.

During Chan’s tenure, there were people who opposed him as soon as he arrived because he honored his contract with the Dolphins instead of running straight to the flats. Honor and integrity counts for nothing among some of our fans. Inspite of all the obstacles, Chan kept our heads above water and built a player base that his replacement got to enjoy while our fans criticized him and could hardly wait until he was gone. In retrospect, Chan wasn’t so bad…

GT gear,

You’re dead wrong about recruiting top players or a QB play that will play the option game. Look no farther than Vad Lee. He was a top QB recruit from NC, recruited by a number of schools as a QB. Now, crawl back in your hole or serve up those waffles and eggs at Waffle House.
________________

Vad was Recruited by maybe 4 or 5 schools as a QB, everyone else wanted Vad as a WR or “Athlete”.

GT, Vandy, Minnesota, NC State initially wanted him as a WR but then changed it to QB when they thought they would lose him to GT, maybe Dook & Wake wanted him as a QB.

That list is not exactly a Who’s Who among colleges that put QBs in the NFL.

Vad is not the can’t miss-QB prospect that every GT fan thinks he is.

At best Vad is a borderline D1-A QB, and is a huge question mark as a BCS-level QB.

If Vad were so can’t miss as a QB he would have beaten out TW by now!

Facts: When you practice all spring defending the TO you will fail when you play real balanced offenses!! College and Pro football are copy cat leagues! Tell me why no one will copy CPJ’s sorry TO offense! It is boring, boring, boring!!! From Duke to FSU most of the ACC runs offenses that can pass and produce balance!!!! So now lets go out and hire our third DC!! The results will be even worse next season!!

We got caught flat footed against a team that proved to be a ‘trap game’ for us….we got trapped! The advantage Tech now has is they have nothing to lose. They will eek out at least 4 wins somehow and go to a bowl far from home in early Dec. but they won’t win this weekend. While Tech has nothing to lose, Clemson has quite a lot to lose. Clemson covers 10. And bad talk really begins.

Last year we came into the Clemson game on a low note too. That said it is not important what CPJ said yesterday, AG is the man who needs to step up and if he does, does that dismiss this horrible performance? Do we want a defense coordinator who picks when he shows up? I wonder if we will ever know what happen Saturday, but I am betting if it happens this Saturday we will know for sure and the sad thing is Tech’s defense may not lay down against Clemson and still give up 600 yards.

People don’t go to Tech games because they are not involved in meaningful games. They left the SEC because they didn’t want to share revenue. Going independent like Notre Dame allowed them to keep all the loot. But there was no league to win and much fewer meaningful games. What made sense to them at the time ignored the fact that much of their success came from their league association. Even now, about the only games that fill their stadium is when there is a SEC opponent. The tradition is gone. Except for UGA, there are no more neighborhood rivalries.

To a point I agree with CPJ… Stop pouting.. But at the same time… The players have lost trust in their coaches. Especially on the defensive end. I think they no longer respect CAG. When the players lose respect, it’s a problem. “no show” needs to go. He is not aggressive and that flows down to the players. I know that CPJ will wait until the end of the year.. But, by that time, it will be too late. With Groh in charge of the “D” I fear the GT’s bowl streak is coming to an end.

Jmonty, I don’t think the ‘O’ side of the ball is questioning CPJ’s system…we’ve suffered some poor losses this season that suggests that we haven’t gotten over the ‘head games’ that come in crunch time. After watching the game this past Saturday, it appeared to me that our guys were just waiting for MTSU to fold and give up…they didn’t and we were too flat to respond. Our D side of the ball is another story…I’m questioning the 3-4 D for this team….to this point, it hasn’t proved to be a good fit for our players.

I hope they will put the past in the past and focus on winning the rest of their games. Go Jackets!

On the upcoming UNC game, Tech has won the past 2 by 6 pts in each game. The way I see it is, which team is improved over last yr? In my opinion UNC is much better under Fedora. They are 2 plays from being undefeated. Can’t say the same for Tech. Long day for Tech in Chapel Hill I’m afraid.

Jmonty

October 2nd, 2012
12:13 pm

Al Groh doesn’t run the 3-4 correct.. That’s the first issue. With the players we have I think a 5-2 defense would fit better. But, that’s just my opinion. But, even in a 3-4 the OLB are always moving and blitzing. Al Groh, doesn’t disguise blitzes very well.. (when he does blitz). On 3rd and long… He plays scared prevent defense. He is not aggressive and I think that personality trickles down to the players. Either the players are ignoring him and not listening…or Al Groh is ill prepared and doesn’t go for the kill, when needed. Sorry… There are enough people blaming the players. I am not one of those people. I see poor preparation on the coaching staff. (Mostly the “D”) They fail to blitz or even delayed blitzes through the 2 or 3 gap. Gap assignments themselves are not even followed. So, where does the blame lie? If players aren’t taught properly, it shows on the field. Unfortunately, we will see that each and every game. Groh is not the right person for the job.
