Notes: Johnson to Tech team: ‘Quit pouting’

1. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s message to his team was fitting for a rainy Monday two days after a humbling loss – get over it.

Monday, the Yellow Jackets reviewed game video from their 49-28 loss to Middle Tennessee State, corrected errors in practice and did conditioning work. Among the most notable shortcomings addressed was Tech’s inability to match the Blue Raiders’ energy on Saturday.

“It’s disappointing and it’s unacceptable and I think our guys know it’s unacceptable,” Johnson said following practice. “You move forward. Like I said, you’re not going to get anywhere looking backwards. Quit moping, quit pouting and let’s go play.”

From his review of the game, the same flaws that Johnson noted following the game – poor tackling, low energy and mistakes – held true.

“Bottom line, you’re not going to win a football game when you turn it over four times and you let the other back (MTSU’s Benny Cunningham) rush for 220 yards,” he said. “You’re just not.”

Johnson didn’t know the number of missed tackles off the top of his head, he said, “but it was bad.” He said a handful of players were responsible for most of them.

The Jackets have a whale of a challenge Saturday – a road game at No. 15 Clemson, a team itching for payback from its 31-17 loss last October at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Johnson said that, despite the embarrassing loss to MTSU, players were upbeat Monday.

“That’s the way you’ve got to be,” Johnson said. “You’ve still got a chance.”

2. Outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu and cornerback Louis Young, both of whom sat out Saturday’s game with injuries, practiced Monday and are expected to play against Clemson. Offensive lineman Will Jackson, who missed the second half due to illness, also practiced Monday.

Johnson said he is not hopeful for safety Fred Holton, who has yet to play this season due to a foot injury, to play Saturday.

On the Clemson side, All-America wide receiver Sammy Watkins is expected to play after missing Saturday’s win over Boston College with an abdominal virus.

Johnson also confirmed that B-back Charles Perkins is out for the season with an undisclosed injury. Two weeks ago, Johnson said that Perkins was out and that he didn’t expect him back anytime soon. Also, punter Sean Poole’s injury, suffered against Miami Sept. 22, is a broken collarbone. A return this season does not appear likely.

Johnson said he was encouraged by the play of offensive tackle Morgan Bailey, who received playing time in the second half in Jackson’s absence. Bailey has been a promising player but has been sidelined with numerous injuries. Saturday was his first game this season.

“He moved some people around,” Johnson said. “He’s got great ability. Hopefully he can stay out and have a good week of practice and we can play him. I’ve said from the jump, the kid’s got great ability.”

3. Quarterback Tevin Washington is tied for most rushing touchdowns in the country with 11. Nevada running back Stefphon Jefferson also has 11. Washington tied a school single-game record Saturday with four rushing touchdowns. The single-season school record for touchdowns is 19, set by Robert Lavette in 1982. With 29 career rushing touchdowns, Washington is six behind Joshua Nesbitt’s record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

4. Junior linebacker Chris Crenshaw will wear No. 40 against Clemson in honor of former linebacker Julian Burnett. Crenshaw will be the first non-senior to wear the jersey to pay tribute to Burnett, who suffered a career-ending neck injury in the Sun Bowl. … Clemson opened Monday as a 10-point favorite over the Jackets.

In case you missed it…

@win or lose -

Violating NCAA rules was right for the players how?

Vacating an ACC scholarship was right for the players how?

Losing scholarships was the right thing for the players?

How?

I know they were flat as a pancake on Sat-cant say that I blame them after seeing 50,000+ the week before and coming out of the tunnel to a HALF EMPTY STADIUM! Give me a break! These kids are 18-22 yrs old! They NEED us there backing em up! I know Tech doesnt have a huge alumni/fanbase but where were all those wearing gold and white from the Miami game?

@ greta im going to answer those questions the way I think they were.

1. I think that it wasnt right but the one that violated them was replaced. 2. I didnt know the acc gave schlorships but the championship was over a player now in the pros.3. I didnt know anyone lost schlorships on this coaching staff so let me know if thats the case. and if you had any management skills what so ever lets say you work in a bank as the president. You hire your friend thats a teller and they get caught stealing money months later, do you fire all the tellers or just the one? Or wait maybe what your saying as the principal stock holder of the bank someone you hired stole from me and you wasnt there to catch them so ill keep the thief and fire you! You see your post is a bit nuts im thinking

Don’t ask greta she just lost her position as president of the bank because one of the tellers she trusted stole because she trusted them to do there job and wasnt able to watch them every second they was there. Dang how would that be right greta? Yeah we all need to realise these are kids and they and the coaches need our support not some idiots yelling at them from the bleachers.

At times, there are just too many mistakes- from tackling to the schemes… Don’t care for the 3-4, due to lack of pressure. Most anyone is able to get several yards rushing when they spread it out on us. Then, we give too much cushion on the receivers. As soon as the corner blitzes, the hot read goes to the open receiver there. We seem to sell out too early. If we could get some sacks on the QBs that would help. Why are teams able to go to the short dump offs and get 15 yards after the catch- we will go for the low percentage deep throw. Guaranteed, short passes will open up the game for everything else. Meanwhile, our offense needs to put some people on their asses… where was the blocking we saw against UVA? Likewise, we are slow to pick up on what the other team is doing and stop it. That said, I will support the team- We Can beat any team on the schedule, but we need to play smart and mistake free(as much as possible).

Toe, well said, I don’t think the team is any happier than we fans are. Fan whining, moaning and complaining sure won’t help them either. I remember being in Grant Field the day Clemson beat us for the first time in 26 years…we thought the world had ended. Of course, it almost did with the succession of ineffective coaches for many years after that :) Look at scores around the country this past weekend. Very few teams have defenses, most of the scores are shoot outs. While our D is a bit smelly, it appears that defenses in general are way behind offenses. When the players get their heads back on straight, actually block like they are capable of and tackle the same way, things will be better…not great, but better. I just want a team that plays their ass off, hustles on every play, plays to the best of their ability and has someone in every game step up and make something happen. It doesn’t matter that’s not a “game winning play”, but make it an obvious “above and beyond the call of duty” play that will inspire a teammate. I don’t expect perfection or grandiose W-L records, but I do expect to see a Ga Tech team that acts like a Tech team, has grit and pride in their play and pushes through when things just don’t go their way. Maligning the coaches and players certainly doesn’t help our players or the Tech community, and it certainly doesn’t increase our stature in the college sports world.I wasn’t happy with a number of previous coaches, but the world didn’t end then either. Besides, I remember when folks wanted to fire Coach Dodd because he was only 7-3, 7-2-1, 8-2, etc. I say we need to support our team and let them know we believe they are better than the last 2 weeks show, and we are in it with them.

I am dissapointed; however, I am still a die-hard GT fan!

Coach PJ should tell Tevin Washington (behind closed doors to make sure the opposing teams are unaware) that if he calls his own number inside the 5 yard line again this season that he will ride the bench the remainder of the game! Obviously if the defense collapses on the B-Back dive play, he should make the correct read; but he has hurt the team too many times this season trying to pad his personal TD numbers.

Washington appears to be too interested in padding his TD numbers rather than running the offense and/or the best play based on the defensive front. The A-Backs and B-Backs have worked just as hard as Washington and deserve the chance at TD runs inside the 5 yard line………………run the offensive scheme and give the running backs the dang ball based on the read!!!!!

Can’t believe you Tech fans, cutting your team down. Players read these blogs and contrary to what you may think some of the coaches do too.
Players also look up in the stands on Saturdays and they notice that there’s only 25,000 fans in a 58,000 seat stadium.
Gotta support these guys, even in our losing season a few years ago, at UGA we still had a sellout on Saturdays.
Tech’s coaches are not coaching these players to not play their best,
Maybe a few more fans in the seats on Saturdays would mean a better showing from the team and it’s coaches.

I think we were dinged scholarships by NCAA, sure didn’t make friends or represent tech well with the folks who regulate our athletic department. Read AJC article for details regarding investigation etc. if you want your head out the sand.

Did it not Cost a ACC championship under his watch. You can delegate authority only, not responsibility. I think I remember this from my Management degree at GT. Correct me please if I am wrong.

I comply with regulators daily because it is the right thing to do for my team and my clients.

If it were the head teller, yes, fired. Didn’t know it was ok for any teller to steal, but UGA runs the banks in GA, SO?

You know, we have a lot more to worry about in this country than Tech winning a football game. We have a corrupt president, a corrupt congress, and a corrupt supreme court. If you have a scandal among a coaching staff (Penn State), you fire them and put them in jail. We are going to have to do the same to the powers that be or very soon there will be no college football season…ever.

IMNTBHO…..all any fan has the “right” to expect from their team. To be competitive! To put itself in a position to win at the end the game! To compete for the conference championship! To actually be the champion every now & again! To be competitive against their #1 rival & beat said rival every now & again! Maybe be “lucky” enough to even be in the mix for the MNC every now & again & maybe actually upsey the applecart & win it! If the fan’s team can just be competitive, all of the rest will fall in place. Like any business, it was not created to give us a job. No college/institution was created to give us a sports team to cheer for….that is supposed to secondary. Do we want/expect more? Do we want/expect to win like Alabama? Many fans answer those questions yes. Will they get their wish? Not likely. Enjoy your team’s successes & hurt for their losses. And live with both. And always have pride in your”s & their achievements. Wear your colors proudly. Selah.
