UPDATED: Tech humbled by MTSU, 49-28

Georgia Tech did not need overtime to falter Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets, uninspired and perhaps still groggy from its second crushing overtime loss of the season a week ago, required only the regulation 60 minutes to capitulate. Tech was force-fed the worst loss of coach Paul Johnson’s five-year tenure, a 49-28 defeat to Middle Tennessee State at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

MTSU, an FBS school out of the Sun Belt Conference that has produced wins this season over Arkansas (by Louisiana-Monroe) and Kentucky (Western Kentucky), pounded the listless Jackets with 510 yards of offense, forced four turnovers and neutralized Tech with force and energy. On this day, at least, little doubt existed over the identity of the superior team.

“I told (MTSU) Coach (Rick) Stockstill after the game (that) they got after us, whipped our butt, and give them some credit, because they played hard,” Johnson said. “After saying that, it was embarrassing. I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it.”

Plenty of conditions for an upset congregated Saturday at Bobby Dodd – a tough loss the previous week, a noon start, key players sidelined with injuries (outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu and cornerback Louis Young), a half-filled stadium and a confident opponent eager for payback and arriving with two weeks’ rest.

Tech did the rest in falling to 2-3.

On the road, with fewer resources and fielding a roster full of players deemed unworthy of a scholarship to Tech, the Blue Raiders (3-1) steamrolled the Jackets. It was the sort of result that Johnson produced regularly at Navy, leading to his hire at Tech following the 2007 season. Johnson said it was probably the worst loss of his career.

“We didn’t throw the ball much,” MTSU guard Josh Walker, who overpowered Tech defensive linemen all afternoon, told the Daily News Journal of Murfreesboro, Tenn. “We didn’t have to. We were so physical, and we ran the football right at them. We were more physical than them, faster than them and in better shape than them.”

The Jackets’ start offered little hint of the waterfall that they were heading towards. Inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days intercepted MTSU quarterback Logan Kilgore on the game’s first possession, a turnover that Tech turned into the first of quarterback Tevin Washington’s four rushing touchdowns. Washington’s four ground scores tied a school single-game record and perhaps set a new standard for least cherished record.

Tech’s fabric disintegrated quickly after that. The Blue Raiders countered with a 75-yard touchdown drive, the first of three such drives in the half. None of them measured less than 75 yards and included a 60-yard score by MTSU running back Benny Cunningham in which he shot through a gap in the line and scored untouched.

Tied at 21 at halftime, the Jackets found themselves in a shootout with a team they had defeated by a combined 56 points in the past two seasons and were favored to beat by almost 30 points.

“We went down and scored after the defense gave us the ball,” Washington said. “After that, there wasn’t much life on the sideline or out there on the field. We just came out too flat [Saturday]. When you give another team energy and momentum, it’s hard to stop them once they get going.”

The Tech defense was again flattened, done in by its opponents’ play-calling and offensive line and its own slippery tackling attempts. Prior to the game, Johnson said he thought that last week’s play against Miami – 609 yards, 30 first downs, missed tackles galore – was an aberration. Nothing much looked different Saturday, save the colors of the opponents’ jerseys and the chants from the visiting fans that drowned out the home crowd.

“That’s probably as bad a tackling game as I have seen,” Johnson said.

There was no tackling on the Blue Raiders’ two longest scores of the game. No Jacket laid a hand on Cunningham on his 60-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter or wide receiver Marcus Henry’s 75-yard scoring reception, also down the center of the field, in the third quarter.

MTSU’s ransacking ought to make McNeese State, Florida Atlantic and Memphis feel better. The Cowboys, Owls and Tigers all managed to keep the Blue Raiders under 500 yards in MTSU’s first three games. McNeese State, an FCS team, actually beat MTSU in the opener, 27-21.

The Jackets had a final opportunity in the fourth quarter trailing 35-28. After forcing a punt, Tech started a drive on its 17-yard line with 8:20 left in the game. Despite having been outplayed, a chance for a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback like the one that the Jackets had permitted last Saturday against Miami flickered in the afternoon light.

On a play-action pass on the first play from scrimmage, Washington heaved a pass downfield to wide receiver Jeff Greene around the MTSU 40-yard line. Greene couldn’t hang onto the slightly underthrown pass, which was intercepted by cornerback Kenneth Gilstrap and returned to the Tech 15-yard line. The Blue Raiders got into the end zone in four plays for a 42-28 advantage.

That was the end of the flickering.

Fire CPJ and move AG to head coach. Let him hire an O-coordinator that has a clue and allow him to build a defense has the ability to practice against what they will play.

To date, the best team Johnson has put on the field was recruited by Gailey and this game has shown that Johnson doesn’t have what it takes to cut it at this level. Tech will never get the level of talent that Texas, Alabama, USC, etc. get so you have to win with smarts and the system in place now won’t allow that. Time for a change. The rest of the season (and probably the next few seasons) are going to be rough.

ONE THING I SAW IN THE CLEMSON VS FL STATE GAME WERE PLAYERS WHO LOVED PLAYING FOR THERE COACH! (DABO AND JIMBO PUMPING UP THERE PLAYERS AFTER GOOD PLAYS.) I SEE THIS ALL OVER COLLEGE FOOTBALL, BUT NOT AT GA TECH. PLEASE GO AND LOOK AT ALL THE PLAYERS WHO HAVE LEFT THIS PROGRAM UNDER CPJ BEFORE THEIR PLAYING TIME WAS FINISHED! (SHAW, LUELLEN, COOPER, WATSON, HILL, THOMAS, DWYER, BURNET, AYERS, TARANT, ETC, ETC)!
THIS ALL FALLS ON CPJ, AND IT WILL NOT GET ANY BETTER WHILE WE RUN THIS STINKING H.S. SCHOOL OFFENSE. THE MTSU RB HAD OVER 200 YARDS TODAY WHILE NOT LINING UP IN THE STINKING T.O. OUR DEFENSE HAS TO PRACTICE AGAINST THIS CRAP ALL SPRING/SUMMER. THEY PREPARE FOR REAL OFFENSES ONLY FOR FOUR DAYS EACH WEEK BEFORE THE SATURDAY GAME. SO GO AHEAD AND HIRE ANOTHER D.C! Paul Johnson started at GT respectably by beating UGA. In 2009 Georgia Tech won the ACC and was in the Top 10 at the end of the year. Since then it has been totally inconsistent; a losing record in 2010 and last year GT started 6-0 and ended 8-5. This year GT looked good the first 3 games and have unraveled now. I would give Paul Johnson another year to make some adjustments.. he is fierce and has had success but some changes must happen ASAP!

As an alumni who has been loyal through some bad times, the last two weeks are the straws that broke the camel’s back. Tech football is a disgrace! After last weeks game everyone said we just did not have the players and that is just a very poor way to cover up for terrible coaching. Last week we had the players to come from 19 points behind to a 17 point lead so it is clearly not the players. Last week bad coaching on both the defense and especially the supposedly vaunted offense in the forth quarter cost us the game, not the players. I did not watch today because I was expecting more of the same although I must admit that I was stunned at how bad we actually played (and I use the term played very loosely) It is clearly time to clean house and find someone that knows how to both recruit and coach at least at the ACC level. If we are not going to do that, we should drop back to a lower division where we might actually have a winning record. Sooner or later the AD, will have to understand the stupidity of giving long term contracts to marginal or totally unproven coaches that prevent their timely firing when the demonstrate why they are marginal!

GT “Realist”, Tevin had four touchdowns. How many of those could have been touchdowns for the b-back? Heck, he carried the ball 19 times for four yards. Considering the number of times the O-line got a good push in the first half but Tevin kept the ball, we didn’t wear them down because he was making poor reads. He strikes me as selfish to be honest. However, CPJ is not without fault here either. Why does the quarterback always drop back the wrong way then either throw the ball off the wrong foot or take extra time to set his feet? He is rarely faking a handoff. He is just wasting time. CPJ is teaching them this, and it is a terrible habit. The lineman do not block well in passing situations, and the RT Kidney should not be playing college football, there is a reason he was a walkon. The defense was pushed around. No one played with any heart. When there is no heart, that points towards the leadership, both from the coaching staff and the senior players.

Anyone who follows Tech and its lack of success in recruiting should not be surprised. CPJ’s offense has a solid scheme but he can’t recruit on either side of the ball to be successful at the D1 level. Just look at what he did with Chan’s recruits. He was great. These boys are all his. It will take years for Tech to recover from this. He has loaded his staff with D2 coaches and they recruit the same way they always have.

First of all Groh should be fired this week end of story. Secondly with this offense we cannot recruit defensive talent. Who wants to go against this offense in practiice all week, especially if you have aspirations of playng professionally. These are all Johnson recruits and mostly Groh’s, no excuses at this point I am done. I will not renew season tickets what a waste of a Saturday afternoon. The players quit. I haven’t seen that many times in my 60 years of watching Georgia Tech. I’m a big supporter both financially with the Alexander-Tharpe Fund and as a season ticket holder. I will never quit on GT football, but this is painful. Our home field advantage seems to be gone, but there is one good thing. We won’t have to go to another lousy bowl game which we have been losing lately and which the payout barely covers the expense of going. The season is done. There is only one way to salvage anything out of it, and that’s in Athens.

This is a lesson in why you NEVER talk smack and start counting your chickens before they hatch. Three years ago Georgia Tech appared on the ascendency under Johnson, Georgia on the decline under Richt. Then…BOOM! – the debacle of November 28, 2009. Since then, Paul Johnson is 17-16, 0-2 versus Georgia, 0-3 against Virginia Tech, 2-1 against Clemson, and 0-3 in bowl games. Georgia, on the other hand, looks like a machine. That’s not the only problem. FSU rotates back on the schedule next year.

Just back from the game. Sat a few rows up behind the bench–thanks to a friend the best seats Ive ever had. It was obvious the team lacked fire nor care a flip for the coaches or their attempts to motivate. Chan’s lack of fire got him fired but at least he could tell recruits I can coach you up for NFL football where CPJ can barely make that claim. Al Groh could say that in theory due to his NFL past but he should not be allowed to even tell high schoolers he can coach them up for college football. Sad defensive coaching. Sad defensive play.

Defenseless

September 29th, 2012
4:36 pm

While the offense is not great it is scoring on average better than 39 points per game which should be good enough to win, however, the defense can’t slow much less stop anyone. PJ find someone who can coach and recruit on defense. It is apparent that AG cannot do this. Defensively we obiviously have no depth and the talent that is on the field is either not being coached or is not capable of playing at this level(a result of poor recruiting and judgement of talent). At one time when Tech did get beat, it was normally because we could not score. Now, we can score enough to win but we do not have a defense that can secure a win.

After following Tech Football for better than 40 years, the last two games reminds me of the defenses in the early 80’s where we plain and simple did not have the talent to compete. I’ll end this tirade with the old football saying that if the other team doesn’t score then at least you walk away with a tie and I like the odds of a team winning when it can keep the other team from scoring, period.

I’ll say it again, there are no money issues if the leadedship at Tech wants to get rid of CPJ. If anybody cares to detail it differently then feel free to do so. PH’s buyout has been taekn care of and they Insitute can afford to buy out CPJ if they feel the need to. My issue is not with CPJ for the most part but with Groh’s complete failure as a DC. We have been told as fans that it takes 3 years to install a 3-4 D, well it’s year 3 and they’re worse now than they were under Wommack. Get this team a top flight DC and let’s see where they can go. As far as the talent level, do yourself a favor and go back to check who are the teams that are recruiting Tech’s players. While is may not be AL, LSU or the like it sure isn’t the Elon, GA Southern or UT San Antonio either. There is good talent on the Flats and nmore coming in, it just needs better coaching, particularly on D.

Another complete failure by the defensive side of the ball. No tackling whatsoever, no pass coverage whatsoever. This defense was in a funk all day. On the offensive side of the ball, not much better. CPJ should have benched TW and let VL play the rest of the game. This is the QB of the future. But no, it foolish pride would not do that. The O line did not block worth a damn. This team has no heart. If CAG is the best we can get for a defensive coach, we are toast. This D is worst than last year. If Tech wins 6 games this year, it will be a miracle. Right now, we can’t beat anyone on the remainder of the schedule the way this team is playing.

George – I just got back from the game. Tech was confused on defense, players moving in the defensive backfield, motioning to one another even up to the snap. Tyler Macordes, replacing Attaochu, looked helpless as the MT offense targeted his side. On several occasions, from my vantage point fairly low in the stands, the linebackers simply disappeared. It looked like an 11 on 7 game.

BostonJacket

wow, this was an absolute disgrace.

Al Groh is not a good DC. When our defense wasn’t standing around clueless (how do you let a big slow tight end lumber down the middle of your D like that?), they appeared to be allergic to tackling. Don’t go for the hit, don’t drop your shoulder 3 yards out and rush blindly towards where you think the ballcarrier might be. Wrap your arms around the guy! Poor preparation, poor execution.
Tevin Washington is not a good QB. Can’t throw, can’t read the option. What’s he doing back there? And THANK YOU Outside Observer – someone else has finally brought up his terrible footwork. I’ve only been trying to say it for the past two years (though I remember Nesbitt would do it too so it’s not 100% TW’s fault).
CPJ is not a good fit for us. He did okay at first, but that was with players recruited by Gailey. Now that he has a full, experienced roster of his own players though, we were supposed to take a big leap forward. Instead, we get embarrassed at home to a Sun Belt school. We can’t win bowl games, we can’t beat VT or Clemson regularly and UGA hardly at all, and nearly every year we lose at least one game a year that we have no business losing (MTSU this year, Virginia last year, Miami pasted us at home in 2010, etc.). That to me is a failure of recruiting and motivation.

In my time starting back with Bud Carson, the only coaches with success were Ross and O’leary. If you remember also those were celebrated defenses. When a team averages 30 some odd points a game, a great defense then allows for much success. And correct, we don’t recruit with SEC type teams but don’t need to with this offense if we had a flying to the ball, hard attitude defense!!
I’m willing to give CPJ more time I he makes adjustments to coaching staff and continues to add more passing to offense.

Sadly, the Jackets program is a mirror to the Tulane/LSU rivalry of years past. Tulane last beat LSU in 1982 and lost almost year after that with the last loss in 2001. Tech is pathetic like Tulane was then and Georgia is good like LSU is now. It’s time to step back and take a look at a program that is never going to be big-time again and consider scaling back to playing second-tier teams again. These are thoughts from a Tech fan since 1953. People, we just can’t compete with the big boys (or apparently the little boys either) any more.

GT Football was fun from 1998 to 2001 when there were downfield passing threats and an innovative OC. The 98 Team went toe to toe with an FSU team when they were in their prime and had a coach (GOL) who would fight the hill to get players in.

Drad and the Hill have a choice, allow some partial qualifiers or give up major football.

And get a clue about marketing, I can market my business better that these guys who are supposed to be the experts. Should have known getting in bed with the former Atlanta Spirit group executive would be a failure.

Congrats to middle Tennessee good game plan and well coached. long time season ticket holder. Been awhile since I have seen team quit and so often a defense so confused and out of position. There were several times we were scored on because defense was confused. no leadership from players. Last week qb decided to go it on his own and this week senior back gets unsportsmanlike on first series of second half for arguing with the ref. This can’t be allowed by coach. He has lost the team. Johnson has big problems and with all the talk of how rough he is on players, I believe he may need to be rougher. Like bench tw and smith. The defense? There is no hope.

Fire Groh, name Andy McCallum interim DC for the season, Scour the country for the best young defensive mind and bring him in to bring this D to level it should be. 4-3, 3-4, 3-3-5, I don’t care what the scheme is as long as it is fly to the ball and knock you hat off style of D.

Bring back Giff Smith to be your closer in recruiting. We’ve lost too many highly ranked players over the last few years because Tech can’t close the deal. Players that are both academically capable and are 4-5 star recruits.

Look to George Godsey and bring him back into the fold as the next head coach. He has been learning under a master in New England, is a coach’s son and there are things CPJ can teach him as well. When it’s time for CPJ to retire then Godsey’s ready to step in and run the program. To GTpack on p.1: who would Tech be able to hire- nobody; each coach left Tech or did not want the job; Ross left Tech, Rogers left; Curry left, Fridgen did not want the job; they realize that Tech is not competitive in Div 1, and might need to move to Div 2(yeah, where MTSU is); Tech dropped all phys ed courses except one, required in the Junior year; I believe they need to drop that also, and have Tech become a bookworm school only, with phys ed courses available for no credit as audit courses are; Tech as you see today has become a weak athletic college; they just don’t emphasize athletics, but love to have the white students watch the black slaves on the “field” do all the sweating; when I was at Tech from ‘69 to ‘73, all students had to take 2 years of phys ed, white and black students, for a more well-rounded education; now Tech tries to educate students to watch black pro athletes and pay millionaire salaries to those blacks, in my opinion; Tech is really weak in athletics now as an entire school; look at how Cunningham bowled over Tech today; alot of that has to do with Dan Radikovich as AD; I see Tech in the future as dropping out of athletics and focusing on sitting on softy behinds to watch sports played by blacks preferably, as Southern plantation owners watched, then watch the Falcons, Hawks and Braves the same way; it’s just a new Tech now; they should drop out of Div 1 quickly, and join the conference that Harvard, and the Ivy League schools are in; believe me, though, Tech wasn’t always a panty waist school of weaklings

The only problem with your theory is that Belichick coaches who have left him as offensive minded guys haven’t had the greatest success…..no where near what his defensive coaches have had. Which is why I lean to Lance Thompson as HC. He’s 54, young enough, loves GT, is one of the best recruiters in the SE and one of the best Tech has ever had, and he’s learned from both Saban and Monte Kiffin for the last 10 years.

@Tech Forever, I understand your viewpoint, But remember Godsey first learned under Friedgen. I’m not suggesting Belichick is any type of offensive guru but more what a head coach should be in running a program. Goose is smart enough to take what he’s learned from Frieden, NFL OCs and what he could learn from CPJ to be a dynamite offensive mind as well as a Head Coach.

At 54 I feel Lance is a bit advanced age wise unless you’re going to look at him to replace CPJ. As I posted earlier I am not ready to say get rid of CPJ I just looking to make the future brighter for the Jackets.

By bringing in Goose, you have your probable next head coach at an age where he has the initial training and experience yet till of an age where he can relate to the student athlete much better. If Tech coould then add a Giff Smith or his type in recruiting then the program is set up for future and ongoing sucess.

Well, Georgia Tech just suffered an embarrassing defeat on the tail-end of two heartbreaking losses. Three things to consider…

1) The team and its fans can just quit and give-up on the rest of the season. Or they can regroup and try to make something of the season. There’s a reason they play the games. Clemson offers a great opportunity next week. You KNOW they’re going to choke (being Clemson) sometime this season and Johnson has had a great track record against them (not so much against Tech’s other big rivals, unfortunately).

2) Most humiliating debacles offer a chance to gain some introspection and motivation. Maybe this month’s mess will light a fire under Johnson and the whole team rather than crushing them.

3) At this point there seems no reason not to play Vad Lee. The guy is obviously one of the most talented players on the team. Put him in there. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Why would you want to hire anyone to come and work under CPJ. His superiority complex would not allow him to tutor anyone. I am afraid most good defenses have figured out his offense and how to stop it and he certainly will not change or add something new. He could care less about defense. His defense is to have his offense keep the ball. IT AIN’T WORKING CPJ.

This is the worst defense GT has ever had. We were told they would be much better this year. Al Groh said this will be the year it will come together. PJ needs to re-evaluate his decision to keep Groh and this “can’t tackle defense”. We still have a lot of football left this year and this is hard to take. I was sure they would replace Groh after last year. PJ needs to answer for this.

After sitting in the stands and watching Miami come back on GT, I wasn’t even really upset watching the numbers crawl up on GT today. I think Al Groh tries to make his defense so complex that offenses will be constantly confused by it. Unfortunately, his layers of complexity only confuse his players. You can do that in the NFL when you have players staying around for years. You can’t afford to have a complicated defense in college when you only have a few years to spend with the players.

There are upsets and there are embarrassments. Today was no upset. The better team won and would win again if we played them next week. Truth is GT is a very average team and I’m being kind. Rad should start to take notice quickly. Johnson is the Hewitt of football. The man simply can’t coach. Has underperformed in most of the games that have really mattered. Al Groh needs to be dismissed immediately. I don’t want to hear about the players we didn’t have today. Shouldn’t matter.

In addition to all the above, our QB is simply not a winner. GT is not going to a significant bowl if any. May as well play Lee now. The season is done. You know you suck when Duke looks better than you. That’s bad. Bottom line is GT is simply not getting the athletes and nobody wants to come in and play in Johnson’s system with GT’s curriculum requirements. It is what it is and it ain’t pretty. GT is like the majority of the ACC. Irrelevant. Sad to see for a proud school. Realize today that UVA lost to LA Tech, Cincy beat VT, Mid Tenn beat GT. Black eye for the ACC.

I totally agree. Paul Johnson can’t coach at this level. Statesboro was his highest and best fit. What is it going to take for the AD to recognize thru all the embarrassment that a change has to be made and don’t wait until the end of the year. The year is shot. Change now, before refunds are requested due to false advertising. This is not major college football.

I suggest that if the AD can’t pull the trigger then the President needs to start the ax falling with him.

Tech was already in trouble when we lost to LSU in chick-fil-a bowl. all downhill from there. false promises. we need somebody who will build this program like a SEC one. no more NFL washouts whose selling point is getting players ready for the next level. no more gimmick ppl whose too stubborn to admit his way is wrong and tries to patch it up with another gimmick called pistol. We need somebody who can say we’ll go beat UGA, VT, Clem, FSU on a yearly bases and compete for championships.

There is no worry about Johnson losing his 5th bowl game, not this year. It’s time that somebody recognized that this coaching staff has lost this team. How can DRad expect people to cough up hard earned money to watch this? Fan apathy finally got rid of Hewett. How long does rad continue to watch this when the ending is so predictable? And we were all so enthused 5 years ago….Sad

You guys are stuck with him. GT doesn’t have the money to send him packing and even if they did can any of you name a qualified coach that would take the job. It won’t be easy since the rooster is made up of some not so good players (Div II of even III types). So many here tried to tell you guys the ship was listing but you just drank the Kool-Aid and blasted us.

LSU is currentrly struggling with (of all people) Towson.

So Tenn and Miss State may be the toughest teams on their schedule….

I actually encouraged you guys to show some patience here; but have to admit that MTSU has changed my mind.

I will say that MTSU looked pretty darn good today. And you were running into one of those teams with a ton of Georgia kids on it. That’s never fun. They come back really motivated and ready to play.

Will tell you this. I’m a big Phoenix Cardinal fan these days. In my mind, the perfect fit for Tech’s program is Whisenhunt. His resume is stellar. He’s a Tech man. Grew up in the state and clearly can talk to any kid in the Southeast with credibility of saying “I can help get you to the next level”. So, as you can imagine, I’m perfectly happy with Phoenix making the playoffs year in and year out.

As far as the game goes; the only observation that I have is, why start throwing now? Stick to the ground game and wear them down. I know it wasn’t working as well as in the past, but it was if the patience that has been there in past seasons, seems to have gone out the window this year.

One last thought. $12MM or not, if your not putting people in the stands, then your largest money maker is killing your bottom-line. Now since Tech isn’t affected by Title Nine IX, like most schools, you still need this program to generate profit, and you need for your larger contributors to stay on board. Contracts can be negotiated down. CPJ isn’t the type to sit on the side line; wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t move his office right down the street to Georgia State.

I think Tech will play much better next week. Clemson overmatches most teams, so I do think they will win. But with this said, I think the Jackets will make a game of it.

Here’s to both teams leaving the state of South Carolina with a win next Saturday. But they both better play better than they did today, or it’ll be a long drive home.

It is obvious to everyone else. The receiver was wide open on the underthrown last interception. The defense plain out sucks.CAG needs to resign tomorrow. There were no adjustments to the formations that MTSU ran. The safeties were playing so far off the line with the fomation with 2 sets fof twin wideouts that we were ot numbered awhen they ran the ball with only 3 down linemanand 2 linbackers in the box. This went on all day. You have to bring the safeties up to stop the run.

@DOC 51 – O’Leary blew several 4th quarter leads during his tenure? He may have lost some games that were back-and-forth during the last quarter but I don’t remember him blowing many good leads. He blew the Georgia game in 1997 after a really late lead (48 seconds, I think), another lead against Maryland in 2001, and an early 17-0 lead against Virginia in 1999, but I also remember him winning some other games late (Clemson in 1997, 1998, and 2000, Virginia and Georgia in 1998, etc.).

@Cloudman, Oregon runs out of a pistol formation better than 90% of the time, the first read out of the pistol is the dive. The 2nd read is the OB keeper and the 3rd is the option. Sound familiar? Tech has run 4 wide, shotgun, pistol formations as well. There is NO TO formation, elements of the TO can be run out of any offensive set.

For real old-timey, back to my days, Tech ran the triple option from the straight-T formation as their base set. They also incorporated wings and flankers. Auburn ran it, too, and they continued to run it when they switched to the I-formation. Their QB became the first QB to rush for a thousand yards. Billy Lothridge finished runner up, or third, can’t recall exactly, in the Heisman. I played in the T-formation in high school over a 4 year period, and one year we ran the triple option, the same “belly series” that Tech ran at the same time.

Everybody take a deep breath – Do we really want to have a huge national debate about what is going on at Georgia Tech? These are the issues as I see them: DEFENSE – poor tackling, no pass rush, no intesity on defense.
Tevin is a great kid and I love him dearly – however, he is making poor reads on the option and he cannot throw the ball effectively. It is obvious. We need to run a 4 – 3 defense, we cannot run the 3 -4 effectively, nor can we recruit for that defensive scheme. We need to put Vad Lee in at quarterback and open up the offense – pistol, shotgun, you name it. I still love the JACKETS as I know the rest of you guys do. GO JACKETS – THWG

Those last two paragraphs sound like excuses. Bottom line – there is no excuse for losing by 21 to a team that was only playing for a paycheck. GT dominated these guys two straight years, and should have added to that total. This was an epic failure. I’m not a Tech hater even though I went to UGA, but this is an embarrassment for the whole state. Al Groh should be terminated tomorrow, and if Paul Johnson objects he should follow him out the front door. The wheels are threatening to come off, a la Arkansas.

And where were the “fans”? That’s enough to deflate any team. I thought Tech had gotten this problem behind them. Fair-weather fans are apparently an annual issue for the football team. That makes recruiting elite players.

In short, GT has a myriad of problems, and there is no quick fix for any of them.

Makdwag you might want to do a bit of homework before spouting off and confirming how unedcated you are about about what consitutes a “formation”. Once again for the football challenged, the triple option is a series of 3 plays consisting of (1) the give to the fullback ( or B back) on the dive play (2) the QB keeper and (3) the pitch to the wingback (or A back). This is the basic triple option, there is NO “triple option” formation. Sheesh how freaking hard is that to understand.

I am not ready to fire Paul Johnson yet, but WOW, just WOW. This game made it apparent that immediate tough decisions MUST be made or the Johnson era will be over. I don’t really have a problem with the offense as much as a lot of you, but the 3-4 MUST GO. Name a college team that runs the 3-4 with dominating results. You can’t because it DOESN’T WORK. It requires NFL quality athletes. We have about 3 of those on the whole roster. Here is what must be done NOW.

1) End the Washington era and make Vad Lee the immediate starter. Fair or not, we are in a rebuilding mode. There is ZERO point in keeping Washington as the starter, now that the best bowl game we can get is the 2000 flushes bowl.

2) Fire Groh. Seriously, enough is enough. He is nearly 70. Find a young energetic coordinator and send grandpa fishing.

3) Cut out the cancer. There is no way a team lacks mental toughness to this degree and doesn’t have attitude problems and quitters. SOMEONE is at fault. At best, this means there is little leadership in the locker room.

4) Either hire a recruiting coordinator or bother to make an effort. These 2 and 3 star guys aren’t cutting it. I don’t expect to have a Bama recruiting class at Tech, but Gailey still got 8-10 guys a year who were 4 and 5 star prospects. A lot of them are in the NFL right now. If PJ doesn’t learn to recruit, it will eventually be the death of him at Tech.

No need to debate the merits of the TO or alternatives, which us better, etc., when PJ has proven he is inflexible and sticks with his offense no matter what. Some more uninspired play and giving up big yards and points to future opponents will eventually lead to change. Unfortunately, it may take several more embarrassing losses and reductions in contributions to the AT Fund to finally stir the school Administration to make coaching changes.

Techie, now that you mention it, I guess you are right. We had Burnett, Morgan, Thomas, Gardner, and about 5 other guys all in that one class. Either way, that year proved that we CAN recruit enough talent to be a solid 1-deep all over the field if we actually make the effort. We offer lesser players way too early. You can get by with 2 and 3 star guys that work on O-line (since that’s equal part smarts and guts), but it just doesn’t work that way with skill positions. Look at our secondary and our A-backs. Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies

The Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies program delivers foreign language study in contexts including social and technical communication, cultural perspectives, industry, technology, arts and literature, as well as media and science, providing graduates with the competitive edge in language requirements of government agencies, multinational industries, and social organizations. The program is currently offered for study of Japanese and Spanish.

Graduates of the Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies program will be able to apply intercultural communication skills within their career path on a lifetime basis; will have a broad understanding of current affairs, political viewpoints, economics, science and technology, and the cultures of the country or region; and will demonstrate global skills by:

* exhibiting a positive attitude toward cultural identity differences
* demonstrating the ability to live abroad and to speak, understand, and think in a foreign language
* clearly articulating global aspects of emerging cultural issues and international challenges, e.g., climate and environment, immigration and integration, business and intercultural communication, social impacts of technology, connections between literature and society, etc.
* understanding how media represents different perspectives within and between cultures and societies

I am sick of hearing Gailey only had one good recruiting year and PJs have been better…please. This guy can’t recruit a lick…evident by the players on the field. If this TO was so great, more schools would be running it. Find the right coach who can recruit his fair share of players and coach up the rest…he’s out there, just have to go find him. This is guy is not it…and he will continue to run the program in the ground.

Which do you think will hurt more? Tech knowing early on that this team isn’t going anywhere and phoning in the 2012 season……OR…….UGA suffering the inevitable season-ruining loss that keeps them out of a national championship for the 32nd consecutive season, which is 10 years longer than the last time GT went to one. Who will it be this year? Hmmmm….I’m going out on a limb and saying Florida will regain their dominance against you…..BUT even IF UGA makes it to the SEC championship, Bama will do far worse to you than UGA will do to us.

My plan is working to perfection. We did great in hiring a high school coach with a high school offense. We have done even better by recruiting 3rd class recruits. And to top it off we schedule awful teams to come and play us. I love it when we beat the no name teams. Oh….crap…this isn’t working. I’m scared to fire Paul Johnson because he’s so intimidating. He said he’d smack me in the face. He said today was the players faults. He said he had the perfect game plan (you know…the one that’s in his head and not on a board or on paper) but the kids didn’t “execute”. He said Tech fans better keep coming to games or he’d smack them all in the face. We have the great guy…so proud of him.

UGA trolls, any trolls…if you are still here to blast us…thank you. We need something to make us feel relevant. Our football team doesn’t obviously. I’m an alumni and cant remember feeling this humiliated in some time, even counting the last loss to Duke. What the hell. I’m not going to pretend my comments on AJC are going to lead to a coaching change,,,but seriously. Haven’t we put up with the gimmick offense and a lack of defense long enough? Most of the goals for the season were over last week, but I thought we’d see more heart out of our team for the next few games. Today showed lack of motivation. And bottom line is…players aren’t blameless…but not the ones to shoulder all of the blame. Fire all coaches. Start from scratch. Yes…we will lose to everyone else this year probably. But after today…who really thinks we won’t anyway.

Never believed in PJ and he has proven once again that the AD at Tech should be fired for awarding long term contracts on short term results. PJ may be a good man off the football field, but I have no use for his antics on the sideline. HE IS TECH’S NUMBER ONE PROBLEM. If the players are no good, then the person recruiting them is to blame.

Paul Johnson is a great coach, he has beat some pretty good teams while at Tech. Players were looking ahead to the matchup with Klempsun.
Once Al gets a few more recruits on defense that can play the 3-4 D things will get better.
UGA didn’t have success with the 3-4 in the 1st 2 seasons. Neither did Saben at Bama.
It takes a couple seasons to get the players you need.
3-4 D is a hard defense to understand, thats why not many teams at the college level run it.
Out of 120 teams at the college level maybe 10 teams use it.
Things will get better. Best regroup and get after Klempsun.
Makes you feel any better Va Tech got beat today also.

As a graduate of the University of Georgia let me offer some sound advice to the Tech nation. I think by all means that you should keep Coach Paul Johnson and Coach Groh. They are both exemplary human beings and always have a good and solid game plan. They make sound adjustments that most ordinary fans don’t see or understand. If I were the Georgia Tech Athletic Director I would lock them both into long term contracts before another school snatches them away while you’re not looking. Again, as a UGA graduate, let me urge the Tech fans to get behind both coaches and cheer them on to victory – long term contracts would seem to be the right thing to do – thank you!

And while Stanford is an outstanding educational institution it alos offers a complete liberal arts program for student athletes to choose from.
_______________

Lou Young that is a starter for us, was DENIED admission to Stanford (or was wait listed) and GT admitted him rather quickly with no problem.

Please stop playing the Academics Card and mentioning Stanford in the same sentence!

Just because a school offers majors that are BA Degrees that doesn’t mean that the Academics are easy.

For example, at a place like Stanford, even if you major in a BA program the rest of the Students that get accepted to Stanford have earned 1,400 to 1,500 on the their 2-part SATs and being in classes competing against those types of Students can be just as hard as going through a BS curriculum, since the Professors at a place like Stanford will teach the course to the level of the best students in the class.

Also our FB players at GT can satisfy their science requirements by taking EARTH SCIENCE instead of Biology or Chemistry.

The Math requirements can be satisfied by taking SURVEY of Calculus & Finite Math which are NOT accepted for Credit by the Engineering Majors at GT.

In summary please stop playing the Academics Card, GT has no excuse for not Recruiting better FB players.

Keith Marshall of UGA was a full qualifier for GT, and Todd Gurley, also of UGA, was a borderline qualifier for GT, they would never consider leaving NC to play for GT because they wanted to play in a Pro-Style Offense or something close to it.

Our crappy Recruiting is due to CPJ being a poor Recruiter and not because of GT’s Academics, GT could be a top-10 Team with the Academic qualifiers lost to ND, Stanford, UGA , Bama, USCe, and other schools, and these are guys that played their HS FB within a 45-minute drive to BDS@ HGF.

In the Metro Atlanta Area there are plenty of High-3* & UP level Recruits that academically qualify for GT that wants nothing to do with the way that CPJ runs his program.

A word or two for my devastated GT friends – be careful what you wish for. Screaming for the firing of CPJ may allow you to vent your frustration but think about it.

It is pretty obvious Tech is a little short on talent and CPJ has stocked his roster with guys that fit his system (at least on the offense). That being said if CPJ is sent packing a new coach will be saddled with a team that is short on talent and woefully undermanned to play under a different system. The elite ACC teams are stockpiling far better talent while GT is stockpiling what.

Looking around the college football landscape it is easy to see what happens to programs when change is forced. Tenn is a good example. When Kiffen left and Dooley took over the Vols faced an uphill battle. But there was one very big difference. Tenn had some pretty good players on the roster and Dooley still struggled. Can you imagine the train wreck that GT will become if CPJ leaves and GT is stuck with very little talent?

I know it’s not pretty now but I’d give it a little time and support the current kids and coaching staff before jumping off the bridge. It could get worse and will get worse if a coaching change does occur. Tech has limited recruiting resources and the transition to a new system could result in less than 10 wins over the next three or four years.

For what it’s worth I think Tech is better than what they showed against MTSU. Yesterday was the perfect storm an overconfident GT and a fired up MTSU. I’d give it some time and see what happens against Clemson. .I would also lean on the entire athletic department regarding the recruiting. GT is able to get some pretty decent basketball players so WTF is keeping the football team from doing the same.

Bottom line IMHO CPJ is a better coach than recruiter. It’s pretty obvious his system can work and work well if the talent level is better, he did well with the talent he inherited but the drop off has been steady as those players departed.

Old Blind Dawg -

You’re one of the few UGA fans that posts on the Tech blogs that I’ll even bother to read. Most of them are like Nix there, can’t figure out if he’s already posted his semi-retarded comment or not.

Anyway, you make some good points, but I don’t think Tech was over confident yesterday. I think they were scared out of their minds, knowing there was a really good chance they were going to get blown out by MTSU at home under CPJ’s “leadership”.

So, let’s get down to nut cuttin here. I think Tech has three options. Two of them are not going to happen and our fan base isn’t going to like the third.

1. Become a basketball only school, like Georgetown. We can’t compete in football anymore, admit it and stop throwing good money after bad. Put full resources and committment into the basketball program.

2. Sell the entire campus to the city of Atlanta and construct an entirely new campus in North Georgia or Middle Georgia. Include a full liberal arts curriculum at the new facility so we can recruit the type of “student athletes” needed to compete at D1 football today. Let them sell the land to the Falcons. They can build their new open air stadium there. The city can’t protect the students, Atlanta’s a hell hole run by corrupt circus clowns. You take your life in your hands going down there. And they wonder why attendance is dropping at the Braves games?

3. Accept the fact that GT is going to be non-competitive in football. Keep making half hearted attempts but expect nothing. Examples would be Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky. Anyone see a pattern with those three schools? Think basketball.

It sucks, but there it is in a nutshell.

Yes, you can fire CPJ and Big Al. Will that really matter. You need to take a hard look at our players, In all my years watching Tech Football (50 yrs plus) I have never seen players look like they just gave up. We could have Nick Saban as the coach and we would still have gotten our rear ends beat. There was so many missed tackles that I couldn’t even count that high and I went to Tech. Yes the coaching staff isn’t doing their job either but it starts with the players, it is all about ATTITUDE, if you don’t have the right attitude you will not proceed in life. I hope these players take life a little more seriously than they have been doing, if not they will not suceed in life.

This loss should be no surprise to anyone. After two heartbreaking losses that should have beem w’s, there is no team in the country that could have gotten up for a game they were supposed to win by 4 td’s. When MTSU came out and slapped the, silly, the team did not respond but rather laid down. The team quit no doubt about it. But why should the team care, in the virginia game, the stands starting clearing out in the 3rd quarter. The tech fans, if they had any love for the team would have stayed and watched the subs who had worked their asses off since summer-but instead took a hike. What an insult. And then for such a lousy turnout for this game was sickening. I say fire the fans-you suck. I went to the Orange Bowl game a couple of years ago and Tech fans were outnumbered 3 to 1 by the hawkeye fans-most of whom had driven 3 times farther than the Tech fans. So shut your pie holes about johnson and Groh. They know more about football than the cumulative lot of you arm chair qb’s. tech could not hire a better coach than Johnson. And alsdo shut your pie holes up about the offense. Since Johnson’s hire we have led the nation in rushing by a mile.

Old Blind Dawg

Big Ol Stinger I feel for you guys (except in Nov.) and sadly don’t see things getting much better. The TO is not the answer in today’s football world. CPJ had some early success (the old blind hog acorn thing) but of late teams know how to beat his system. The pass HAS GOT TO BECOME integrated into the CPJ T.O.

I remember not long ago the GT fan base was constantly throwing up the rushing stats and proclaiming that nobody could stop the TO. Well take a look at the rushing totals from a few games yesterday and you will see balanced attacks yield more yardage on a consistent basis.

Even though my Dawgs spent most of the last three quarters on the ropes they did manage a ton of rushing yards out of a pro-set offense (granted they may have the best 1 – 2 runners in the country) against a team that is far better than MTSU. UT was able to move the ball on UGA because they have a legitimate passing attack (and UGA gave them some short fields to work with) which allowed them to run as well.

Your only hope may be Lee but I’m not sure CPJ can make the transition to a balanced attack. His passing attack success in the past was based on throwing the ball down the field and let future NFL receivers make spectacular catches. Without those guys snatching balls out of the air you have no legitimate passing attack.

I really don’t think your defense is as bad as it looks. The offense has not helped much in your last couple of games. The defense gets demoralized when the opponent gets up buy a more than 14 and knows the offense is one dimensional and likely not going to control the game.

I have seen bad coaching since Bud Carson but this is a new low point. Tech has won national championships and could be a good team again if we had a coach with some vision to start recruiting quality players. Running a high school offense is not a path to regain the old greatness. Perhaps teaching the defense how to tackle might be an interim step. Get rid of Paul Johnson NOW and start the rebuilding process. IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE.

This pretty much says it all:

“We didn’t throw the ball much,” MTSU guard Josh Walker, who overpowered Tech defensive linemen all afternoon, told the Daily News Journal of Murfreesboro, Tenn. “We didn’t have to. We were so physical, and we ran the football right at them. We were more physical than them, faster than them and in better shape than them.”

Looking at the remaining schedule Tech maybe lucky to win two more games. One of the biggest mistakes made by PJ was to hire AG as the defnsive coordinator. He should have gone out and hired someone with a cuurent strong program. AG had run UVA program into the ground.

From Yahoo Sports Week 5 Winners and losers article, naturally, GT was in the ‘losers’ grouping . . .

Georgia Tech: If you thought Georgia Tech snatching defeat from the hands of victory against Miami last week was the low point, well, look away. The Yellow Jackets’ 49-28 loss to Middle Tennessee State (yes, Middle Tennessee State) was the first loss to a non-BCS school since 1996 and the first time the Yellow Jackets had suffered consecutive home losses since 1988. Is it time to hit the panic button at Georgia Tech? Yes, yes it is.

CPJ’s play calling strategy and QB selection is more questionable than his offense structure. We open up to pass only when our backs are against the wall and then we are visibly “learning” how to do it. We have a QB who is consistently inconsistent with two guys on the bench who are more athletic, look like they have better arms, and hopefully have better game brains. We need to see that CPJ is willing to try something different. I don’t even want to talk about the D.

Start at he top, Radakovich (burnt us by informing pj against ncaa instruction) cost an ACC title and a few scholarships? Has he ever even apologized or taken responsibility? I don’t remember and read ajc every day.

The football coach selection is speaking for itself. He may be an sec plant. If so they are getting their moneys worth!

Replace him with Bobby Cremins. Let him start the coaching search now as he is well respected.

Is there going to be no accountability regarding the a d’s actions? If this happened in the private sector the would have been held accountable and let go then, when the ncaa violations occurred.

We can build projects without him, its an engineering school.

UGA has its own problems (i.e. how many points we allowed UT to score on us). I hope GT gets straighten out and turns into a force in the ACC. Our rivalry is much better when both teams come in to it as powerful football team instead of one or both being down. What other program would put up with an A D who violates NCAA rules costing us ACC championship and a few scholarships?

He must think we are complete buffoons, his arrogance an pj’s arrogance, no wonder they like each other.

Empirically it looks as if GT has a bunch of 2nd team single A all-staters-very little (if any) D1 talent in the offensive backfield, secondary and linebackers. Number 35 and 30 would be on alabama’s scout team, MABYE the water boys…(but hey, they are getting a GREAT education!

it’s not my board but.. You guys really stink. As much as I hate to admit it, so do my UM canes and so does the ACC. It’s discouraging to see once great programs li Ga tech fall so badly When I was a kid tech was the epitome of college football as was its coach Bobby Dodd- I remember his son Jr playing QB for the gators. That being said, look at the record of ACC teams- Have ony of them beaten a quality opponent this year? Va tech struggled against you, and lost 2 games to Big Least teams.- look at yesterday NCS and my canes, neither of whom have beten a ranked, or for that matter a decent team- stumbled over each other defensively as did Duke and Wake- Va tech lost to Cinn, VA to Louisiana tech ( Louisiana Tech? when did they become a power, ) AND YOU GUYS,- you know what happened. SAd state of affairs. I think the Canes might be a bit ahead of you in attempting to rebuild. We fired our old coach and hired Golden_ I have no idea how good he is- they stink defensively. I see some comments about recruiting. you should be doing better with what you got. Howard Schnellenberger won U first championship with a bunch that UF, the Big 10 and FSU didn’t want- He got 120% out of them. All you need is a new coach that uses 21st century offense formations – not the wishbone-triple option then wen’t out with Oklahoma 30 yrs ago.

I usually don’t post on this blog, but, I have to say this – after a disappointing loss like what you experienced today all of the naysayers will pop out of the woodwork and start crying, “The sky is falling”……I will say the same thing I have said on the Dawg blog after some distressing losses the past few years – the coaches have not suddenly forgotten how to coach and the players are not as untalented as they seemed…..I think your team has gone through a perfect storm of tough games and brutal losses culminating in a total failure yesterday – I think your team will regroup and make a run. It’s easy to outcoach the coaches after the fact and suddenly have a fan base that knows more than the guys getting paid millions to run the program – remember, and this year proves the point more than ever, there are NO untalented teams in NCAA football anymore – there is too much talent out there for all of them to get into the big programs and so all of the smaller and tradidtionally weaker teams have been stocking up on some decent talent. We can all forget thinking that if the school is not Alabama or LSU they must be patsies. Those days are over now. Take a step back, take a deep breath and go write some computer programs – your team will be OK – it’s just a game after all, no matter what we may think to the contrary. And if there are any Dawg fans on this blog talking smack – get your butts back to our blog. See ya’ Techies…..hope you win the rest except for one in November. The question is and has always been; can a triple option team, with the type of players that Johnson recruits, compete at the highest level. I believe, that that question has been answered, with 3 out 4 losses to GA, 4 straight against Miami, and the last two years against VT.What happened yesterday, was no aberration. Therefore, we are just wasting time with this guy and his high school offensive system. I for one, a consistent season ticket holder, am absoultely will not renew. That defense requires personnel GT just isn’t going to recruit.
_______________

Navy had the #100-something ranked Recruits playing vs. the #100-something ranked Schedule.

When you’re playing CFB at that LOW of a level then anything that happens is a crapshoot.

There is no transitive property as it relates to CFB, what happens on a LOWER LEVEL, does NOT necessarily transfer to a higher level.

This is what I said back in 2007 when CPJ was hired when I was a “lone voice of reason”.

Of course I was hammered and banned from various GT themed Message boards, but I stuck with my CFB intellect, and have been proven correct.

When GT had ” 20 wins in 2 years”, my detractors laughed at me as I was banned from yet another GT themed Message Board, but my talking points back then was “the storm is coming because CPJ is not replacing the Talent he inherited from Chan”………….they (my Detractors) still did NOT listen.

Over the next 2 yrs. my detractors started to notice that I wasn’t as crazy as they thought and CPJ wasn’t as smart as they thought either.

We had one losing season and then went 8-5 the next season losing in a crappy Bowl to Utah in OT.

That brings us to this season where I told anyone & everyone that the Talent drain had reached “critical mass” and could not be overcome, we had DLs that couldn’t beat out the crappy DLs from last yr. and that our D was in trouble, we had no B-backs, we had no WRs, our OL could not pass block, once again I was attacked by the masses of CPJ “BLTs”.

It is sad for me to say that I saw this happening all along from the day we hired CPJ in Dec. 2007

It’s even more disturbing that more GT fans didn’t see the same things that I saw back in Dec. 2007.

It is with great sadness that I say that I AM WnE, and the line forms right here for all those that want to bow down to the CFB intellect that I posses and apologize for not having faith in the ” CFB gospel according to Wrecks”!

@ Delbert……I don’t know that it WILL happen, and I am not even totally convinced that it SHOULD happen, but for the first time in his five years at Tech, I think it is now safe to say that it COULD happen. Something has got to change, whether Johnson personally wants to or even personally believes that it needs to. Obviously Groh, and probably the entire defensive staff needs to go. As far as hiring an offensive coordinator, I don’t know, but I DO think he should hire a QB’s coach to spend virtually all his time working with the QB’s. Friedgen comes to mind there, IF he would accept it. The Fridge should never now at this point in his life be a head coach again, not to mention that he failed miserably at Maryland. But he certainly can still teach a QB how to run an offense and pass; he proved that even at Maryland in spite of his failure there as a head coach. Johnson, on top of several other things he probably needs to do, needs to win back the fans, and hiring the Fridge would definitely help there. Did you notice the ad for the basketball team on the big screen yesterday? Gregory and Cremins standing side by side touting the Yellow Jacket basketball team. That was AWESOME, and the fans loved it. Hiring Friedgen in some capacity like that and treating him if not as an equal, certainly as a true icon of Tech athletics, would do a helluva lot of good.

Super – My reason is that this “my offense and your defense” nonsense has to stop. Johnson is a driven and arrogant man, and this team is suffering for it. He has to be a head coach and right the ship and bury his egotism. Focus on the team. If he can’t make that work over a 2 year period, replace him as head coach.

To those who say give Johnson one more year, your fooling yourself. Why prolong the inevitable. What do you expect to change next year? The defense, even with a new DC is not going to get better in one year. The offense will be the same old fullback up the middle on every first down. Its useless to keep this insantity going. The template is the type of offense and defense that O’leary. If George Godsey is too young, what about Jimmy Robinson. Does anyone know how many years are left on Johnson’s contract?

I don’t agree with the Friedgen possibility. I think he is too old for one thing (a year younger than me), and I think it would create more problems than it would solve. I’m saying it would create conflict between him and Johnson, and the unity of the team would further deteriorate. Friedgen is a great person and one of the best offensive minds in the country, but that doesn’t help unless Johnson turns the offense over to him completely. That would be at odds with keeping the offense, yet improving it with diversity. I don’t think that Friedgen is the guy that could do that, but it is possible that he could. My bottom line is that Johnson has to stop micromanaging the offense and focus on the team. They sorely need help with focus.

A defense CAN change in one year. Take for example when Dodd hired Bud Carson to coach the defense in his last year as head coach. In that one year Carson totally transformed the mediocre defense Tech had had the year before into one of the best around.

Yes, that was my post at 2:47. I don’t think that a new QB coach is the answer, even one with Friedgen’s qualifications. I’m trying to address this from a management perspective, and that involves a more serious reassignment of responsibilities. Johnson has to be the head coach, and only the head coach. It’s working for Chip Kelly, another guy who is driven and proud, but it is no longer working for Johnson in this environment.

PJ has over 10 million reasons to not resign but instead it will require action by the GTAA and university to make the change – if they choose to do so. It will cost a lot of money to terminate the agreement.

There’s not a list of long-term replacements who would come in mid-season to untangle this. No major changes until either very late in the season or after the season is over. Fans have no choice but to endure the rest of the season. IT WILL PROBABLY GET EVEN WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER.

Hopefully he stays on course and continues to uninspire and lose, then it will make the replacement decision easier.

I went back and checked the coaching records, and let’s face it, since coach Dodd left, (I was 3 when he left), our head coaches are basically about the same, 60% winning percentage. Take out the 1990 season, Coach Ross was under .500 at 20-26, he won the NC and left 1 year later and we got stuck with Bill Lewis, George O’leary in 7 seasons averaged just over 7 wins a season, Chan Gailey ( ” I guess I did not have them ready to play, 51-7″) about 7 wins a season. Under Johnson, same thing, maybe unfortunately Brain was right, but I think we can compete every couple of years. Not sure new assistant coaches will help, but I think it is time for Vad Lee or Syngyn Days at QB. TW is a nice guy, a college graduate, but can’t win the big game. New coaches every 5-7 years is not going to get it done, if you have the money to cover the payouts, put it up or shut up and support the team.

I’m right and have been right for a very long time, yet you continue to attack ME instead of addressing the important issue concerning GT FB.

Amazing!

You really are a CPJ boot-licking-toady.

CPJ’s problem is that he’s a “small potatoes” FB coach, he has no connections to HS coaches to Recruit better, he has very few connections to up & coming BCS asst. coaches to improve GT’s staff.

He basically got lucky that ND went through a down stretch, beat them and parlayed that into a cushy gig at GT, and then he proceeded to hire a bunch of Service Academy Assts. that can’t recruit worth a crap and can’t develop players to compete vs. BCS competition.

Read the names of CPJ Assts. currently at GT and name one that projects to be a HC in a BCS conference?

You can’t because CPJ is glorified OC that is not HC material.

He can’t MANAGE a BCS-level program, the Recruiting, hiring Assts. that can’t develop talent that are also ace Recruiters themselves.

GT just doesn’t have those things and it all starts with Coach Kung Fu Panda, he has not only Recruited players poorly but he has also recruited his Assts. poorly.

The GT FB Program is in SHAMBLES, but the weakness of the ACC and the LACK OF A “HIGH CFB IQ” by the fanbase are the only things that are masking it to many GT Fans, not me of course.

There was an assistant coach for O’Leary that went to work for Mack Brown as OL assistant coach @ UTx. He was voted the number 1 assistant coach in the nation in 2008 by the American Football Coaches Association (or some similarly named organization). He was the interim GT head coach in the Seattle Bowl in 2001 against Stanford. After the O;Leary debacle with Notre Dame had played itself out. Mac McWhorter held that team together & won that bowl game 24-14. He made it known that he wanted the job permanently and lobbied hard for it. FWIW, I wanted him to have a chance. Even though Mac played @ Georgie. I figured he had earned a chance after pulling that team together & winning the Bowl. You know the team had to feel like O’Leary deserted them. But, the GIT powers that be probably couldn’t stomach the thoughts of a Georgie All American Grad being trusted to coach the Jackets against the Dwags. I have wondered how different things would be if Mac had gotten the job. He is 62 now @ still in coaching (I forget where). We’ll never know. He is too old to consider now. Too bad for him.

No way you win in the SEC from rock bottom in 3 years. Saban set the bat at Bama, and it’s really not fair. Dooley has done a pretty good job. Remember, he’s growing into the job himself. College Football is a BILLION dollar business and Bobby Petrino is the best coach on the sidelines right now.

Tennessee will hire Petrino.

I liked the “fire in the belly” approach that CPJ brought to GT at first, but CPJ’s lack of a CEO mentality with regards to building ALL aspects of the team is showing more and more.

What about his attitude towards recruiting? I mean some of that “I don’t care where you go, kid” attitude is slightly refreshing, but let’s face it. GT is not bringing in the level of talent they deserve. And don’t give me that crap about the academics. Stanford Univ. anybody???

Hire the goose to be the qb coach and hire the fridge to run the offense. Tech needs to make big changes to get the roster back to normal. Will be intresting to see what the running backs do when CPJ is fired.

If Tech is playing a 3-4 next season, the NT (Green) is 6′0, 280 unless a freshman starts. The biggest returning DE on the 2-deep is 275 lb. Gotsis has played as a freshman, and he is 300+. Now try to fit those DEs into a 4-3 as DTs. Attaochu and Watts would likely be the DEs in a 4-3, plus Crenshaw. Not counting redshirts.

And what ever makes anyone think Whisenhut would leave the NFL for GT? That’s not gonna happen unless he gets fired. And that’s not gonna happen as long as they continue to get to the playoffs, or at least are on the cusp of reaching the playoffs. I can only guess at what he would tell them. I could be wrong. And if Arizona fired Whisenhut, I don’t know that GT could afford him. Why would he take a big pay cut to coach his alma mater? More prestige in being 1 of 32! Small club there!

Gotsis actually started Saturday (I know he was in for the 2nd snap thru binoculars) & I didn’t see a substitution. He lined up at both DT & DE (seeing his #96 thru binoculars). Hard to miss his white arms out there. Poor kid McCordes (#35) looked completely lost. He didn’t play in the 2nd half that I saw (freshman).

I’ve been considering whether to respond to something or not. While I realize the 1st team QB is not the most talented guy, he is a hard working, dedicated individual that deserves some respect. He tries hard to lead the team to a win. He has turned over a lead in 3 of the last 4 losses to the defense. Those games should have never went to OT, but the defense could not get a stop in the 3 OT games. All that was needed in 1 of them was 1 play on 4th down in the VT game. Has he made mistakes? Yes. Is that a reason to call him “Garbage”? NO!! He is not garbage, and I resent some jack wad calling him that. It is your right to not like his play making ability, but please refrain from calling him garbage. CPJ has made mistakes too. He is not garbage either. Dislike him & his play calling & coaching, but he is not “Garbage”. I could call you a low life pile of trash for calling another decent human being “GARBAGE”, but I won’t. I shall rise above such name calling. I will simply consider the source, a butt sniffing leg humping dwag troll.

CPJ is a small college coach. He is too dumb to know that his schemes, his players, wll not perform well at this level; mediocre as IT IS.

LOOK at GT’s record over that last few games over two years: They have lost about 8, winning only 3 or 4. See? Beyond a very medicore UGA club last year, WHO has GT played??? NO ONE !!!!

CPJ was vastly over rated and his middle school O and his 2 and 3 star kids cannot/willnot EVER get it done. The woefull ACC’s better teams are on to his wishbone O now. The CPJ era HAS come and gone.

From here on out ………………….it will turn ugly. GT changes a coach about every 4. 3 years and CPJ is right there. This stat has been true since Dodd slinked away in the 1968, after he was HUMILIATED in the Orange Bowl by SEC Florida.

Dodd, Fulmer, Ross, Curry, Lewis, O’Leary, Carson, CPJ, and about 4 other GT coaches over the last 42 years. What a dreadful record.

Everybody has a bad year….we do too, sometimes. But that was the most sincere lack of effort defensively I have seen in a long time. No tackling at all. And, quite frankly, by the end of the game kinda “grabin’” for Cunningham out of fear of being run over! The worst thing is that on the touchdown he scored that got called back (and I watched the whole game) that was a b.s. call! (Anybody that saw it knows it!) Again, I pulled for y’all and I know that losing is part of it. However, the dominating butt-whippin’ that ocurred Saturday was a sincere testament to lack of talent and effort, especially defensively. On the D-side, y’all gotta start over.

What a reversal and in a way ironic. These teams from the big conferences schedule so called cream puffs to pad their records and to get in some practice. I see this in a similar manner when the bull gets the better of the runner or the matador. It’s kind of funny that Tech paid for this whipping.

Fact, most college football players want to go pro. The talent will never go to tech in an offense that nobody in the NFL runs. A qb recruit that is an ok passer will go to the WAC instead for a chance to run a pro offense, not a gimmick one. Also WR won’t come when they block 95% of their time. This is the main problem. Stafford went to UGA of other schools because they ran a pro offense, same with other positions. You thin Calvin Johnson would have went to tech if cpj was there, 99% answer would be no.
