Live blog: Georgia Tech-Middle Tennessee State
Is there a hangover?
Georgia Tech has more margin for error against Middle Tennessee State than it would against an ACC opponent, but not so much that it can sleepwalk through Bobby Dodd Stadium and count on winning. A week after a crushing loss to Miami, the Yellow Jackets can show they’ve put it behind them and are ready to play their final eight regular-season games with a dominating effort against MTSU. A-back Orwin Smith said the team has finished its moping and is moving forward.
How does the defense handle the Blue Raiders?
After Miami played the Tech defense like a fiddle, the Jackets will play an offense of a different stripe. The Blue Raiders operate a spread offense that stretches defenses sideline to sideline. They also work without a huddle, which Miami used to give the Jackets problems last week. With MTSU quarterback Logan Kilgore often throwing short routes, it may be difficult for Tech to pressure him, so effective coverage and good tackling will be essential.
Will the backups get playing time?
Given that Tech was a 27.5-point favorite on Thursday and has beaten MTSU by a combined 56 points in the past two seasons, there is some expectation that the Jackets will win, and possibly handily. Should that prove to be the case, coach Paul Johnson will have the opportunity to stretch the legs of some second- and third-teamers for possibly the last time this season. Defensive linemen Anthony Williams and Adam Gotsis, inside linebacker Anthony Harrell, quarterback Vad Lee and guard Trey Braun could make cases for more playing time.
A win for Georgia Tech would …
Improve its record against teams with “Blue” in their nickname (Duke Blue Devils, Presbyterian Blue Hose and MTSU Blue Raiders) to 55-30-1.
A win for Middle Tennessee State would …
Be the third win this season for a Sun Belt Conference team against a BCS conference team (Louisiana-Monroe over Arkansas, Western Kentucky over Kentucky).
Matchup to watch
MTSU wide receiver Anthony Amos vs. Tech cornerback Rod Sweeting
Amos, a former walk-on, has caught 21 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns in three games this season. He was added to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top wide receiver. Sweeting had a tough game against the Hurricanes and will have another challenge when lined up across from Amos.

Last meeting: Last September in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the Jackets scored on their first play from scrimmage, a 73-yard touchdown pass to Tony Zenon and led 28-0 in the second quarter on their way to a 49-21 win. Quarterback Tevin Washington completed five of eight passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

THIS is why UGA is and always will be so much better than Tech. We play on national tv week in and week out, Tech is LUCKY to get one or two national televised games a year. Tech will NEVER be on the same level as UGA. EVER. And this year in Athens, I will bring out the MERCY RULE for Tech because UGA is going to hurt them.

Win or lose , what you are seeing from GT is because of what happens in Feb.
If you start beating out MTSU for Recruits, then you’ll find yourself playing close games with MTSU during the season.
RECRUITING is 75-80% of what is responsible for the ultimate success of a BCS-level HC, those are Urban Meyer’s own words.
Ergo, guys that are “tireless Recruiters” tend to have the better teams, even Oregon found themselves a “tireless Recruiter” and look at what has happened to their FB program.
GT should never be neck-and-neck with MTSU for half of a game.

So Paul Johnson banished Al Groh to the booth. That’s one step closer to being fired. Probably so he didn’t cuss him out and yell at him on the sideline. The pass breakup where two GT defenders were behind the WR yet broke up the pass due to it being thrown short was a perfect example of what is wrong on defense. Two defenders, essentially blocking themselves while a WR has a step on them both.
You CANNOT blame the offense. It’s deflating when the defense is giving up long drive after long drive. It rests opposing defenses. It gives opponents confidence. Look at how Johnson is tightening up late in games. His playcalling is being affected by a lack of confidence in his defense. Likewise, other teams’ defenses can take chances against our offense, have some confidence (while being rested), knowing they can bank on their offense putting up points. The complete lack of defense is not only outright losing us games, it’s also hampering the effectiveness of our offense.

Here is a blistering and I mean blistering thing to see. Most teams would just take a knee for the half. MT didn’t… They know that GT’s defense is so bad, they ran plays. This has to be a slap in the face to CAG.. CPJ has got to see how no one and I mean no one respects “no show”… They see GT on the schedule and the OC from the other team just starts licking his chops.. As a tech fan, you just feel like sticking your head in the sand. CPJ… I’m for hire.. I know defense.. I know the 3-4.. Although with the personnel, you should be running a 5-2 defense. You expect your QB to be the leader. When the leader’s hogging nearly all the glory (what little there is this year), I believe it affects the whole team psychologically. “But he scored!’ you say. Give somebody else a chance; they can score, too. I’ve been a Tech fan for as long as I’ve followed college football, and I don’t like what I’m seeing this year out of my Jackets – especially the HC (same ‘ol same ‘ol – hey, coach, it’s not against the rules to throw two forward passes in a row
), DC (no tackling, playing too far off the defenders), and QB (not an option quarterback; shouldn’t even be in there most of the time).

If the D is missing tackles, it’s the coaches fault. They are not fundamentally sound. The players are simply not ready to play and it shows week in and week out. I’m on the get rid of Groh train.

Here in Charleston (SC) we get the WFU v Duke game…DU is actually looking good and they are winning at WFU’s field. Sooo, looks like the DU game will not be a gimme either.
So, what’s the excuse THIS week?? Emotional letdown from the miami game? mLooking ahead to the CU game? Burdell; if we can’t get athletes to play D how is it that we do get athletes to play O? The offense is playing well enouigh to win every game that we play – the D is responsible for our 2 losses and our possible 3rd loss today (and our 4th loss next week). Enough excuses, Groh must GO! If he can’t get his kids to figure out how to play his scheme, then change the scheme or change the coach. PJ is an excellent offensive coordinator. He is a poor head coach. He’s made poor decision after poor decision on DC. He needs a recruiting coordinator. He needs a special teams coordinator. His offense is nearly flawless with the right QB, but he has nothing else.

Maybe Tech can pull a Notre Dame and play all sports in the ACC except football. I think they would be a football powerhouse at the D II level. They would have similar, heck maybe even superior, talent as every school they play. Then Paul Johnson could be the greatest coach every…make every Tech fan happy! @GT They aren’t that great… VT loss to a lowly Pitt team.. UVA barely won against a depleted Penn St. I don’t put much stake into that. The issue is CAG doesn’t know the first thing about the 3-4. No blitzes, no zone blitzes, not even running a LB into the 2 or gaps. Oh and the gap assignments are not even there. No gap assignment will pretty much kill the 3-4 scheme. This has to be coaching. If the basics of the 3-4 can’t be put in to the game plan, they whole thing will fail. Groh is a failure, he is a loser and the sooner he is gone the better.

Like I said last week…at the end of the year cut your losses with Paul Johnson (unless he can beat Georgia). Get on the phone with George O’Leary and Ralph Friedgen. For what you’re paying Johnson (2.6MM, I believe) you could hire both of them. I’d bet they both have 7-10 years of coaching left in them. What is obvious is that Al Groh’s coaching isn’t working. The 3-4 could work and does work. Just look down the road. Or at the Patriots. Al Groh on the other hand…
Why are our DL two yards off the line of scrimmage before the snap? Why is there so much space between them with no one around to fill it when they run it up the middle? It’s brutal watching this defense. At this point just fire Al Groh after this game, see what might change from that, play Vad Lee more and prepare for next year.

Here’s a history lesson for CPJ apologists….late 80’s early 90’s Big Ten all ran some form of this foolishness. Then along came Schnellenberger @ Miami and Bowden at FSU with TEAM SPEED. As Miami has shown for tha last 4 years, if ur fast u will BEAT this Offense EVERY time. Its simple, know your assignments and run to a spot. I’m a loyal GT alum and fan and always will be but this is too hard to watch!
We don’t have our best athletes on the field (Vad Lee, Snoddy,etc.), the team is completely unprepared and unaware (first down marker, safety last week) and the coaches have lost the team.
Fire both Johnson and Groh NOW and get a jump start on next year. Johnson will never change, he will never start and play his best athletes because he thinks its all about him and his scheme and he will never work hard to recruit. Fire him IMMEDIATELY! Cut your loses and start over!

We do have some good athletes. That is a BS cop out. Some of them are not on the field.
GT is not prepared on either side of the ball in basic fundamental football. They don’t know where the first down sticks are? They don’t know more than one check down when they come to the line.
Coaching is the problem. An Offensive Coordinator is not a head coach. Just a really arrogant offensive coordinator with a head coach title and salary. (See Mike Martz NFL and June Jones). Great coordinators but not head coaches.
Cut the losses fire CPJ and AG and move on NOW! Even if they come back and win this game it doesn’t change the fundamental problems of; Poor Coaching (Preparation), Poor Recruiting and Arrogance!

The AD had to facepalm on that one. MTSU saw that Tech’s defense wasn’t even on the field and ran up and in for a TD. Tech’s D was still running onto the field when the play was already snapped.

In Closing my 13 year old daughte informed me GT is now her 3rd favorite team. GT used to be her favorite, but now its Auburn then Bama then GT. We just lost a young Tech fan !!!!!!! How many more we gonna loose after this year ???

Been watching MTSU for 2-3 yrs. expecting them to break out big time. They are good, and by the way, have lots of Georgia players on the team. They are disciplined, well-coached, and their uni colors are fantastic and sharp-looking. My favorite out of state team-MTSU! They are indeed good!

I’m a Tech fan, but I found myself pulling for MTS around the third quarter. Tech needs a total house cleaning, and maybe this will be the start of it.
I’d rather go 1-10 for a couple of years with the HOPE of maybe being good again someday, than 7-6 every year with the knowledge that we will NEVER be more than average.
The defense sucks. The offense can’t do anything when it HAS TO.

There’s NO WAY will win their final 7 games. Could they? Well, they still have to play them, but even the mindset of CAN’T win their final 7 games is pretty much a definite. PJ will try to say there’s still a lot to play for, but after seeing (via ESPN gamecast) what MTSU’s O do what it did today, this time CAN’T is the most sure thing there has even been in sports.
With that being said, it’s time to play Vad. TW, like Al Groh, should be dropped to the 2nd team.

Probably the best thing that could have happened today. Honestly, what if GT won 7 or 8 games and lost to Clems and UGA which WILL happen. Then PJ would still be considered an ok coach and were stuck with this gargage regime for more years to come. Someone mentioned Giff Smith as D coord, hell offer him the HC job, he is the best recruiter we ever had.

@ Froggy…..my first thought is to Mike Leach…he has Ga ties in Valdosta, he runs a kooky spread offense and has put ppl in the NFL. I have a theory. With the early appearance of Vad it seems logical to figure he got some extra snaps this week. Extra snaps to prepare him for a bit more playing time. That is fine except it sets the stage for the team to think it will be a cake walk and time to get new guys some game experience which can lead to over confidence or complacency. As soon as something goes wrong the team collapses which looks like what happened today.

When MTSU’s athletes are better than yours, as in the case today, its time for a change. I’m REALLY afraid that he will be given one more year after this one to see if he can right the ship. Thats it! I’ve been a Tech fan for 33 yrs. and i haven’t seen a D play with less heart ever. They are a bunch of pansies and are afraid to tackle. I’m through with Tech football for good. From this day forward I will no longer watch, or care if they ever win another football game. PJ and Groth are terrible coaches and have no clue how to motivate young players. I’ve backed PJ for the past few yrs. when alot of people bashed him. No more. And for Groth. Well todays game proves that he has lost his ability to coach defense. Sure can’t wait forTech basketball to start, and thank goodness i still have the Falcons.

Clemson 56 GT 13, thats how I see it…….maybe its me, but why have a team (GT) that runs the ball down the field, then when they get in the red zone the coach calls the QB’s number, other player deserve to score, what Tevin has 10 or 11 TDs, then next person has 3, not fair, why play hard and not be rewarded, I’m just saying!

Yes Tech is through, I can not see them beating Clemson, BYU, mainly UGA, North Carolina, not evening Duke and Boston College, its crazy, watching this game during the middle of the 3rd quarter its just look like this team is just going through the motion, with a coach like Paul Johnson and A Groh, the kids are not buying into their bull, wake up its a new day, now I don’t think the Drad is on the hot seat because of the other sports teams are doing ok, I really believe the basketball team will be better but not good, so that will and other sports will keep his job, but the people who support the football team will demand a change, you can get rid of the Defense Coord, but everybody needs to go, from the head coach to the ball boy, thats the only way! (sad but its true) I am not buying into its the academic anymore, we can get good player and better student to come to GT, you got to give them a product they want and need, and hell no not that triple option sh_t! We won a National Championship before and played great before, why not now!

The numbers don’t lie. Johnson is out of here this year or the next unless he does one of two things.
1) goes 2-0 in bowl games. This means that he gets to at least a toilet bowl this year.
2) goes 1-1 against UGA. Highly unlikely this year. We can only hope for next year.
Should be able to get the family to a game this year for under $25.

I have posted our problems at the beginning of the season. Our problem today. Is our coaching staff believes that past experience somehow means something today. You could hear it in Coaches voice on Wednesday during the coaches show. He has succumb to mediocrity. The players have succumb to mediocrity and are mentally weak. Tackling is a basic fundamental in football. Week in and week out for 6 years we don’t tackle. We make the same mistakes from top to bottom over and over and never change. Listen, Practice Monday should be nothing but tackle drills for the Defense. On Offense, It should be nothing but blocking. Anything to increase mental toughness. For the Coaches, for get working on plays just work on how to rush the QB. How to block, how to catch, how to pay attention in the film room, how to throw a pass, how to pick the ball, how to run the option. How to block, how to read defenses, how to fight and win, instead of how to fight hoping not to lose. How to handle winning and how to put teams away. It is a mental challenge for both coaches and players and your losing it. Change may have to come. But, it is the entire program from my experience that needs to be changed. There is a difference between believing and wishing. I believe our program mentally approaches each game wishing for the best. That is why we are losing.

MTSU went with too much trickeration early in the game and LEFT 10-17 “points on the field”, had MTSU played a clean game and their HC stayed with their power run game, MTSU would have EASILY scored 60+ points on GT today.
Think about that, 60+ points to a non-BCS D1-A team?

It’s very simple. We don’t have the players. Paul Johnson thinks he doesn’t need them. He believes that with his system and offensive genius he can win with mediocre talent. And he can sometimes. But when you play someone with far superior talent, you will lose more than you will win, and most of the teams we play have superior talent. Then you have games like today where the coach needs to make sure his team steps up and that is where PJ is failing. I don’t know for sure, but he comes across on the screen like he’s just disgusted and can’t be bothered to coach his players. We lost to a team we shouldn’t have and that’s going to happen from time to time, it’s just more glaring when you are playing on the edge and have no margin for error.

I love the potential of what CPJ’s offense can do and Al Groh’s defense has been good in the past. But both forget that it’s how you call the game is what makes a difference. CPJ has been know to run a play successfully until the defense stops it. Well now he runs plays that they stop and stops running plays that work. ie, Pistol read option was killing Miami. Why did we stop? GOD only knows because CPJ won’t. Everyone knows the slant has been killing us. So why don’t we play bump or cloud defense on 3rd downs to take the slat away? GOD only knows. Groh doesn’t. DRad believes that a good bowl visit is better than instilling a mentality that it is Championships or bust. And guess what, many of our money alumni believe that to be true too. Can you see our dilemma ? We don’t fill our stands because our money is better spent elsewhere until we find is worthy to invest. A tougher out of conference schedule would lure more people to buy tickets, hence filling the stadium and raising more money for the program. But, DRad would rather have empty seats a mediocre program and bowl bids to Shreveport, Boise and El Paso. Which no one travels too. Tech needs better players, better coaches and better expectations.

now for all of you out there who think paul johnson suck as a head coach this is not true although the passing offense suffers we have been the in the two or three rushing team in the nation how ever enter Vad Lee that will open things up in the passing game then the offense did slip today with holding on to the ball but im not turning on this offense it works and i think with a little more passing we can be the ish even unstoppable now with that lets get to the real problem DEFENSE you know what make the SEC such a good conference its there Defenses Bama, LSU, GA, Fla all of them have the defenses to win with we don’t Fire Al Groh Today send him back to the Pats or Va or the Gaints just get him out of town the other slight problem with Ga Tech and even the ACC is that there are not a lot of 5star high school recruits that can cut the mustard in the grades department coming out of high school so the can’t and dont come to Tech and the ACC not that they are’nt recuited ask some of them the SEC has lower Standard in that department including UGA so with that thats the luck of the draw but look in the NFL and see how may starters went to GA tech on both sides of the ball some of them even recruited by paul johnson some by chan gailey but even the ones chan gailey recuited stayed at tech and the nfl loves them………. I say again get rid of AL Groh.
