“I told coach [Rick] Stockstill after the game they got after us and whipped our butts. I have to give Middle Tennessee a lot of credit because they played hard. But after saying that, it was embarrassing. I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it. We didn’t play with a lot of energy. We turned the ball over — we can’t do that — and we probably had as bad a day tackling as I’ve seen, maybe worse than last week. The bottom line we didn’t do anything really good. We didn’t block very well, we didn’t catch, we didn’t throw and when you do that and turn the ball over you get beat. That’s it in a nutshell, I guess.”
“Clearly we’ve got issues, we’ve got issues we have to address, there’s no doubt about that.”
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson
“It could have. We just weren’t ready to play. We talked, we tried all sorts of different angles, but they didn’t come ready to play. So that comes back to me.”
Johnson on whether last week’s loss to Miami affected Saturday’s performance
“After the game, I’m just considering going and watching the tape.”
Johnson on whether he’s considering any changes on the staff
“I’m as disappointed as I’m sure the fans are. I’m embarrassed, too, and I’m going to do everything in my power to fix this and get it right. That’s all I can do.”
Johnson on what he would tell fans after the game
“This is as tough a loss as we’ve had since I’ve been here. We have to wash our memories. All we can do Sunday is get ready for Clemson and focus on the little things and things you can control.”
Tech quarterback Tevin Washington
“We came out too flat today, and when you give another team energy, give them momentum, it’s hard to stop once they get going.”
Washington on coming out flat
“That’s a hard question to answer. We’re a family out there and just trying to make plays. I’m really not sure.”
Tech linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days on what’s affected the defense the past two weeks
“That’s one of the main things that coach [Johnson] puts emphasis on is the missed assignments. That’s what hurts us. We made plays but when it was time for real crucial ones that didn’t require much yardage we just couldn’t get them. That hurt us.”
Tech A-back Orwin Smith on the Jackets’ mistakes
“It affected us, but then again the next guy should be able to step up and take his place. I feel like we are a brotherhood out there and we live off each other. It didn’t affect us.”
Tech linebacker Quayshawn Nealy on playing without Jeremiah Attaochu
“This was a hard-fought physical game. I thought our conditioning was a factor in the game. We kept pushing, we kept pressing, and we kept coming after them. On defense, we were relentless. We were fast off the ground. We didn’t lay around.”
Middle Tennessee state coach Rick Stockstill

We could not tackle them, yet went down on several toe tackles… seemed like we were playing two hand touch. I mentioned that the reason Tevin is starting is that he looks good in practice. Given the way our defense played, I could look good in practice. If Al was in the box, he should have seen the things we saw and made adjustments. Just did not happen. We make other players look like All Americans….. not to take anything from MTSU- they played better, smarter and more technical than we had all season- and with VT losing another game this week… amazing how bad we look.

Tevin would not start for MTSU.Our defense was awful but our offense gave the other team too many chances.I said before the game if we lost this game both Groh and Johnson should be fired at the end of the season. I still feel that way. We will be lucky to be 6-6 at the end of the season.UGA will score every time they have the ball and never have to punt when we play them.Clemson will probably have over 600 yards of total offense next week.Last week we sucked. This week was embarassing.

At least Johnson is owing up to this loss. But all in all, there needs to be some serious coaching staff changes, maybe even CPJ.
Losing to VT in overtime in Blacksburg is one thing. Blowing a 14 point lead against Miami and losing by 21 to MTSU is completely different. There is a lack of coaching, a lack of talent, and a lack of good ole fashioned heart on the field.
And for crying out loud, bench Tevin. I hate to throw Tevin under the bus and I am not one of these guys that has called Vad’s name for the past 2 years, but Tevin is obviously limited and un-athletic. Yes he is composed (at times), but he doesn’t have the jets nor the arm that Lee does. He trips when scrambling out of the pocket and throws an interception to a wide-open receiver down field becaus he cant get enough lift on the ball. It’s depressing to watch.

There was one play today where Tevin showed how much he cares, and I loved it. Late in the game, he was scrambling and he literally hurdled over the defenders on the sideline, reaching for and making a first down. Frankly, I didn’t think he had it in him to do that.

Lots of folks complain about the 3-4. Maybe, maybe not. 3-4, 4-3, I don’t know. What I do know is you can’t scheme for tackling and covering receivers. A 3-4 doesn’t just bounce off, or entirely miss tackles. That’s what’s embarrassing. Brotherhood my behind! Family. Bull. Words, boys, don’t make up for what I’ve been seeing. You look like a bunch of sleepwalkers, taking the day off. I don’t know how much of this is on the coaches, how much on the players. Neither looks to have much heart and pride. But I do know the coaches are the ones who get fired. Paul Johnson needs to worry how long GA Tech pays $2 million for this product. He should be embarrassed. I wouldfeel better about seeing freshmen out there who would give an effort. I said early this year, I’m sure he’s a wonderful kid, but if Tevin is the best we have, we’re in for a long year.

Strength and conditioning have been severely lacking at Tech for years. Not just CPJ’s tenure. How pathetic is it when a player from freaking MTSU tells his hometown newspaper after the game that they were just in way better shape and condition and stronger/faster than Tech?!?! See article above where MTSU coach openly says the same thing. We are fat and slow. They beat us up and down. Did everyone see the back, Cunningham, repeatedly run over our defensive backs?

Two facts that scare me: First, either MTSU is better than Miami and Va Tech or we are getting worse. Second, MTSU gained control in the second half…after we made half time adjustments. So again, we get worse as we gain playing time.

There is a problem at GT which separates the offense and the defense under the head coach. It is apparent that we are seeing a separation of groups because whenever your head coach actually carries the ball for one or the other without success that is where to look. Paul needs to take over the defense and watch his offense not score. A head coach has to take over control of the team which is all players and all teams. Al Groh needs to change his model the players are confused.
When you are trying to outsmart them most of the time you lose the ability to play with recklessness.
Tevin is a nice kid however bench him for the future lest Paul will be watching Vad from another job. Can we stop running the QB sneak. Why because when we get to practice our offense. WE ARE PLAYING AFRAID.

4 (or was it more) turnovers, Teven throws high, low, slow and late balls, blocking was aweful (saw two linemen hit…no, can’t say hit…more like lightly pushed… a LB, left the block and the guy made the tackle. Don’t know if the back was in the hole late or not. Unbelievable lack of tackling and getting juked out of their socks when one on one, Same play gashing us play after play. MT QB plainly saw the end isolated on the LB with no help close and checked to the quick slant for the TD. Defense looked like they were just ready to shower by the end. Completely humbled, disheartened, humiliated and beaten.

Our D-line is just terrible. The entire line is full of upperclassmen but TJ plays like a 210lb lineman. Cross can’t tackle a QB and Dieke/Cummings are just terrible. Neither of them can get off their blocks or penetrate. Andy McCollum can’t develop a player; nor he can recruit. There are plenty of recruits in GA that could start at GT tomorrow but none will sign cuz this idiot (McCollum) can’t recruit nor develop a player. Fire him NOW! MTSU was smart enough to do that. Our tackling today was actually worse than the Virginia defenders when we played them. I didn’t think that was possible. We didn’t have anywhere near the intensity level as MTSU. Some of that may have been due to conditioning late in the game, but it doesn’t explain getting blown off the ball on key downs, getting beat badly on pass blocking and sliding off tackles they way we did. That comes from a lack of preparedness and focus on fundamentals and that squarely falls on the coaching staff. We missed some key players, were coming off a demoralizing loss against Miami, but they should have been more ready to play. CPJ said they talked about it. Is that all they did last week? I remember a comment years back from Bobby Ross after an embarrassing loss. He said something to the effect that “the Georgia Tech fans deserve better”. I had a sense then he was going to take care of it. He did. I watched them beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl a couple years later. I wish I felt the same way about CPJ. The only coach I would commend this year is the new special teams. Night and day from last year. Solid tackles, solid coverage downfield. They’ve been doing the little things right and busting some big plays in the process.

That was ugly…………….
On offense: multiple failures in pass blocking by O-line—-OT got beat often by blitzing LB (pathetic effort on our part)
TW is timid in his passing—he guides it on short passes, underthrows it on long passes. If we are truly trying to win the game and we need to pass the ball, then he needs to be replaced with either Days or Vad as either of them can throw the ball better. Yes, he’s the leader on the team and runs the TO well, but a man’s got to know his limitations…..and passing is his. I’ve been saying to platoon the QB spot all year. CPJ puts in Vad and he runs 6 plays with 4 of them dive plays. If Vad does not read/execute well on the TO, then do not run it with him in the game. Let him run from the pistol and throw the ball. Adjust your play calling to fit your personnel.
On Defense: It actually could have been worse. We had blown coverages where they did not take advantage of it. Clemson is drooling………… CAG may have a SuperBowl ring and be a genuis, but it’s not translating to the players on the field. Our sub packages arrive on the field late, DLs are looking at each other wondering what to do—players are out of position, mass confusion in covering the slot receiver, the whole system is in utter chaos. We need to simplify things quickly because we’re not even doing the fundamentals right. Yesterday looked like the first day of spring camp and not mid-season.
I was at Tech, when we went 1-9-1 so I know pain…..not going to rant and rave about giving up season tickets or off with their heads for the coaches, but they’ve got their work cut off for them. Players too…we need to rally…..in adversity it’s one day at a time. Forget about season goals, treat each game as being your last chance to play the game and give all you got. And true fans get behind their team.

I would be satisfied for GT to simply fire the coaching staff, forfeit all of our games until such time as we have paid out their contracts and start over. Johnson says they need to work on the little things? Really? Looks like some pretty big things are very messed up. I’m sure Tevan is a great kid, but he’s out of his league, and Johnson needs to try someone else in that role. (Reminds me of Gailey and Reggie Ball, and we know how that ended). Clearly Al Groh is at the end of his road. And, now that the element of surprise is gone, Johnson’s offense requires better execution than it is getting; if Johnson is unable to recruit the quality of talent he needs to successfully run his offense at this level of play, he needs to go, as well. All in all, it’s probably time to move on.

From Yahoo Sports Week 5 Winners and losers article, naturally, GT was in the ‘losers’ grouping . . .
Georgia Tech: If you thought Georgia Tech snatching defeat from the hands of victory against Miami last week was the low point, well, look away. The Yellow Jackets’ 49-28 loss to Middle Tennessee State (yes, Middle Tennessee State) was the first loss to a non-BCS school since 1996 and the first time the Yellow Jackets had suffered consecutive home losses since 1988. Ever noticed that Groh rhymes with Go? Tech’s defense stands around in a stupor, which is why they are so easy to block. They are not play makers. The D- Line may as well bring a roll up mattress on to the field. At least that way somebody might trip over them while their lounging. Big play line backers? Hah! Groh was in the booth, but that wasn’t far enough from the field. The parking lot would have been too close, unless it was at Wal-Mart pushing buggies.
Jeff Greene is not the go to guy. He does not know how to maneuver to the ball or keep the 5′ 9″ corner backs from making a big play.

Rotting from the top: D Rad is responsible for losing the ACC title and several scholarships (by disregarding NCAA instructions) and goes on as if nothing happened. No responsibility or accountability. In he private sector he would have been gone then. Must be the way a bureaucracy works. Arrogant and unaccountable. Does not represent Tech. If he is not an SEC plant, he sure missed a great opportunity. Yes the AD.
The coaching selection speaking for himself: feel like punching someone/hanging myself. Everyone wants to play for a violent suicidal coach. We can see how motivated the current team is. And after last years Walmart and “r” word comment on radio, only to get whipped. Not representative of Tech. Even uga fans agree with me on this.
Suggestion: Bobby Cremins -AD, Mark Price assistant AD these guys care about representing Tech. Let them start the search now. Clean sheet, find a coach that understands the opportunity here.
The arrogant and irresponsible need to be let go, they do not represent Tech. To let them go on is a waste of a great opportunity (Coach Ross in 1990 proved it) and irresponsible in and of itself.
Alumni with influence need to take charge now.
This is rotting from the top and no one seems to give a damn.

Tech doesn’t have enough big, strong, fast, skilled athletes. I don’t know that they ever will be able to recruit against the football factories without further lowering standards. None of that excuses the lack of maximum effort apparent the last two weeks. There is no way MTSU (or even Miami) has talent so superior to Tech’s that they can have their way on offense and defense if the Jackets played with intensity.

@ Silly Mutts……actually I think we have good enough material on the line, for the most part; they just are not getting it done. And I think our current receivers are fine; the problem is that Tevin seldom gets the ball to them. But I agree that starting Vad Lee probably isn’t going to change anything.

Tech is doomed with Johnson as coach……offense doesn’t work and defense is high schoolish……Johnson is a pitiful recruiter and that’s where you win in college football……in other words Johnson isn’t doing his job and if he was doing a 9 -5 job he would be fired for non performing

I think Ralph Friedgen is just down the road. Can’t be any worse. I barely made a noise after halftime. I thought this might be a special season, but it went south yesterday. My wife is right, GT will break your heart. I take it way too serious, but it’s just our way of life in the south. Bring back the “Fridge”.

I cannot believe that the Tech faithful will not have the head of Al Groh hosted outside the GTAA offices tomorrow. Otherwise I can see the BYU and Duke games being played in Brookwood High School’s stadium as that would be the sum total of fans at the games.
I know the GT band and cheerleaders will be at the game(s), but they are required to be there whether or not the football team shows up.

Start at the top. Replace the man on top, then replace the coaches, almost all the coaches. We old Tech men have had years of experience running companies. Changeing leadership is often required to turn the ship of business and so it is with football. But let me ask you all a question; If you read the trash about the players would you want to accept an offer to play? It’s a coach’s duty to build up his team. If we grip about about what a player does on the field are we helping the player, the team, or the future of Tech football?
START WHERE IT COUNTS, AT THE TOP!

A lot of old Tech men and now women, have had problems in business. Correcting the problems often require sad changes at the top. So it is with football and other sports. When we lose faith in a man or his system, it time to change. That change must start at the very top. Then with knowledge, direction, and determination change the coaches…. All of them if necessary. I have reached that place. We must understand that we need to stop gripping about individual players. The folks gripping most likely can’t do haft a good as the kids on the field. Leave them alone. A coaches’ job is to build up and develop his players. If you were a great young football player with an invitation to play at Tech, would you consider the school where a bunch of second rate farts grip about your play? This affects the individual players and the whole team,,,, Now and in the Future.

Tech proved that if you are out of position/confused on defense and don’t wrap up when tackling, the other team will score on you no matter who they are. MTSU came to play and we didn’t. I don’t think they punted until the 3rd quarter.
The defense is getting worse, not better as the season goes on and the offense has apparently hit a brick wall too. The coaching staff can only do so much and whatever they are doing not effective. .

Open letter to Ga. Tech Football Team:
I have been a Fan of the school you represent since I found out as a child that being born in this state I had to choose between the Georgia Institute of Technology and that Bastion of higher education in Athens. Despite my family’s heritage and loyalty to Georgia I chose Tech.
I chose Tech and what it stood for because of the school not the Football team. I was never as proud of that decision as I was during the Jan Kemp era at the other school.
You represent a school that has given us a President, Nobel laureates, Astronauts, not to mention Jeff Foxworthy.
What I am saying is that I personally hold you to a higher standard. What I saw the last 2 Saturdays embarrassed me and made me sick to my stomach.
The fact that you lost to Miami doesn’t bother me the fact that you quit, now that bothers me. When Miami tied the game to take it to overtime you quit, Miami didn’t.
This last Saturday you played a team that had no where near the talent you have. You may have been feeling sorry for yourself but Middle Tenn. didn’t feel sorry for you. They beat you in every phase of the game. You quit before the game even started. I will not tolerate a quitter. I will not support of spend my money to see a bunch of quitters. I hope you don’t think Clemson will feel sorry for you.
A note to your defense, the art of tackling seems to be a thing of the past. To tackle is to wrap the runner up. It probably won’t make Sports Center’s highlights like a knock down or dive at the feet will but it will bring the runner down. As silly as that sounds that is your objective. You need to get bask to basics, PERIOD.
In November I am going to Philadelphia to watch 2 teams’ play that represents the values I look for in an institution.
You watch the Army Navy game and you will not see a quitter. When they graduate they go on to defend our lives with theirs. If they quit, we the United States of America lose.
Their Football teams are not in the top 10 but their players and students represent what this country should stand for. Thank God they don’t know the meaning of QUIT.
I can take the smart ass comments that about 3 of my FB friends make because the things you should represent do not matter to them. To them you are Nerds and Football is everything.
I respect my family and friends that attended UGA or others that support their “Dawgs” because in most cases I know that they are proud of their school first and their football team second.
To the others you need to get a life and stop living your life through your football team. Win or loose it will have no effect on your life.
To be a QUITTER gets easier and easier. That gentlemen, will have an effect on your life.

It’s sure as hell not helping with all the injuries on defense, but also I think we’ve had the wind taken out of us with these losses. If we were 4-0 and playing MTSU, I think it would have been a different story. I kept hearing about how the whole team left the Va Tech behind and moved on, and I believe it considering it was the first game, but it truly seems as if the Miami loss is carried a much larger toll on the players. They looked completely at of it, and showed no enthusiasm. Obviously, the main goal in this season now is just making a bowl game, which is still attainable, but in order to do that, they need play stop believing they’re losers or it’s gonna end up showing more so on the field.

IMNTBHO…..all any fan has the “right” to expect from their team. To be competitive! To put itself in a position to win at the end the game! To compete for the conference championship! To actually be the champion every now & again! To be competitive against their #1 rival & beat said rival every now & again! Maybe be “lucky” enough to even be in the mix for the MNC every now & again & maybe actually upsey the applecart & win it! If the fan’s team can just be competitive, all of the rest will fall in place. Like any business, it was not created to give us a job. No college/institution was created to give us a sports team to cheer for….that is supposed to secondary. Do we want/expect more? Do we want/expect to win like Alabama? Many fans answer those questions yes. Will they get their wish? Not likely. Enjoy your team’s successes & hurt for their losses. And live with both. And always have pride in your”s & their achievements. Wear your colors proudly. Selah.
will you go to the prom with me, mom?

This loss has to be considered the most deflating, embarrassing and historic for sure. Being upset by an underdog is one thing but losing by 21 freaking points??? Are you kidding me? Worst loss in Tech history. 21 points is a beat down by a program that nobody has ever heard of. What a disgrace to the ACC and all Tech fans.
