A few notes that went unused in the notebook posted online.
1. Quarterback and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon said B-back Broderick Snoddy is getting closer to being able to play, but has to keep working on his blocking.
“He’s made some improvements, but that’s an area that’s still a little bit of a concern for us,” he said.
Bohannon was encouraged by Snoddy’s improved work rate in practice in recent weeks.
Said Bohannon, “We’ve got to keep working, see if we can get him out there.”
As for quarterback Vad Lee?
“I think we’d like to get him in the game (Saturday),” he said. “Every time he’s gone in, he’s done some good things. So we’ll just kind of have to see how the game goes and, obviously, that’s something you’d like to do.”
2. Rather remarkably, A-back Orwin Smith said he didn’t receive any nasty posts on his Twitter or Facebook accounts after his safety in Saturday’s game. Kind of unfortunate that this is actually unusual, but so it is.
“If anything, it was, You guys stay strong,” Smith said. “One guy actually messaged me and said, ‘You guys stay positive and stay strong because my third-graders look up to you guys.’ I thought that was real nice.”
Smith hasn’t relinquished hope that Georgia Tech can still win the conference. It is a longshot for Georgia Tech to win the Coastal Division and play for the ACC title – Virginia Tech and Miami would both have to lose three games – but Smith hasn’t given up hope.
“You never know, because one thing about the ACC, there’s always something surprising happening,” he said. “You have a team like Maryland beat Clemson just randomly. … You just have to keep going hard because you never know when that team on top can take a loss.”
3. Center Jay Finch has maintained his weight, which was a struggle last season as the season wore on. He was 284 or 285 pounds Tuesday before practice. He is trying to eat square meals “all day, every day.”
“Just eat what I can see and see what I eat,” Finch said. “Just shove it in.”
Tuesday, Finch had eggs and bacon for breakfast and a turkey burger and a sub sandwich with a Powerade and chips for lunch.
More Finch trivia – he met Waffle House president and COO Walt Ehmer (a Tech grad) at an on-campus speaking engagement Tuesday (Ehmer’s, not Finch’s). Ehmer asked if there were any football players in attendance. When Finch raised his hand, Ehmer commiserated with him over the Miami loss.
“He was like, Hey, come talk to me when you graduate, which was cool,” Finch said.

Perkins got those 3 carries against Presbyterian. He played against Virginia, granted he had no carries. The article that mentioned him hurt was released after the Virginia game.

Maybe this is why we thrashed UVA so bad. If my memory serves me right, Thuga was #1 in ‘08. They’ve slipped a bit, but still in the top 10. I can’t believe Vandy is right behind them.

ibidGT, I have to respectfully disagree. Perkins got his 3 carries in the VT game and hasn’t played since. Laskey started the Pres. game and was hurt in the first half and didn’t play the second. Laskey also started and played primarily at B-back in the UVA and UM games.

@ ibidGT…..I don’t know when Perkins’ injury was incurred. Perhaps he was already injured when he came in against UVA but didn’t have any carries because he was testing out the injury. I don’t know. However, I do know that he never looked particularly good last year, so hopefully it will be good for him to sit out the year. Maybe he will come back better. We shall see.

Maybe I am Tevin’s daddy.
I can tell u this.
If I was a starting QB, I would sure prefer to have someone like Morgan and Burnett on the defense than the group that gave up 600 yards to the Canes.
Yall must have read my Wake commentary.
Nesbit failed on 4th down with the ACCCG on the line and Morgan saved the team with a sack.
I’m just guessing but Tevin would love to have someone like that on our D.
I’ve thought he played good enough in all three losses to be the hero.
I hate for any young man to have a drive that ends with a lead and less than a minute left and not get to be the hero.
Not only does he not get to be the hero.
Half of u guys pore over his every move looking for a flaw.

If y’all say so I guess. I guess the videos just didn’t show me the correct plays. Snap from center…1 step back…turn 90^ &1 step left or right & spin 180^….head toward sideline to handoff, pitch, keep or dropback & pass….or spin 180^ from center & run away from LOS & fake or make handoff or dropback, turn & pass….or turn towards sideline to handoff, pitch, or keep or dropback & pass….that sound about right????BTW….My hs coach might have been ahead of his times….running an inverted Y (upside down wishbone)….not really a T formation but close….incorporated into the Houston Veer (his term) several years before Daryl Royal & his OC Emory Bellard (designer/inventer) started using the Texas Wishbone….he never got any credit from Royal or Bellard….very prolific offense….beat all but 2 teams by 30 points or more….more than 60 points in 2 or 3 games….even the subs scored in all but 2 games

Correction on my previous comment Re: Perkins. He actually had 4 carries in the 2nd half of the Pres. game after Laskey was hurt, but hasn’t had any carries since. PJ has stated he has some sort of upper body injury which leads me to believe he either broke or dislocated his shoulder resulting in the long recovery.

Nesbitt would have a Wake defeat most likely without Morgan and no ACCCG victory because we would have finished 2nd.
Then we could pore over that 4th down failure and find someone open and beat to death about it.

14 GT, I’m not sure what you are or aren’t seeing, but in most, if not all, of the option plays, TW spins 270* from center to run the option.
You say yourself, “&1 step left or right & spin 180^”. So just think about it, 1 step left or right = 90* + “spin 180*”= 270*. Not sure if you’re a GT grad, but if you are maybe that’ll make more sense.
You definitley have some knowledge of the veer, my knowledge doesn’t go back to the 60’s as I wasn’t around then, but to the late 70’s and 80’s and we were definitley using this design then. Maybe the mis-direction spin wasn’t put in until later, IDK. You’re coach sounds like he had some good ideas.

In the base 3-4 defense as run by Tech, sacks by the NT and DEs are not that common. The prototypically very big and very strong NT (Barnes at 350 for Tech) and the big (prototypically 290-300 lb) DEs have primary responsibilities to take on their block *and* cover the gaps to each side of them. Pass rush is pretty much all about the linebackers, and CB/ safety in a blitz. Having said that, those 3 D-linemen must be able to hold ground and should generate a push into the backfield. They have to keep blockers off the primary playmakers, the inside linebackers.
A base 4-3 defense is completely different. The 300-lb DTs are expected to get penetration, and the 250 to 275-lb DEs are the primary pass rushers. The middle LB is expected to provide strong run support on the inside. In variations, you will see LB and safety blitzes and occasionally a DE dropping into coverage.
This is of course a simplification of pretty complex stuff.

Burdell….I watched 1/3 of the video link you posted….In none of those plays did Tevin do what I saw Sat….Read my post before this one & read it carefully & get back to me….snap from center….1 step back….1 step to left or right….stop & spin 180^….go in the completely opposite way that he started from the center….no fake handoff….no handoff….just running towards the sideline eventually making a handoff, pitching or keeping….your video link showed nothing like what I am describing in as much detail as I can….I am not trying to stir up a disagreement or such….I know what I saw….it can’t be a designed play….Counting your link, I have watched about 2 dozen plays & none of them shows what I have tried to get across to y’all.

14 GT, Ok, well maybe you’re not seeing what you say in a play in the UM game, but the pull from center and turning of the opposite direction the play is going and then continuing to turn, resulting in a 270* rotation, is exactly how the option is designed to run. I’m thinking you probably saw a busted play and TW was trying to compensate. I’ve seen this plenty of times when someone goes the wrong way or misses an assignment. BTW, I don’t think you’re trying to stir something up here like many try to do, we’re just having an insightful convo on how the QB moves in this offense.

I know others have mentioned this, but if Orwin were disciplined and followed the explicit instructions from his HC then he would have no need to check any of his Social Media outlets.
I thought the “elite academics” of GT filtered in only the most disciplined of FB Players that never make MENTAL MISTAKES on Game-Day?
If Orwin is so Elite and such a “playmaker”, why don’t we get him the ball more than 5-7 times per game?
Duke Johnson is T-Fr. at Miami but they can figure out a way to get the ball at least a dozen times per game.
I thought CPJ was an Offensive Genius, shouldn’t he find a way to get his best players the ball as much as possible?

I thought for a long time that it was awesome that CPJ had his offense in his head with no notes. Now I think that he can’t produce a more productive offense. He reminds me of a local HS coach who would stubbornly run all night into a 9-man front. The pass was open, but his team wasn’t prepared to execute it.It probably cost him multiple state titles.CPJ is leaving many big-time wins on the table because he is stubborn.

Could be Burdell, could be. Just didn’t look right to me from upper east stands 45 yd line. TW might have seen something from up close that we couldn’t see. It just made me wonder if he was confused or what. Re my hs school coach. I never thought about it much, but I guess he was kinds innovative with his offense. I know that we had 4 first team backs (QB, LHB, RHB. & FB) with over 1000yds rushing & 2 with over 2000 yds rushing LHB & QB (also had over 2000 yds passing). 9 senior offensive starters got scholarships & the other 2 were juniors. Harry Mehre with the Atl Journal called us the #1 HS team in the nation-b/4 there was one. I pulled mop up duty as a soph.

It would have been nice if we had gotten Tuitt. He has 6 sacks for ND this year. However, Tuitt plays in a 4-3 defense.
I’m no football expert, but typically, the LBs get most of the sacks in the 3-4, so I don’t think the comparison from Morgan to TJ and IC is quite fair. Also, Morgan was a very good 4-3 DE, which is why he was drafted in the first round. But to your point, TJ is in the most important position on the defense, and, while he has worked hard to improve his strength and conditioning, he isn’t getting it done.
________________
I think ND runs a 3-4 and Tuitt plays DE and at 6-6 and 295+ to 300lbs. he is looking like a can’t miss first rounder as soon as he’s eligible (after his Jr. yr.).
Too bad CPJ could close the deal on Tuitt, but then again according to the CPJ apologists any & all Recruits that spurn CPJ for a better program are really “just scared of GT’s Elite Academics”.

I still disagree. I understand we are only four games into the season. I also understand the likelihood of Miami AND VT both losing three or more conference games, and we would have to win out. Not happening. Give me a crappy year this year and a good year next year, and I’ll be thrilled. Heck, I’m even ok with letting Tevin play til he loses another conference game, but that is going to happen soon, and then the season really is over. I just don’t see the point in not doing everything we can to have a good season eventually.

Please STOP with the Urban Myths of how hard the Academics are for GT FB players.
No one was mentioning the Academics when GT surged ahead of Miami with 36 straight point. so WHY play the Academics Card after you get your @$$ handed to you?
The TRUTH about the Academics for GT FB players is this:
Most of our players major in BS in BUSINESS ADMIN:
The math Reqs. are SURVEY of Calculus that is not accepted for credit by the Engineering Majors & Science Majors, and Finite Math which is also NOT accepted for Credit by the Engr. & Science Majors.
If it is NOT accepted for Credit by Engineering Majors & Science Majors then is it really “Calculus”?
The Science Requirement that our FB use is NOT CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY or PHYSICS, instead, our FB players fulfill their Science Requirement by taking EARTH & ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE( i.e. Earth Science).
Basically the Business Admin Program at GT is very much in line with the typical Business Admin Program at most large State, Flagship-type Universities.
Gone are the days where our players Major in Industrial Mgmt. and take the same Calculus as Engineering majors and then take the same Biology or Chemistry as Engineering Majors, those days ended after Curry stopped coaching at GT, over 20 years ago.
Here’s the PROOF:

It looks like the GT fan base has returned to their normal form. Not as much negativism and calling for the coaches to be fired. Good job Techies. A couple of days away from an OT loss heals some of the sting.
I love to hate GT in a good old fashioned way. But, it is hard to feel the hate when the Tech base is so negative and saying they will lose every game. I actually feel sorry for the players and something is lost in the series. So come on Tech…get some quality wins and let’s get back to some good old fashioned hate. I’ll repeat this over and over on these blogs……… It’s the defense stupid. Tech can be 3-0 by simply stopping decent opponents from scoring on last minute drives. I’ll also suggest that we do not have enough stud defensive players to consistently win. I really believe our offensive scheme will prevent us from recruiting the stub defensive players. The stud defensive player will not develop practicing against our offense.
