Tech rebounding after Miami loss
Notes from Tuesday.
1. There have been no dramatic pep talks, but Georgia Tech seems to be rebounding from its crushing overtime loss to Miami on Saturday.
“Guys aren’t really moping on the loss,” A-back Orwin Smith said following Tuesday’s practice. They had been down “kind of right after the game and maybe a little bit Sunday, but I’m not even hearing much about it [Tuesday].”
Quarterback and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon said he and his players talked for about 15 minutes in a meeting about how to respond to the adversity of the loss, which followed an overtime loss in the season opener to Virginia Tech. Bohannon said he reviewed the Miami game video several times Sunday and Monday but is ready to move forward. Quarterback Tevin Washington has a similar mindset.
“He’s a pretty resilient kid,” Bohannon said. “He’s tough as nails.”
Smith said that the Yellow Jackets had an energetic, productive practice Tuesday as they prepare for Middle Tennessee State on Saturday. Center Jay Finch said he made a point of “trying to fly around” to keep the energy up.
One team goal for the season, to go undefeated at home, is out the window. The top one, to win the ACC, is a longshot with two division losses. Others, such as beating Georgia, remain attainable. At his Tuesday news conference, coach Paul Johnson wanted his team focused only on one goal – beating Middle Tennessee State.
“We talked a lot about how dealing with adversity and how you respond to it, how you react to it, it helps to define you,” Johnson said. “I think they’ll come back and play on Saturday. I’d be disappointed if we didn’t.”
2. Cornerback Louis Young (upper-body injury) and offensive lineman Will Jackson (leg) did not practice Tuesday, although Johnson said Monday that he expected both to play Saturday. Johnson did say Tuesday that true freshman cornerback D.J. White will play Saturday for the first time since “we’ve got some injuries and we need him back in the secondary.”
Johnson also said that Jamal Golden will probably see more time at punt returner after two returns for 84 yards against Miami and that true freshman wide receiver Anthony Autry will see more playing time.
“He’s starting to make some really good improvements and some guys didn’t play as well,” wide receivers coach Buzz Preston said of Autry.
B-back Zach Laskey figures to get most of the snaps at that position, as David Sims is still recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his shin. Sims played about 15 snaps against Miami. Broderick Snoddy is improving as a blocker, but still needs more work.
“It’s hard to sub the fullbacks in and out based on one can block, one can run,” Bohannon said.
3. Wide receiver Chris Jackson has completed a four-game suspension for not meeting NCAA credit-hour requirement rules. Jackson said he needed to have taken another class towards his major over the summer, but the shortage was not discovered until preseason camp. Tech appealed to the NCAA to no avail.
Through the first four games, Jackson has been working with the second-string offense. He’ll play special teams and could be in the rotation at wide receiver.
“Being my senior year, they’ve always said everything’s going to come fast an those four games went by fast,” he said. “So hopefully, the next eight games go by slow for me.”
4. The team voted for captains Monday. Guard Omoregie Uzzi was named offensive captain, defensive end Izaan Cross was named defensive captain and Washington was chosen overall captain. … For Saturday’s broadcast, Mike Hogewood (play by play), former Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner (analyst) and Elizabeth Moreau (sideline) will call the game for regional sports networks, including Fox Sports South in the Atlanta market. … The ticket market for the game is not scalding. On the ticket re-sale website Stubhub Tuesday evening, almost 50 tickets were available for less than $10 and as low as $3.99.

Team needs depth on the D Line, Beef on the Oline, better QB… and better safety play (Isiah Johnson is horrid)
An offensive philosophy change in how the game is managed in the second half particularly the 4th quarter. An increase in passing especially to recievers just opening up the offense in general.

I want to apologize for the negative things I posted after last Saturday. I was mad, disappointed, frustrated & anything else you want call it. If any team members read any of it, I hope they just laughed at an old fool. I probably should not have gone to the game. I am still dealing with a personal loss, and then the game added to my bad feelings. When the game was going our way, my spirits were lifted real high, and then I came crashing down. Anyway, I am mostly back to being my cranky ole poot ways. GT is my horse, if they never win another race. I don’t much care for a noon KO. I am used to getting out of bed when I wake up. Not when a damn alarm clock goes off. I expect GT will right the ship & play the best game possible. I have full confidence the coaches will have the best team on the field that gives us the best chance of winning. GOOOOO JACKETS THWGeorgie

BTW….I have read that this must be GT’s month for grieving. I know of a couple more guys that have suffered a personal loss as well. My sincerest condolences to them, along with prayers. Thanks!!

For a school that prides itself on being the “smartest guys in the room”, ish like this should never happen, I wasn’t an Athlete at GT, but once a year I could go by the College of Mgmt. (at the time) and see what credits I had and what credits I needed to finish my Degree, even regular student have “status sheets” that show their progress towards their Degree.
The fact that this has happened at GT after flunk-gate and the Carole Moore situation shows how bush league GT is when it comes to big time Athletics.
If we’re gonna lose players for 4 games let’s make it count like the guys in Athens do and commit some crimes or fail some drug tests, we lose a guy for 4 games because a d@mn paper-shuffling admin can’t count which classes are needed by our players.

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but Jamea Thomas (#14) looks to be a pretty good cornerback and was a big part of the 36 unanswered points.
His pick was textbook corner play.
Stay with your man, look back and find the ball and then either knock it away or if positioned well enough, go for the pick.
He got the pick against both Miami and Clemson and has 2 and 2/3 years left.
Against NC State and Russell Wilson, the approach of the whole secondary seems to just be stay with your man and make the tackle after the catch.
The fans in the upper deck East were pretty fed up with that by game’s end.
If State needed 17 yards on third down, the receiver ran down the field 18 yards and made the catch. Only a pick 6 by Tarrant prevented a blow-out loss.
I thought State was nuts to let him go to Wisconsin.
Anyway can we teach the looking back approach to all our DBs.
We might as well go for picks if we are going to give the other side all day to pick us apart.

Tech would have lost to Wake in 2009 had not Morgam Thomas sacked their QB to push Wake out of game-winning FG range.
Unfortunately he graduated and no one comes close to his level of play since then.
Prior to Wake’s last drive in regulation in that game (and they had many), Tech went for it on 4th down rather than punt or try a long FG. Nesbit, less u forget, was thrown for a loss and the tone in the stadium suddenly changed.
Yes our championship season was in jeopardy to Wake Forest.
A late drive and a FG and we are beat.
But Thomas saved us and we won in OT.
So would we not be saying a lot of the same good things about Washington as we do about Nesbitt if he had someone like Thomas on the team.
Let’s review.
Nesbitt failed on 4th down and Tech would have lost to Wake in regulation if not for the defense (which consisted of Thomas and Burnett and apparently a lot of 2 stars).
Had Thomas not been at Tech, I, had I felt like it, could have come on the blog and blasted Nesbitt’s lack of clutch play with the season on the line.
So I ask you, is it Tevin’s fault that Tech did not find a replacement for Thomas so on the occasion when the other team’s D steps up (as Wake’s did that night), our D cannot do the same?
Perhaps Tevin should spend his free time making recruitment trips since the people we pay to do that must not be so great at it.

The DE who saved us vs Wake was Derrick Morgan, not Morgan Thomas.
Anyway he covered Nesbitt’s failing on 4th down that night with the ACC championship on the line and that can sure help a QB’s rep.
So Nesbitt failed some times too.
He just had a D that would step up when the other team’s D stepped up late in the game.
It’s lack of D that has lost the 3 OT games.
Give a team an extra chance to beat u after u have already whipped them, you’ll lose those games because they have taken the momentum.

BTW all three losses were Paul Johnson’s fault, not just the latest.
He failed to recruit someone to replace Derrick Morgan for those times when like in 2009, even the great Nesbitt failed.
I guess had we lost that game, then all of our experts would have looked to find who was wide open on that 4th down play where he was sacked.
Then I could have said, if Nesbitt would just keep his cool back there then he would have a) spotted the wide open receiver or B) spotted the reciever who had a step on the DB.
Or maybe I could blame Nesbitt for not running over the five Wake players who went unblocked on the play.
Without Derrick Morgan, no ACCCG that we won.
Wake beats us instead.
No D then no victory that night.

Last Saturday was tough, no doubt about it. I wish we were playing another ACC opponent this week as well – if we beat the pants off MTSU, it will make no difference to those who have claimed the season is lost already. Of course, if we lose or even win close, the sky WILL be falling (and I will have my air-raid helmet on like everyone else).
Here’s hoping the defense has a good game, and we get enough of a lead to give Vad some significant playing time. I’m not in the camp with those who think Vad is the football team’s savior – but what I HEAR about his talent excites me. I want to believe.
I’ll be pulling Saturday. GO JACKETS!!!!!

One other thing. I’ve read recently on the blogs that some think CPJ is sticking with TW out of “loyalty” or because he doesn’t want to hurt TW’s feelings. I can’t believe anyone who’s observed CPJ at all over the last 5 years would think this. The man would bench his mother if he thought it was better for the team.
That said, I do find some validity to the argument that CPJ stays with TW because he can run the TO part of the offense most effectively, and is giving that precedence over putting the best overall offense (and playmakers) on the field – allowing more variation from his preferred scheme. That’s an indication of stubbornness that I can at acknowledge would not seem totally out of character, and to some degree a reflex attitude. If that is true (and who can know for sure), I sure hope the Old Dog (or Jacket, as it were) can learn some new tricks before the season is out.

I wish our OL guys would fly around in the fourth quarter of games that are up for grabs.(UTAH,VT,UM)—MIAMI just wanted the game more.That is a sad commentary when GT is playing at home ,and trying to build attendance.W E SHOULD NEVER LOSE AT HOME.—-How many times will CPJ put TW in a position to fail?I feel sorry for TW because he is a great overall person.But he can’t handle the fourth quarter in big games.

OK smart-ICE, please explain to the rest of us here how or WHY something like that should happen 10yrs AFTER we had flunk-gate that was another series of screw-ups by Admin-types that caused multiple Athletes in multiple sports to have eligibility issues.

Read some of my longwinded tripe.
Derrick Morgan (I had the wrong name) saved GT’s, Paul Johnson’s and Josh Nesbitt’s rears with a sack of Wake Forest pushing them out of range for what would have been the winning FG.
Without defense, the great Nesbitt’s 4th down failure would have been looked at.
And guess what?
Someone would have been open or about to get open and then what happens to Nesbitt’s rep.
He could have been said to choke (by internet “expert” logic) for not producing with the ACCCG on the line.
How about that Wake’s defense from watching us for 4 quarters finally stepped up?
And then we countered with our D stepping up too to win the game.
Our D has not stepped up in any of the three losses.
We were told to be patient and give Groh three years.
Time’s up.
Get on Groh and CPJ for hiring him and not recruiting another Derrick Morgan as well.

Players are required per the NCAA to take 30 credit hours a year. Jackson transferred here from Alabama, and there was some confusion over a credit that was supposed to transfer that didn’t. Get over it, some people make mistakes. I for one am looking forward to him getting on the field and contributing in his final 8 games.

I am a Tevin fan.
If u r going to knock him, then I am going to search my memory banks for things like the nearly lost Wake game.
A 4th down failure by Nesbitt and then the D stepping up to win.
The D did not step up in any of the three OT losses to win in regulation.
And I have a basis I will readily admit against all coaches getting paid millions for nothing after being fired.
This is an insane arrangement that exists between colleges and coaches.
The pros have a tampering rule.
Why doesn’t the college game have that?
If the coaches can tear up contracts, the AD should be able to as well.
So Al Groh was on the hot seat from day one as far as I was concerned but I held my fire.
No long term contract so he really is on the hot seat now.

It should have been caught by the Admin-types a long time ago since CJ is a RS-Sr. and has been at GT for 3+ or 4+ yrs, I’m not sure which.
Also, if there were any question as to what is the correct answer, then the Admins in the GTAA should err on the side of caution and have CJ take whatever the ONE CLASS he needed over again and if he didn’t need it, then chalk it up as “insurance”, that way you don’t lose a member of your 2-deep for 4 Games when it is easily avoidable.
For a school that brags to the free world how smart we are, the GTAA sure does do a lot of dumb-@$$ things!

The team elected Tevin Washington the Captain. He obviously is the team leader, a senior, knows the offense overall and is “tough as nails.” That is good enough for me as a fan. Tevin deserves to play, but I also think as Tech looks toward the future that some time has to be set aside to work Vad in too. Go Jackets! Now folks, let’s get ourselves to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.

This is the difference between wannabes like GT and serious contenders like Bama, with Nicky Satan everything is about “The Process” and continuously perfecting “The Process”.
At Bama under Satan they don’t gloss-over errors and mistakes like you did above, that’s one reason WHY he gets so much out of their talent, everything they do is about everyone associated with their program striving to be PERFECT in their individual tasks and it all adds up to them getting more out their highly ranked Recruiting Classes than other schools.
Of course over-signing helps also, but hey I was on a roll!
Oh I almost forgot, hey you, Miami passed 52 times and was not sacked one time, do you still think our DL is NOT under-sized?

Agree with Tech Fan Since 1950,
Despite the mistakes in OT, TW is playing well I think. Vad is oviously the future, but I have not seen anything from him at this point to replace TW.
TW ovioulsy has leadership and respect of his team mates, he is throwing better, +60%, and oviously runs the option better.
I will take Vad on broken plays.

Just watched the replay of the Miami game on ESPN. It is time for CPJ to go. Just terrible against a very average Miami team. On top of that, our one ACC win was against a terrible Virginia team and our loss to VT looks even worse now that VT has shown just to be a terrible team with their humiliation against a terrible Pitt team. Our conference is just terrible right now except FSU and Clemson and we don’t have a coach who can take advantage of this.

@ SansWorld, how do we know Vad can’t run the offense any better? We’ve only seen him play a couple of quarters against Presbyterian and UVA, and he looked pretty darn good. I’ve seen plenty of TW and it’s pretty obvious what he can and can’t do. He has yet to lead the team to a win in a tight game or a win against UGA, VT or Miami. Do I really need to keep seeing the same thing?
The defense and Al Groh is a similar issue. I have now seen 2 full seasons & 4 games of AG’s coaching. We have NEVER gotten pressure on the QB and continually give up 3rd & longs. As soon as we hired AG a UVA alum buddy of mine said “you will come to hate him just like we do”. I’m there.

What specific aspect of the game is Tevin failing at this year, other than two bad decisions in OT?
His passing is much improved; he has one of the highest QB ratings in the conference. He seems to be making the right decisions on the option, he has had break away runs, he has the confidence of team mates.
Vad has had some nice runs on broken plays, I am not sure I have seen much evidence of right decision making with the option. He has thrown a few very short passes effectively. I am not saying he does not deserve some more reps, but I have not seen anything to suggest he is the solution to this team’s ills. Certainly I have not seen the accolades that people are giving him on this board. I do agree that this is an unknown quantity at this point.

Sans, TW is a great kid, and an adequate QB. I just know what I’ve seen in 2 years worth of games. He doesn’t always make the right read on the option. His fall back is always to keep the ball and if he was gaining 5-6 yds a carry that might be OK. But he’s not. He is not a good passer, not natural with it. He’s gotten better (and I admit he is better than Nesbit was) but he just isn’t comfortable in the pocket and tends to put his head down and run away whenever pressure comes. He does enough good things to win against inferior competition and to at lease sometimes be competitive against better competition, but he is 11-10 overall and has never won a tight game or beaten anyone of significance other than Clemons. Granted, our D could have stepped up and made a play to win the games, but they have not and TW has had the opportunity to win the game at the end but has come up empty.
I’m really just looking for a reason to be intrigued enough to keep going to the games. I pretty much know what I’m getting with TW.
Now, if someone will guarantee me that the next time our D plays a soft zone and the other team goes 80-90 yards in the last 2 minutes to tie or win the game, that CPJ will punch AG in the face as they are walking off the field, I will be in my seats watching.

I have to agree with “Same Old”. As long as DR and his ilk see the money coming in they are not going to do anything about the trajectory of this football program. Why should they? The only reason we had a change in the basketball coach was because NO ONE WAS SHOWING UP FOR THE GAMES!!! What is we go 8 and 4 or 7 and 5. So what, we are now at the point that our program does not matter. Irrelevant! We took ourselves out of any meaning mix by the fourth game. Sad but true. Look, and you can take this to the bank, when we get spanked by Georgia again, this will or should be over for the Johnson regime.

Never criticize the brain trust of the Georgia Tech Athletic Office. Never demean the direction of the program and never chastise the coaching staff. white helmets = stronger showing this season; gold helmets = one strong showing, and one blowout to Miami last week, a much worse OT loss than to VT if Tech blows 19 pt lead against Miami, which they did not do against VT; so the white helmets win over the gold, ha ha ha, welcome to the early 70’s

It’s really not so much that the Miami game was a tragic demonstration of poor play, it’s that it’s becoming so predictable. Excuse me if I don’t get so fired up by beating a Sun Belt team. When you’re watching a game where in the 3rd quarter you can say: “My lord, we’re going to lose this game”. It gets old. We don’t beat people late. We just don’t When we can do that, I’ll get interested again. The last 3 OT games should never have been in OT. No heart. Not by the players, not by the coaches. The 20 year malaise continues.
