Paul Johnson, fount of hope?

A few quick notes from the Paul Johnson news conference before going out to talk to players and coaches post-practice:

1. Johnson commented on Middle Tennessee State that the Blue Raiders have won two in a row (Florida Atlantic and Memphis) and have scored a lot of points. They play out of a spread on offense and have a returning starter at quarterback (Logan Kilgore). Defensively, MTSU has a new coordinator (Tyrone Nix).

“Our goal is to come back and try to have a great week of practice and come back and play well on Saturday,” he said.

2. On the secondary: “I think that before Saturday, they played fairly well. Saturday was not a great day for anybody. It’s like anything else. When you’re playing coverage back there and you’re matched up and there’s not a lot of pressure, there’s going to be some exposure. I think you have to give the other team some credit. They have pretty good receivers and their quarterback was hot and they made some plays.”

3. Jamal Golden will see more time at punt return after a strong game there against Miami.

4. No lineup changes due to performance from last week. There may be a couple injury-related changes. It’s conceivable cornerback Louis Young may not play. Johnson said that he’ll take the redshirt off of cornerback D.J. White as “we’ve got some injuries and we need him back in the secondary.”

Johnson said that wide receiver Anthony Autry will play more. The other true freshmen besides White, Autry, Adam Gotsis and Ryan Rodwell will likely be redshirted.

Johnson: “We’re trying to do our best to redshirt most of hat class and not waste a year for them to be mop-up guys.”

5. He’s not quite ready to concede anything.

“I don’t think anybody knows about (the possibility of achieving or not achieving) any goals four games into the season. We’ve got teams in our league that haven’t played a conference game. (Yet) we’re already anointing conference champions. You have to play it and see what happens.”

“We’ve still got a ton to play for. We’ve played one-third of our season. Last year was a great example. We got off to a great start and didn’t finish well. This year, we get off to a mediocre start. Maybe we have a great finish.”

“Call me an optimist. I don’t think anybody’s ever considered me a real optimist about things, but I guess I see it a little differently.”

Start playing Adam Gotsis coach. Your current D line made up of Seniors/Juniors leave this or next year. There is not much room for improvement to make. And they suck, not one single ounce of pressure produced by them. Give the kid a shot, he can’t possibly do any worse than the current starters.

Johnson needed to change his tone. You can only beat your guys down so much. At some point, he needed to start to build them up.

This doesn’t change my opinion on the defense, but it’s nice to see him continuing to show that he does evolve even if many think he doesn’t.

Personally, I think if we beat Clemson or win our bowl game, and get our younger players ready for next season then I will be fine with the season. 9-3 was was my prediction from the beginning. If we slip to 8-4 its not a big deal. 7-5 would be pretty ugly though.

…that article to which you refer says that Tech is the # 1 university when it comes to current salary vs. what you paid for tuition – and we all know that engineers make a heck of a lot more than business, journalism, and education majors. But, UGA came in fourth in that same article, so that ain’t too bad for a “football” school.

And, regarding beating UGA this year, wasn’t it just last week that most on here were saying the same thing about Tech v Miami, that UM had no shot – THAT, is why they play the game…

We are 2 & 2. Win the rest of the games and we are 10 & 2 and destined for a pretty good bowl no matter what. Losing two games in overtime is no shame, but admittedly it is a terrific disappointment especially since they were Coastal games. It may not be the best conference in America, but the ACC is definitely the most competitive top to bottom and anything can happen. Finish well in 2012, but 2013 is the year of the Jackets (mark it down now folks). Nothing wrong with our offense except a few more passes. I’m getting pretty tired of the critics of the offense. Criticize all you want about the defense though for there is certainly room for improvement. The answer there though is bigger and stronger defensive linemen and a pass rush. Stay tuned!

Predicted 8 & 4, think that is still achievable but the Clemson game will be tough. I can’t remember 2 more devastating losses this early in the season. But those losses may not look so bad later in the season. If you noticed, the team that routed UM- K State, also went into Norman and soundly defeated Oklahoma. VT also just routed a Bowling Green team that came within a play or two of beating UF in Gainesville. Still can be a good season if CPJ can keep the morale up – we’ll see what happens

8-4 is looking pretty good at this point. CPJ is starting to wear just a little thin, even with some of the more loyal Tech supporters. No rational person is calling for his head, but with continued losses to UGA and bowl opponents, his seat will be getting a bit warm next year. The team is young, and if Lee can get some more reps and prove if he’s as good as hyped, then next year will come with high expectations.

Full Metal Jacket

Either Miami’s backs were wearing olive-oil uniforms or the Tech defense has forgotten how to wrap up and take down a ball carrier. Our secondary and pass rush were especially disappointing. CPJ rightfully assumed some blame for play-calling and preparation. Now it’s time to dominate MTSU, who we shouldn’t even be playing, and then man up for Clemson in Death Valley.

Reality check: Virginia Tech is not going to lose 3 games in the conference this season. We’ve lost 2, including 1 to VT, and we’re not going to win the Coastal or the Conference this year. New goals: win out, especially over UGA and bowl opponent. Then, WTNY.

September 25th, 2012

I agree that we have to make improvements this year in the here and now, but since everyone knows that the pre-season primary goals were to win the division and the conference, it is only logical to think of those goals in terms of next year. I will be at every home game and several away games the rest of the season and cheering loud as ever. I am confident we can still win 8 or 9 this year and that is not too bad. But in terms of championships, we’re already one-third of the way through the schedule and we’re already in a deep hole.

Life is too short to base happiness on the actions of a bunch of kids playing a game. Go Jackets! I’ll cheer for you when you play and commend you when you win, but I won’t cry for you when you lose. Think Clemson will be tough – at least my son will be at the game so I don’t have to watch with him on TV! If we lose to CU and one other before UGA, I think you will see Vad starting against Duke and playing against UGA.

CPJ knows that if things go south, that he will need to get Vad some more experience and give the Tech fan base a reason for optimism. Not that Teven didn’t play fairly well , but Vad may very well have completed some of those passes and also broken a few long runs. While we need to work on the defensive problems, keeping the other team’s offense off the field goes a long way to help a suspect defense.

Switching out a veteran senior for a redshirt freshman is probably the hardest decision for a coach – it’s not just skills but also leadership issues and is also more difficult since Tevin has worked very hard, been a model student and athlete. He has also improved his passing technique. Then there is the whole team issue – when you have a guy who has Tevin’s character as a senior, replacing him out of hand doesn’t always send the right signals to the players. But in the end you have to get the best players on the field to win. My two cents worth.

And maybe I should stay off the blogs like I did last week.
I do not like those knocking Tevin.
We put the brakes on Orwin when how many kickoffs have been returned for TDs from one yard or deeper in the endzone. You should want Orwin to have as many touches as possible.
And I think CPJ put the brakes on Tevin.

Sorry to hear of your loss JD. I’m sure this latest OT loss didn’t help. Hopefully we cruise this weekend and that may lift all of our spirits.

But I’m not convinced we will cruise this week. MTSU was idle last week and as someone said above they are playing pretty well. The big question is whether we go into a funk or do we recover from this latest setback. Ken, is CPJ really upbeat at this point? or is it just what he wants to portray? I for one am really concerned. I thought for sure after performance in the VT game that we were not mediocre. But even a good team can only handle so much. These were two extremely emotional losses. I’m not at the games (unfortunately) so I can’t see what’s happening on the sidelines. But one concern I’ve had (not just this year) is whether there is any real player leadership on this team, especially offensively. It seems to me that CPJ’s nature doesn’t promote a player to step up and be a leader. Scold me if you disagree but even when Nesbitt was playing, the body language when players are around Coach looks sorta like everyone’s walking on egg shells. I can appreciate old school to an extent, but if you won’t let the players do some leading there’s only so far you can go as a team. That’s why I’d like to see Vad get a real opportunity, preferably soon, to see if the team might respond and we might find out if he’s a real leader or just another indian.

Since we are looking up at such powerhouses as La Tech and La. Monroe, why is it that we think we can beat UGA? I think Grantham has the triple option figured out, they are too fast and athletic on the edge, and too big up front on D. Murray and all those receivers will pick us apart until we drop extra bodies back into coverage, then those freshman backs will eat us up. The only reason Tech did not run up more yards and points last year was because the offense quit in the 3rd quarter, just like they did Saturday against Miami. Not saying Tech would have won last year, because I don’t think we would have, but it sure as hell would have been a lot closer if the offense hadn’t quit on us. “choke” sure didn’t show much ability to stop it in the first half.

I want to apologize for the negative things I posted after last Saturday. I was mad, disappointed, frustrated & anything else you want call it. If any team members read any of it, I hope they just laughed at an old fool. I probably should not have gone to the game. I am still dealing with a personal loss, and then the game added to my bad feelings. When the game was going our way, my spirits were lifted real high, and then I came crashing down. Anyway, I am mostly back to being my cranky ole poot ways. GT is my horse, if they never win another race. I don’t much care for a noon KO. I am used to getting out of bed when I wake up. Not when a damn alarm clock goes off. I expect GT will right the ship & play the best game possible. I have full confidence the coaches will have the best team on the field that gives us the best chance of winning. GOOOOO JACKETS THWGeorgie

Really??? We lose against VT (who lost to lowly Pitt) and lost to Miami (who got blew out by K-State). And because they were OT, it makes it ok? Where do some of you dunder-heads come from? Thing is, neither one of those games should had went to OT in the first place. Now, some of you are rearing your heads up to talk smack about UGA?? Who, by the way, is BETTER than the first 2 forementioned teams. I may be a tech fan, but I am far from stupid. I mean really… Until CPJ mans up and fires “no show” the “D” will continue to be a joke. How many more games should “no show” lose and then blame it on the players??? I guess, his great play calling and defensive schemes are just too complexed for everyone (in his eyes)… Plain truth?? He doesn’t know anything about defense… Just becuase he can play Madden, doesn’t mean he’s a good coach.

I am sticking with my pre-season prediction of 7-5, with BAD beatings from UGA & Clemson. Also, as soon as we lose one more game (which will be next week, against the Tigers), we should go ahead and turn the offense over to Vad…he’s the QB of the future, might as well help him start getting ready for the next 2-3 seasons when it will be his team.

The good: VT is always tough at home and we took them to OT. Admittedly we blew the last minute of regulation and the OT period but at least we hung with them in the 1st game of the year.
The bad: We already have 2 conference losses.
The ugly: We gave up 600+ yards to UM and Groh is not the answer as a Def. Coord.
Agree with CPJ that strange things happen in conference play…….but GT is going have coach and play much better if there’s going to be any hope of a better than 7-5 record.

Like Bob said, if Lee is not so good, does not look like a really bright future. That would indicate a shirted freshman next year (obviously with zero experience….not good.)

CPJ kills me about the other team having a hot QB ,and making more plays than we did.His defenders don’t have enough intensity or coaching to put the opposing QB on the ground. No QB can operate on his backside.Defense is intensity and passion and getting off blocks. We are slow and we can’t tackle. Some of our guys have been coached four yrs.and still can’t make plays. We giftwrapped wins for UTAH,VT,AND UM.I wonder what kind of meltdown CAG has planned for MTSU.He and CPJ clearly get outcoached in big games.

You can be stuck in the “conventional wisdom” if you want. CPJ has, on average, recruited just about as well as Ross, O’Leary, and Gailey. So I’m not sure what you base your analysis of our recruiting on. If you are expecting top 20 recruiting classes at GT, then you will be sorely disappointed no matter who is coach.

Even when O’Leary was able to get more special admits in (which resulted in poor graduation rates and an end to the practice), he STILL didn’t get top 20 classes.

Just watched the replay of the Miami game on ESPN. It is time for CPJ to go. Just terrible against a very average Miami team. On top of that, our one ACC win was against a terrible Virginia team and our loss to VT looks even worse now that VT has shown just to be a terrible team with their humiliation against a terrible Pitt team. Our conference is just terrible right now except FSU and Clemson and we don’t have a coach who can take advantage of this.

If your record is terrible against top competition, the thrill is gone.
And there is nothing that says we have to waste our time and money on anything that leaves us in a bad mood.
Concerning recruiting, we have had one great year out of ten.
That year produced Nesbitt (undrafted), Morgan (1st round), Thomas (1st round), Burnett (3rd round) and Dwyer (5th round but should have gone higher).
When has Tech ever produced two 1st rounders?
And in spite of that and in a game that predicted future failures, we did not defeat Uga in 2009 because CPJ downplayed the game and got outcoached.
I do not like paying someone millions for mediocrity.
And I cannot fire them but I can do something else on Saturdays and will.

CPJ should be on the hot seat… His trust in “no show” has led him to failure. If you team scores 36 points you should win. I mean you really can’t ask the offense to score on every single they have the ball. That is what I’m pretty much hearing. The offense didn’t do enough and recruiting. I can agree with recruiting to a point. The talent level definitely favors the offense. The “D” really does not have star stand out players that I can see. Even if they were “no show”’s defensive schemes would take them out of the equation. But, the failure is on the coaches. CPJ needs to man up and just fire “no show”… There are plenty of DC’s out there. Pick one that knows how to blitz or put an 8 man front up. The “D” is the weakness of the team… If I haven’t said it enough… position…position..position.. If you are not in the area you need to be on the field the 3-4 defense fails. It takes a coach to know this. Obviously CAG doesn’t. I understand missed tackles and such. But, when players are not where they need to be or the DC doesn’t dial up a blitz on an obvious passing situation.. The fault is with the coach NOT the players. It’s a shame the coaches blame the players for the loss. Maybe the should just quit coaching and become bus drivers?? They seem to be good at throwing people under one and driving it over them.

Hey CPJ, here is a big difference. 3 games into 2012 your are already out of the ACC race. 3 games into 2012 your team’s performance is worse than last year. 3 games into 2012 your defense showed no improvement over 2011. Reality check: VaTech was overated, Miami is about what people expected which is mediocre. This Tech team is probably ranked about 50th in the nation. There are many problems with this program that I don’t see changing. 1. Horrible recruiting 2. Classless coach who always blames his players first 3. Lack of fan base reality 4. Excuses always fall on tough academics…………
Answer these questions please……What coach calls timeout at the end of a half in which the other team has the ball and is taking a knee? Why does it matter what the dawgs do each week? Do you here Notre Dame, Stanford, and other schools use the academics excuse? What other major college runs the option offense? What coach goes on forth down as much as we do? What current players do we have that will play on Sunday?

The CPJ experiment over on the flats appears to be in shambles judging from the gt fanbase infighting. With remaining home games against mts, bc, byu and duke (talk about awful scheduling) it’s gonna get pretty quiet and ugly over at the old trade school. I’d like to see cpj and his staff stick around forever, but I’ve got a feeling drad may be forced to make a self preservation move at the end of the season. I think it’s pretty obvious what cpj can bring to the table………a competitive, winning team up to a certain level, but his teams are simply not going to be able to compete with the big boys on a CONSISTENT basis. Regardless of what cpj says about hope, the football season is pretty much over for all practical purposes. Sure the team may win some meaningless acc games, but expect a loss to the big dawg and another trip to shreveport. Hang in there. Then SUDDENLY, 1990 came along and look what happened. Do you think we Tech fans were expecting that? I can tell you since I was there…..NO!!!! It was a total shock to all of us, and certainly one of the most amazing turn-arounds probably in the history of college football. CPJ has brought plenty to the table, and most Tech fans (TRUE Tech fans) see an awful lot of hope, and a glimmer of what might yet be. @ HBTD…..remember, it is much easier to recruit for an SEC school, especially a UNIVERSITY, where there are sufficient majors that any athlete can get by in. CPJ’s biggest problem is attracting top-level talent to an ACC school in this particular region and to a school that does not offer “easy” majors. Don’t get me wrong; I am not putting down UGA’s academics. But as a true UNIVERSITY, UGA simply has more courses of study to offer than Tech does.

Comparing the course requirements at Tech to those at a UNIVERSITY is NOT an excuse; it is a fact. Dodd struggled with the same problems, as did Ross and O’Leary. It was much easier for Dodd, because he could always use the “prep school” route to qualify his recruits. But it took time for both Ross and O’Leary to build good teams; it didn’t happen overnight. The same is true for CPJ. Now eill there come a time when the wait has to come to an end? Who knows? But whoever comes in next will have the same problems and have to start all over from ground zero.

I go to the games; I don’t watch them on TV. So I don’t know if he is given any camera time or not. I would doubt, however, that the TV networks would focus the camera on him during a timeout. If they didn’t go to commercial, then I am pretty sure they could find better things to use the cameras for than focusing them on the coach—-any coach.

If Tech wins out, the best possible bowl they could get is the Chick-Fil-A bowl that assumes FSU goes to the BCS championship and either Miami or VT get another BCS bid. After the CFA bowl, everything else is just another toilet bowl to me. I would like to see Vad get some more experience this weekend. He has every thing in his head; he has always operated like that, even while winning those NC’s at Ga Southern. He KNOWS what is going on, and he knows how to respond to it. We fans may not always like the way he responds, but he does what he, as an experienced coach who designed the offense he runs, thinks is best.

Highly Respected Southern Troll

@Supersize – Paul Johnson isn’t Bobby Ross. Ross inherited a team essentially left in shambles by Bill Curry and won a national championship four years later.

As far as your comments about Johnson initially struggling at Georgia Southern – NOT true at all. He won the Southern Conference championship every year he was there, went 14-0 his SECOND year (only to lose to UMass in the championship game), won the national championship in years three and four, and took the Eagles back to the playoffs in his final year only to lose in the (I believe) semi-finals. Johnson was 62-10 at Southern.

Really?

September 26th, 2012
4:55 pm

4 games into the season and all the texties have given up hope. Even their pipe dreams of beating Georgia come across as hollow and weak. Lucky for all the trade school fans their campus provides great access to lots of crack dealers so filling those pipes will be easy…..well unless they get robbed before they make it to the dope man.

@ Highly….I stand corrected on CPJ’s Ga Southern tenure. I thought I remembered that his first couple of years were less than stellar. My bad. Regarding Ross, however, there were plenty of Tech fans who wanted him gone after year 3. Probably more than want CPJ gone now. However, Ross showed no promise and then delivered big time. I think CPJ has shown (and is still showing) promise but has not yet delivered. I for one am not ready to give up on him, nor do I see any real reason to do so.

______________

Please STOP with the Urban Myths of how hard the Academics are for GT FB players.

No one was mentioning the Academics when GT surged ahead of Miami with 36 straight point. so WHY play the Academics Card after you get your @$$ handed to you?

The TRUTH about the Academics for GT FB players is this:

Most of our players major in BS in BUSINESS ADMIN:

The math Reqs. are SURVEY of Calculus that is not accepted for credit by the Engineering Majors & Science Majors, and Finite Math which is also NOT accepted for Credit by the Engr. & Science Majors.

If it is NOT accepted for Credit by Engineering Majors & Science Majors then is it really “Calculus”?

The Science Requirement that our FB use is NOT CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY or PHYSICS, instead, our FB players fulfill their Science Requirement by taking EARTH & ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE( i.e. Earth Science).

Basically the Business Admin Program at GT is very much in line with the typical Business Admin Program at most large State, Flagship-type Universities.

Gone are the days where our players Major in Industrial Mgmt. and take the same Calculus as Engineering majors and then take the same Biology or Chemistry as Engineering Majors, those days ended after Curry stopped coaching at GT, over 20 years ago.

Here’s the PROOF:
http://scheller.gatech.edu/programs/under/files/bsba_credit_sheet.pdf

So please stop playing the Academic card Supersize!
