You should be able to pick your own section for this one. Noon start, hot weather, bad opponent, and a game after one of the worst coaching jobs in school history. People would rather stay home and play with the kids next weekend I’d imagine. At least we won’t be going up against Chipper’s last home games with the extra traffic.

GT puts up 50 on MTSU. MTSU rolls up 600 yes on offense and wins in OT as Johnson calls 3 straight B back dives from the 1 with no TD. 22000 fans watch the debacle.

And to all you GT fans saying who can we get better that CPJ let me ask, where did Clemson get Sweeney, UM get Golden, UVa get their HC (can’t remember his name), etc. There are plenty of coaches out there who have beaten Johnson. And they all seem to be able to hire defensive coordinators who have a clue.

Rambling ……… MTSU off this week = extra prep time for PJ’s O.

Maybe GT will only score a FG or hopefully 10-13 pts. It is the logic of many that teams with extra prep time dominate GT’s O…..

5150, keep supporting mediocrity and that is what DRad will give us. Someone has to step in and force him to get a DC that isn’t 70 years old and understands the game today. The college game has passed him by and Tech will never win more than 6-7 games as long as he is allowed to stay. That is why they can’t sell tickets. There is never any reason for optimism with this staff and Johnson’s stubborness to every try something like the forward pass. Then he and Wes laugh at anyone that calls into his show and suggest his system might not be working perfectly and try to explain the concept of the pass. CPJ has to stay since we can’t afford to replace him for 6 more years, but at least get a non senile DC and QB coach that can develop someone. for a change. Quit hanging on to guys just because they coached with you 15 years ago.

Lets ask Radokovich who’s on his short list. Hopefully someone not wedded to the TO or 3-4 defense. How about someone who molds the system to the players on hand rather than someone who tries to fit the players to the scheme?

BIFF…………..please define……………….. “keep supporting mediocrity”
After the regular season is OVER how many teams will be 12-0, 11-1, 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, 7-5?
What is MEDIOCRITY?
34-19 in 4 years?
36-21 total?

What is your job title? Have you made CEO yet? Are you a President or Vice President of a Fortune 500 company? Then you are LESS than MEDIOCRE right?

16-14 since Chan’s players left is pretty mediocre to me. I am not the one taking $2 million and insisting that no changes need to be made since his system is perfect. He wants to coach big boy football so he has to face the fact that people aren’t happy with losing seasons. Chan never had a losing season and everyone wanted him gone but you are happy with Paul “No defense” Johnson?

5150 UOAD, I like the idea of getting Goose here after Johnson’s contract runs out.
Is it too late to turn in the tickets and get points? I’m not going to go to a noon game. I’ve got better things to do. I’ll DVR it and maybe watch it sometime during the week when I’m bored and have nothing else to do. I can’t believe that for the first time since ‘97, I really don’t want to go to the game. I’ve scheduled work around games, taken red-eyes, flown through crazy connections just to make games. I’ve already stopped donating to the AT Fund, and I think next year I’m not even going to get season tickets (I’ve had mine for 10 years now). If I want to go to a game, I’ll scalp one for half face value.

If we were going to fire Wommack to get someone better, why the heck would CPJ hire Al(zeimer) Groh? Maybe he reminded CPJ of some crazy uncle he was fond of? Lots of better defensive minds out there. It was an especially dumb hire because we did not have the players for the 3-4.

When the AD did not keep O’Leary’s pay low or be up front with wanting him to leave so he could promote Freigen, it was all over for us.
Wasn’t O’Leary forced to hire Freigen because his first choice was so predictable?
Of course Freigen was fortunate to have Joe Hamilton but we looked so well drilled that Munson gave us the rare compliment: “Tech driving down the field like we are Wake Forest”.
Doubt we’ll ever hear that again.

Hey now, don’t get carried away… no one is going anywhere, at least until this season ends. (Even then, I doubt it.) We’ve got to pull ourselves back together… we still have Clemson & uga who need to be beaten. 8-4 is very possible, and 10-2 not out of the question.

We need to look at the video and correct our mistakes.

Top 3 Reasons for defensive meltdown (and all 3 are fixable, according to me):

1. Confusion & miscommunication: I saw many guys confused and moving around on defense, especially in the first half. We had illegal substitution penalties, guys out of position, and blown coverages because of this. The hurry up offense didn’t help.

2. Complacency & lack of stamina: Once we got that 17-pt lead, we loosened up on defense, and started playing conservatively on offense (basically prevent D and play-not-to-lose/ball-security offense). This has nothing to do with schemes or player ability. It’s a mental issue. All of our 3 OT losses in the past five games have come because we’ve become complacent, lost focus, and allowed the other team to come back and take it away from us. Also our conditioning/stamina was poor… especially as our offense was not holding on to the ball in the 4th quarter like they usually do. Just need to do some more endurance training from here on out.

3. Missed tackling: This is can be fixed. We’ve played good defense most of this season (excepting Miami and 4th quarter v. VT) and I know our boys can wrap up their tackles, deliver hits, and cover well. We just underestimated Miami’s players caliber, and forgot that we needed to tackle these players properly to bring them down.

The other main reason was the lack of pressure on the QB – Morris had all day to throw, but this is something we can’t fix. We don’t have good linemen, and blitz packages will screw up our zone coverage schemes. But fix the other 3, and we should be fine.

No fan of AG and certainly no fan of the 3/4 (sometimes perhaps 1/2) D. But AG’s coaching style
probably has little to do with him being 70. I did not like him as a coach in VA and he was not 70 then.

Also no big fan of the option (and I many times wonder how much “option” TW uses-he called his own number 20 times Sat). Perhaps there are more called plays (coach or TW=???) than we realize. May never know.

I might enjoy PH when he finally moves back to NC. Perhaps Boone.

No reason to fire Paul. Drad has proven he isn’t very good at hiring coaches. He had a difficult time with the basketball search and finally had to settle for someone getting run off at Dayton. He hired a former LSU friend for volleyball and they had their first losing season in years last year. Softball has been his one good hire so far.Paul Johnson was a nice gamble with a cute little offense but his inablility to recruit is killing him now. DRad was dumb and and extended his contract a couple of times because he actually thought that Auburn might want him. DRad just has to be more hands on and refuse to pay the salary of some of his assistant coaches and hope that Paul’s ego will force him to resign or accept the fact that he needs a real defensive coach. Unless Paul is humbled a little bit and realizes he can’t continue to refuse to adjust to Division 1 foooball, we will continue to win 6-7 games a year and maybe make it to Shreveport.

Actually GT is on the win-loss schedule I predicted in late August.

GT does not recruit the type players that one requires to win against quality teams. GT has not done that since the 1950’s. And I see no reason to think they will do so in the future.

In fact, GT is 328 – 266 – 10 since 1960; 62 games over .500 for the last 52 years. Why on earth would anyone expect it to be any different for the next 52 years?

Facts are facts. GT is an average football program. GT is an exceptional academic institution as is evidenced by their member ship in the Association of American Universities.

And before you GT guys jump all over me I have been a GT fan since Pepper Rogers kicked that field goal in the 1952 Orange Bowl.

Maybe one challenge of the entire system of offense & defense is that our defense never gets to practice against the kind of offenses we see every week. OK – we have a scout team to practice against, but that does not compare with the competition we see weekly in games. Also there was no coaching on the field when the game was on the line. The Miami coach huddled the entire team on the sideline and fired them up. PJ walked around (by himself) while our entire team watched Miami’s coaches rallying their troops. This poor showing is on PJ – you can’t blame the defense or the players. .

…Clemson found Swinney on the sideline – he was already an assistant there…and as to who is the better coach between he and CPJ, CPJ has won 2 of 3 against the Tigers (or is it 3 of 4?). Clemson’s program has been no great deal since Bowden was fired/quit…In fact they are a lot like Tech in that they can score but they cannot stop anybody, especially with a lead or at crunch time…

GTBob,

You are not a fan if you think we will fall to MTSU.

Some of you guys are going crazy !

We scored 36 points people, stop saying the option will not work. You sound like Ga fans calling it a high school offense after they give up 500 yards rushing.

What is true is that it’s time to replace Groh. It’s simple and the sky is not falling.

Calm down please !

And, Chris Peterson is NOT going anywhere – he has had his share of interest and so far has resisted the big salary thrown at him (he learned from his predecessor, Dan Mullin, who went to Colorado and got in way over his head and was fired…

There are others out there who MIGHT be interested, but GT is not a plum job due to the academics and the schedule…it is an excellent job for the right person, but it is not a highly desireable job in the mind of guys who want to succeed – yes, somebody will take the money, but will they be any more successful, it is hard to say, and many do not want to take that chance and end back up in the “minor” leagues after getting fired at Tech…

@collegefootballfan: I agree with you. That’s why I don’t understand why so many people are calling for CPJ’s head. We are the definition of an average football program. I believe our fans were so use to average that when we had 9 and 10 wins season in CPJ’s first two seasons, fans got really excited. Trust me, I want to win more than anyone. I cracked my brother’s wooden door with a baseball after we lost yesterday. I know this year is off to the start we were hoping to avoid, but things are better under CPJ than they were under Gailey. Our offense is there. If we get a defense that can actually win us a game, we’re gonna be taking a step above average IMO.

So, reading through the comments, Friedgen, who was only moderately successful at Maryland, would be better than Johnson. Apparently because Larry Munson gave his offense a compliment once. Not like Johnson’s offense hasn’t racked up yards against UGA.

Mike London of UVA is now guaranteed to be a good hire? His previous accomplishments are very similar to Johnson’s. He just go spanked by Johnson and his high school offense. Probably going to have a losing record this year. That’s with a lot of Al Groh’s recruits, who actually had very strong recruiting classes.

Dabo Swinney still isn’t proven to be better. He’s won at about the same clip as Johnson. They’ve won the same number of ACC championships.

George Godsey? Already want to replace a proven winner (36-21 is a proven winner) with a complete unknown?

Funny someone mentions Chris Peterson. He uses the exact same model that Johnson uses. Undersized/lesser talent recruits, redshirt them, and play mostly upper classmen.

Todd Berry? Really? If you want to base it off of one or two big wins, then Johnson’s your man, right? UGA and the ACC championship. There, he’s just as accomplished as Berry. Except that Berry doesn’t have a career winning record.

And according to some on here, Johnson refuses to learn the forward pass. Did you watch the game yesterday? Did you see the shotgun and pistol formations? Do you feel confident with Tevin Washington passing it 20 times a game?

Can we put to bed the “high school offense” label? It proved that with top recruits it can rack up the yards and points. It’s now proving it can run up the yards and points with lesser talent against top-talent teams. (In case some of you didn’t notice, the offense was real good yesterday.) Want to argue they were sluggish in the fourth quarter? Ok. Ever think that those massive scoring drives the defense gave up lead to facing a rested Miami defense?

There has been a “groundhog day” feel since last year’s bowl game. The crushing last minute/overtime losses are concerning. You have to think figuring out what is causing that is a top priority right now. First is an aberration. Second is concerning. Now a third, there’s got to be some adjusting and studying being done. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again, but don’t knee-jerk fire as good a coach as GT will find. Especially one that is as good if not better than those you guys are comparing him to.

UGA = Yawn
