With two ACC Coastal Division losses, Georgia Tech is left to take a test it had no interest in taking when the season began three weeks ago Monday. Do the Yellow Jackets have the requisite coaching and leadership to compete over the final eight games of the season with almost no chance of winning the ACC title?
Objectives remain – beating rival Clemson for the sixth time in seven tries, ending losing streaks to Georgia (three games and 10 out of the past 11) and in bowl games (seven) and winning 10 games for only the fourth time since 1956. Tech can show its defensive hemorrhage was an aberration.
The first item, though, will be picking up the pieces from their emotionally costly loss Saturday, a 42-36 overtime defeat to Miami at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Monday, Tech begins preparing for Middle Tennessee State, a game that the ACC announced Sunday will kick off at noon at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
“I feel like we have some good leaders on the team, and they’re going to keep everybody up,” A-back Tony Zenon said. “We just have to have a good week of practice and stay focused on the rest of the games.”
There will be plenty to address as the Jackets prepare for the Blue Raiders and correct errors from Saturday’s loss. The game included a series of lamentable plays for the Jackets, who valiantly returned from a 19-0 first-quarter deficit by scoring 36 consecutive points, but then gave up the game’s final 23 points.
“We made way too many errors in all three facets of the game,” coach Paul Johnson said Saturday.
The Tech offense produced, with 419 yards and 36 points. Saturday was just the sixth time since the start of the 2009 season that the Hurricanes had given up 36 or more points. However, needing to close the door at game’s end, the Jackets couldn’t. After Miami closed the margin to 36-22 with 4:25 to play in the third quarter, Tech produced four first downs over its next three possessions, one by penalty. It gave the Hurricanes more time to come back and returned the Jackets defense to the field more quickly than preferred.
Once back on the field, Miami exploited missed tackles, strong pass protection and advantageous play-calling to force overtime. Hurricanes quarterback Stephen Morris threw 52 times without being sacked once. In the fourth quarter and overtime, Tech allowed 216 yards on 23 plays, a 9.4 yards-per-play average. It called to mind come-from-ahead losses to Virginia Tech in the season opener and Utah in the Sun Bowl.
Prior to the Sun Bowl, Johnson was 31-2 in which Tech led or was tied after three quarters. Tech is 2-3 in those situations since then.
On a day full of mistakes and errors, one of Tech’s last was among the most costly. On their final offensive play of their 42-36 overtime loss to Miami Saturday, the Jackets apparently played into the Hurricanes’ hands.
On Tech’s overtime possession, Miami defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio anticipated a quarterback keeper on the 4th-and-1 play from the 2-yard line and handcuffed the Jackets accordingly. D’Onofrio had linebacker Eddie Johnson re-position himself after quarterback Tevin Washington audibled to a new play at the line of scrimmage, Hurricanes coach Al Golden said Sunday on his teleconference.
In short, Johnson lined up inside of offensive tackle Ray Beno, enticing Washington into changing the play at the line of scrimmage. When he did, Johnson re-aligned himself outside Beno, putting the Hurricanes in favorable alignment to defend Tech’s new play, a toss to A-back Orwin Smith.
“They made a check and we made a check after they made a check,” Golden said. “I guess we got [them] last on that one.”
Recognizing a toss play would likely get blown up against Miami’s new alignment, but following the team protocol permitting one “check” at the line of scrimmage, Washington chose to keep the ball and try for the first down himself. He was stopped short of the first down by Johnson, who was unblocked on the play. Miami won two plays later on a 25-yard run by running back Mike James.
“He didn’t stick with [the toss], but he’s the leader,” Smith said. “I trust his instincts.”

I say we play it straight to the Clemson game, if we win the Clemson game we can still have a nice seasonI BUT, if we lose that one then let’s start playing the future more and more each week. I am not saying burning red shirts, but the younger guys should start getting the bulk of the reps after the first qtr. of each game.

TRUTHHURTS – I totally agree with your comment.
The one thing that makes me the most upset going to GT games is the primary alum section that sits on the 50 in the gold seats on the bottom tier of the visitor side. These are rich filled Tech tradition families and alum that…
A) never show up on time for the game if they even go despite having all home game tickets
B) never scream, yell, or support our team
C) arrive 30 mins late to the game only to leave at the end of the 3rd quarter
Come on people. SHOW SOME SUPPORT. If not for CPJ and CAG, but for the students that are giving their all for GT.

What I always want is for GT and UGA to be 1 and 2 when it comes time for our little get together. Doesn’t matter which is which at that moment. Re Recruiting: As someone said earlier, it can be done at Tech:See Bobby Ross, Pepper Rogers, etc. You have to find the right coach and give him enough incentive to stay after he has some success.

Why does everyone keep saying we “took our foot off the pedal”, “didn’t play lights out”, “play like their hair is on fire”?
When we say that Tech took its foot off the pedal we mean that Paul Johnson got extremely conservative with his play calling trying not to lose the game. It doesn’t mean the players weren’t trying. This loss was pretty much because of poor coaching. CPJ playing not to lose and Al Groh not having a clue what to do on defense.

Neither of those guys were great recruiters and GT and college football has changed significantly since then. There is no coach in the country that could come into GT right now and recruit well on a consistent basis.

Rochester Jacket; GT can’t recruit talent or win on the national championship?? Really?? Have you forgotten the 1990 National Championship?? How about all the talent that Coach’s Ross, and O’Leary brought in? Even much maligned Chan Gailey brought in better talent. As long as CPJ is in charge no GT won’t win another ACC title or be a Top 20 team. He needs to go back to Navy where they have a 100+ on the roster.

Great game by the Jackets, gaveMiami all they could handle and took them to OT.
For Tech to be a special team they need a special QB, TW is ok, but not the special QB that will take Tech to next level.
I think the biggest drop in Tech has be from Nesbitt to Tevin Washington. I don’t even think Nesbitt was great but he was a lot better then TW. Watch and see, Tech could keep everything the same and put JH14, Tracy Ham, Pat White, D Robinson, etc at QB and they would go undefeated

“taking our foot off the pedal”?!?!?! People mistake this for the fact that Tevin is not a playmaker. If we were getting first downs in the last 25 minutes of the game, no one would be saying we took the foot off the pedal.
When Tevin is QB, it always looks like we are taking our foot off the pedal.

Time to play VAD so he will be ready next year. Most of the offense is coming back. He will be the one needing experience. Need to recruit more defense–offense is scoring. Switch to a 4-3 permanently or at least 65% of the time. Need more D.

There’s enough idiotic blather on this site to rival what comes out of Washington DC. I remember similar sentiments expressed about a GT coach before, right before he won the NC in 1990. Guess he showed his doubters and then left because he felt no loyalty, support or patience from his critics.
Chan Gailey had finally been there long enough to get his recruiting team well known and established to the right high schools, and to overcome the loss of probationary schollies that was an admin’s fault, not his. He was on the verge of stringing together several years of top 15 talent when the armchair idiots decided he had to go.
Now we have one of the brightest minds in college football, and one of the most competitive in CPJ, and the clueless geniuses once again appear to call for another coaching change. He’s bringing in talent that won’t be evident for another 2-3 years. wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him win the ACC or even a MNC, and then thumb his nose at an ungrateful fan base as he leaves for greener pastures.
It takes time to build a college program. It’s not like the pros where there’s a draft, trades and free agents.

Everyone blames recruiting. CPJ’s recruiting rankings are basically the same as Chan Gailey’s. Look it up.
This team is mediocre because of one player. The most IMPORTANT player. The QB.
I’m not blaming Tevin. I’m blaming CPJ for sticking with Tevin. Vad should have been QB LAST YEAR. But CPJ is too conservative to start a freshman (or redshirt freshman) at QB.

I hope Sat’s game was a wake up call and a defining moment for our GT football program. Adversity such as this either makes you better or bitter. Hopefully, we can make it better. Old Timer had a long commentary that effectively describes current state. Maybe this injection of humility will strengthen our resolve. CPJ is not as aggressive and creative in his play calling as he was in 2008 or 09. We seem to be playing not to lose–be it protecting a lead with 44 secs left or a 17 pt lead with 1.5 QTRS left. We have become too predictable on offense and the D needs a lot of things, but a pass rush would be a big start. We’re going to have to dig deep to finish strong and if we do, that would be admirable—I hope we don’t roll over.
I will always support GT and I still like this offense and our coaches. We will see how flexible they are to make changes. What will be interesting will be not only the rest of this season but next year. If Vad is more comfortable in the pistol formation than the traditional TO formation, will we run that or will CPJ force Vad to get better running the TO under center? CPJ needs to adjust his offense to fit his personnel and not the other way around. IF CAG’s pro style 3-4 is too complex for college students to master in a short timeframe, then he needs to make changes. Not only did the D looked gassed out there in the 4th QTR—they looked confused throughout most of the game—often not even getting set before the ball was snapped. We’ll see if our old dog coaches can learn new tricks and if so I’ll continue to support them. If we continue the way we are this year and next, then yes it may be a time for a change.

I have watched both the VT and Miami game this year. The interior line is getting whipped on both sides of the ball late in the game. No depth and it shows. The size differential is not helping either. In order to win you have to be able to pass at some time in the game. CPJ needs to understand this. You can not beat a team with more depth and size on a consistant basis running the football. These guys are fast and strong. They will adapt to the option in the 4th quarter. Every now and then you will win one but you will lose more. You people need to support your team. When those young men are on the sidelines or on the field they feed off of your energy. You need to show up in force and be loud. Let them know you support them. You may not like CPG or CAG but support your school. Stand with your head up win or lose. You never keep a coach for any length of time besides Coach Dodd and one of the main reasons why is you do not support your team.

But, as a consumer, I’m contemplating finding a substitute product. And, that should scare CPJ and D-Rad. Faith will only keep me in front of the TV for so long.

1. Truth Hurts. You hit the nail on the head. Our fans are pathetic at games. There is really no home-field advantage. Students are OK, but the adults in the room come late, leave early, sit on their duffs and glare at anyone around them that dares to stand and/or cheer.
2. Johnson needs to wake up and hopefully Saturday’s game did it. Stop blaming and look in the mirror. Stop calling plays that everyone, including the opposing team, knows are coming. Stop refusing to add a passing game to open up our offense. Stop ignoring the defense – in recruiting and games. Stop throwing your players under the bus for “not executing” or “not being up for the game”. You are head coach and the buck stops with you.
3. The Groh experiment is officially over. When an experiment keeps getting the same unsatisfactory results over and over again, you change at least some of the ingredients.
4. Love TWs heart, but talent is just not there. Realize Vad is green and there will be a learning curve, but I’m willing to take our lumps to get growth – and have a chance.
The rest of the season will be interesting. We need players to step up and lead. They are not going to get inspiration from Johnson or Groh. And don’t read the press if we start doing better – it always causes us to come in overconfident and we just aren’t that good.
Not giving up on the Jackets. Just need a reason to sit through any more of these “heart wrenching” losses.

If GT is getting whipped on the line of scrimmage, VT and Miami would not be coming from behind to tie us.
I disagreed with hiring Groh because I do not think Virginia should have to keep paying him millions when he was fired.
If they can tear up the contract when they want to leave then the AD should be able to do so too.
I do not want someone like that on the coaching staff of my team.
Some on here say CPJ is not going anywhere.

Despite what some would tell you on this board, it’s 90% (lack of) recruiting. Tech will never recruit like UGA, but there’s no reason we should get beat out every year by the NCStates and UNCs.

I’m confused as to why the offense keeps getting brought up… They scored plenty of points.. But, the issue is the “D”… I mentioned this from day one… and what did I get??? No… the “D” is better. Come on man!!! No it’s not!!! The 3-4 is not being ran remotely close to being right… Not one blitz package disguised worth a flip. I don’t even know if “no show” knows what a 2 or 3 gap is?? Much less gap defense…which…by the way… a 3-4 is based on. No gap assignments at all. This is coaching.. Plain and simple. When the coach has no clue.. the players have no clue. “no show” needs to be fired and quick!! CPJ!!! You can still save the season and your job.. Listen careful… your fondness of Al “no show” will cost you your job.. Mr.. stupid (Groh) doesn’t know the first thing about running a defense. Maybe he was good on Madden Football on the playstation?? But, as a coach?? He sucks…

Forget defensive scheme, it is obvious that at least the d-backs don’t know how to tackle. Sweeting and Golden should be dismisse from the team! If at 18, 19 or 20 years old they do not know how to tackle and are playing on the defenssive side of the ball??? As my old 8th grade coach told one kid on our team, “son, you might want to try out for soccer”. Complete embarassment.

@Wondering: I was thinking almost exactly the same thing. The “pat” answers (bad talent, bad system) just don’t wash. How does one explain GT’s 36-0 run against Miami? When Clemson threatened to get back in the game last year, he recognized the play, found the ball and picked it off.
He did the same thing during the our 36 unanswered points.

Without a solid O line and B back that can break through a tackle once in a while, the offense is on the sidelines and the defense is on the field, getting gashed and gassed.

Evidently not.
Tech stopped throwing the ball until third down during the Miami comeback.
Now how many times have football fans seen that?
The defense got gassed from being on the field so much since the offense went conservative and predictable.
One game like this would be Ok.
But this is three similar losses in the last five.
The game has passed Groh by.
A player said Tech wasn’t prepared for all the passing Miami did.
That’s bad but what is worse is no halftime adjustment.

Is Vad Lee the answer? Could be worth a shot to generate some excietment & enthusiasm. Will CPJ give Lee more playing time? Doubtful. CPJ wants a game manager who understands his system and will minimize mistakes & turnovers. That is Tevin. Rember CPJ’s comment a few weeks ago? “The most popular player on every team is the back-up QB”. That should tell everyone advocating Lee at QB what CPJ’s intentions are.
Next question: Will this team leave it all on the field for CPJ and CAG? Based on what I have seen lately, I’d say no. Just as the fans are losing confidence in CPJ and his system, I’d say so are the players. Maybe even more so on the defensive side of the ball with CAG.

@ Justin.. CPJ isn’t the issue with me. It’s that lack of defense coach… CPJ needs to seriously man up and send him packing.. Losing “no show” wouldn’t add to the chaos.. The “D” is nothing but chaotic. If players are out of position, that is a coaching issue. I couldn’t count the number of times players were out of position. The 3-4 is gap oriented and if one player is out of position the “D” can have huge holes in it. Which… was very obvious, if you saw the game. Either the players don’t listen at all… (which I doubt is the case) or the coach is a blooming dummy (which I think is the case).. He tries to run a pro type defense, but doesn’t know the first thing about it. No disguise in blitzes.. when he does blitz. I mean seriously you have a lead, you know they are going to pass and yet you don’t call any blitzes?? Worthless… just worthless. “no show” has got to go.
