Georgia Tech-Miami live blog

Three storylines

Can Georgia Tech take control early?

In losing the past three games to Miami, the Yellow Jackets have had first-half deficits of 17-3, 14-0 and 14-0, trouble for a team that doesn’t play its best from behind. A repeat of that scenario may not doom the Jackets, but it may signal to them and the Hurricanes that history may be repeating itself. Coach Paul Johnson has a knack for breaking big plays early, such as the 70-yard touchdown pass to B-back Zach Laskey on the Jackets’ first play from scrimmage last week. A repeat might encourage another frenzy.

What will the Tech defense throw at the Hurricanes?

Defensive coordinator Al Groh is wary of the damage that Miami true freshman running back Duke Johnson, one of the highest-rated prospects at his position last year, can cause to his unit. He’s averaging 9.2 yards per carry and has scored six of Miami’s 11 touchdowns this season. Wide receiver Allen Hurns, who sat out the Hurricanes’ win over Bethune-Cookman last Saturday with a concussion, is a playmaking threat. Tech’s improved defense will face its toughest test thus far.

How many yards will be the B-backs have at game’s end?

If B-backs Zach Laskey or David Sims pile up yards, the prognosis will be good for the Jackets. If they’re not, it probably means that the offensive line is getting backed up, which means the option plays aren’t working, which means a boatload of trouble for Tech. But if center Jay Finch and guards Omoregie Uzzi and Shaquille Mason move Miami off the line of scrimmage for dive plays for the B-backs, the game will swing in Tech’s favor.

A win for Georgia Tech would …

End its three-game losing streak to the Hurricanes and move the Jackets ahead of Miami in the Coastal Division standings.

A win for Miami would …

Go far to shut the door on Tech’s hopes of winning the ACC championships.

Matchup to watch

Georgia Tech wide receiver Darren Waller vs. Miami cornerback Thomas Finnie

At 6-foot-5 and 228 pounds, Waller has seven inches and 43 pounds on Finnie and a matchup that physically he should be able to exploit, both downfield and as a run blocker.  Still looking for his first career catch, Waller will have plenty of playing time along with Jeff Greene. The depth chart is thinner after starter Jeremy Moore left the team Tuesday for personal reasons.

The history book

Series record: Georgia Tech leads 10-7

Last meeting: With two costly turnovers in the first half, Tech fell behind 14-0 in the first half and lost 24-7 last October at Sun Life Stadium. The Jackets defense played strong, but did not get much help from an offense that generated 134 rushing yards.

I the first couple of poss. will tell if we will be able to move the ball the rest of the game.i think we will, but if it looks like we are running into a brick wall early on ,then we are in alot of trouble

I agree, depends on the OL blocking the UM defense.

If Tech played like it did against VA then they will win going away. Miami has not played well when the competition lines up and plays smash mouth football and that’s exactly what I would expect Tech to do today. This team is starting to show it’s maturity and talent so I would think it’s going to be a long day for the Canes as long as Tech takes care of its business!

Go Jackets! Humble the “u”!

If there’s a bigger # on the scoreboard under GT than under UM when the final whistle blows it means the Jackets got the W, and I’m just fine with that!

Disappointed I cant be at the game today. Should be a dandy. I dont see this one being close after halftime. Hope our Jackets can lay the hammer down and play like they have been the past couple weeks. Beat the ‘U’!

Wow Paul Johnson has to be the worst coach in the world. Offense is pretty good until you get behind then it’s game over. That’s why you shouldn’t go for it all the time on 4th. Have some faith in your defense. Miami scores here its game over.

Tech looks like crap so far. Is it just me, or are they moving at half-speed? Those option plays were so slow to develop that any decent high school team would have stopped them. Miami obviously came to play. It’s early, but I see absolutely no enthusiasm or energy on our team — that had better change very quickly or this will be a looonnnnggg day. Still confident we can win, but Tech has to get their heads straight.

Following via ESPN’s “gamecast” right now.

PJ’s gotta learn how to PUNT the friggin ball!!!!!! 4th & 3 from near midfield, and his ball carrier LOSES yds.

Do what UM just did …. PUNT!!! Pin the opponent deep! GT now has to go 95 yds to tie the game.
Trust your special teams PJ!

Yeah actually I do. Trying to be like another Bob that comes on the UGA side all the time. I actually would prefer both UGA and GT to be undefeated when they play every year. Just don’t think it’s ever going to happen. At least not on GT’s side. Offense just not good if they fall behind which does happen sometimes even to good teams.

Hey Bob, so being a jerk is okay if someone else does it? Okay now I get it LOL! BTW no offense is particularly good if it coming from behind all the time. Even the vaunted pro style. Usually an offense is behind because the defense hasn’t made a play. Beside, this offense has shown time and time again it is capable of scoring in one play :-)

And we need to fire whoever is in charge of equipment and fitting! Tevin apparently has no clue how a helmet SHOULD fit, since he can’t go a game without losing his helmet (although a UVA tore it off at least once — but if it’s fit correctly it’s not that easy to pull off).
