Tech notes: Milton shines on special teams

1. Georgia Tech defensive back Chris Milton first caught special-teams coordinator David Walkosky’s attention as a member of the scout team.

“Everything he did, he gave unbelievable effort,” Walkosky said. “He was full go and then he was making plays against the [first team].”

He hasn’t stopped. Milton has been named the Yellow Jackets’ special-teams player of the week for the past two games. He was perfect on his assignments against Presbyterian College and then 16 of 18 against Virginia, including a touchdown-saving tackle on a kickoff return.

“I feel like you’ve just got to want to do it,” said Milton, a redshirt freshman from Charlton County High.

That was the most noticeable play, but there have been plenty of others. He came within inches of blocking a Virginia punt, and probably would have had the punter not been directing the ball away from Milton’s side. Against Virginia Tech, on a punt return in which Jemea Thomas bobbled the catch, Milton had blocked Virginia Tech’s gunner into the end zone, giving Thomas space to fall on the ball.

“That was every play on punt,” Walkosky said. “The (Virginia Tech) guy was never a factor in the game. [Milton] just really dominated his guy.”

Milton plays on all of the “big four”– the kickoff, punt, kickoff return and punt return teams, sharing the field with several Tech starters like safeties Isaiah Johnson and Jamal Golden, wide receiver Darren Waller and Thomas.

“He studies his opponent, he practices at an unbelievably high level,” Walkosky said. “There’s no question why it happens.”

2. B-back David Sims, last year’s starter, is expected to play Saturday against Miami, but Zach Laskey will start according to the depth chart released Thursday.

Offensive tackle Morgan Bailey, safety Fred Holton and B-back Charles Perkins are listed as out. With wide receiver Jeremy Moore having left the team Tuesday, the starters are Jeff Greene and Waller. Their backups are Anthony Autry and Corey Dennis, who was moved from defensive back this week.

4. The athletic department will host an open house at McCamish Pavilion Saturday before the game, from noon to 2 p.m. There will also be open houses prior to the three home games after that, Middle Tennessee State (Sept. 29), Boston College (Oct. 20) and BYU (Oct. 27). Members of the ticket sales department will be available for those interested in purchasing season tickets.

The Allstate Tailgate Tour will be stationed at the corner of Bobby Dodd Way and Fowler Street. The station will have giveaways, interactive activities and a chance to sign up for a sweepstakes in which the grand prize is a trip to the BCS championship game.

5. Guard Omoregie Uzzi was named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. It judges players in four categories – community, classroom, character and competition.

Uzzi is already a candidate for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the country’s top down lineman.

6. Laskey on the impact his 70-yard touchdown catch has made on his life: “It’s kind of been the same. I guess I got a couple extra friend requests on Facebook.”

Anyone interested in seeing Milton’s speed should go to ESPN and open the box score section of the GT – Presbyterian game, then open the “videos tab” …. it’s a play where the PC RB breaks through for a what he thinks is going to be a TD. Watch how fast Milton catches him.

Milton can really run!

Hope Jackson comes back next week ready to contribute at the WR spot, we really need him to step up. I wonder if there has been any consideration in moving Milton to WR next year, he sounds like a difference maker wherever he ends up.

How many positions can this kid play – special teams, DB and in high school RB, QB, and punter! He can absolutely fly!

@GT fan, the play against UVA really showcased his speed. He got knocked down, got up, and caught the guy from behind from the far side of the field. That’s what happens when effort and God-given speed are combined.

If these injuries had happened two years ago, we would have all been fretting on this blog, but Johnson has done a good job of recruiting and coaching so that we finally have some depth across the board.
Now let’s just knock the swagger out of the “U”

Friday morning before the game and I am getting fired up about the Jackets taking down the “u”! Jump on them early and do not let up. That’s one of the few teams I really don’t like and can’t wait to see the Jackets put a hurtin’ on them!

Go Jackets! Humble the “u”!!!

Did they open up the kicking competition this week? Not having a kicker who can put kick offs in the end zone hurt them last week.

I am glad to see players like Milton having an early impact. When he moves up the depth chart, he’ll be a very good player. Hard work pays.

Don’t lose focus. Take care of the U, then we get a bit of a break against MTSU before going on the road to Clemson. The off week comes after that, so we just need to stay dialed in for three more weeks. This week, its all about the U.

Milton not really in the GT receiver mold….only 5′11″….not that he couldn’t…..I would rather see that athleticism @ RB or DB….should make a heck of a CB….good size & speed….IMHO

Another bellweather test for the Jackets—break the losing streak which some people mystically consider relevant & a big D test in that UM has a fast RB (Johnston?)so we’ll see how we handle speed. UM in general has excellent athletes, but they are depleted and lack depth this year. We should crush them and I hope we do—never let up until the game is over—play backups yes, but full throttle every play. It’s as much a mindset as execution.

Clemson and UGA are the last two average to good teams we play this year… It could have been a very special year had we taken care of business against the Hokies…

Looking forward to the game. The student area in the south endzone this week should be pretty full as well… it’s so much better than last year when there were huge holes in the corners of the student stands… all we need now is to convince the frats/sorors and other organizations to show up earlier so the north endzone is also full by kickoff.

Anyway, looking forward to the game… hoping for nice weather like last time.

I have to say, the level of discourse this week has been particularly good with a certain poster’s absence from the boards.

Is anyone tailgating this weekend? I typically do but I am taking MARTA this time as I think traffic will be a nightmare with Music Midtown here.

Let’s end the streak against the U.

Laskey… classic overachiever… him and Jeff Greene are winners… saw it at Starr’s Mill where they willed wins over Tucker in getting to the State Championship game… Tech is fortunate to have him and Jeff Greene… Tech might have more ‘talented’ b-backs but they don’t have the heart and soul of a Laskey…

Old Gold 37

I highly doubt they have more “talented” B backs than Laskey…if they did they would be starting. It’s time to start giving Laskey credit for being a talented football player. Let’s face it…if you think heart and soul is the only thing that gets you the field your fooling yourself. People need to look at his performance and not at his skin color.
