Georgia Tech wide receiver Jeremy Moore has left the team for personal reasons, coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday.
Moore, a redshirt junior, had started the first three games of the season and had three catches for 64 yards. Moore informed Johnson of the decision Tuesday.
“He had some personal reasons, said that he’s struggled with it before,” Johnson said following Wednesday’s practice. “It’s not the first time he’s thought about it. I just wished him well.”
Moore will remain in school, Johnson said. Moore had a challenging run with the team, suffering multiple injuries and getting little playing time. With a strong spring practice and fall camp, he earned a starting spot and rotated with Darren Waller and Jeff Greene.
True freshman Anthony Autry is now behind Waller and Greene on the depth chart, although Chris Jackson will return next week after being held out for four games because of an academic matter concerning his credit hours. Also, defensive back Corey Dennis was brought over to add depth at wide receiver.

Hate to hear this, Moore had worked his tail off to get where he was on the depth chart. Hope things work out and he gets his degree, should be pretty close being a RSJunior.
With our lack of depth going into next year, the next Johnson, Bey Bey, Cone, Hill, out there should be giving the Jackets some serious consideration about right now.

“He had some personal reasons, said that he’s struggled with it before,” Johnson said following Wednesday’s practice. “It’s not the first time he’s thought about it. I just wished him well.”
While I feel for Jeremy, what the heck is the above statement? Incomprehensible or totally bad grammar? Maybe, just bad reporting? REALLY?

If you are on athletic scholarship and you leave the team, any team, do you also lose your financial aid or more specifically your scholarship? Does Tech have a policy regarding this situation? Whatever the financials, I do wish Mr. Moore well. Get that degree son.

Where was the bad grammar or bad reporting, you dufus? The only questionable grammar was the POSSIBLE omission of “and” before “said” That would probably qualify as poor colloquial grammar at best. But since you weren’t there to hear what Johnson said, then you have no idea what else he might have said. As far as the reporting, I am sure Ken just quoted what was deemed to be important.

@ yellow britches……going way back to Dodd, who would NOT cancel a player’s scholarship no matter what the circumstances (a major point of contention in his in his ongoing battle with Bear Bryant), Tech NEVER cancels a scholarship for any player who stays in school.

Super if Perkins and/or Holten take a medical hardship it does not count toward football scholarships. Same as when McCoy took one. It can still fall under the athletic department like McCoy’s who works as a recruiting intern. This is something Saban does yearly to get away with oversigning. If Moore leaves the team on his own accord he will no longer be eligble for a football scholarship at years end.

@ Ramblin Man……I am pretty sure you are incorrect; as long as a kid remains in school, at least at Tech (and, incidentally, also at UGA), they remain on their original scholarship, and no new player can be given their scholarships. What Saban does, though TECHNICALLY legal, is highly unethical. As I said, neither Tech nor UGA do what he does. I found the following quote: ” the Wall Street Journal pointed out (that) Nick Saban’s medical hardship numbers are way above the norm, and then when former players were asked about those medical hardships and whether or not they felt pressured to take them the players revealed that they were pressured and that they thought the medical hardship was loophole used to bring in better players.” Denzel McCoy is on medical hardship, but he is STILL ON SCHOLARSHIP

Yes. There is nothing dirty about it, if used like it was with McCoy. This allows the player who made a commitment but can’t fulfill it through no fault of his own to stay on scholarship. While also allowing the school to stay competitive. The only reason it has a negative connotation is because Saban would have more in one year than other schools would have in 5.

As a Dawg fan, I hate when any kid leaves a team after working so hard to earn a starting spot… that’s not easy at all in Division I football. Glad he’s staying in school and I wish him the best… this is something that you’d expect from CPJ or Richt, but you’d NEVER see from a guy like Saban or Kiffin. They’d just as soon throw a kid under the bus if he ever possibly even jeopardized a win.
Stick with your classes, Jeremy — you’ll benefit much more from having a degree than from playing football.

Hmmmm….I’m not here to cast aspersions on anyone but that sounds mighty fishy to me, at least for a school that hails itself as the model for “well rounded student-athletes.” Well rounded student-athletes don’t miss games because they have an academic matter concerning their credit hours. I watch these receivers from Tech tear up the NFL and I wonder how a running oriented offense does it but it does. I think Waller and Green are heading to the bright lights too. You look out there every year and there is a big receiver with speed that can block and when he catches the ball he is isolated one on one, beating a small safty. I wish anyone well that wants to leave this factory, they will need it.

It shows a lot of class to be able to step forward, after putting in all that hard work to move up the depth chart, and determine that football isn’t what he wants to do anymore. Although I admire the decision, I am not sure I agree with the idea that he should remain on scholarship. I 100% agree that a player who, through no fault of his own (read: medical not Saban doesn’t think he is good enough) should maintain a scholarship, I don’t think someone who steps away voluntarily should maintain a scholarship. Remember, college tuition is sky high and every scholarship awarded is one less source of revenue coming to the school, which means that everyone paying his/her own way has to pay a little more. There is a reason why athletes deserve scholarships; they bring in revenue for the school and work their @$$es off to stay on scholarship. Essentially, it is like working a full time job to pay their way through college and this young man quit his job.

Maybe he grew tired of playing one of the extended tight end positions (wide receiver) on PJ’s offense. Getting frequently trampled trying to block on the repeated option /toss sweep plays is not a good thing. The NFL does not look for blocking only receivers. They want receivers who have actually caught lots of passes.

None of us know why J. Moore left, and it really is not our business. Your observation though is proven wrong with CPJ’s system placing three WRs in the NFL in the past three years. Would Moore have gotten there or is another on campus now I have no idea, but if NFL coaches and scouts seem to like them and broadcasters keep commenting on them GT most be doing something right.
