Tech notes: Perkins out for long term

Notes from Tuesday.

1. The nature of Georgia Tech B-back Charles Perkins’ injury is unclear, but coach Paul Johnson said it will keep him out of action for a while.

Perkins has what Johnson termed “an upper-body injury” and said that he doesn’t expect him back anytime soon. Asked if Perkins could be out for the season, Johnson replied, “We’ll see.”

It’s another shakeup to the B-back position. Last year’s starter, David Sims, played parts of the Virginia Tech game but sat out the past two to aid his recovery from a stress fracture in his shin. The starter in the past two games, Zach Laskey, was held out of the second half of the Virginia game last Saturday with an injured shoulder. He wore a gold jersey Tuesday, meaning he was kept out of contact drills, but will be ready to play Saturday against Miami. Sims has also been cleared and is expected to play Saturday.

The depth chart issued Tuesday placed Laskey at the top, followed by Sims and Broderick Snoddy sharing the No. 2 spot.

Among other players dealing with injuries, inside linebacker Daniel Drummond (ankle) wore a gold jersey Tuesday. Safety Fred Holton (foot) continues to receive treatment.

“As soon as the medical people turn him loose, we’ll get him back and get him going,” Johnson said of Holton.

2. ACC senior associate commissioner Michael Kelly said that the Sept. 29 Tech-Middle Tennessee State game “could really land anywhere” for its kickoff time. The game was originally publicized by Tech as a 7 p.m. start, but the decision has been ESPN and the ACC’s. ESPN chose to hold off on determining a kickoff time until Sunday as it determines its lineup. Kelly noted that the Sept. 29 schedule has slots for two regional sports network games. One of those games has already been determined, Idaho vs. North Carolina at 3:30 p.m.

If Tech-MTSU is picked up, the likely destination is either as the RSN game (broadcast in metro Atlanta on Fox Sports South) or on ESPNU. The kickoff probably would either be noon or 7 p.m. If neither, the game will stay at 7 p.m. and be streamed online on ESPN3.

3. The wide receivers worked on reading Miami’s secondary coverages Tuesday, wide receivers coach Buzz Preston said. In the past, the Hurricanes have shown press coverage at the line of scrimmage, but then quickly retreated at the snap. The objective of the scheme is to lead the wide receiver into thinking he has to beat the cornerback at the line of scrimmage. In his attempt to get past the corner, who by this point is now backed off, the wide receiver makes a move and reveals his intention of where he is trying to run.

“If you don’t attack it in a hurry, to make them make a decision either to get out of there or to try to jam you, you find yourself in trouble,” Preston said.

4. Tech got a break Tuesday when Miami coach Al Golden revealed that linebacker Denzel Perryman will not play after suffering a leg injury in the Hurricanes’ last game against Bethune-Cookman. Last year, Perryman led all ACC freshmen in tackles with 69. Against Tech, he had 6.5 tackles, including three for loss, and a forced fumble.

5. Quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days has not played much at A-back thus far through three games. Johnson has plans for him.

“When Synjyn comes along, we want to get him in the game more than he played the other night,” he said. “He did some good things when he was in there.”

6. The No. 40 jersey, which is being rotated among players to honor former linebacker, will be worn Saturday by long snapper Tyler Morgan. … Approximately 48,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday’s game. The Virginia game drew 44,225. … A gem of a stat from the Tech sports information department: Tech has a winning record against all teams with catastrophic weather-related nicknames: Iowa State Cyclones (1-0), Miami Hurricanes (10-7), Tulane Green Wave (35-13) and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-1).

Thanks for reading.

Not good for CP. Maybe S Days can tryout at B back! Seriously though, I love Days’ attitude, his team spirit and willingness to contribute where ever he can. Someday I hope I can see Fred Holton play in a real game.

Fred wants to play, that is for sure and he wants to play against the ‘Canes this weekend too, but his foot has to heal before he can and it’s taking longer than they thought.

Solid theory, Stinger, though it could also be a rib, pec or shoulder. Those are all more common and have better recovery prospects. If it was a collarbone, I’m not sure CPJ would be so coy. Those are almost always season-ending.

I’m not seeing the draw to a matchup with MTSU. They are 2-1 with a loss to McNeese St. About the only intriguing aspect is that they have an off week, so will get to test the extra preparation time theory. My guess is that E$PN has us on their radar but if we don’t blow out Miami we won’t get the slot.

Tyler Wilson’s “Upper body injury” was a concusion.

Best wishes to Charles.

I have said all along that Days should get a shot at be back. He is abig as the others and seems to like contact.

I have a theory about this. ESPN is waiting to see if we are ranked, if so they’ll slap our game on ESPNU at noon. Ranked teams automatically draw better ratings than unranked teams.

Wish Perkins the best. We’re still OK—Laskey and Sims are effective and workmanlike. Snoddy is the future—he’s a little raw on blocking and synching on the handoffs, but with the Canes thin at LB, there’s a chance he could get that breakaway run. Matt Connors has also shown effective running and blocking skills. Our B-back spot is deep.

The offensive line blocking the defense is more important than who lines up at B-back.

offensive line blocking and reading the option; the two most critical items. it didn’t look like tw read the option well against vt, but much better against virginia.

I’m glad to see the Jacket Nation is not getting carried away with the last two victories. This is the time last year many folks began predicting a NC for Tech. Our task is now simple — just beat Miami U.
If we do that, then we can concentrate on the next game, and then the next.

Johnson had good points on the UM game. They have had our number for 3 years and they have as much talent as any team we will see so it could be a tough game. I hope the “wreckbone” offense is productive early and often!!

With only two games into the season, Perkins does qualify for a medical redshirt. He will have three years of eligibility for some team.

The Crimson Tide isn’t really technically the Mascot or Name for the TEAM.
The Crimson Tide was a nickname created about the FANS and not the team.
Bama is technically the Red Elephants

Tech fans i told yall when yall signed the 2 star Zack Laskey that yall got a diamond in the ruff. That kid will be a great leader as he ages bc he was in high school and he is a work horse and a monster in the wt. room. I watched the kid develop through middle school all the way thru his recruitment and i never understood why he was overlooked by everyone. He might be the best linebacker on the Tech team but yall need him at RB and i am dead serious about that. I love watching him run on saturdays. Keep it up

Thanks dawgs01…

I was afraid that after last year’s Miami game he was going to lose all confidence after flubbing that punt return that gave them a TD. It’s a testament to him that he kept working and cracked the lineup at B-Back.

I am guessing he wil have something to prove on Saturday against the Canes…

FLJ…..A reporter back in like the 20’s-30’s was doing a story on the game. He said he was at the train station and ” The Alabama fans came piling out of the train looking like a Crimson Tide”. The fans loved it, the school loved it and the Name was born. The other teams named in the article are Named after catastrophic weather-related events from their inception. I know it is technical. LOL

Yea i was watching when he fumbled that punt. I had just turned it to the tech game and was like that’s laskey on punt return then he fumbled it and i know he took that hard. Him and the reciever (greene i think;he is on tech too) off stars mill put that team on their back all the way to that state title game their senior yr.

re: Laskey – made it from KY to see the UVA game in-person and I have to say that not only does Laskey run strong, his blocking on the edge was great. He broke several plays for us with his blocks (and, no haters, they weren’t dives at the knees). He was delivering on all aspects of BB role. Keep feeding him chances…..carrying or blocking!

Looking forward to seeing a Laskey, Sims, Snoddy rotation Saturday.

Defense needs to keep the same energy level going on every play. Groh’s guys appear to have his system down pretty well(not having to think so much), just need a little more in the pass rush facet.

GT Dude – not a lot of good games to pick from and time slots to fill. from what i can deduce, there’s Clemson-Boston College, N.C. State-Miami, MTSU-Tech and Louisiana Tech-Virginia on the six-day option. the first two will go on either ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. there’s still one more RSN game, so i guess they’re picking between Tech and UVA and it could still also end up on ESPNU.
