Tech notes: Plenty of mistakes vs. Virginia

Notes from Monday.

1. Georgia Tech pounded lumps into Virginia, pushing the Cavaliers up and down the field on offense and holding the upper hand on defense. Coach Paul Johnson’s reaction after reviewing the game video?

It wasn’t two thumbs way up.

“When you watch the film, there’s a lot of things we didn’t do well, a lot of things we can do better,” he said.

There were missed opportunities for more big plays than the ones the Yellow Jackets hit in amassing eight plays of 20 yards or more and four or 40 or more, the latter for the first time since the 66-24 rout of Kansas last year.

“We had several missed assignment and just finishing blocks and we missed tackles and we screwed up coverages at times,” Johnson said. “We were far from playing the perfect game.”

Tech will play Miami Saturday, a team that has allowed 521 rushing yards in its past two games, one against FCS Bethune-Cookman.

“They have a lot of good athletes, a lot of guys that can run,” Johnson said.

2. Offensive lineman Will Jackson was named the ACC offensive lineman of the week for his role in Tech’s 594-yard outburst against the Cavaliers. It’s the first time he’s won the honor and the first that any Tech player has won ACC player-of-the-week honors this season. After playing guard since his arrival at Tech, Jackson was moved to offensive tackle for the Virginia game.

Tech coaches also chose their players of the game, B-back Zach Laskey on offense, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy on defense and defensive back Chris Milton on special teams. Laskey had 113 yards of total offense, including a 70-yard touchdown reception on Tech’s first play from scrimmage, before coming out of the game with an injured shoulder. Nealy led Tech with 10 tackles, many of them jarring, and intercepted a pass tipped by defensive end Emmanuel Dieke. In earning the special-teams award for the second game in a row, Milton made a touchdown-saving tackle on a Virginia kickoff return and was 16-for-18 on his special-teams assignments, Johnson said.

“I think he’s relishing his role and he’s doing a great job,” he said.

3. B-back David Sims, who missed the past two games as he recuperated from a stress fracture in his shin, is “full go” for Saturday’s game, Johnson said. He was not sure about safety Fred Holton, who has yet to play this season with a foot injury. B-back Charles Perkins is out with an undisclosed injury. B-back Zach Laskey, who missed the second half of Saturday’s game with a shoulder injury but could have returned if necessary, is able to play.

Johnson said he wouldn’t disclose who would start at B-back, Sims or Laskey, until Thursday.

4. Johnson backed off his statement Saturday that he believed that quarterback Tevin Washington’s helmet was pulled off by Virginia players, which resulted in Washington having to leave the game for one play due to a new rule. Johnson said Saturday that he was going by what Washington told him, adding that it was “ironic that it only came off on the goal line in the scrum.”

“I watched the tape,” he said Monday. “I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. It happens all the time.”

Johnson said that players need to wear tighter-fitting helmets. Sunday, Virginia coach Mike London told reporters on a teleconference that he didn’t believe Washington’s helmet was forcibly removed.

“Helmets come off all the time and there’s no one that’s trying to intentionally rip a guy’s helmet off to get him out of the game,” London said.

5. ESPN held off on choosing a kickoff time for Tech’s Sept. 29 home game against Middle Tennessee State. Tech had published a 7 p.m. start time, but the decision ultimately belongs to ACC and ESPN. ESPN has until noon Sunday to announce the kickoff time. The delay means that the game is under consideration for television broadcast.

Thanks for reading.

Hey Ken,
any word from Coach Johnson about using more of the shotgun/pistol formation throughout the season?

FL Jacket … Perryman isn’t the only concern Al Golden has about his D … here’s what ESPN’s ACC blog had (courtesy of the Miami Herald):

Miami coach Al Golden indicated Sunday that if middle linebacker Denzel Perryman, who left the game Saturday against Bethune-Cookman with a right ankle injury and returned on crutches, cannot play Saturday against the Yellow Jackets (2-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), someone is going to have to take charge in a hurry.
“I’m going to continue to be concerned until we can build the type of depth we need at linebacker,” Golden said during a teleconference. “We don’t quite happen to have the numbers we need. If Denzel can’t play — I think Thurston [Armbrister] is going to be fine — but if Denzel can’t play, then we’re going to need guys to step up.
“Gionni Paul is going to get an opportunity, and Jimmy Gaines will get an opportunity, and Tyrone Cornileus.”
Golden did not seem optimistic about Perryman.

If we continue to improve on blocking and if UM is thin at LB, then maybe we go for the near impossible—a 1/2 mile of total offense—880 yds. It can happen and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving opponent.

Looks to me like the Jackets are playing with a fire in their bellies like they have something to prove. And if revenge was a factor in the UVA game, it should that much more against UM. I don’t think this band of Jackets have a let down this Sat. C’mon GT, show the world I’m right !

I want to see this team continue to show the attitude it’s shown thus far in the season. You can see the level of intensity grow. This is translating to the D flying to the ball and laying solid licks on the opposing team. The O line began to show why they were considered a strenght of this team coming into the season. Things are clicking well and I look forward to seeing CPJ really begin to open up the offense. CAG has his D hungry and playiogn with the mindset that they’re not to allow any score and certainly not a cheap one! Can’t wait till Saturday!

The team is so much better this year…special teams are much improved, Tevin is seeing the field, and the players on D seem to understand their roles better. I don’t think we have the talent to beat the Dogs (sorry, just my opinion), but there’s nobody else on the schedule that looks clearly better than the Jackets.

Reebok, hate to disagree with you but based solely on talent Clemson is better than TECH also. Of course they usually are more talented than TECH but you know, the most talented team doesn’t always win. That’s why we can also beat Ugag.

This weekend’s game is not an automatic win. THUG U has had our number for a few years and they should never be considered a giveme game because they do have a lot of athletes. If Golden can get them to play as a team they will be formitable opponent.

I for one do not fear the “U”, but I am cautious; sort of like playing with a snake, if don’t watch what you are doing you may get bit.

gt45, I didn’t see that either but like Super said, good to know. It’s obvious that Vad has established himself as the #2 QB. Synjyn needs to find his new role and embrace it. He can be a valuable player somewhere other than QB, and also be our emergency 3rd string QB.

I’m worried about Charles Perkins. He seems to always have an “undisclosed” injury.

We are all euphoric about the win last Saturday but the reality is that there are still three teams that can beat us the rest of the way. Those are Clemson, Georgia, and Georgia Tech. I think GT scares me the most. We have seen time and again where we get overconfident and don’t play to potentia or ability. I am optimistic that this team is focused and determined. We shall see.

I’ve got to say I’m not looking forward to the game Saturday. I have the same feeling about Tech as I did before the Kansas State game and it’s not a good one. Miami’s defense is just way too young and the team as a whole has played 14 true freshmen this season already. Duke is just one player and needs the other 10 guys on offense and special teams to block for him. Also, this just in, Duke does not play defense. I’ll be cheering on the Canes in person Saturday, but I’m not expecting a win.

One thing is for sure. After the game the Techies will be whining about something. Wonder if you guys are man enough to admit now that CPJ has come out and said he did not see anything unusual about Tevin’s helmet coming off, that you were wrong when you all said you watched the replays and he did get it pulled off by Va. The refs got it right again. And you were all whining just cause you are whiners.

Tevin’s helmet came off simply because it is several sizes too large. The tv certainly made it appear like it squirted off easily with a breeze. Take off the golden glasses for one minute or two and realize Tevin had better get a different helmet. How many times already this season? 4??? in all three games! What if it was a crucial situation? Need this remedied ASAP.

I didn’t realize he (Cornelius Elder) was also looking at us for basketball, and apparently he is a stud PG prospect as well. I don’t know who our last fulltime dual-sport athlete was.

Roddy Jones subbed for the baseball team, but only once Spring practice was over.

Jamal Golden was also drafted our of high school in the MLB draft, although he has focused on football.

Not sure how one could possibly fit a basketball schedule around a football schedule or vice versa. To be an A-Back in this offense you need to block…so you’d better lift in the offseason…but the football offseason is basketball regular season.
