London disputes Tech helmet accusations

Virginia coach Mike London refuted comments by Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington and coach Paul Johnson that Cavaliers players purposely removed Washington’s helmet at crucial moments of Saturday’s game to get him out of the game.

London spoke with Virginia reporters Sunday night on a teleconference.

“I don’t believe that,” he said. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes on there when you’re trying to gang tackle. Helmets come off all the time and there’s no one that’s trying to intentionally rip a guy’s helmet off to get him out of the game . . . During the game, during practice, we don’t advocate that. We don’t teach that. We didn’t even think about doing anything close to that.”

Yet another example of the rule of unintended consequences where the rest of the season will be spent trying to remove the helmets of the opposition. Dumb.

“there’s no one that’s trying to intentionally rip a guy’s helmet off to get him out of the game”

NO ONE? hard to believe.

not a huge story, but as george p said, an unintended consequence of a rule that was put in place to protect players that will instead probably cause several to get hurt before it is changed.

Yeah, right, UVA players don’t intentionally pull off the helmets of the opposition. You could see it very clearly on the Jumbotron at the stadium. Coach London ought to watch game film before making such an inaccurate statement … and then counsel his players appropriately.

I didn’t see what happened on the first occasion, but to be fair, it did look like on the second occasion it happened legitimately because it just wasn’t strapped on tight. That said, I am *sure* it will happen again, on purpose, and without the coaches explicitly “teaching” it to the players.

I was at the game and I watched the game on TV to specifically look for this. On the first attempt it sure did pop out with a lot of forceafter everything had already died down….Kind of funny how only Tevin’s comes off and at the goal line as Johnson said in this one. I am sure if it was not ripped off…..some equipment manager undergrad is getting double checked for his responsibilities.

Nobody would be saying anything if the rule was not in place taking a mandatory removal for one play. Also, we were on a roll at Va Tech when it came off int he red zone and settled for a field goal. We will see in the coming games if it continues.

Glad I’m on record early calling this rule hideous!!
It’s racism in the modern/progressive era!!
The rules intent was simply to take further steps to make sure black players keep the chin strap tight, so their faces can’t be seen on TV!!

At some point in the Season, a big game will be decided when a defensive player is instructed by his coach to “remove” a QBs helmet, therefore causing the QB to sit out a critical play.

TTG – Sounds like you belong in a nursery school class somewhere in the Athens area – actually, I’m not sure if you’re that advanced.

Washington knows what actually happened on the play or immediately after – not London, not you and not me. From my personal playing experience many years back – I can say that things like this happen all the time to get players out of the game or mad so they are not mentally focused but thinking about revenge – anyone remember Nesbitts ankle being twisted on purpose by Georgia players after a play a few years back? It’s part of the game but don’t expect any head coach to fess up that his players are doing anything but playing as good sports. Most often, these acts are instigated by players who are trying for an advantage – without the coaches knowledge – and can include but are not limited to acts while in the pile after the play is over – such as biting, gouging, spitting and punching. To ask a coach about such acts is a waste of time – there will always be a denial. With regard to the helment issue – it’s not a stretch to remember in recent years that many many times during a game – Tech helments would be rolling around the field after the play. My suggestion – since this is school that is known for engineering – is to construct a strap design that makes it impossible for someone to remove it – player or opponent – without two hands – rather than by a quick swipe at a strap or pull on the back of the helment. After all, if the idea is that the helment is made for the purpose of staying on while playing – Riddell should insure that it does – and when that happens – this discussion will disappear from the blog.

GTOT, I don’t doubt that shady stuff goes on at the bottom of a pile. This reminds of this hilarious quote from Tampa Bay head coach on recovering fumbles:

“We also have our players perform the recover drill. In this drill, we stress three aspects: covering the points by surrounding the football; covering the ball in a fetal position so none of the brown part of the football shows; and, when they recover a fumble, we also ask our players to close their eyes, close their mouths, and squeeze their buttock cheeks.”

The 2nd time that Tevin’s helmet came off seemed to be just part of the play. The first time it came off the play had stopped with TW down and then a split second later the helmet came rolling a couple of yards deep into the end zone. THe only explanation that makes sense is that the hemlmet was pulled off.

WOW…….It happened to a RUNNING QB?
Most passing QBs will not lose their helmets because they are not in the PILE, but
There will be plenty of Running Backs losing their helmets in the RED ZONE.

Tevin RUNS the O and the Ball so he will have people trying to get his helmet off all season long.

The ACC REFS need to look at this. If Tevin has hit helmet come off in the MIAMI game i would say it is now a strategy and needs to be Flagged for a PERSONAL FOUL.

You are the reason that, at the times when race IS an issue, people don’t take it as seriously as they should. Because people like YOU try to make things about race when they are not. What “hit” Supersize? There was no hit. His legs got tangled up in a double team tackle. In order for this to be the calculated assault that Techies so desperately want to believe it was, the two UGA defenders would have to have had mind reading powers. There is no other way. The guy on bottom would have to send a message to the guy who had him wrapped up on top that said “I’ve got his legs now pull him back so we can twist his ankle.” Its just absurd. I’ve watched the play many times and think the guy who had him up top was just trying to make sure that he was down because he was still upright. It was just an unfortunate injury and injuries to your QB are going to happen when he runs the ball 20-30 times per game. He was also only out for a quarter giving the eventual ACC Champ Jackets plenty of time to finish off a hapless 6-5 Georgia team that had just lost to Kentucky. LMAO. If you want to see an intentional assault check out your center’s cheap shot on Deangelo Tyson that knocked him out of last year’s game.

Let’s review what Tech fans have whined about today:

1. Falling from No. 35 to No. 40 in the polls. That might be a classic.

2. Virginia “intentionally” ripping off Tevin Washington’s helmet.

3. Nesbitt’s 2009 injury vs. Georgia

Tech fans, would you like some cheese with your whine?

@ dwagfan…..read what UOAD posted. That pretty much sums up what happened. There WAS twisting of Nesbitt’s leg, whether you want to believe it or not. And, since you obviously did not even watch the Tech game Saturday, all I can say to you is that if you had, you would have seen pretty clear evidence that TW’s helmet WAS snatched off. That’s not whining though, because it really didn’t hurt Tech at all; we scored with Vad at QB on the very next play. What we are saying is that that kind of play needs to be penalized, because the snatching off of a helmet could possibly result in a worse injury than the helmet flying off during an otherwise legitimate hit. I am sure you would be saying the same thing had a FL At player snatched a helmet off a dwag during your game Saturday night. That would not be whining either; that would be calling for something to be done to penalize such dangerous play on the part of a defense.

51 — I was a smart tail about the helmet rule.
I think it was Jason Whitlock or another black sports writer that actually wrote a column saying that’s what the rule was about!! No joking on that.
Personally, I don’t like the rule, and I do think a schrewed Coach might use it the way I stated, which could be a problem. Currently, their is no grey area. If a player knocks it off intentionally, then the other player should not have to sit a play.

As for a mule, I wouldn’t be against one!! My neighbors might think differently!!

I was at the game and had a clear view of both plays at the goal line where Tevin’s helmet some off. On the first, a UVA player puts his hand on the base of the helmet at the back and pulls while Tevin is on the ground. On the second play the helmet appears to pop off from inadvertent contact as he is going down.
