Virginia coach Mike London refuted comments by Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington and coach Paul Johnson that Cavaliers players purposely removed Washington’s helmet at crucial moments of Saturday’s game to get him out of the game.
London spoke with Virginia reporters Sunday night on a teleconference.
“I don’t believe that,” he said. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes on there when you’re trying to gang tackle. Helmets come off all the time and there’s no one that’s trying to intentionally rip a guy’s helmet off to get him out of the game . . . During the game, during practice, we don’t advocate that. We don’t teach that. We didn’t even think about doing anything close to that.”

This is the dumbest rule ever. I also agree with the commentators from a game I watched over the weekend when they said “If a defensive player purposely pulls off a helmet, then they should have to sit out the next play too.” Someone is eventually gonna get hurt because of this rule, cause players are going to snatch helmets off.

Kinda funny too hot everyone is leaving out how Tech got penalized in the uga game when Nesbitts ankle got rolled. All because one of Techs linemen saw what was happening and picked the uga player up off Nesbitt and threw him to the ground, which resulted in a personal foul for defending his QB.

To the UVA coach, we have a term for your denial: double b*ll-sh*t. I was there and watching through binoculars. Tevin gets tackled near the goal line, is laying on the ground with the play over, and a UVA DB reaches down and pulls Tevin’s helmet off and flips it forward into the end zone. No way to say such is just part of the scrum.
The nonsense denial aside, this rule needs to be eliminated or they need to be watchful and call the defenders for face masking when the helmet comes off in the manner of Tevin’s. The problem with even that solution is that down near the goal line there isn’t much real estate to cover anyway, so the 15 yd penalty becomes a 1 or 2 yard penalty (if you even get caught), and there is not much downside to trying to get the starting QB out of the game and hope for a turnover by the backup who has to come in unexpectedly.

Actually, it was me who gave Virginia the idea to rip his helment off. I also tell Tevin to not give into a dumb rule and keep wearing it loose. I love this rule!

Gus, you might only get one or two yards instead of 15, but any personal foul by the defense results in a first down for the offense. That’s a pretty big deal when you’re deep in the red zone, so I’d say penalizing deliberate attempts to remove other players’ helmets would be a very effective solution.

I’ve always thought the NCAA is a bunch of inbred morons, but the helmet rule absolutely confirms it. In preseason I told folks that you will see this rule being used exactly the way we saw Saturday. It’s the easiest way in the world to make a teams star player sit out on a crucial down. You WILL see more of that as the season progresses, and if the NCAA doesn’t change the rule it’s only a matter of time until someone gets seriously hurt or worse. Of course defenses are going to use the rule to their advantage as long as it’s in place, and any Head Coach who denies that his defensive players would do anything like that is a bold-faced liar (or extremely naive and delusional, which isn’t likely at the collegiate level).
Anyway, Good game Jackets!! And tip of the hat to young Mr. Will Jackson on his award. Take down Miami this Saturday, and suddenly this season becomes VERY interesting indeed!!!

Nesbitt broke his arm making a tackle on the sideline, I think. Anyway, Washington’s helmet came flying out of a pile. Is the rule intended to make sure players have chinstraps buckled securely? There needs to be some equipment modifications if so. If a 4-point snap attachment doesn’t work, I don’t know what will.

Jarvis Jones from UGA had his helmet come off 32 times in 2011, as reported by an article recently published. 0 times this season, UGA trainers have found better ways of secruing the straps and the article also reported that Jones has tightened the straps up tighter so he won’t have to take a play off.
If Washington can’t find a way to keep his hat on he needs to sit out a play.
Any player caught chop blocking should have to sit out the remainder of the game.
if that ever comes to be, one team won’t have enough players to finish the game!

The intentional removing of a helmet will stop if the ncaa tells all teams that the new rule has an addendum as of now: If any player is caught intentionally removing or pulling a helmet off then that player is kicked out of the game. If it happens again in the same game by another player on the same team then that player and the head coach is kicked out of the game and the coach is suspended for the next game.

Why would UVA do that? If I were a Tech opponent I would most definitely want to keep Washington in the game. He lacks any explosiveness that is needed in an option QB. He is not slow, but not fast, he is decent passer, but not great. Vad Lee presents much higher upside (he scored and took a good hit and didn’t phase him) with only slightly more risk (wobbly pass). It would be dumb to try and get Tevin out of the game. If anything, I would go out of my way to keep the plodding QB’s helmet on and would suggest Tevin’s teammates purposely knocked off his helmet because they wanted to win.

Jarvis Jones head is so big and his helmet is so small he does not need straps sauteed. He probably uses a “helmet horn”. LOL again

Tech complaining about trying to hurt Nesbit? This is from a crowd that cut/chop blocks on every play. Sometimes it’s legal (if only one blockerer involved) and sometimes it’s not legal (if a second blocker is involved). Legal or not, the point is that this is a potential injury waiting to happen on EVERY play for the defense.

In all the years I played football I never lost my helmet once. I can only remember a few times anyone else on the field did, too. Of course we weren’t wearing our helmets intentionally loose to protect our ‘doos’ either. Get the right size helmet, tighten up your chkinstraps and play football how about it!

Trying to remove the helmet of a certain player for a critical down will OBVIOUSLY be a strategy all year long – and it doesn’t really matter if a coach advocates it or not. This will happen because that is the rule. Until the rule is changed, it will become part of college ball.

@my leg hurts –
You really do need to educate yourself a lot on football. What GA Tech does regarding blocking does not/should not cause any injury – that is why it is legal.
Also, an injury of a player could occur on any given play.

For those of you suggesting I didn’t watch the game…I did. The fact Tevin played reasonably well, no impact on me. I am taking the whole enchilada view and I am not at all impressed by slow option QBs with little wiggle or agility. His passing is adequate (not great, but solid for an option QB).
Lets put some of his success at the feet of UVA…they were flat awful on defense.
If Tevin can do that against a decent team or two, I will eat crow, but so far, he has bombed big time against decent teams or better. He looks good against sloppy, poor-tackling defenses.
The triple option teams of GSU and Navy were at their best with FAST QBs that could break off a long TD run every time they took the snap. Washington gets caught from behind by average LBs, that is just sad, sorry.

At some point in the Season, big game game will be decided when a defensive player is instructed by his coach to “remove” a QBs helmet, therefore causing the QB to sit out a critical play.
