Georgia Tech quoteboard

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson

Opening statement:

“It was a heck of a game. I’m proud of our guys. I thought both offensively and defensively we played well, especially from the start. We had some hiccups special-teams wise—it seemed like old times for a while. We challenged our guys this week and they accepted the challenge. I had a long memory from last year [a 24-21 loss at Virginia] and I think they did, too.”

On how he challenged his players:

“When you lose, if you care, it ought to bother you. I heard a long time ago, ‘Revenge is a great motivator for those that care.’ So they cared. We were embarrassed the way we played up there last year.”

On if he’s pleased with the way the team responded after losing opener at Virginia Tech:

“I don’t think there was any other way to respond. We were disappointed we lost that game. We had opportunities and we didn’t get it gone. We didn’t play very well. Probably didn’t coach very well. We got ourselves in a hole and we have to dig out one week at a time.”

Virginia coach Mike London

On what he tells his team after a defeat like this:

“It’s a humbling experience wen you come in and get beat like that. When you don’t execute well on defense or offense, things like that happen. There’s a lot to look at. We’re not going to point fingers or blame anybody. That’s a good football team. They ran their style of offense and they came out ready to play.”

Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington

On if Virginia’s players were trying to pull off his helmet so he had to come out of the game:

“A couple times I got stood up and they took my helmet off. I really don’t like that rule, coming out. But they got me twice on that.”

On his 60-yard run:

“My ‘pitch key,’ he went between like he was going to knock the pitch down so I went up field. I got some good blocking down field.”

Georgia Tech cornerback Louis Young

On how much the loss at Virginia motivated the team during preparations for the rematch:

“For me, personally, I had a bad taste in my mouth still from that game. This offseason and the preparation getting ready for this game, I knew it was going to be a dogfight and I wanted us to be the team this year to get a TKO punch. We actually watched a fight last night, an old Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns fight. That got me excited for the game and in the mindset for a dogfight. We knocked them down and had them on the ropes.”

Georgia Tech A-back Orwin Smith

On his 77-yard touchdown run:

“I came in motion, and as soon as I caught the pitch I saw Robbie Godhigh with a tremendous block. I saw Jeff [Greene] on the cornerback [blocking] and all I could think about was, ‘Jeff, don’t turn around.’ Because sometimes when the receivers hear the fans they slow down and look back. He said all he knew was I was behind him running. He made a great play to shield off the corner.

I had no doubts whatsoever that the Jackets would win today, but even in my wildest imagination, I never expected that. It was awesome and it proved once again that when the TO offense clicks, it is a work of art. I LOVE Paul Johnson and the Ga Tech Yellow Jackets !!!

Er, uh, maybe we ought to keep this high school offense a while longer….I mean 60 yards and a cloud of dust ain’t terrible.

But equal kudos to the D. In my day, a long time ago and far far away, other teams didn’t like to play Tech because they knew that at the end of the day they would have earned anything they got the hard way. We’re Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Usually this is one of those ACC rivalry games that are relatively close. I don’t recall a blow out this bad against UVA. At any rate, thank you Jackets for your awesome play this week.
The key definitely was that first play on offense. Great play and it made UVA aware that our passing offense can not be neglected. Likely opened up bigger lanes and spaces for our ground game since our passing game can not be totally neglected.

I liked the tweet from Jeff Shultz after we scored the second touchdown. “The Jackets offense is slowing down, it took them two plays to score that time”. Great game Jackets, enjoy your Sunday and get ready for Miami. Go after them with the same mindset.

VT is still ahead of us in the coastal standings and this week is no time to stumble.

Very nice of Big O to acknowledge his teammates’ efforts. He is FAST.

A good day for the Jackets. Tevin Washington deserves a lot of credit for executing his offense precisely. And, Vad Lee reminded me of a young Joe Hamilton, not quite ready but a dangerous playmaker. Defensively, very quick to the ball, better tackling and good coverage. Louis Young makes a difference.

Had stuff to do so I taped the game and watched it later. Very nice execution on a number of them. Tevin deserves a lot of credit with his passes and ball handling. In the 2nd quarter the first score by Vad when Tevin lost his helmet and had to leave the game was instructive to me. He bulled his way into the endzone and really showed his strength.

Hope we beat the U next week as convincingly. I ache that we did not win at VT.

I guess the bookies knew something after all!

This definitely helps to erase last year’s result. Hopefully we build on it and continue to show dominance as the season progresses (we’ll need it for the.Noles in the CG!)

I have 2 memories of games with UVA that top this one. Of course when we topped them when they were No. 1 in 1990 and then again with Joe Hamilton at the helm one year when he led an incredible comeback. I think we were down 38-17 before storming back to win (not sure of the final score). That was an awesome game.

I might have to start giving Groh some credit. Until this year, he hasn’t deserved it, but the way the D has been playing….

THIS IS FOR THE A-BACK COACH Lamar Owens .Whats the deal with u and certain players u let get touches and they fumbles multiples times and u still let them get carries. That number 7 is pretty good and fast.I can recall two years ago he fumble the ball and he he didnt get in the game anymore .Whats your problem dude everybody”s talking about that, is it personal? Let the man get fair touches
