When could Tech play Notre Dame?

Some quick Notre Dame scheduling notes:

Notre Dame will play five ACC opponents a year and will rotate through the league. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the plan is to start in 2014. The school will give the ACC five open dates and the league will fill the dates as part of its formation of the league schedule.

The tentative plan is to have Notre Dame play each school every three years, home and road.

In 2014, Tech is scheduled to play Wofford, at Tulane and at Georgia out of conference. In 2015, there are three home games with Georgia Southern, Tulane and Georgia. In 2016, Tech has Vanderbilt at home, Georgia on the road and an open date.

Contracts with schools can always be bought out or pushed back.

This puts a slight crimp into Tech’s scheduling philosophy of scheduling one FCS opponent and one FBS opponent from a non-automatic qualifier conference, although the 2016 schedule, for instance, already goes against that strategy.

Notre Dame has scheduled games with Syracuse for 2014 thru 2017. Syracuse home games in ‘14 & ‘16 are in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (Giants and Jets home field). Syracuse joins the ACC next year.

In order to add some quality to the home slate, make sure Notre Dame is scheduled to play at Grant Field on odd years.

Yabba, Dabba, Do… We will kick their pompus ass back to Indiana they way we did back in 2007. ND is easily the most overrated program in college football. Coach Johnson is 1-5 against ND while coaching at Navy beating them in 3OT in 2007 46-44. You know he wants another chance to make some Irish Stew.
Go Jackets, Beat Virginia.

ray gunkel: Wouldn’t you want them to be scheduled on even years? We already have Clemson, VT, and UGA at home for odd years. Plus, when we add Pitt and Cuse, they may restructure our ACC schedule a bit.

It sure would be nice to make that 33-6 series record less lopsided. It is good they are overrated. When we beat them it will help on the national stage, recruiting and rankings wise.

Good riddance to playing FCS teams. You can’t get better by playing below your level. Practice in the Spring and Summer! Great news!

My two favorite teams are Georgia Tech and whoever is playing Notre Dame. I want to beat UGA, but outside of the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I want them to win.
The glitter is gone from Notre Dame’s dome. They used to be the darlings of the media. After Tech beat them in 1976, Notre Dame stomped Tech the next year, running up the score to a 69-14 win with Dan Devine shaking his fist at the Tech sidelines.
When Miami stomped Notre Dame several years later, the media was all aghast they would run up the score. No mention of when Notre Dame did the same to Tech. Ever since then, I have wanted Notre Dame to lose every football game. Still do.

Anyone recall the Notre Dame game in 1980 when Ken Whisenhunt – who played tight end for GT – went in to QB for Mike Kelly when he got hurt and the game ended in a 3 – 3 tie knocking Notre Dame out of the #1 position in the polls?

Lets hope addition of Pitt, Syracuse and ND (for 5 games) will allow the ACC to finally redo the GT schedule. Having VT, Clemson and UGA all on the road the same year is too tough. Need to split those 3 up somehow. Maybe this will allow them to make our schedule more even one year to the other.

GT old timer I do. I had my parents in town for the game and we had a blast! That was a great one. But I was also there the year the whiskey bottles flew out from the upper deck and the refs took both teams to the center of the field for 20 minutes and Sports Illustrated wrote about it the next week. That call was horrible!!!

I remember when we beat them 3-3 (leading 3-0 in the 4th) giving UGA the National Championsip. As much as I dislike Notre Dame, I hate giving the Dawgs the NC.

GT to Notre Dame…”Spank me Baby”. Notre Dame is playing you guys.

The ACC is SOOOO excited about the entry of Notre Dame into their lesser sports. Notre Dame will just siphon off those BB revenues. I hope Notre Dame will at least give you dweebs a kiss.

GT is always blind to reality…It’s amazing, you can’t make this stuff up

Ga Tech Old Timer – I was actually at that game and watched the 3-3 tie. Great game as Ga Tech never quit and played hard on every play. What’s funny is right after the game, I remember watching on a small TV, Lindsay Scotts famous TD catch as GA beat Fl. It was a great day of football for the state of GA.

Also, I remember being at the game where ND was killing GT and the fans started throwing mackrel at the ND football team, which eventually led to whisky bottles, etc. ND ran to the middle of the field until the police got control. That was interesting day to say the least.

okiedawg – thanks. because they could. swofford didn’t have enough cards to force notre dame to join for football.
in some ways, it almost seems like the acc would be better off having notre dame stay independent, though. i’m not sure that notre dame, if it’s not playing usc and michigan annually, as well as navy, and playing a national schedule, is really notre dame. i don’t say this to stick up for the acc – they would have far preferred to have notre dame join fully – but i wonder if the “brand” (i don’t like that word) would suffer if it joined a conference, and acc would suffer accordingly.

Ken….That makes good sense. I think Notre Dame will protect their football “brand image” against all conferences…Including the SEC. And they have visions of grandeur, ie, they return to dominance and recruit like crazy; thereby, going to a BCS bowl game each year. This will result in not having to split the BCS Bowl apperance MONEY…WINNING!
