I’m still getting notes together from the Tuesday news conference, but thought I’d give you Paul Johnson’s full responses to a couple questions about Vad Lee. Here ya go.
Q: Will Lee play against Virginia?
A: We’ll see. I’m going to try to play him some. I’m not going to commit myself to saying he’s going to be in the second series or third series or whatever. I’ll play by feel, to some degree. Vad and I will know that. Nobody else will. I think he did some positive things. He’s got great upside. He’d be the first to tell you, as I said yesterday, that he’s got a lot of things to work on.
The thing that’s remarkable, because of the position, the most popular guy on the team is always the backup quarterback Once Vad plays for a while, it’ll probably be Justin (Thomas). Everywhere I’ve coached, that’s just the way it is. Anthony Harrell went in at linebacker and knocked the snot out of some people and caused two fumbles and nobody’s wanting to know if he’s gong to play again. Trey Braun went in and played offensive guard and did really well, but nobody’s wondering when he’s going to play again.
It’s the nature of the position. But he’s got ability, and we’re going to try to bring him along and not throw him to the lions. He’s still a redshirt freshman. He’s still got a long time to be here and a long time to learn but we’re excited about where he is.
Q: So is he the backup?
A: Situational. It would depend on the situation. Synjyn (Days) is playing A-back mostly in practice, but he’ll still spend some time at quarterback depending on what you’re trying to do and what gives you the best chance. It’s hopeful that as we move along, [Lee] will progress himself to the point that you feel good about him in that situation, could possibly progress to the point where he’s playing all the time some. I don’t know that he will beat the other guy (Tevin Washington) out this year, but there could be a situation where , if he progresses and continues to get better, that we could play with both of them some.
My interpretation: Lee will be brought along slowly and may play in some games, but probably not all. If he continues to progress, he could possibly take up some of Washington’s snaps. I’m not sure what “all the time some” means. I took it as a malapropism.
My Anthony Harrell blog will be up next. (Kidding)

I think CPJ will bring Vad along quite nicely
CPJ knows what he seeing at practice and on video so he has the best feel of where Vad is in his progess. There is no doubt of the physical talent in this young man and I sit back to look forward to the memorable games he’s going to produce for the Yellow Jackets.

Great comment about the backup qb being the most popular guy on the team. Really like the character of all three qbs, they all seem to be a credit to our school – PJ doesn’t need to worry about them getting in trouble on a Saturday night. Hopefully Tevin will mentor Vad along.
Also impressed with Harrell, don’t remember much about his recruitment though.

Michael, sounds like you are no expert on finances, either…knock on Days has always been fumbleitis, 2 types of ball carriers, one clutches the ball for dear life when they feel contact, “better to have died as a small child”-i have been watching football longer than CPJ has lived, & i would hate to think i wasted all that time (& $) to just blindly believe what the coaches said, or i would not have queried a lot of what Boss Ross’ successor did(not that he had much success), blind loyalty is more the former…

The huge waste in all of this is Days.
He should be playing Strong Safety or Free safety, he has the size the physicality and the athleticism, he is being wasted at QB/AB because at QB his throwing is huge liability and at A-Backs he won’t get enough touches to justify wasting his size-speed combo at that position.
There’s a good reason that ALL of Days’ offers out of HS were at Safety EXCEPT for GT & Toledo!
This is more proof that CPJ doesn’t do a good job at evaluating players out of HS and then putting them in the right position on the depth chart where they can be most productive for GT FB.
Days is too good of an athlete for him to have have produced so little for GT FB, he’s in his 3rd yr. out of HS (RS-soph.) and has nothing other than mop-up duty.

I just hope the way Vad is put into games is vastly different than the way Chan integrated Josh Nesbitt into the offense in 2007. It’s upsetting to think that he wasted a year of eligibility so that he could run a Wildcat formation in several games for a few series and, in addition to toting 53 carries, throw the ball 5-13 for 1 TD and 2 INT (including a horrible overthrow on that Thursday night game against VT). Hmmm, seems Josh Nesbitt’s 38% completion occurred in a more “traditional” offense as well…HAHA.
Vad needs reps running the regular offense, not specialty packages that are not going to help him be any more ready for taking the offense over in 2013.

i think juvenal was poking fun at your handle.
chas_jacket – i suspect that you may be right about the depth chart, even if it’s unspoken. the thing with days’ fumble/non-fumble is that, yes, it probably should have been a touchdown, but, had it been on the 10-yard line, it would have been a fumble.
i don’t see a reason why thomas, barring a slew of injuries, would play this year. i asked johnson awhile ago if he could foresee a non-quarterbacking role for thomas this year and he was not behind it.
juvenal – with these questions, at least, charles odum of the associated press gets the credit.

Ken,
If CPJ put Justin Thomas in to return kicks or play A-Back then why did he leave Bama to come to Tech, right? He’ll get his shot at QB and for that to make sense they need him to redshirt so he and Vad are in different years.

Great post, Ken.
Paul Johnson is very insightful and generally tells you what he thinks (except for revealing info that would help the opponents). This quote is exceptional:

Everywhere I’ve coached, that’s just the way it is. @fuzzybee – just because some idiot keeps repeating himself doesn’t make him right.
Any talk about Days at safety is retarded. Tech’s defensive secondary is better and deeper than it has ever been. That’s EVER as in forever. Days would not see the field. Earlier talk of lack of depth at safety position is hogwash as 3 CBs could easily move to safety.
The single proponent of the Days at safety “whine-fest” on this blog is someone who has an established track record of using hindsight to discredit Paul Johnson whenever possible and in most cases slants the facts and is far too myopic to understand the complexities of a unique college football program.

@Michael Veli I thought we should be buying gold? Any free financial advice is welcomed.
I hope we see a few series with Vad in the game every game. He brings a different skill and yes he’s raw, but he’s also a playmaker—he scrambles as well as Days and throws well. I’m sorta in agreement with FL Jacket—-he needs to run plays from the offense, but if he excels from the pistol (as an example), then let him contribute where he best helps the team.
Good news and congrats to Harrell—we need headhunting LBs. Didn’t notice he was the one bringing the lumber on those caused fumbles. I think the talent on our D is getting stronger. Despite the opinion of other bloggers, I think the trend on our personnel is improving.

@crackbaby: I too guffawed at WnE’s suggestion to move Days to DB. It’s true he was recruited for that spot by other teams, he played it in HS and he has the athletic ability to play there, but Days is still the number 2 QB or # 2.5 QB. He’s an offensive playmaker and that’s a higher value than a DB. As you pointed out, he wouldn’t start in our secondary. I guess we could have him as a utility player, playing everything—QB, A-back, special teams and DB in nickel packages, but how thin do you want to stretch him. Now, if he continues to put the ball on the ground, then move him next year, but I have confidence that he will do better with his ball handling in the future.

@Crackbaby and Yellar–
The point I believe we all agree on is that Days is moving to #3 QB going forward so it seems. Add JT in the mix come spring and he is still #3 at best. He’s to good an athlete not to be on the field.
Im not so sure about the debth at safety ie VT game. Who knows how good SD could be. Also, neither of us were privileged to the conversation between SD and his parents about his chance to play QB at GT. He may have gone elsewhere if not offered the opportunity? I dont have an axe to grind with CPJ decision making.
Yellar, I dont believe SD can practice both O and D, very few athletes can. Going forward from here the question is where will he do GT the most good. For this season its A back, the more the better IMO. Next year depends on who shakes out at A. Today, SD has the size and athletic ability to play safety in college and maybe on Sunday. Not sure he goes to the NFL as an RB. The good thing is, if he graduates, his future is bright either way:)

Yeller bug: I think that with over 16 trillion in domestic and foreign debt and with inflation already among us in the form of higher gas prices, food prices, lower wages, etc. that an economic bombshell is a mathmatical cerainity and not just a possibillity. The big question is will it be deflation or inflation(i assume the latter unless foreign countries start investing in the dollar heavily which is unlikely in the SHORT term.) I believe in investing in gold and silver at this present time but keep in mind that they are just bubbles and have very little actual and functual worth outside of people buying for physcological reasons of comfort. @Michael Veli: Well I find it interesting and quite scary as I agree—it’s not a matter of if, but when and how bad. Are you buying physical gold & silver or stocks or ETFs? It is somewhat relevant to GT football—for an economic collapse of the US economy where the Dow drops to about 3000 and unemployment shoots to 40% or higher then that would have an impact on attendance would it not? Tech has sold bonds to pay for our new basketball arena and that could default (I own some of those bonds so I have a vested interest)—granted this is not the forum for a detailed discussion, but if you attend the games, I’d be a pleasure to have you stop by for a brew and BBQ at our tailgating site and hear your thoughts.
As for our current team—invest time in Vad—he’s our future for whatever future we have left. For Arob: A new TO wrinkle—pistol formation with Vad at QB and Days at right A-back–Days initiates motion–Vad takes snap can handoff to Days who continues running off left tackle with Laskey or Snoddy trailing for the pitch or Vad keeps looks for slant pass to WR on left (away from motion) or does a QB draw up the middle—the QO (Quad OPtion).

Vad Lee is the real deal. Anyone who has seen a Tech scrimmage in the last year knows there is something special about Vad. I think Coach Johnson is smart to bring him along slowly this year, but there may be a question as to what is too slowly at some point. Tevin is tough, a leader, a senior, and he deserves to be the starter at this point. Tech is lucky to have such talent in the wings, especially with Justin Thomas being redshirted. The future is very bright for the Yellow Jackets. We want to win now, but 2012 may be the year for a little more patience as this is still a young team. 2013, look out!

In case y’all haven’t heard, Notre Dame is joining the ACC as a full member in all sports except football. In football they will still play 5 ACC teams a year, even though they will not compete for the conference crown. BIG NEWS !!!!

@ greg…..I sure hope so, but remember they have those traditional rivalry games with USC, Mich, Mich State, and Purdue, so it won’t be easy

well on the ajc front page it says this
The Irish and Jackets last met on any field in 2007, and it may still be a while as Notre Dame will only play four ACC teams in football.
Then in the article it says 5. I guess 5 is correct.

Loose big games with a ton of upside (Vad Lee), or loose big games the same way tech lost them last year and this year (Tevin Washington). CPJ, seems to have made his decision. I would take Vad Lee and loose by 30 rather than Tevin loosing by 3!

vad will go nowhere vis the nfl. he plays the to. no tech qb will go anywhere in the nfl. they don’t learn and play the pro-set. he’ll be a good to average college qb. that is all.

It’s simple, fans are not excited and the team want be much better than a year ago! Just put some of these “talented” players on the field, in some meaningful games, and let’s see what they can do. Auburn and Texas A&M they are doing it, why not tech?

Cliff.mcgee,
I always want the best chance of winning. If you are telling me the likely outcome of our big games in lose by 3 with Tevin or lose by 30 with Vad Lee, then I am going with Tevin every time. And the reasoning is simple and based in probability and statistics. Since NO ONE can predict the future, a likely outcome with Tevin is based on a range of possibilities that includes some of the scenarios WINNING the “BIG” games you suggest. A likely outcome with Vad Lee does not include very many scenarios of winning (if the likely outcome is indeed losing by 30). So then Tevin clearly gives us the best chance to WIN!

I was at the spring game and Vad Lee was not ready to start. I was at the last game and Vad looked great. But Tevin looked great the first 6 games last year as well. I am not a Tevin Washington believer and think both Vad and Days offer more upside and in fact I think there are down sides to Tevin. Specifically on 4th and short as well as other specifics. That being said, I agree with the coach “bringing along” Vad lee. It will allow him to develop with out too much pressure and possible have him ready to be the face of the program by the middle or end of this year or beginning next year. If Vad can get 4 or 5 series in against Virginia we will really know how ready he is and my opinion as well as CPJ opinion may change.

After watching TW go no where for three and a half quarters vs UGA last year S.Days came in the game and started moving the ball down the field and time expired. Same thing happened at VaTech. Only Day’s was given no chance. What is the coaches rational? I think he’s so afraid he might be so wrong, he can’t stand it.

@yeller bug, the play you’re describing is pretty much the bread and butter of the Oregon offense – basically a triple option but with the threat of a read play action pass thrown in there. If you’ve looked at Scoregon’s stat sheet, it’s pretty much lethal. Of course, they have other plays, just like we have the TO and several other plays. But, it’s a big part of the O.

I haven’t seen much of that pitch to the trailing back that goes for30-50 yards yet this year. Could it be because of POOR TO NO BLOCKING on the perimeter.? Got to have blocking down field.

Iowa’s throwback unis looked great against IS on Sat. Those go back to the teens and 20’s, looked good to me. Esp. with the white block #’s.

Time to play Vad Lee.
Chances of winning the Coastal are poor, and it’s clear that TW can’t find the offensive production we had with Nesbitt.
Vad Lee needs to be under center.
