CPJ offers more insight on QB depth

I’m still getting notes together from the Tuesday news conference, but thought I’d give you Paul Johnson’s full responses to a couple questions about Vad Lee. Here ya go.

Q: Will Lee play against Virginia?

A: We’ll see. I’m going to try to play him some. I’m not going to commit myself to saying he’s going to be in the second series or third series or whatever. I’ll play by feel, to some degree. Vad and I will know that. Nobody else will. I think he did some positive things. He’s got great upside. He’d be the first to tell you, as I said yesterday, that he’s got a lot of things to work on.

The thing that’s remarkable, because of the position, the most popular guy on the team is always the backup quarterback Once Vad plays for a while, it’ll probably be Justin (Thomas). Everywhere I’ve coached, that’s just the way it is. Anthony Harrell went in at linebacker and knocked the snot out of some people and caused two fumbles and nobody’s wanting to know if he’s gong to play again. Trey Braun went in and played offensive guard and did really well, but nobody’s wondering when he’s going to play again.

It’s the nature of the position. But he’s  got ability, and we’re going to try to bring him along and not throw him to the lions. He’s still a redshirt freshman. He’s still got a long time to be here and a long time to learn but we’re excited about where he is.

Q: So is he the backup?

A: Situational. It would depend on the situation. Synjyn (Days) is playing A-back mostly in practice, but he’ll still spend some time at quarterback depending on what you’re trying to do and what gives you the best chance. It’s hopeful that as we move along, [Lee] will progress himself to the point that you feel good about him in that situation, could possibly progress to the point where he’s playing all the time some. I don’t know that he will beat the other guy (Tevin Washington) out this year, but there could be a situation where , if he progresses and continues to get better, that we could play with both of them some.

My interpretation: Lee will be brought along slowly and may play in some games, but probably not all. If he continues to progress, he could possibly take up some of Washington’s snaps. I’m not sure what “all the time some” means. I took it as a malapropism.

My Anthony Harrell blog will be up next. (Kidding)

Paul in NH: Employers and companies paying less in the form of wages and benefits hurts when prices are up, especially gas prices and food but i didn’t mean that inflation causes low wages as inflation can actually raise wages somewhat. My mistake! Who is Paul S.? never heard of him

@Michael Veli: Well I find it interesting and quite scary as I agree—it’s not a matter of if, but when and how bad. Are you buying physical gold & silver or stocks or ETFs? It is somewhat relevant to GT football—for an economic collapse of the US economy where the Dow drops to about 3000 and unemployment shoots to 40% or higher then that would have an impact on attendance would it not? Tech has sold bonds to pay for our new basketball arena and that could default (I own some of those bonds so I have a vested interest)—granted this is not the forum for a detailed discussion, but if you attend the games, I’d be a pleasure to have you stop by for a brew and BBQ at our tailgating site and hear your thoughts.

As for our current team—invest time in Vad—he’s our future for whatever future we have left. For Arob: A new TO wrinkle—pistol formation with Vad at QB and Days at right A-back–Days initiates motion–Vad takes snap can handoff to Days who continues running off left tackle with Laskey or Snoddy trailing for the pitch or Vad keeps looks for slant pass to WR on left (away from motion) or does a QB draw up the middle—the QO (Quad OPtion).

Vad Lee is the real deal. Anyone who has seen a Tech scrimmage in the last year knows there is something special about Vad. I think Coach Johnson is smart to bring him along slowly this year, but there may be a question as to what is too slowly at some point. Tevin is tough, a leader, a senior, and he deserves to be the starter at this point. Tech is lucky to have such talent in the wings, especially with Justin Thomas being redshirted. The future is very bright for the Yellow Jackets. We want to win now, but 2012 may be the year for a little more patience as this is still a young team. 2013, look out!

I was joking about Paul Samuelson, he studied at M.I.T. but died some time back but im sure his articles are ran since he was a genius, reminds me of John Nash somewhat. Anyway, i have nothing in E.T.F.s or stocks whatsoever, just gold, silver, diamonds, inventory, and some commercial real estate that my businesses are on but i try to stay very mobile as far as assets. I like the fact that you support Tech, i don’t even want to entertain the thought of 40 percent unemployement as it would almost certainly lead to massive civil unrest and anarchy. It would be cool to meet you, i’ll be there this saturday with my daughter.

I do think that Vad Lee is going to be good but don’t forget about Justin Thomas! With a redshirt year and 20 pounds of muscle added on he could be tough to catch, i think we are building for the future!

Drop me an email to supersizeorder@yahoo.com and offer some kind of “proof” that you are the same one posting here, and I will give you my real email address and add you to the list. I plan on at least stopping by yeller bug’s tailgate spot again this Saturday (I met him for the first time before the Pres game); the ribs are GOOD !!!! lol

Synjyn to defense is the right answer. We are just wasting another year of his eligibility having him stand on the sideline. He will never be a QB at Tech or anywhere else. He just can not be trusted with the ball in his hands. The gentleman who made this suggestion earlier is not alone in his thinking on this topic. True Freshman, Redshirt Freshman and now Redshirt Sophomore the sands are flowing through the hour glass.

I didn’t know Paul S. died—haven’t read newsweek in years. Hope you can stop by this weekend—Super has the details.

As for the UVA game—is it bad form to bet on UVA as a Tech fan? I’m confident that we’ll win, but I don’t see us winning by 10+. We’re not clicking on all cylinders on our offense. We had several runs for a loss against PC, some blown up plays…there’s work to do. I foresee some ugly wins these next two weeks for Tech—but an ugly win is better than a beautiful loss.

Ken,

Regarding CPJ’s QB answer: I got it: “Playing all the time some”, means that his playing time won’t be situational, rather, his playing time will be awarded regardless of the situation. The some part means that he will share time with Washington.
I love the CPJ 2nd team QB most popular guy on the team statement.

With the usual exception of WnE,a decent board today. The coaches see hundreds of reps. We see but a few. Synjyn Days will be a force at Tech. Let the coaches bring him along. Few of our ghoster posters understand the importance of blocking by A-Backs and Wide Receivers in our offense. The commentators don’t commment, the posters don’t post, the 5_star univerase does not expand, but the coaches see it, most of our reclining geniuses don’t. As SD get’s to be a better blocker, he will play more A-Back.

Loose big games with a ton of upside (Vad Lee), or loose big games the same way tech lost them last year and this year (Tevin Washington). CPJ, seems to have made his decision. I would take Vad Lee and loose by 30 rather than Tevin loosing by 3!

It’s simple, fans are not excited and the team want be much better than a year ago! Just put some of these “talented” players on the field, in some meaningful games, and let’s see what they can do. Auburn and Texas A&M they are doing it, why not tech?

Cliff.mcgee,
I always want the best chance of winning. If you are telling me the likely outcome of our big games in lose by 3 with Tevin or lose by 30 with Vad Lee, then I am going with Tevin every time. And the reasoning is simple and based in probability and statistics. Since NO ONE can predict the future, a likely outcome with Tevin is based on a range of possibilities that includes some of the scenarios WINNING the “BIG” games you suggest. A likely outcome with Vad Lee does not include very many scenarios of winning (if the likely outcome is indeed losing by 30). So then Tevin clearly gives us the best chance to WIN!

I was at the spring game and Vad Lee was not ready to start. I was at the last game and Vad looked great. But Tevin looked great the first 6 games last year as well. I am not a Tevin Washington believer and think both Vad and Days offer more upside and in fact I think there are down sides to Tevin. Specifically on 4th and short as well as other specifics. That being said, I agree with the coach “bringing along” Vad lee. It will allow him to develop with out too much pressure and possible have him ready to be the face of the program by the middle or end of this year or beginning next year. If Vad can get 4 or 5 series in against Virginia we will really know how ready he is and my opinion as well as CPJ opinion may change.

After watching TW go no where for three and a half quarters vs UGA last year S.Days came in the game and started moving the ball down the field and time expired. Same thing happened at VaTech. Only Day’s was given no chance. What is the coaches rational? I think he’s so afraid he might be so wrong, he can’t stand it.

@yeller bug, the play you’re describing is pretty much the bread and butter of the Oregon offense – basically a triple option but with the threat of a read play action pass thrown in there. If you’ve looked at Scoregon’s stat sheet, it’s pretty much lethal. Of course, they have other plays, just like we have the TO and several other plays. But, it’s a big part of the O.

Chances of winning the Coastal are poor, and it’s clear that TW can’t find the offensive production we had with Nesbitt.

Vad Lee needs to be under center.
