Vad Lee shines off bench for Georgia Tech

From Michael Cunningham

Once Vad Lee got his chance to play it didn’t take long for him to show why he was a prized quarterback recruit for Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson.

Lee led the barrage of big plays against Presbyterian College Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The sophomore tossed an 82-yard touchdown pass and also ran for 101 yards with a touchdown in Tech’s 59-3 victory.

Lee’s big night came against an outmatched foe. Then again, Lee hadn’t played in an official game since leading Hillside High School to a 16-0 record and earning the AP North Carolina player of the year in 2010.

“I am just happy to have the opportunity to be here and make big plays and showcase my abilities,” Lee said.

Lee was a redshirt in 2011 and didn’t play during Tech’s season-opening defeat at Virginia Tech. His debut got off to a shaky start in the first quarter but it wasn’t Lee’s fault.

Jeremy Moore dropped Lee’s first collegiate pass and Orwin Smith bobbled the second during a three-and-out series. Lee scored on a one-year touchdown run in the third quarter but didn’t figure to get many chances to pass when he came back in with Tech leading 38-0 and starting inside its 20.

But on third down Lee dropped back and floated a soft spiral to Jeff Greene, who fought through contact from two defenders and corralled Lee’s pass near the 50-yard line.

“I seen Jeff collide with the corner and I knew Jeff would get off of him,” Lee said. “I just wanted to throw it up and lead him a little bit and give him time to go get it and make a play.”

The 82-yard TD pass was the sixth-longest pass play in Tech history. Lee wasn’t done setting records, though his second mark wasn’t what he had in mind.

On Tech’s next possession he bobbled a high shotgun snap but recovered and took off running on a QB draw. He drew clear and looked to be headed for his second rushing touchdown but was tripped up two yards short of the end zone by Presbyterian’s Brandon Leston.

Lee said his teammates ribbed him for getting caught from behind. After the game, both Tech coach Paul Johnson and athletic director Dan Radakovich told Lee his 79-yard run was the longest non-scoring run in school history.

“I did not want that record,” Lee said. “That was tough. We’ve got film on Monday and hopefully we will watch it and then it will be washed out of everyone’s mind.”

The more lasting memories will be Lee’s big plays in his first game for the Yellow Jackets.

In mismatches like this it is just nice to know no one, as far as I know, got injured. When the ADs at schools like PC cash their checks do they ever put aside some for long term disability in the event one of their 195 lbs lineman can’t walk again. Come on y’all how much do we really learn from games like this?

Now we have two guys at a key position. That’s a good place to be. Vad was poised, smooth, and very athletic. Paul Johnson is bringing him along as he should. Tevin still has some good football ahead of him, but you have to think that Vad will play a bigger roll. LOTS of young guys looked really good and moving up the depth chart. Best depth we’ve had in years.

@yellow britches … I would submit that we learned some things about the defense, especially when they didn’t allow a score when PC had multiple shots inside our 5 yard line. I left with about 2:00 – 3:00 left to go in the game, so I’m not sure how PC got a field goal. But it was nice to know that our defense played better against our “cupcake” opponent the either the UGA or UF defenses did against THEIR cupcakes. Beyond that, we saw that this team does have the talent, ability, and desire to put away out-manned opponents. There have been MANY times in Tech history when that wasn’t the case.

For many years Clemson played exclusively in Atlanta. Frank Howard the Clremson coach at the time always said he would rather cash a big check than a little on and play at home. Small teams get money and exposure to help the program and I will bet the boys wanted to test themselves against a better program.

I think bigger teams build confidence and hone timing skills with games like this.

It is a time honored college football tradition to play an easy team to start the season.

Lee is a RS Freshman, not a Sophmore. At this point, Lee probably needs to somehhow take about fifty percent of the snaps to get ready for next year. We have (16) starters coming back, and if we have an game tested Lee to go with this group, along with a favorable home/away schedule, 2013 could be pretty special.

I was at the game and Lee did some things very well. He did not run the tripple option as well as Days and Washington however he can throw better than the other two combined.
I’m going to make and observation here
Washington is very much like Reggie Ball. He plays well enough to keep running him out there however when the game is on the line he will find a way not to win it. As a starther the only good team he has beat was Clemson. Every other game that really mattered he was the loosing QB. When Nesbith,Hamlton, Jones and others were playing when the game was close and the game was on the line those guys willed the team to wins. Washington just does not show me that. Staying with Reggie Ball got Gailey fired. I hope Coach Johnson does not make the same mistake. Take Lee teach him the option where he can run it in his sleep and stick with him. Lee is an athlete and a winner. I know you see them each day coach however when you turn the lights on some people just tend to play better. Anyway GO JACKETS we have a very big game this week.

I agree with the Washington to Ball comparison.
I think Vad should be the man this year and right now. Could he make any worse mistake than to throw an interception on third down in OT in the biggest game of the season. I say let Vad get familar with the O this year so next year is very special. Washington is okay and would be a good backup QB on any team.

Little unfair to equate Tevin to Reggie Ball. Reggie had a primadonna attitude without ever earning it. Tevin is a better person and works hard. He’s earned my respect. Regarding the PC field goal: GT had put in the 3rd string D by then. They let PC break a long run with 1:00 to go which set up the FG. The D did manage to keep them out of the end zone. P.S. Gotsis played in that last series.

GT1990 you are pathetic. You look at the world with only the expectation of W and L. In the real world character and ethics are worth their weight in gold. To refer to a young man that has accomlished in his short life far more than you will ever do show exactly the type of person you are, someone that will never do a damn thing other than bellyache. Grow up and take a look at the real world instead of the Xbox 360 one, child. Your kind are the problem in this society today, instant gratification. Do you have ANY idea just how hard any student athlete works to get through school? I sincerely doubt it based upon the vitriol you display toward a player who in no way deserves it. Did I say TW was the greatest QB in D1 football? Of course not, but I damn sure recognize what he’s has done and worked for which deserves any TECH fan’s respect. In sum, go away little boy and come back when you grow up.

GT1990 stop insulting fellow Tech fans – if winning is all you care about, there are other schools to follow.

Vad does look good but, TW had a highlight run against Presyberian for a TD earlier in the game. Vad also does not have a handle on running the option yet, but that will come. Feel bad for Days because he was clearly across the goal line when he lost the ball – but if he hadn’t fumbled at all it would have been a moot point. Think with that fumble, Vad is clearly number 2 and rising.

Show a little respect to your elders young man! (gt1990) No need to shout (all caps is shouting dumbass). OJF is right. No one thinks TW is the best QB on the team in terms of raw talent. But, in the short time of this season, he has shown the results of hard work to improve over the off season. Most of us want to see VL take over when CPJ says he has learned the offense & is “ready”. That day is not here yet! TW handed the defense a lead with 44 seconds left in GAME & thought he was done for the night. The way the D had played up until then, & with 75 yards to go, it looked like a done deal. Surely your small mind can realize that. If so, then your awakening brain can see that TW did not LOSE the game. He might have scrambled out of the pocket too soon as CPJ said, and missed an open receiver in the process. His INT was meant to go over the end zone. He was at least 1/4 of the to being on his back when the ball left his hand. In other words, he was being sacked & pulled to the ground. Don;t you think he was more heart broken & disappointed than anyone GT fan/supporter watching that game. Dumbass!

@chas_jacket. I wrote last night just how impressed I was with what I saw out of Vad, he’s clearly the most complete QB on the team, his mechanics look very good and he has an above average arm. The pass he completed to Jeff Greene was 40 yards with a flick of his wrist. He had mis reads in the running game and that was to be expected, nothing that more reps and film work will clear up.

What annoys me are “fans” like the child I chastied for denigrating a person who’s worked his tail off to perform as well as he can, Yes, I want Tech to win and to be relevant, after all I been a fan for a long time. TW has had enough time to correct his mistakes since he took over the job in 2010. Your opinion is no more important than mine. CPJ is the one that will decide who should start. You defending TW is just plain stupid on your part. Im happy for TW to earn his degree but, when it comes to him being the starting QB FOR GEORGIA TECH he is CLEARLY not the man for the job. CPJ should have played VL last year. TW should have graduated in the spring and i blame CPJ for that. He is holding the offense back.

Tevin Washington can’t run the option against a talented defense. Why do you think we ran the pistol formation against VT? Washington seems to decide where the ball is going before the snap, or can’t make a decision until the opportunity has already passed. I think Vad Lee at worst has equal trouble reading the defense as TW, but will give us a significantly better chance to gain yards when plays do break down. Washington will never win a close game against a good team. Give Lee a shot.

OL jacket fan – you had more than cause to chastise 1990 . – beginning to think 1990 is a troll. I have met a few characterless GT alums in my life – but only a few.

I am also excited about Vad – the pass to Greene was perfection – Vad has great form running AND throwing. Coach knows Tevin is not going to take us to a BCS bowl – but have to trust him to bring Vad along at the right time. Vad looked ragged running the option late in the game. While his pitches seemed to get to the target , they looked a bit awkward. But a busted play with Vad may be more exciting than the script – looking forward to the UVA game.

My point has never been about TW being the better QB or who should start or not start. If you can’t figure that out you’re more ignorant than I thought. What give you the right to call any person “GARBAGE”? That’s the point you fool.

You want to discuss the relative merits of his QB play? Then do so. You referred to the person not the player in your comments and you should be ashamed of yourself. Instead you now try and deflect by talking about his football abilities. You made your point clear initially and got called out. Don’t try and run away from what you said now. @chas_jacket, I don’t doubt at all that Vad is going to have an increasing role in the offense this year. If he progresses far enough he will take over as the starter and from there on it will be his offense to run. We have to expect some growing pains but there’s no doubt his ceiling is very high, He runs with a stride that reminds me of Eric Dickerson, long and fluid just eating up the yardage.

Good article on Vad on ramblingwreck – excerpt below shows some of how CPJ views Vad. CPJ may be a little partial to Tevin – but redshirting Vad last year and not playing him last week was the right call imho. Doesn’t mean Vad will not be in the mix to start sooner rather than later.

“Head coach Paul Johnson didn’t say for sure, but it doesn’t seem like a stretch to suggest that Lee may play some next week against Virginia, too, even if starter Tevin Washington is doing fine.

Had the Jackets not opened the season with such a stout opponent in such a “salty” place, Lee probably would’ve played in the opener. But, “that game wasn’t for the faint of heart,” Johnson said. It would not have been a great place to break in a player.”

1990 relax a little. TW won the game while Lee just finished PC off. Lee also did not really run the option so we have no idea how he would perform in a complete game. TW had some decent passes and made some great reads in the option game. TW did make a bad throw when trying to throw it away in the VT game, but he also lead the O to 17 points against a top 10 defense and would be a come from behind hero if not for the slly prevent defense that was run in the last 44 seconds. I am just glad to see defensive and offensive improvements, the pistol/shotgun, and we will know more after the UVA and UM games.

TW is the same TW from 2010 and 2011. CPJ should have played VL last year. TW is not the guy to lead Tech to a bowl win or even beating UGA. Tech really needs to beat UGA this year. My hope and faith for CPJ and his coaching staff is fading away fast.

Somebody tried to compare TW to Reggie earlier. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t fly in my book. TW CARES when he blows it or plays a part in a loss. Reggie didn’t give a damn and said as much on several occasions. But as much as I disliked Reggie, I would never call him “garbage,” either as a person or as a QB. The only garbage I see anywhere around here is GT1990. He is an embarrassment to Georgia Tech. I will ignore him from now on, just like I ignore anything that WnE posts. Neither one of them as anything to say that is worth the time it takes me to read.
