O. Smith O.K., other Georgia Tech notes

1. A-back Orwin Smith hurt his shoulder in the third quarter and did not return. He said following the game that “it doesn’t feel too bad. We’ll take this week lightly and I should be out there Saturday.”

Smith finished with four rushes for three yards, his career-low yardage total for a game in which he had more than one carry. He was far more effective catching the ball, contributing 52 yards on four receptions.

2. Georgia Tech is 4-5 all-time in overtime games and 1-2 under coach Paul Johnson. The Jackets beat Wake Forest in Nov. 2009, 30-24, but have lost the last two, in successive games. Before Monday, the Jackets lost to Utah 30-27 in the Sun Bowl.

3. Johnson said the team will be off Tuesday and won’t practice in pads Wednesday followed by a walk-through session on Thursday.

“This was a hard, physical football game, so we definitely won’t be in pads this week,” he said.

4. Georgia Tech is 0-1 for the first time in the Paul Johnson era. The Jackets opened against FCS teams in his first four seasons. The last time Georgia Tech lost its opener was in 2006, when the Jackets lost to Notre Dame 14-10 before going on to win the ACC Coastal Division.

5. Attendance was 65,632. The crowd was nearly all clad in orange, save a sliver of Georgia Tech fans in gold and white. The weather cooperated. While rain was forecast for Monday evening and clouds were dark prior to the game, nary a drop fell on Lane Stadium.

Rest up guys, you earned it. If I lived a thousand miles closer to Atlanta I would have met you all on the plane when you arrived back home. Valiant effort.

The only Valiant effort is one that results in a WIN. Period..

Agree AOT and www. Tech played hard and looked pretty descent doing it. If the team gives that kid of effort every week we are going to have a good season.

i knew AL GROH wud cost us the game. Yeah the defense was good all game until the end. When the chips were pushed out on the table—GROH crumbled like always. Thats the worst Ive ever seen the triple option look. Completely ineffective!!!! Our o-line sure didnt live up to the hype and we simply have no weapons with the exception of Orwin Smith who b*tched out with a shoulder. Tough loss for sure though.

For the life of me, I don’t understand why Paul Johnson always starts throwing the ball when he has plenty of time and the run has been effective most of the night. I also am not a big fan of Al Grohs defense,They played fair against VT, But VT did not look too sharp on offense either. All in all, Good season opener for both clubs

WR blocking was atrocious as was the rest of the team

I agree Coach—downfield blocking was horrid—heck put backup linemen at WR if you have too—they don’t catch passes anyway and don’t even run their routes—-Moore quit running on his one fly pattern where he was thrown the ball and had he kept running TW would have hit him in stride. A-back blocking wasn’t much better—you don’t have to pancake the defender just shield him from the RB and the ball carrier read your block and make his cut. This diving at people’s feet crap is poor coaching if that’s how it’s being taught.

What I hate is taking away the hero’s mantel from Tevin Washington and Deon Hill.
With Sweeting having a bad game, prevent D of some kind was in order.
I got plenty sick of the B Back dive though VT may have had the other options covered better.
We had this game and let it slip away.
When we finally get a guy who can kick it out of the endzone, a shorter kick may have been in order to waste a few seconds.
But then we were worried about the return from last time there.
The team deserved a W.
Really ticked about this.

Any GT fan is frustrated after this game. However, with 59:16 gone we had the best DEFENSIVE team we’ll face all year (including bowl) defeated AT THEIR PLACE. It’s hardly time to panic.

@gt4ever: study up on your Bear Bryant cliche’s or better yet, stick to Madden ‘13 or whatever.

Don’t mind loosing a game where your getting your butt kicked but I hate giving the game to the other team. Finish the game…
