How Johnson changed mind on 4th down

Georgia Tech’s go-ahead touchdown drive at the end of regulation nearly didn’t happen. Coach Paul Johnson sent out the punt team on 4th-and-6 from the Virginia Tech 37-yard line with a little more than three minutes to play.

“I was thinking I would pin [Virginia Tech],” Johnson said.

However, all didn’t go as Johnson wanted.

“ I yell, ‘Punt team!’’’ Johnson said. “I didn’t tell them soon enough, I guess. They didn’t get out there fast enough to suit me. They were milling around. You had half the guys over here. I just said, ‘Screw it, get off the field, we’ll go for it.’”

After the timeout, with 3:03 left, quarterback Tevin Washington scrambled away from pressure and hit A-back B.J. Bostic for a 19-yard gain and first down. Georgia Tech scored a touchdown four plays later.

Hilarious. I love CPJ, I really do. He’s honest, if nothing else. The only gripe I have with him is when he says that he can’t tell why something didn’t work (b-back running in this case) without looking at the tape. How can you make game-time adjustments if you don’t know what’s not working during the game. I think this shows in play calling sometimes. Well, that didn’t work, not sure why, let’s try the same thing again.

Now I’m pissed. I didn’t think that Tech could possibly learn to pass in the off season , AGAIN. So I’d pretty much written this season off as Johnson’s last. But, except for one colossal brain fart by TW in OT the passing game looked good enough and the D looked pretty awesome. Now, I’m excited about the season yet at the same time, there is not much possibility after this loss that we can win the Coastal.

I think that when CPJ says “I need to look at the tape” he really means “I think your an idiot and I am not answering your dumb question.” I’m not saying the question was dumb, but I bet CPJ feels that way.

Excellent point Wrecking Ball. That’s why you have a coach in the press box to read those things. CPJ doesn’t use a play chart—maybe he has all that in his head, but he often doesn’t wear a headset so why is he limiting himself in not getting immediate feedback on what is going on on the field? He’s the OC. This offense can be a terror to defend against, but like chess or boxing, you have to make adjustments on the fly based on your opponent’s plays and it seemed last night that we were very slow to make adjustments.

CPJ has hired a ST coach and a new S&C coach. Now he needs to hire a OC. He needs some help calling plays. Too many attempts at the deep ball when that wasn’t necessary. Short passes would have worked all night. Great game from defense. Offense has to step up. STs looked very confident. ” GO JACKETS “

The only problem with the offense is that tevin Washington decides where the ball is going before the snap. He can’t make the proper read quick enough to get the ball in the right player’s hands. I love Paul Johnson, but I can’t help but question his decision to stick with Washington. He proved last year that he’s inept against a solid d. We won’t win a close game against a decent opponent until we find a solid qb. Did you notice how we abandoned the option in the 2nd half bc of washington’s performance? I’ll be extremely frustrated if Vad lee isn’t under center soon.

Part of the problem with the passing game is protection and TW’s happy feet. I think, in general, TW sees a little pressure and starts to scramble instead of staying in as long as he can to make the right reads. It helped on 4th down, but not in OT. In OT, the DL was five yards away before he started running. It looks like his short crossing routes were starting to open, especially since the left LB was blitzing.

However, the protection wasn’t very good either. The RB missed the blitzing left LB. The left tackle was beaten badly by a spin move by the right DE and the left guard didn’t block anyone. TW’s scrambling to the left allowed the def guard to get off of the center’s block and allowed the right LB to close.

If the LG helps with the DE and the RB picks up the LB, he has more time to throw. This is a talent problem (LG) and it’s an execution problem. It was starting to concern me that the scrimmages at the end of summer camp weren’t getting very good reviews. With several key ACC games early in the schedule, they need to get these problems ironed out quickly.

@Givemeabreak

Yes, hire a OC like Ralph Friedgen, and let him take over the reigns completely. Hire a Recruiting coordinator that can get the job done… He wont do either. He is too arrogant and thinks his offense can’t be stopped… Even though EVERY good team we have played, and some not so good have stopped his POS offense.

A real heartbreaker. A lot of encouraging signs from this team overall. CPJ concerns me at times. Seems to panic too much late in a game. Like why unveil the pistol with 6 min to go. It almost backfired but TW converted a 3rd down pass and made some more clutch plays on that drive. But why call for a punt there when he gambles most every other 4th down? Hard to make sense of his logic, often.

I’m getting a little tired of all the negative criticism. Paul Johnson should pass more……why does he go to the pistol? (to PASS stupid). I was at the game last night and very proud of the effort by our coaches and team. We should be praising Paul Johnson, Al Groh, all the coaches, Tevin Washington, all the players for a job WELL DONE. I would rather be the team we are right now than the one that could barely lead Buffalo at the half.

@CGL, aha I get it now, pistol = pass. Thanks for ur great insight. My point is, besides the fact the team overall was probably much better than most really expected, that CPJs decision making at critical junctures seems ragged at times. We outplayed them most of the way, save for one misplay by Sweeting who otherwise played a GREAT game. Still with 7 min left, I think you should keep doing what got you the lead before that bomb was completed. 7 min is enough to run every play down the field to score and win. Instead he (CPJ) changes his game plan like its desperation time. It almost worked out and I am still optimistic for the season ahead, I’m just pointing out that the iffy stuff I saw.

I thought we had the game won. The boys played great.

Our special team play was superior. Big difference from last year.
Our defense played great. Did not give up the big play, made them earn almost everything despite being down a couple of key players.
Disappointed in the B back play but VT is not chopped liver. When Sims got in there we were grinding out 4 yds each carry.
Tevin looked pretty good passing I thought. Freshman mistake at the end but I think emotions got the best of the boys. I think they had a let down when they thought they had it won with 44 seconds to go.

Go Jackets.

The change of heart on 4th down was the right call. Three minutes is not enough time for GT to “pin” the hokies and then have a go at the TD given the offense we run. We HAD to do it right then and there, and thankfully it worked out. Too bad Reggie Ball Jr. made that boneheaded decision at the end.

If the STs was milling around and wasn’t ready to go, then maybe the ST coach hasn’t really been doing his JOB which is to keep his guys READY & ALERT at all times.

Before I get criticized please explain how I am being unfair or why I should over look this obvious coaching ERROR by our new STs Coach?

I actually thought going to the pistol helped….the TO was stuffed all night—-got a few yds on the dive, and a few good fakes by TW did ok with the keeper but VT agressively brought in the safeties on the pitch….only the sweep was working outside. I would think that CPJ would have made more adjustments more quickly than he did in response to the way Bud Foster was defending against the TO—maybe some reverse direction/counters etc. The QB draw if patient also worked and Days is better for that than TW so put him in for a few plays. This is option football and rotating QBs is not some major faux pas like other offenses. They guys played hard—did not block well and I’d give CPJ a B- on his play calling. There’s 11 more games so let’s learn from it, forget the loss and move on.

1. Not enough credit is given to VT defense on how it affected the GT offense
2. Same for VT offense and GT defense

Everyone wants to blame TW but… The line could not block, the A and B backs missed blocks, and the WR could not block. Bad blocking yields no yards. This was superior defense play combined with supar offense play.

Only O. Smith ran full out making cuts at full speed to miss tackels. The other backs slowed on the cut allowing the tackel.

Last but not least, we were out coached. Their defense guessed inside and outside more times then they missed. We gave to the dive straight into certain LB blitzes. Sometime CPJ calls for a dive and not the option. Bad “new” plays were repeated when the given defense predicted certain failure.

Paul Johnson’s offense is perfectly fine. The qb running it is not. I am a big fan of PJ but you have to question his decision to stick with Washington. I know that he’s the only experienced qb on the roster, but he proved last year that he wasn’t capable of running this offense against a defense with legit talent. Seems like Washington decides where the ball is going before the snap which defeats the purpose of the option. I thought the defense played well, especially with 3 starters out. The wr’s are going to have to block better and a qb change has to be made if tech is going to make any noise this season. I love pj’s attitude, but sometimes you’ve got to quit being stubborn, cut your losses, and move on. We couldn’t even run the option in the 2nd half because of washington’s ineptitude. It’s time to see what Vad Lee is made of. Now,

PJ has a stupid HS offense and he cant recruit… Ya Ya we have heard it all.. They played a great game and could have gone either way… It went into overtime!! A few less missed blocks and assignments, the little things make all the difference… Hopefully the team will have more polish each week…

Anyway how is the Dream Team in Athens… Last count I heard was 7 gone… and as far as CPJ bringing in 1-AA talent… CMR is doing the same, Crowell is now going to be one of the best 1-AA RBs… I wonder which 1-AA team Gurley or any of the other UGA players will end up at?? UGA the community college farm team for top 1-AA talent…

The main problem the offense has right now IMO… is this.. When Nesbitt was running the show the defense had pressure on them to get the ball out of his hands.. Dwyer had the same affect as well. Currently the QB and B back create no pressure on the defense… So it creates this bend but dont break type strategy.. There is no burst from either position. The holes look about the same as they always have… At least our starting tackle isnt 250 lbs anymore.. The YAC is missing too.. Ken is it possible to figure out YAC on Dwyer, Allen, and now Sims. The offense will get you the 4-6 yard dive and QB follow, but they aren’t fast enough and dont create many yards after contact (YAC)..

Santa Monica Jacket, the biggest difference I’ve seen with this team is that there were SO many missed blocks on the perimeter. While our receivers remain untested in regards to catches, they failed miserably in the area of blocking. It looked like VT worked on avoiding the low blocks that we use…it also looked like we tried to make those blocks a step earlier than we should have. Hopefully, CPJ and staff tweak this this week! For the most part, I liked what I saw from this team…GO TECH!!!

On a side note: I’d like to point out that it was one of the writers from the AJC that coined the phrase, “Moral Victory”….a phrase used by mutt fans when talking smack to Tech fans. I don’t know a single Tech fan that is cool with a loss…even when it’s a hard fought game. I HATE that we lost last night, but saw a lot of things that permit me to remain optimistic about this team!!!
