BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech’s season opener Monday night dredged up two of the most painful memories of the 2011 season.
Late-game shortcomings and overtime loss. The combination produced a 20-17 overtime loss to Virginia Tech. It’s the Yellow Jackets’ second consecutive overtime loss, following the Sun Bowl defeat to Utah in December. That game was also sent to overtime by late scores by the opposition.
“I thought we got the momentum late,” coach Paul Johnson said. “To their credit, they came back and took it back. They did what they had to do to put the game into overtime and then won in overtime. Kind of gift-wrapped it for ‘em in overtime a little bit.”
Monday night, before a national-television audience, Virginia Tech game won in the first overtime round with a 17-yard field goal by kicker Cody Journell. It followed the Jackets’ opening possession of overtime, when quarterback Tevin Washington threw an interception by throwing a risky pass on third-and-6 from the Hokies’ 10-yard line as he was being tackled to the ground.
“I was trying to throw the ball away,” Washington said.
It was an unfortunate end for Washington, who led Tech on a breathtaking 72-yard touchdown drive on its final possession of regulation that included a 19-yard pass to convert a fourth down. He swung a 10-yard pass to A-back Deon Hill for a score that put the Jackets up 17-14 with 44 seconds remaining.
“He made some great plays on the last drive in regulation,” Johnson said.
It called to mind Georgia Tech’s final drive of the 2010 loss to the Hokies at Lane Stadium, when Washington replaced starter Joshua Nesbitt after he broke his arm. In that game, Washington drove the Jackets to the Hokies’ 16-yard line before throwing an interception into the end zone with seconds to play. At that point, it seemed that Washington might gain his redemption and he was atypically exuberant after the touchdown pass.
Said Hill, “They were playing a little man (coverage) and we were running a little pick route to get one of us open on both sides on the crosses, so Tevin found me and we were able to score good blocking up front and everybody did their job.”
However, after Hill’s go-ahead touchdown, Tech surrendered 51 yards in the final 44 seconds, resulting in a 41-yard field goal by Journell as regulation time expired.
“We missed a couple tackles, and they did what they had to do,” Johnson said.
Said Hill, “There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to win (after the touchdown), but things happen, I guess. We counted our chickens too early.”
The final Hokies score in regulation bore unpleasant familiarity. In 2011, when Georgia Tech lost five of its last seven games, the Jackets were outscored 54-17 in the fourth quarter and overtime of those games.
Regarding its ACC title-game aspirations, the loss places the Jackets in straits that, if not dire, are hardly enviable. Barring the unlikelihood of three Coastal Division teams finishing 7-1 in league play, Georgia Tech’s best chance is to run the table to finish 7-1 and then hope the Hokies lose twice in their final seven games.
“There’s absolutely nothing we can do but play football,” defensive end Izaan Cross said. “That’s what we’re going to do. We have plenty of games left. Maybe something will happen, maybe Virginia Tech will get caught slipping. You never know what happens. We’ve just got to continue playing our best and see what happens.”
Johnson fell to 1-4 against the Hokies. The four losses have been by a combined 24 points. The Jackets have lost three in a row in Blacksburg and five of the past six overall to Virginia Tech.
“We really struggled to start the game,” Johnson said. “We missed some reads. We were like popcorn. We settled down a little bit, but to their credit, they did a good job of never letting us get in much rhythm.”
The game did not start well, as the Hokies flipped the field on the opening possession, forced a three-and-out on Georgia Tech’s first series, then went 56 yards in 12 plays for the game’s opening touchdown with little resistance. Quarterback Logan Thomas, who had terrorized the Jackets in the Virginia Tech win last November, converted two third downs on the drive and then flipped a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Eric Martin.
Georgia Tech tied the game at 7 after receiving a giant special-teams break from the Hokies, a mishandled punt snap that gave the Jackets the ball at the Hokies 24-yard line. A-back Robbie Godhigh capitalized, breaking three tackles to score off a toss on a 12-yard scoring run. It was the first career touchdown and just the third career carry for the former walk-on who earned a starting job in preseason camp.
Defensive coordinator Al Groh’s unit began to stiffen thereafter, not permitting the Hokies into the Georgia Tech red zone over the next seven possessions.
The trouble for the Jackets was that the offense was having similar, if not greater, difficulty against the stout Hokies defense. Virginia Tech finished 2011 with top-10 results in both yards and points allowed and welcomed nine starters back, eight of whom were on the field Monday night.
The Jackets took a 10-7 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter after sustaining a plodding drive for 56 yards on 15 plays. David Scully’s 34-yard field goal, the first of his career, finished the drive.
Virginia Tech responded with its own 56-yard drive, but it ended with a 38-yard field goal miss by Journell. The Hokies put together a touchdown drive – three plays, 75 yards – followed one possession later for a 14-10 lead.

After last nights game it is an appropriate time to make the case against overtime . . . a tie is a legitimate and revealing outcome . . . To change the rules to satisfy a fans craving for a “winner” is a gross compromise.

The sad thing is WnE, you’re not always wrong in your critiques, you just go about the wrong way.
Johnson’s a weak recruiter. No excuse for GT not to have a better QB in year 5. Their’s plenty of big time dual threat QBs all over the place in college football & Tevin(I’m afraid) isn’t one of them.
You could have been real & voiced your opinions during the game — when the game was a toss up, instead you waited til the whistle blew so you could pile on with your antics.
I don’t always disagree with what you say WnE — you’re actually right about this so-called student athlete referendum coming to the NC2A in a couple years hurting the likes of GT not helping them.

I’m a GT Lifer and up until last night I supported CPJ but unfortunately it’s plain and simple, CPJ is not capable of beating a well coached and equally or slightly better talented team. The play calling and the inability to throw a pass when needed goes to coaching. Even a poor passer can complete some passes if practiced enough. His refusal to have an alternative offensive scheme against well coached and disciplined defenses will keep us out of the true hunt as long as he’s here. His offense was exciting and fun to watch in the beginning, but I’m afraid it’s run the course. Time to say good bye to old CPJ.

As a VT alum, I actually thought GT did really well right up until that interception. The Jacket defense was looking much improved from last year, Tevin was looking much improved from last year, and with 40 seconds left in the game, an underdog, unranked GT team was in the driver’s seat to win.
Did the Jacket offense look like world-beaters? No, but it was playing an experienced, well-coached defense which is probably the #1 or #2 defense in the ACC this year.
Did the defense “fall apart”? In overtime, yes – but that was after having the late-game lead evaporate and watching Tevin give up that awful interception in overtime. But at the end of regulation, they actually got several good stops before giving up the pass plays, the first of which was some amazingly fortunate needle-threading by Logan Thomas. That was more a matter of good players + good fortune than a defensive problem by GT.
I think you guys are in a better position than you realize. VT has 4 (potentially) difficult matchups ahead in-conference: @UNC, @Miami, @Clemson and FSU at home. 3 of those are in a row at the end of the season, and the UVA game may not be as easy as we made it look last year. If GT stays focused and has a good game against Clemson, you have every chance to get back into this thing.

Wheenie is a joke. What does it say about someone who contributes (or, at lest thinks they are contributing) the amount of meaningless drivel by such long diatribes with the sole purpose of gloating? I will tell you who. It is someone that needs to feel that they are right, is not comforable enough knowing himself that he is right, but needs to gloat. He is not secure enough in his own skin, but needs the approval of others. He is the guy that assumes he is always right and woners why he gets fired for his “attitude” and not his performance. This is the same person who contacted a recruit via twitter and told him that he made the wrong decision and should reconsider his college choice, an underage recruit that neither asked for or wants this input.
The guy may be right in some areas, but no one wants to hear about it because, as Crimson pointed out, he goes about it in the absolute wrong way.
I really do not understand the expectaion to win every game, even when the opponent is more highly ranked. It just doesn’t make sense. All I ask is that we are competitive in every game and have a chance, winning those we should and getting a break from time to time and winning a few we shouldn’t, improving each week in some manner.
If you don’t think GT had that chance against the #16 team in the country last night, well you either did not watch the game or are looking through such tinted glasses, blinded by your own pre-ordained opinions.
I personally agree with Crimson that Wheenie may be right in certain areas, but I am not sure what they are as I tuned him out long ago for the above reasons.
As for the rest of the year, Dave made some valid points and brings light to the fact that VT’s schedule his a few more potential bumps along the way.

A pass play that should have been stopped at 10 yds, but because of a missed tackle went for 23 yds and VT had a 42 yd FG vice a 55 yd FG which the latter I seriously doubt they would have made. GT then wins the game. We had a big play on 4th & 6, they had a muffed punt, they had a big TD pass…all are big plays, and VT simply made one more big play than us.
Had we won, we would have been thankful but since we lost now everyone questions the program….it reminds me of that Akin guy Senate candidate (R) in MO that made a stupid comment about rape and suddenly Obama goes from being behind in MO to being ahead….talk about overreaction! Yes, we didn’t block well, and yes it appeared CPJ was too conservative on play-calling and also VT looked rusty on passing…..but we played a higher ranked team at their place and got to a position to win the game even when we were not playing well….and as pointed out in the first sentence…we were one play away from winning it. There’s a lot of football left to play….maybe VT loses a couple of ACC games like we just did and we’re back in it. If we end up 4-1 in Sept, then we’re doing well—-then being 7-2 going into November and we’re probably doing better than expected. So let’s make the best of the rest of the games and if we fall significantly short on our expectations, then start to question the program.

Just a few observations; first, until Tevin starts throwing passes to WR’s downfield more than once in a blue moon, there’s no incentive for DB’s to back off the LoS and they can easily cover the quick out passes and provide run support. If Tevin is afraid to throw downfield, find someone who isn’t.
Next, I can’t understand why Paul Johnson went right on his 4th down run rather than left…they were stuffed virtually every time the team ran to the right side but got positive yardage when they ran left.
I thought, for the most part, the defense played well, especially since they were so shorthanded and they were only playing with about a dozen or so guys on the defense all night. They had to be gassed by the end of the game.
Finally, I thought special teams had improved with the exception of the opening kickoff.

I had the priviledge of watching Hunt-Days in H.S.
He is probably the best full back on the team not playing full back….or B-back to make the CPJ option junkies happy. Jabari switched to linebacker his senior year and played fairly well.
I am most impressed with the progress that he has made with his technique and hawking skills.
Remember, the kid only played linebacker for one year in H.S.
Drummond is a good ball player and rightfully should be your starter.. Jabari has shown that he can more than handle filling in to give these guys rest during the course of a game.
I think that we should be giving Tevin a break. Tevin manages the game better than any other QB to play in this scheme thus far. He may not always make the right decisions, but it is nice not having the 3-4 fumbles a game that were common in the first 3 years of us running the option. The kid is as tough as any QB that we have seen a Tech in quite a while. Everyone complains that he looks slow, but I would say that he is very smooth. Hank Aaron was always accused of being lazy, but the truth was he never looked like he was trying hard because he had very little wasted motion. Watching Tevin, I really feel that he exhibits the same ease of motion.

I seriously love your site.. Excellent colors & theme. Did you build this web site yourself? Please reply back as I’m trying to create my own personal blog and would like to learn where you got this from or exactly what the theme is called. Thanks!
