Barnes likely first to wear No. 40 for Tech

Nose tackle T.J. Barnes will likely be the first Georgia Tech player to wear No. 40 in honor of former teammate Julian Burnett, Monday night in the season opener at Virginia Tech. Tech spokesman Dean Buchan posted the news on his Twitter account Sunday evening.

The team’s seniors are honoring Burnett, whose career came to end with a neck injury in the Sun Bowl, by taking turns wearing his No. 40 jersey.

“We’re trying to do something for Julian,” Barnes said at the team’s media day Aug. 4. “He was a big part of the team the past couple of years.”

Barnes, who usually wears No. 90, wears a triple extra large jersey.

(By the way, while he doesn’t wear 3xL, Dean is definitely worth following on Twitter. You can follow me here.)

If TJB plays like he did the Clemson game last yeat we can get to LT. I hope that he plays inspired football and that TJB does the number proud.

If we can continually put pressure/ legal contact on LT i think we win by 14. If we can’t then it will be a long night and a long season…pressuring the QB must be priority espcially with an inexpeirenced Oline.

This is the big game we have to win to start building a succesful season.

Go JACKETS!!!!

Hopefully wearing #40 will give Barnes just a little extra inspiration to flatten Logan at every opportunity. Regardless, thank God the wait is FINALLY over!! My absolute favorite time of year starts tonight!!!! And thanks for the comments Big C!!! Congrats on the whoopin’ ya’ll gave Michigan yesterday! That was VERY enjoyable watching ya’ll introduce them to Southern-style football!!!

Wow – didn’t think that TJ would get to wear the 40 first – but it’s a great choice for this game. If we can get pressure up the middle, it will go a long way to stopping Logan. Have to say I am still a little concerned about our secondary having Young and Holten out for the big game. Think Golden will be really good with some experience – He’ll definitely get it tonight.

chas_jacket i figured it’d be Tevin Washington, but perhaps it’s more fitting to start with defense.
GTGirl – i don’t know for sure, but i think it’ll be regular uniforms, new helmets.

I’m guessing TJ getting to wear the number is a combination of recognition for his work over the summer – I think he got the most positive press other than the new S&C coach in the offseason – and CPJ hoping it will get a little extra effort out of him for tonight.

I’m sure the VT folks feel the same way, but I think tonight could be the start of a special year. I’ll know more in about 15 hours. BTW, if any of you are at the game and/or tailgating, hope to see you there.

Ken, I thought TW too, but if this season is to be really successful, TJB will have to play with a motor like JB.

Coming from a life long Dawg fan, this may not mean much to Tech fans. I believe this VPI game is a statement game for the future of CPJ. His legacy as a top flight Tech coach can take hugh steps forward with fans and administrators with a win today. He will still be your coach reguardless of the outcome but his stock goes way up w/ the fence sitters w/ a win. Being about the most competitive coach around,I see him pulling out all the stops tonight. I like his fire, I just don’t care for Tech much. But that goes w/ the territory of being a Dawg.

let me first say that I am a Dawg fan, but I was really bummed when Georgia did not offer Burnett out of high school. You could tell he was a real player. He did a great job at Tech and I was sorry to see he was no going to play anymore. Best of Luck to you Julian.

Paddy, thanks for bringing positive discourse to the blog. I think you’re right. I love CPJ (completely plutonic) as does a lot of the fanbase, but a win cements that love for a longer period of time. No matter how much you like a guy (see Joe Pa, Bobby Bowden), he’s got to continue to represent the school well. Hopefully, CPJ will tonight.

Plus, as a lot of your higher class dog brethren have stated in the past, only good things can come of a competitive Saturday after Thanksgiving. Better total recruiting within the state and keep kids like Stephon Tuitt in state, at either school.

7-5 against ranked opponents (note the majority of those losses to two teams) and 22-1 when scoring 30 or more points. Here’s to 30 points tonight :)

Might as well forget about 40 and move on. I recall when Todd Uremovich, the starting sophomore LB for Tech, broke his neck. The team did not wear his number the next season. The same went with that RB named Tony something who started for Tech and averaged about 7 yards a carry, then broke his leg, and never played again. Nobody wore his number afterwards. You just gotta forget about these guys and realize that Tech has many payers who are eager for pt and to take the place of the injured. I’m sure Vad Lee is eager to line up in a shotgun to help take Tech to the next level, that of conformity to the norm of football from hs to the pros. Practice and experiment with the shotgun until practice makes perfect. Many things can be accomplished during practices such as linemen giving coaches rides on single linemen sleds, and wind sprints from goal line to goal line at the end of practices.

I am seeing many coincidences at this time. 40 broke his neck. Barnes is 3xl. I am a Tech grad at 60 yrs old and wear a 3xl at 296. I hope I didn’t break my tailbone last Tuesday when Hurricane Isaac caused me to slip on front door threshold, both feet out at same time, nothing to grab on to, and land on concrete landing. I hope my 296 lb muscles prevented a break, but I’m still sore and taking anti-inflammatorys every day. Isaac just “shafted” me, preferring a slippery dirt road. During last week there was the fall in the Georgia Dome also.

The best way to honor JB is to put up 40 pts on VPI!

Time to quit talking turkey and go stomp on one. It should be a great game.

Though I hope for 40 points a more plausible forecast: Tech has two sustained drives that lead to a TD and FG. We have one trick play (A back pass or something) that scores a TD and Special Teams or D also sets up a score—either FG or TD so we get 20 to 24 points. Don’t know if that will be enough, but that seems likely for us.

think of #40 from 1975 -1978 with Eddie Lee Ivery and give it to some running back who can rack up 356 yards in a game! That’ll fix VT up just fine.
