UPDATED: Perkins to start at B-back

UPDATED, 12:40 p.m. — Georgia Tech B-back Charles Perkins will start Monday night against Virginia Tech, coach Paul Johnson said at his Friday news conference. Johnson said that Sims is not yet 100 percent and that Perkins earned the start over Laskey through his performance in practice.

Johnson said that the depth chart remains open to change in the future, that Laskey and Perkins are “neck and neck” and will both play Monday night. Laskey, Perkins and Sims have all missed practice time during fall camp, which has muddied the picture at the featured position in the Tech offense. Johnson also noted the play of backups Broderick Snoddy and Matt Connors.

“They all bring some different things to the table, and this week in practice, Charles has probably been the best at all of it,” Johnson said.

It will be the first career start for Perkins, a sophomore.

“Hopefully, Charles will go out there and rush for 200 yards,” Johnson said.

Other notes from the news conference:

1. Safety Fred Holton was not on the depth chart, pushing sophomore Jamal Golden to the top at safety, and is not expected to play. Holton has been out with an undisclosed injury. Tech will be down two starters in the secondary, as cornerback Louis Young will be out serving a suspension. True freshman D.J. White, who has impressed in the preseason, is a candidate to play in sub packages.

“I think D.J.’s a really good athlete, he’s a competitor, he wants to be good, he plays hard, and we’ll see,” Johnson said. “We might roll people around. Coray Carlson’s probably the next guy at defensive back, but, again, it depends on situations and what the deal is. We’re preparing D.J. to play.”

Golden has trained at different positions in various packages and figures to receive considerable playing time because of his versatility.

2. Regarding quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days, Johnson said he has progressed at A-back and knows his assignments. “We may use him in some different spots,” Johnson said. “I think he’ll be in the game.”

Days and Vad Lee are listed as co-No. 2 behind starting quarterback Tevin Washington.

3. Wide receiver Chris Jackson has what Johnson calls “an eligibility issue” regarding his academic credits and will not play. It stems, Johnson said, from his transfer from Alabama. Johnson said he became aware of the situation on Wednesday. Tech is undergoing an appeals process to clear Jackson.

“We thought we were O.K., right now he’s not,” Johnson said. “He may have to miss a couple games. We’ll know more about it when we get closer.”

With Jackson out, true freshman Anthony Autry is listed as the second-string wide receiver behind Jeff Greene. The likely scenario at that position is that Greene, starter Jeremy Moore and Darren Waller will work in a three-man rotation.

4. Conceivably, seven players – A-back Robbie Godhigh, defensive end Emmanuel Dieke, inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days, Golden, Greene, Moore and Perkins – could make their first career starts Monday night. Whether they actually start or not – the defensive starters will be dictated by Virginia Tech’s offensive personnel on the first snap – all will log considerable playing time.

“Nobody’s going to play perfect, and they won’t either,” Johnson said. “You just hope you minimize the mistakes, you hope that they don’t create big plays for the other team, huge plays, and then you move on.”

5. Orwin Smith and Tony Zenon will return kickoffs and Jemea Thomas will take punts. There won’t be a rotation, Johnson said.

Perkins is going to make the most of this opportunity. We will see #21 running through defenses again and it will seem like old times.

Well that was unexpected. Huge opportunity though. If Perkins can have a good game against a good team then he can cement himself at the top of the depth chart for a while.

He’s always seemed like a back that needs more then 3 or 4 carries to get going, never has really had a shot so this may be his chance, I think he’ll have a good game.

So we have two starters suspended (Drummond & Young) and 3 injured (Sims, Horton, Chamberlain) and Laskey I guess is still suffering from strep throat? So we start with #3 guy at B-back. THis is a great opportunity for Perkins—run strong and protect the ball. I guess we’ll be testing our depth right out of the gate. Hope no one pulls a muscle getting off the bus.

Victory lap?

You sound delusional!

Perkins is only getting PT because CPJ has recruited horribly at B-Back PLUS, 2 players in FRONT of him have injury issues!

Please explain how that validates anything you have written?

If anything it only serves to prove that he is a bust (like I said long ago) because a helluva lot of “stars had to line up perfectly” in order for him to start at GT.

You try so hard to for a rare & fleeting “gotcha WnE” moment that you are constantly making yourself look silly…………….

Looking at that depth chart , and knowing how much CPJ subs his WRs, I hope we never get caught with 183lb. Moore at one WR and 173lb. Autry in the game at the same time.

I’m not sure we’ll get the blocking we need from those 2 guys.

Is there any point to skip in a line after each setence?

Or is just a stunt to get attention?

Either way, let’s try to ignore the trolls as best as we can.

I hope Perkins comes out and tries to keep the starting spot. Some folks need extra motivation like being listed lower on the depth chart or withholding who will start until the last minute. I bet you CPJ sat Perkins down and told him what a great opportunity to get the starting job and how he would like to see him earn it and keep it.

I can’t wait to see our D line and their Oline go at it. I want Logan Thomas to have a great view of the sky on his back. Get after him early and often…especially with a green oline and green RB and WR.

Our O and their D will be what it comes down too, that and special teams.

GO JACKETS!

Back to Anthony “the singing cowboy” Autry, i would hope that going into his 5th season as GT’s HC that CPJ would have recruited well enough that we would not HAVE TO play a 6-2 173lb. T-Fr. at WR, maybe if he had blazing 4.36 speed to go along with that slight frame, but for Autry to make the depth chart shows that CPJ has not Recruited well at WR and probably has spent too many schollies on under-sized A-backs.

If no one like what WNE says, why respond to the guy? And I definitely don’t understand the “Here comes WNE” comments, it’s almost like he’s Simon Cowell, or Gordon Ramsey. People say they hate them but they love listening to them, its dumb, just don’t respond to the guy or don’t complain about what he has to say, everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it is a dumb one.

With that said, I hope CP21 can make the BB spot look more like it did when Dwyer and Allen were running it. If he can get us back to close to that standard then our offense will be so much better this year and that should take some pressure off of Tevin and the Abacks.

A couple notes from ESPN’s ACC blog regarding VT and their prep for GT’s “Chop-blocking-happy” offense.

By: MIKE BARBER | Richmond Times-Dispatch
Published: August 31, 2012 Updated: August 31, 2012 – 12:00 AM
BLACKSBURG, Va. —
For a player who has battled foot and ankle injuries during his five years of football at Virginia Tech, Jeron Gouveia-Winslow did his best Thursday to downplay any concerns about facing Georgia Tech’s chop-block-happy triple-option offense in Monday night’s season opener.

Monday night, Gouveia-Winslow said protecting himself from Yellow Jackets blockers diving at his legs to take him out of plays will be on his mind and the minds of his teammates.

“This is a very physical game,” junior cornerback Kyle Fuller said. “We have to be ready to hit, play off cut blocks. It’s definitely a little more difficult than going against a regular offense.”

Despite the risk of injury, Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said there is no other way to prepare for the Yellow Jackets’ style than having the scout team run it full speed in practice, cut blocks and all.

Go Jackets! Cut’em down and get the W!

This is a lot of injuries for a first game. Then add in the suspensions and a tough game on the road suddenly gets tougher.

Now we find out if the depth is quality depth and not just numbers.

50% of our starting secondary out—-not good going against a Heisman candidate QB. Yes, he has new receivers, but they are big and just because they are new doesn’t mean they cannot catch the ball. All our WRs are new and we expect them to catch the ball.

Our Offense better grind it out—-we’re bound to give up an easy one through the air so we’ll probably need 28 or 31 pts to win this game.

JustinSyder

yellerbug: I wouldn’t call Logan Thomas a Heisman canidate. He was 39th in the nation last year in passing yards, and through 19 TDs and 10 INTs. I’d consider him more of a threat on the ground if anything.

Seems GT is not the only team with problems:

“Michigan coach Brady Hoke has suspended starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint and reserve defensive end Frank Clark for Saturday night’s opener against No. 2 Alabama.”
