Georgia Tech notes: Holton held out again

1. Georgia Tech safety Fred Holton and offensive tackle Morgan Bailey were held out of practice again with injuries, but that was about all coach Paul Johnson would offer on the topic in advance of the Monday opener against Virginia Tech.

Asked about a replacement for Holton, Johnson said, “We’ll let you know [Friday],” when the team will release its depth chart for Monday’s game.

Whether or not Holton plays, defensive back Jamal Golden should see considerable playing time with cornerback Louis Young out because of a suspension. Golden, who mostly played special teams last season as a freshman, has been working at various positions in the secondary.

Coaches “haven’t really told me anything” about playing time or role, Golden said. “I’ve just been repping a number of spots, so I’m just trying to stay confident and learn the defense as best I can and just go into the game ready in case I get in it.”

2. Players wore the new helmets – white with adjoining hexagons outlined in gold, suggesting a yellow jacket nest – Thursday at practice. When safety Isaiah Johnson saw the helmet for the first time, he said his reaction was “About time. About time to switch it up, do something new. We don’t know our jersey situation, but (it’s good) just to change it up.”

“I think it’s pretty nice,” Golden said. “It’s just something new.”

Golden said he had no idea if the Jackets will wear them against the Hokies.

“I would like to, but [my opinion] is not going to make a difference,” he said.

In case you missed it…

My theories from weeks ago have been finally validated by CPJ’s recent comments.

The so-called “deep 2ndary” is just a mirage and shows how much glowing practice reports can be misleading.

On the 8-20-2012 Depth Chart Co-Ray Carlson was the #2 Safety behind Holton at that safety position.

If we truly had good depth in the 2ndary, then if Holton cannot go then you just move Carlson up and keep right on plugging along, the fact that we/CPJ have to start moving guys to new positions and juggling the depth chart means that we don’t have the depth in 2ndary that CPJ claimed we have/had.

It sure would be nice to have a very fast, very strong 6-2 215 to 220lbs. elite athlete playing safety for GT, but then again our genius HC would rather use him to dive at kneecaps and maybe carry the ball 3 times per game playing A-back instead.

I’ll bet CPJ wishes he had moved Days over to safety after Spring Ball, especially if Holton is going to be in-and-out of the lineup with nagging injuries.

If you’re too injured to go at practice level intensity, then under game stess, you’re not likely to last very long or play at a very high level.

We’d probably be better off sitting Holton for the first 3 or 4 games and hoping he’ll be at full strength for the last 8 games rather than him never fully healing and trying to play at 80-85% coming off of a major injury.

Sometimes injuries can linger and never allow you to play at your max for a full season.

BTW how can we rely on Golden when he’s admitted above that he’s still trying to “learn the defense”, THREE DAYS before the season opens?

For all the talk of our Recruits being the smartest and having the best SATs among PUBLIC colleges, we sure do have a hard time LEARNING our playbooks on BOTH sides of the ball.

For all the talk (not from me of course, I respect all competitors) of UGA Recruiting “knuckle-dragging”, “mouth-breathing idiots”, they sure do learn their playbooks a LOT FASTER than our super-smart GT players.

I agree with the assessment on SD … But hey, there must be a good reason SD is not moved to defense… For the life of me, I just can’t come up with any reasons Days is not in the defensive secondary… We shall see… No excuses this year.. CPJ needs to win big and he needs to start in Blacksburg. Go Jackets..

Ken, doesn’t the [brackets] mean that you added a word to the quote? Why did you add that to Golden’s quote? Did he really use the word “it”? Can you really assume that he was talking about his opinion? Couldn’t he mean that it doesn’t make a difference in the outcome of the game which helmet we wear?

@Question: I for one do not think we should if we win 8 or more. But his seat would get a little warmer after this season if that is the case. Which coaches could we feasibly hire that would be better than CPJ? I can’t think of any.

GTVegas

I don’t pretend to know more than the coaching staff. Anyone who does is just naive, arrogant or immature. These guys are professonals at what they do (coach) and did not get to where they are by eating fruit loops.

Should we expect everyone to agree with everything they do? I doubt it and it would be foolish o think so.

Are they going to do certain things and not do others that we don’t agree with? I certainly hope so because I, for one, recognize that I have no credentials other than being a fan to think I could do better.

Playing Days at Safety might be a resonable think to think about, but if you don’t think the coaching staff has considered it or that Days has considered it, I believe you would be wrong. I am sure that there are things we do not know or have not considered and I do not have the expectation that CPJ has to explain every decision to each one of us.

If you don’t think that CPJ and his staff are doing what they believe gives us the best chance at winning, then you are solely wrong, probably arrogant, self-absorbed or trying to compensate or short-coming in other areas.

Recognizing what I don’t know and being willing to defer to those that do, is a major reason I am comfortable retired, or semi-retired at 45.

To Question, CPJ will go at least 8-4 this year and probably 9-3. We have two four star QBs about to battle it out at that spot in the spring, and the best depth we have had at TECH all over the field in a long, long time. CPJ missed on the Luellen kid at QB, so it has put him back a year or so at that all important spot in his offense. I think we have a good year this year and next year we explode onto the scene. Just one idiot’s opinion.

TECH needs to get and keep some momentum with a head coach. That has been our biggest problem over the last twenty years. Curry to Alabama, Ross to the Chargers, O’Leary to Notre Dame all interupted things just as they were starting to establish something pretty good on the Flats.

Thats 6 starters from last year!!! Yall are new too…

Your Offense you loose S Hill to the Leage thats only one player but he was a play maker (for the short hard to catch passes that is).

By the way, I point out that WnE shows a total LACK of understanding of Al Groh’s defense by questioning the move of a backup Safety to a starting role just because he isn’t listed as the backup safety directly behind the injured player. If WnE actually had any knowledge of the Al Groh defensive scheme, he would know that the safety positions are interchangable (rather than being your traditional definition of strong safety vs. free safety).

So I present one of two scenarios for WnE’s comments above: either WnE is wilfully and maliciously attacking the GT coaching staff using half-truths and mis-representations OR he has none of the football knowledge he claims to have (since he’s been a “Community” coach and all).

Your commentary is full-o-crap!

Jamal Golden is a CB (CORNER-BACK), and the reason he’s being forced to learn the safety positions is that CPJ does NOT “trust” Co-Ray Carlson the former walk-on that he has at #2 safety behind Holton.

If CPJ were really being HONEST with GT fans about our 2ndary being “deep” then simply move #2 Co-Ray Carlson into Holton’s spot and leave everyone else at their original positions.

Basically by moving Golden into cross-training at Safety CPJ is saying that he doesn’t trust a former walk-on even though he has him at #2 on the Depth Chart behind Holton.

Your crappy diatribe would have made sense IF Golden were already on the depth chart at Safety, but since he is a CB (CORNER-BACK), that only serves to validate what I have been saying for quite a while.

We are very THIN at Safety, just like I said weeks ago!

Learn your GT depth chart and then try to post intelligent commentary, seeking to post anti-WnE commentary only makes you look silly!

If this is correct, Fred Holton will not play on Monday.

I don’t see him having the cajones to ask CPJ for his autograph, he is more of Twitter person, you know, stalking underage boys on Twitter… Thinking Wheenie has any coaching ability is like saying Sandusky would make a great cub scout leader.
