About the Georgia Tech helmets…

No news, but just wanted to clarify a couple things and share some thoughts from the ever-quotable Roddy Jones.

1. The “GT” logo will be added to the helmet when it will be prepared for game use. The Buzz logo is unlikely. The school has sought to use the “GT” mark as its primary brand over the Buzz logo.

2. The helmet and whatever alternate uniform accompanies it almost certainly won’t be used on an ongoing basis. Expect the standard look – gold helmet, white jersey, gold pants at home, gold helmet, white jersey, white pants  on the road – to continue.

3. Yellow jackets, or yellowjackets, do build nests with hexagonal cells. It’s not only honey bees. According to the University of California Integrated Pest Management Program website, “commonly build nests in rodent burrows, but they sometimes select other protected cavities, such as voids in walls and ceilings of houses, as nesting sites.”

4. Schools besides Oregon that have used or will use alternate uniforms – Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Navy, Army, Ohio State, Stanford and Wisconsin. Nebraska’s uniforms … oh, my.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Tom Osborne put these together.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Tom Osborne put these together.

5. I spoke to Roddy Jones this morning for a story for next week about Tevin Washington. At the end, I asked him for his thoughts about the helmets and the trend of alternate uniforms. Per usual, he was insightful and quotable. I’ll yield the floor.

On uniforms as recruiting tool: “Everything in recruiting is about cool. You go places and you want the ‘wow’ factor. That’s why weight rooms are as big and as flashy as they are. That’s why coaches’ offices are as flashy as they are. That’s why facilities keep getting upgraded. It’s obviously to make the (current) players happier and give them the best, but it’s mainly about getting recruits, because it’s the lifeblood of the program. The things that appeal to a 16-, 17-year-old kid are much different than what college graduates think of. What do they look at? They look at the schools that are cool. Obviously, you don’t want a team full of guys who just are there for the uniforms, but if you get one or two guys now and then who came because they think the uniforms are cool, what’s wrong with that?”

“There’s really no downside to it. It’s kind of the ‘in’ thing now, and it’s kind of the college football landscape. When you play in these games, you get cool stuff, you get cool uniforms. It’s as much a fashion show as a football game.”

On if there’s anything to “look good, play good”: Being here and working in here yesterday (as an intern in the GTAA), once I heard that the helmets were new, I went down there to see them for myself. Guys were excited. I can’t speak to how practice was, because I wasn’t out there yesterday. I don’t know. … But if you can give them the extra little bit of pep to get through practice or practice harder, I think it’s done its job.”

6. You may not have been aware, but coincidentally, the Tech men’s basketball team’s new uniforms also made a private debut at the team’s picture day. They are considered a nod to the past (note the similarity with the uniform Rich Yunkus wore) and a bridge to the program’s future. I like the shadow trim. Not a hexagonal cell to be found.

I’m with CPJ on this. If the kids want new uniforms and helments, great. Now change into them and get out there and play football. Because at the end of the day, if that uniform is covered with mud and grass stains like its supposed to be, it won’t matter how shiny or neat it looked in the pre-game. All that will matter was whether you won or lost in that uniform. So get out there and execute the game plan and Win, Jackets! I’ll be in Blacksburg rooting the team on.

Good luck against VT. I pull for y’all x-cept against us. I must say changing uniforms did not help us last year….Boise State wore our o-line out! (Not the unforms fault, but still.) As I stated earlier, though, those helmets are uglier than Bruce Willis’s daughter “Scout!”

well done, WnE.
I actually took out the line about there not being a hexagonal cell to be found. i’m not positive the gold side panel on the shorts doesn’t have it. i’ve asked.

Remember Boise St wore special uniforms for the UGA game, so it may have helped them, people talk like UGA was the only team with a new uniform in that game.

@Big Time TechFan,
I reckon’ we harped so much on our uni’s last year ‘coz we felt jinxed by them. B-State whooped us so badly up front (our o-line got schooled) that for SOME reason, we blamed the uniforms!

@Big Time;
You are so right……I think we could have worn gladiator armour or whatever, and B-State still would have torn up our o-line. I’m a real Dawg fan, through and through. However, I can recognize a good old-fashioned tail-whoopin, and thats what B-State gave our o-line last year. Hopefully, we will be better. We’re pretty good everywhere else, but ‘Bama and LSU are way ahead because of the stud-horses up front. Our d-line will be okay….o-line still suspect at best.

My favorite GT basketball uniforms were the gold ones that they wore in 1985-86 – although maybe seeing who was wearing them (Price Salley, Hammonds, Dalrymple, Ferrell) had something to do with it.

Just an expression…..I was just leavin’ the post! I have fun on them, though, and lately they have been gettin’ you riled up! Blackouts, new uni’s, etc. I don’t care WHOSE idea it is, it has not helped us. I’d rather just get some o-linemen in here so we coud become RELEVANT (HA HA) again. I reckon’ I should not have compared y’alls helmets to Scout Willis…….they could never be that bad!

Almost all, if not all, alternate or new, football uniforms look horrible. Take Notre Dame for instance. Yikes! This proposed alternate uniform for Tech is no exception to horrible. And I really don’t recall improved on field performance of any team playing is any alternate uniform. Take UGA for instance. They’ve done this several times and to my memory they have lost at least most of those games. The uniform does not make the team.
The new Tech basketball uniforms look good except for the capri pants instead of shorts. B-ball “shorts” have clearly gotten out of control.

What’s with all these “new” weirdo, supposedly ‘futuristic’ uniforms? They’re ugly and tacky. The Jackets need to stick w/ the gold or white (throwback) helmets. Scandal aside…PSU has always had nice, old fashioned uniforms. Enough with this constant re-branding/packaging already.

With all the GT students being victims of violent crime and theft, as well as GT sports fans getting fleeced (no pun intended) by having to buy all this “alternate” paraphernalia sports companies put to market in order to stay current with the team trends and fashion, should the school change its mascot to a yellow jacket holding up its hands at gunpoint with its pockets empty?
