1. Georgia Tech may have new headgear to show off for its nationally-televised season opener on Monday. It’s possible new uniforms are coming, too.
Said Tech spokesman Wayne Hogan, “We’ve got a lot of things in the pipeline.”
Wednesday, multiple Yellow Jackets players posted a photo of a new helmet on their Twitter accounts that drew instant reaction, positive and negative. The photo and messages hinting that it would be worn in Monday’s game against Virginia Tech were taken down soon after they were posted.
Hogan acknowledged that the helmet – white with adjoining hexagonal cells outlined in gold, suggesting a yellow jacket nest – was legitimate, though he didn’t know if it would be worn against the Hokies. The helmet will have the interlocking “GT” logo applied when it is used for a game. Monday, Tech will wear its white road uniforms with blue trim.
The team and outfitter Russell Athletic have worked on new designs for a uniform, Hogan said, with many different combinations of helmets, jerseys and pants in the mix. He said nothing is “significantly different” from Tech’s uniforms of late, although it would be difficult to describe the white helmet as anything less than that.
“What we’re trying to do is give some options of several different things that we think the players will enjoy being a part of,” Hogan said.
To the delight of some fans and horror of others, alternate uniforms have become the rage in college football, notably Oregon and Maryland. A segment of Tech’s fan base has called for untraditional uniform designs to keep up with the trend, which some believe can help in recruiting. Reaction on Twitter to the white helmet ranged from “pretty cool” to “yuck!!!” to “they look like a golf ball.”
“I just feel like we need to come up with some Russell combat uniform or something,” said quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days, referring to Nike’s Pro Combat uniforms. “I feel like it should be something crazy, but I’m not sure if our alumni would [go for] that because it’s a tradition, white and gold.”
2. On the ACC coaches teleconference on Wednesday, coach Paul Johnson and Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer were queried on a popular topic in advance of any game in which Tech’s opponent has extra time to prepare – whether or not the added practice time helps the opposing defense get ready for the Jackets’ option-based spread offense.
“I think that’s helpful,” Beamer said. “You see this offense one time a year, and having a little extra time to work on that part of it, I do think that’s a benefit. The other thing is, no matter who you put out there, our scout team can’t run it like their team, that’s for sure.”
“I’ve never really bought into all that,” Johnson said. “I think you’ve got more time to get ready, we’ve got more time to get ready for them. It works out pretty much the same. I might be in the minority, but that part, I’ve never really thought much about it or worried about it that much.”
3. There were no injury updates following Wednesday’s practice, as coaches or players were not made available to media. Defensive players and coaches will be available Thursday, followed by Johnson’s news conference on Friday.

WnE — Saban is a genius.
Tyrene Jones is gonna steal the POY in the state of Ga this year!!
Who offered first? Where’s he committed?
____________
Actually CPJ offered Tyren Jones first but since he’s a terrible recruiter he was there for Bama to get him.
I’m no Mutt fan ,but when you sign Marshall & Gurley in 2012. it would be hard for a back of Jones’ pedigree to still choose UGA, I’m sure that’s what you were hinting at.

A note to all of you Yellow Jackets out there:
I am now president of the Athens chapter of the Paul Johnson Fan Club.
You would not believe how the club is growing. We had to move the meetings from the IHOP to the Western Sizzlin because of the crowds.
We love Paul Johson in Athens. Don’t you guys ever fire him.
Ignor the fact that he cannot recruit at the 1A level. I mean face it, ever since Chan Gaileys players left, the only decent guys you have had are the ones that transferred in because they wanted to be closer to home – or were run off by their origional schools.
Yep, Paul Johnson will soon have Tech as the strongest 1AA team in America. You might even venture to schedule Georgia Southern without the fear of being beat.
We sort of look at Paul Johnson as the coaching equivalent of Reggie Ball at Tech. And you know how much we revere Reggie.
Reggie!!! Reggie!! Reggie!!
So you guys take good care of Paul Johnson because we want him in Atlanta for a loooong time.
Sincerely, your fellow Paul Johnson fans in Athens.

say hello to the only people who should be voting for mitt romney in 2012:
“And not all of those tax units represent the working class.
Nine million nonpayers, or 12.8 percent of the total, are in the middle income quintile. Another 1.9 million — 2.6 percent of the total — are in the second-highest quintile, and some 443,000, or 0.6 percent of the total, are in the top quintile.
The Tax Policy Center breaks down that last number a bit further: There are 78,000 non-paying units in the top 95th to 99th income percentile, 24,000 in the top 1 percentile, and 3,000 in the top tenth of a percentile.
This group has a nickname, too: they’re the HINTs, for high income, no taxes.
These might be people who get their income from tax-exempt bonds or overseas sources, as CNN reported last year.
Or they might be people who have incurred losses from partnerships or S Corporations. Or people who have run up “extraordinary” medical or dental bills. As The Fiscal Times noted in December, these are other ways to realize one’s HINT status.”

You know they will run, block and tackle, good coach. I know Georgia got into that and lost their opener last year. No team is so good they can take their mind off the game and onto uniforms.

@ w w w …. I am a middle-class American living on a pension which I earned after 33 years of employment and social security into which I was FORCED to pay TAXES every one of those 33 years. My gross income is just at modest but sufficient, certainly nothing to brag about. I have a limited number of investments in IRA’s into which I voluntarily deposited money during my employment years. According to you, I should not be voting for Romney, but I would vote for ANYBODY over that socialist POS in the White House now. He inherited a mess from Bush and instead of living up to his promise to get us out of the mess, he has dug the hole even deeper. He has not accomplished one damn thing for me or anybody else in this country, other than the unions, in four years, and it’s time to get his ass out of there. Even Newsweek magazine, a decidedly liberal publication, agrees.
