New helmets for Georgia Tech?

Multiple Georgia Tech players posted Twitter pictures of a helmet that may see action on Monday night in the season opener against Virginia Tech.

“We do have a second helmet that we have to wear a few times in practice in case we want to wear it during the season,” Tech spokesman Dean Buchan said.

Quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days tweeted a photo of the helmet with the message “New helmets … Lets Get It 9/3.” (The photo below is from his account.)

The helmet is white with adjoining hexagons, creating a yellow jacket nest motif. It is a rather significant departure from Tech’s traditional gold helmet and is an answer to the cries of many fans and some players for a fresher look. Tech will wear its white road uniform with blue trim.

“I just feel like we need to come up with some Russell combat uniforms or something,” Days said last week.

Looks Stupid.. Solid White With A Gold GT and Gold Trim.. If we are going to change anything. ” Golf Ball ” is About Right!

. . . . . . There is no GT on the helmet. I’m only 19, and am currently a student at the Institute, and those look horrendous. We aren’t Maryland, we aren’t Oregon, and we sure as hell don’t need some gimmick uniform out on the field, particularly when the helmet looks pretty close to a damn golf ball. Please stick with the originals and don’t pull a UGA from the opening game last season . . .

The first test w/ any uniform change is to put it on the players and send the students or selected fans to the upper deck seats. If they can notice a difference and see clearly what was intended, you proceed with the uniform selection process.

My guess is that light grey honeycombs on a white helmut, during a day game will be like wearing a plain white helmut.

OldGold has it right. As a student and life long GT fan, you don’t mess with the standard look and go with a gimmick. Schutt needs new design people on their team . . .

I like it for a change. Tired of seeing the same thing every year. Need a change and not to mention uniforms are important to the players. If the players like it, the fans should like them too.

Haters, that may be, but why put off a fan base that already doesn’t come to the damn games to begin with. Last thing we need is for fans to not come because the uniforms look like crap. I’d much rather see us keep tradition rather than go with something that looks like a silver golf ball . . .

This is most likely just a practice helmet. One commenter even said we’ll have the GT on the side… I am curious if the rest of the uni will look different. I did enjoy the throwback with the white helmet the team wore a few years ago

Hey, I am an old guy, but I recognize that uniforms can attract recruits. Hell, GT is the seat of engineering innovation, why can’t they show a little open-mindedness?

I like the intent to create an alternative look, I just don’t think the boring white. My suggestion would be to keep the same honey comb pattern with a honey-colored background. Add a yellow jacket or GT to the side and you have a different look that will please the younger crowd.

I don’t care if they play with squirrels with crayons on their heads if they play well Monday. I would like to see the old yellow jacket on the side though.

Love them. Rumors of uniforms to go with them that will be changed into after the warmups. I love that TECH is tradition but a new helmet or Awesome throwbacks do attract recruits and tech needs some if Groh is going to keep his job.

I think that a GT on the side is too much. Everyone is complaining about this is too far from tradition. If you add a GT it ends up look like someone dropped it in the trash and didn’t wipe it off…piling stuff on doesn’t add anything

Helmet is atrocious. Best uniform look the Jackets had was the 1990-1992 era. Either way, Tech’s and UGA’s uniforms (and logos) both suck compared to Southern’s.

OldGold1964 I will have to respectfully disagree with your statement regarding tradition. I believe The Georgia Institute of Technology is all about Innovation rather than Tradition.

We have some of the best engineering schools in the world that are constantly innovating and creating new technologies, and have been since 1885. Yes, we have our traditions, but they are not going away. We are not getting rid of the Whistle, Ramblin’ Wreck, or Tech Tower. They are merely changing the design of the uniforms for some games. It’s not like we have always worn the exact same uniform since the beginning of football. In the 50’s & 60’s we wore white and won some MNC’s. In the 70’s we wore mustard yellow. In 1990 we wore navy and won a MNC.

The purpose of these uniforms are to get the players and future recruits jazzed up about being a Yellow Jacket. For guys like us, we are jazzed up anyway because we love Ma Tech. For a 17 year old recruit talking with UF, Clemson, UNC, UGA, and Auburn who doesn’t give a rip about what we did before he was born, it might make a difference. The helmets are not what I probably would have designed, but I like them well enough and applaud Russell and the GTAA for finally innovating.

Wow. Look, this is probably not for more than just this one game, guys. Also, they WILL have the interlocking GT logo on them. You don’t have to wear it, so cut these younger guys some slack. The players like it, so for one huge game chill out and let them wear something they like!

The traditional stuff isn’t changing for good; this is just a fun switchup so the kids can feel good for a big game.

Our fan base is surprisingly opinionated for being so apathetic about showing up to games. How about this – you’re allowed an opinion on something as insignificant as the uniforms if you hold season tickets.

Serious irony here. Look at all the Tech fans saying to not mess with tradition yet how many uniform changes and combinations has Tech had in the past 20 years alone? Let’s expand that to 50 years and see the number keep rising.

It’s not the end of the world guys. Normally I’d love to see Tech fans in agony but unfortunately this reminds me too much of UGA’s recent history.

For the record, the blackout worked pretty well against Auburn and Hawaii but crashed and burned against Alabama. Black pants and helmets didn’t work against Florida but recent history says odds are UGA doesn’t fair well against Florida in general.

Stress if you want to…*Shrug*

Everybody has an opinion but some things just look better than others (and backed up by the opinion of the masses). My opinion is, unless your traditional look is one that JUST DOESN’T LOOK GOOD, leave it alone. GT has a good look, and at least the helmet has been the same for decades. The little girly piping, cutout panels, etc. on the uniforms they’ve messed with over the past decade DOESN’T look good. Stick with tradition. Unless your traditional look is like the Cleveland Browns.

Maybe they should keep the honeycomb design and have each hexagon filled in with a different color. Or maybe they ought to fill the hexagons in with black on the front and transition across the helmet to gold or white in the back.

Expect a GT on the helmet by the time they wear them, there’s no way they stay blank like this.

I expect that the combs will be used on the new jerseys as well. Hopefully they keep it simple and use combs to construct stripes, either on the sleeves or on the shoulders (like UCLA stripes).

I think they look great and I’m old. I would prefer the GT logo on as well, but not required. I also like the uniforms that wear today, once they fixed the numbers last year so you could actually see them from the stands.

I am very much a traditionalist when it comes to uniforms (yes, I am over 35). I think the GT logo on the side looks good and is simple but unique. I don’t think subtle changes to helments or uniforms is all that bad and if Tech wants to incorporate the honey comb on the helment do it in black on the old gold helment and keep the GT. I am not a fan of white helments in any shape form or fashion although the Auburn helment looks nice. They have enough color and the AU on the side to offset too much white. I am sure many Tech fans on this site could care less what a Dawg fan has to say on this subject but I really do like the traditional Tech uniforms and helment. Even the new design looks 10 times better than that combat crap that UGA opened up with last year. Thank goodness that was only for one game.
