New helmets for Georgia Tech?

Multiple Georgia Tech players posted Twitter pictures of a helmet that may see action on Monday night in the season opener against Virginia Tech.

“We do have a second helmet that we have to wear a few times in practice in case we want to wear it during the season,” Tech spokesman Dean Buchan said.

Quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days tweeted a photo of the helmet with the message “New helmets … Lets Get It 9/3.” (The photo below is from his account.)

The helmet is white with adjoining hexagons, creating a yellow jacket nest motif. It is a rather significant departure from Tech’s traditional gold helmet and is an answer to the cries of many fans and some players for a fresher look. Tech will wear its white road uniform with blue trim.

“I just feel like we need to come up with some Russell combat uniforms or something,” Days said last week.

This has got to rank as one of the DUMBEST ideas ever. it’s up there with writing “Terps” or “Gators” on your helmet. Go back to the traditional helmet. This smells like those hip hop singers with the national anthem. STINKS!

@GT Rich, you have a Run Time Logic Error. The changes to the phone system you talk about are functional changes for the system to operate more efficiently. The helmet issue is not about function but esthetics, which by the way is totally subjective.

That stripe down the center sure is not team colors! My guess is that the guys at Russell Southern Co. have never done this before.

These helmets are perfect for GT. They look like one’s brais fried on meth. Perfect for GT fans everywhere to show off how they are intellectually superior to the rest of the world. Great helmets for a TECH school.

If we’re scraping tradition, perhaps we could put an equation on the side of the helmet like E=mc2 (Bee a light to others) or the triple integral for solving the volume of a sphere—what a great message it would send to the kids: Bee Smart!!!

It looks like chicken wire. Does not anyone in GTAA have imagination to come up with an innovative design? If not, stay with the gold helmits. Notre Dame has used gold helmits to grow tradition. We should do likewise.

This is absolutely awful. “Trendy” uniforms as a recruiting tool is BS. The last I checked Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas, Flroida, Georgia, etc. don’t have to resort to such ugly stuff designed by someone on Fifth Ave. who knows nothing about football. (And when they have, i.e., UGA last year, they’ve quickly gone in the basement….). Tech HAS a rich tradition — great colors and great uniforms. The last I checked, the newfangled uniforms they’ve worn the past few years have done nothing for their recruiting. In fact, it’s apparently, gotten worse. Radokovich and Johnson need to wise up and not screw with the traditional uniforms that were unique and good-looking to satisfy the whim of some teenagers and athletic apparel company that don’t know what the hell their doing.

This has to be a joke – right? God that is ugly. Why on earth would anyone want to use this design. I would not even give that to UGA to use – well, maybe I would do that.

Yes I am over 35 (actually 45) – I think if the players like it, that is what matters. For all of those that are hard core Old Gold and White – Get over it. I like tradition as much as the next person, but the players of today have to have some part of this that they feel is their own. Let then wear the new styles and have a little SWAGGER!

If they’d just use the navy uniform which is the best looking. I don’t have a problem with the helmet. The white baseball batting helmets were a total dud – at least this one looks better. Not sure they will save Johnson’s job.

Well, the players like the change, what happens next year when the “kids” want a new look and 2 years later. Who knows what we’ll look like then, right.? Taking care of the players.? Better take care of those who pay the bills.

Rem. Dodd retired in ‘66, new coach wanted to make his egotistical “mark” with uni changes and a white helmet to freshen things up. Promptly went 27-27 next 5 years and out the door. That’s where D Rad needs to go.

GT FAN—I love ya but you’re so wrong. I’m hard core White and Old Gold. Straight up front, I saw my first Tech game well b/4 you were born, b/4 most of you were born and have no idea how much I’ve spent here, in $ and tears and that has to count for something. New fans are good but why does one feel like he must change things. People are born with SWAGGER, it’s not something you wear. I doubt any of the fine kids we have now were told, “if you’ll sign with us we’ll change the uniforms.” Do we really want players who come to us because of some freakish looking uni, not me, not this “hard core old schooler alum.” You young whippersnappers should have some respect for history and tradition, along with the disrepectful athletic administration. I hear TCU callin…..

I’m a gold hat, white shirt and gold pants with black and white stripes on ‘em or same pants, navy shirts and gold hat kind of guy. I like the use of Old Gold even tho it is not a beautiful gold it is our gold. Do you think there is kick back goin on here with Russell.? I know I’ll never buy a piece of Russell again and told them so. Doubt if it broke their heart. Voiced anger at drad 3 yrs ago about uni change and he actually said he didn’t care. I wish GT fans had pull with their school like fans at other schools. I’ll be ashamed of this crap if they put it on Grant Field.
