Bobby Cremins to assist GTAA

A Georgia Tech legend has returned to the fold in full. Former men’s basketball coach Bobby Cremins, who retired from coaching in March, will assist the Tech athletic department in alumni outreach and other activities to support coach Brian Gregory’s program.

Gregory has spoken with respect and admiration for Cremins since his hire. The two had known each other prior to Gregory’s hire and Cremins has reached out to him since he became the Yellow Jackets coach in March 2011. The two will speak at a news conference Wednesday to discuss Cremins’ involvement.

Cremins coached Tech from 1981 to 2000, putting together a record of 354-237 while winning three ACC championships and making 10 NCAA tournament appearances. After a five-year sabbatical, Cremins finished his coaching career with six seasons at the College of Charleston.

Yippee! Best news (sports or otherwise) I’ve heard in long, long time.

We love “our Bobby” and know he will do great for GT in whatever activities he is involved in. And so glad he has something worthwile to keep him active. This is a win-win deal for both.

You teckies say what you want, but he was a helluva coach. He put y’all on the map in hoops, and will be a positive addition, for sure.

Bobby rocks. Gregory is a great coach and understands the history that is GT. Hewitt was awful and never reached out – even while he was burying our program!

Welcome home Coach Cremins.
I would love to see students wearing white wigs one game, and Coach Gregory also wearing one just for a moment. That would be really fun and show that CBG gets it.

Drexel Gal, Bobby might not be the most articulate guy but he is definitely intelligent. Maybe more street smarts than anything else but you don’t get to his positions without some kind of smarts.

And Whack Hyder, RIP, is dead. Very classy Drexel Gal…not.

Brilliant move! Bobby put the program on the map and is and always has been a class act as is Gregory for the clarity to see this. New joint to play in and Bobby, I’ll be coming to more games this year for sure.

Fantastic move for the program. It never really seemed right that Cremins left and ended up coaching somewhere else — when the GT home court had his name on it! (I presume it still will in the upgraded facility?!).

And this should not be seen as an affront to Hewitt–who surely himself recognized that he was replacing a GT legend (if not an absolute John Wooden coach of the ages). Unfortunately, though some in this blog already have, I hope the Tech community will not further use this as an opportunity to bash Hewitt (or his contract)… or somehow fault him for not having involved Bobby earlier. The timing / situation weren’t right back then–but they seem perfect now…

Let’s get everybody feeling positive that the glory of what GT basketball was (both with Cremins, and yes, with Hewitt, for at least a year)–can be again! Can somebody give a Ramblin’ Wreck, an Amen!!?

p.s. 1985 was a great team — but 1990’s lethal weapon three could’ve taken ‘em! Tech 1990 really hung with UNLV in the Final Four…before that jailbreak of a team and program won and went on to crush Duke in the 1990 final…

@gt4ever – “legend is a little strong”…

??? I beg to differ. There is not a single person more recognizably associated with Georgia Tech than Bobby Cremins. Even a decade + after he left Tech, he is instantly associated with Georgia Tech.

Name anyone else whose picture would cause (average) people to think Georgia Tech? There is no one.

Not Bobby Dodd, not Bobby Dodd, not Homer Rice nor any athlete.

Bobby Cremins will forever be known as the white haired coach of Georgia Tech. And that is a great thing for yellow jackets fans and alums.

Fantastic. Love Bobby Cremins and I’m glad that he is back with the Tech program. Great for community outreach because people love the guy.

I would have come back for community outreach, but I’m too busy working on winning an NCAA title here at George Mason.

growing up in North Carolina around a bunch of UNC and Duke fans was very tough. I despised both programs and attached myself to the GT program because of Cremin’s flair and attitude. Since then, I’ve been a big part of GT athletics, donating $$ and time to a school that I never attended… (all out of hatred for UNC and Duke and the love for CBC). Sad but true. Welcome back Bobby C!

Good, now Tech can switch back to the short gym shorts Cremins’ teams wore instead of continung to wear the long, boxer shorts-style “gym” shorts which are not gymnastic shorts, but are instead exhibitionist underwear shorts, and they can discontinue chomping on chewing gum as if they are playing inner city street ball.

The late Whack Hyder was my coach, and he gave me an “A” in required basketball course during Winter Quarter of 1971. He was the coach who coached Tech to a win over national champ Kentucy in the old gym at Tech under the North Stands. My dad, a Tech grad, took me to that game, and I only remember the male students making sounds there. Roger Kaiser was the Tech star. Kentucky had not lost a game in something like 2 years. Whack was a good guy.

As happened with Coach Johnson, I think we made a great hire in Coach Gregory. Bringing Bobby Crimmins back into the program is icing on the cake. What fun and good news. Way to go Tech and welcome back Bobby.
