‘Ragged’ scrimmage closes Georgia Tech camp
1. After two weeks of grinding through preseason practice, Georgia Tech’s players were ready to check out of the team hotel and end fall camp. Evidently, their play in a Saturday morning scrimmage reflected it.
“It was a little bit ragged,” said coach Paul Johnson, who finished his opening remarks following the closed scrimmage with an underwhelming line. “All in all, there were a lot of mistakes.”
The first-team offense turned around its performance after getting stopped by the first-team defense on the opening series, scoring multiple touchdowns on possessions starting from its 30-yard line. The second-team offense showed considerable improvement from last week, Johnson said.
Johnson liked the progress that the team has made over the first 18 practices (11 remain before the opener at Virginia Tech Sept. 3), but not Saturday’s roughly 90-play scrimmage.
“It was good, but I would have liked to have seen it maybe end with a little more energy like the first scrimmage,” center Jay Finch said. “But, I mean, camp’s long and tedious. It’s expected.”
B-back Broderick Snoddy, possibly the fastest player on the team, provided fireworks by going untouched on a 70-yard touchdown run early on, but his fitness level could not sustain him through the whole morning. Snoddy had also been a candidate to play A-back, but has worked at B-back for most of camp.
“He’s more comfortable at [B-back],” quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon said. “That’s what he did his senior year of high school. I think that’s probably going to be home for him.”
2. After a poor performance in the team’s first scrimmage last Saturday, quarterback Vad Lee rebounded by leading multiple touchdown drives with the first- and second-team offenses. Among his highlights were a 38-yard run down the right sideline on an option keeper and two passes to A-back B.J. Bostic, one for an 11-yard score and a 28-yarder over the middle to set up another touchdown. (Scrimmage details were provided by the Tech sports information staff.)
“There’s a lot we can improve on, starting with myself,” Lee said. “But I think we did fairly well [Saturday].”
The backup spot between Lee and Synjyn Days figures to be fluid. They entered camp as co-No. 2, but Lee was dropped to No. 3 after last week. Days, however, has also been trying to earn a spot in the A-back rotation. How much Days figures to play at A-back will be a factor.
“We’ll sit down as a staff and talk about this scrimmage and where things are if something happens to Tevin (Washington), who’s the next guy up?” Bohannon said.
3. Defensive coordinator Al Groh has concerns about his crew of young linebackers. Tech signed seven in 2011.
“We have a lot of young guys who, the developmental cycle has just got to accelerate beyond what would be normal, so every day is part of that,” Groh said. “We still have a lot of competition for those spots. Maybe some of the performances from [Saturday] will dictate the depth chart a little bit.”
As of last week, three of those seven – outside linebacker Tyler Marcodes and inside linebackers Tremayne McNair and Jabari Hunt-Days – were on the second string. Redshirts are possible for sophomores who played as true freshmen last year – Nick Menocal, Kyle Travis and McNair. Groh said he hasn’t seen the type of individual progress to make depth-chart and redshirt choices obvious.
“I think we need to, at this stage, find quality guys to play in the game,” he said. Redshirting “will be another issue.”
4. Johnson said that coaches “kind of know” what the A-back rotation will be, and that, as of Saturday, the starters would be Orwin Smith and Robbie Godhigh. The versatile and explosive Smith has been a given. Godhigh has been competing with A-backs Deon Hill, B.J. Bostic, Tony Zenon and, starting in camp, Days. Godhigh, a former walk-on, came into camp leading the competition. The team will likely use a three- or four-player rotation.

6. Moved up to second string last Sunday, B-back Zach Laskey continued to work with the first string as starter David Sims stayed on the sidelines. Sims had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his shin over the summer. … Wide receiver Jeff Greene, offensive tackle Ray Beno and guard Omoregie Uzzi participated after being held out previously. Cornerback Rod Sweeting and offensive tackle Morgan Bailey continued to be sidelined, along with Sims and Perkins. … Classes begin Monday, Johnson’s 55th birthday.

Sounds like a good finish to camp. I have a feeling it will be a down season for Sims. Stress fracture in the shin can take awhile to heal and get strength back. BTW, first??

Snoddy out of shape? Not good. Maybe he can play special teams/return KOs or punts and get a series or two at B-back. With Sims hurt—it will probably be platooned—Laskey, Perkins, Snoddy.

After what TW endured in Blacksburg 2 years ago it would be so sweet to see him pull this off. Vad’s going to play some and I trust CPJ to get him in the mix. Snoddy speed needs to get him some designed plays at BB. That position is shaping up depth wise with 4 guys ready to go. Bostic making plays at AB catching the ball will loosen up the D. Need to see Days in at AB.
Ken, how much did the 1st team D play? I cant tell if our O is that much better or our D is still struggling? Also, coach BB said of Snoddy “thats what he did his senior your in HS” did they run GT offense or was Snoddy a halfback/tailback?

I think we are starting to see that CPJ has now been able to build up enough depth at most spots so we don’t have such a drop off when the first guy goes down for a while. In fact, it probably creates quite a bit of motivation to get back on the field before you lose your spot. Still need to build some depth at NT with Barnes gone after this year. Are there any of the OLine guys that could move over in the spring for that spot.

Snoddy at B-back is an intriguing development. He’s obviously the fastest, but has the most to learn, also.
BTTF – yes, Hunt-Days at second string takes into account Daniel Drummond being first string. I’d think Hunt-Days will start against Virginia Tech, ready or not.
Fuzzybee – not sure, but I’d think they played as many possessions as the first-team offense. as for snoddy and his h.s. offense, looks similar.

Not sure if I want Vad starting the opener in Blacksburg, but Tech sure might need his passing should they find themselves behind in the fourth quarter. Tevin has proven he can run the option as well as anyone, but he’s also proven that he’s an ineffective passer.

I agree with Ken, “VT will outscore GT” seems down right tepid after reading Gorilla Biscuit’s rather rude comments about Reuben Foster’s mother and sister. It is one thing to attack a player or a program, But a real man goes after the family.
I know he can do better, but don’t really care to see it.

I hope and expect Tevin Washington to start and play 90%+ of the offensive snaps in the opener. Any scenario other than that might not mean good things for the Jackets. Say what you want but Tevin has proven his capability to lead the team to victory. I hope he starts and remains the starter for the entire season. Vad Lee — only a FR-RS — should hopefully get to work in situationally and start to build his game experience. He may be hugely talented, but the ideal scenario would be for him to gain experience in favorable situations before getting the entire burden foisted upon him. We’ll see. I expect Tevin to have a real good year, including PASSING the football…. I’m confident he will. Let’s see starting 9/3…..

Sounds like things are starting to come togeather. I have lots of worries about the D but only some game time will show if the worries are justified. I think the O is going to rock. Orwin is a horse and having Bostic back is a huge plus. If some of the new people like Snoddy, Jackson and Green turn out to be good competitors we may surprise.

John is code for toilet. However, CPJ has been more giddy about this team than I’ve ever seen him regarding other teams since his arrival at Tech. If you’ve ever played football, it wouldn’t be TOO difficult to recognize a coach’s effort in challenging his team’s own thoughts towards their abilities. A good coach is never satisfied….CPJ is a GOOD coach.

VT has nine coming back on defense. If our defense is improved we win this game, and VT has shown weakness on offense in the past. VT has seen our offense and being the first game of the season have had a lot of time to get ready, but CPJ has seen their defense for four years and knows what to expect. You can do a lot more unexpected things on offense than defense but we can’t let VT stay on the field offensively.

I know I’m gettin’ old when I’m 6 years older than CPJ as a Tech grad. If I am older, then I implore CPJ to get back wth the old-type gold of his first year’s all white unis which were a color combination winner with every Tech player and fan. The mustard gold was close enough to appear as old gold. I see it as a mental problem on the part of somebody, whether it be CPJ or Radikovich, or both, to disregard those unis’ popularity and success.

Couple thoughts. VT took over the 4th Qtr last year. Popular version is that JA’s personal foul penalty was the turning point. IMO – Jackets were out of shape and VT was mentally tougher in the 4th quarter. They wanted it more.
Fast forward to the Sugar Bowl. Beamer coached very poorly in the 2nd half of that game. IMO – coach B lost that game for VT.
IF (huge if)…. Jackets are truly in better shape this year,
IF, the defensive interior (line and LBs) is better this year,
IF, the O-line is solid and TW plays well, then
GT can get a lead into the 4th and show us they want to be Champions.
Beamer’s Hokies will come apart if GT has a lead and applies pressure in the 4th Qtr. Would love to see Bud Foster augur in with his D giving up 50 to the Jackets. Dude might implode on national TV.

@ crackbaby…..I DO think JA’s personal foul was the turning point. Tech had momentum at that point, and a deep stop on VT would probably have put Tech in good enough field position to score. Then regardless of being out of shape, and you’re probably right there, I think Tech would have been able to hold on. We will never know though

I also envision major changes in Tech’s unis, such as return to white helmets, at least for some of the games, perhaps the home games. Us old timers from white helmet years of ‘71-2 seasons get discriminated against by the use of only gold helmets. We are senior citizens now, why disregard us as non-Tech grads?

This game will come down to mistakes and who makes the most in front of an aggressive sellout VT crowd on national television. Being the first game and all, it won’t necessarily be about talent but about conditioning and mistakes. Will GT fumble it’s way to the bus early and can it’s D disrupt enough to neutralize the mobility of D Wilson?

As a former coach I just don”t see TW as a winner. He is a good athlete and does a good job at QB however when the game is on the line and the clock is running down he does not have what it takes to win the game. JN was that kind of player. On more than one occasion he single handed drove TECH to the win. I just don’t trust TW when the game is on the line. He has proved that more than once since he has been the starting QB. I hope I’m wrong.
