Ice-cream truck closes Georgia Tech’s double sessions

Practice notes from Wednesday.

1. A day after getting chastised, Georgia Tech got ice-cream bars and popsicles.

To celebrate the final two-a-day practice, coach Paul Johnson surprised the team mid-practice by bringing an ice-cream truck onto the Rose Bowl practice fields Wednesday afternoon. Players swarmed the truck for their frozen treats. Even the head coach partook.

“Look at me,” Johnson said. “You think I missed out on ice cream?”

Former team member Logan Walls, seeing pictures posted on Facebook, wrote, “Where was this the past 5 camps?”

The 90-minute afternoon practice was conducted without pads, focusing mostly on special teams. The Yellow Jackets went in full pads in the morning practice, which followed a Tuesday afternoon practice that irritated coaches for its lack of energy. Johnson called the morning practice “a little better.”

The Jackets had three double sessions and will have single practices Thursday and Friday and a closed scrimmage Saturday to close the camp portion of the preseason. Players will check out of the team hotel Saturday and begin classes Monday, at which point the team will adopt its standard afternoon practice routine.

“I’ve had no issues with them overall,” Johnson said. “They’ve worked hard for the most part.”

Cornerback Rod Sweeting was held out again Wednesday after trying to practice Tuesday. Guard Omoregie Uzzi also was kept out of the afternoon practice. B-backs David Sims and Charles Perkins and offensive tackles Ray Beno and Morgan Bailey did not practice again.

(I don’t know more about Uzzi’s status. I learned about it after Johnson spoke. If the way he was walking back to the locker room is any judge, I don’t suspect it’s serious.)

2. Quarterback/A-back Synjyn Days spent the entire morning practice working at A-back. He has spent much of camp at that position to try to acclimate himself. With Days backing up quarterback Tevin Washington, coaches want to get him on the field to use his playmaking ability. Johnson believes he could make it into the rotation.

“That’s why we put him there,” he said. “We didn’t put him there to be a backup.”

3. Johnson spoke well of Tech hall of famer and former Tech coach Bill Curry, who announced Wednesday that he will retire from coaching Georgia State at the end of the season.

“I’ve never had a close relationship (with Curry), but always respected him from afar,” he said. “I think he’s a guy that’s tried to do things the right way.”

There is no media availability until Saturday’s closed scrimmage. I’ll have some notes I didn’t get to Thursday and Friday.

Thanks for reading.

But Paul in NH, just read the post after you, cause regaurdless of who’s eating what, 7-5 is about right. I agree with Super, I do not believe VT is going to be as good as last year on offense in the first game.
Yes there D is better but so is our O!!! We have always scored points on these guys and I dont think they will be able to put up enough with a limited number of possessions. GT by 3 to 7 points is not fantasy land and Mark Bradley agrees.

@ Big L……nobody forced you to read what was posted on a TECH BLOG. If you don’t like the reference to what happens in Athens, that’s tough. It wasn’t even a slam; just a comment that ice cream was better than watermelon. What’s so bad about saying that? I would rather have ice cream than watermelon too. And besides, get off your high horse; you know far worse things are said on the UGA blogs about Tech every day of the week.

Ice cream for these young men is a super fine idea. At that age, they can eat all they want – I’m jealous. And not to worry, but they’ll burn it off quickly if I know anything about CPJ and Big Al.
This is the time of year when everyone starts fresh, no one has lost a game and the alumni are starting to slaver. Toe meets leather can’t come soon enough – even if it’s in Blacksburg.
Good luck to the Jackets, no injuries – and catch them passes!

Breaks at 2-a day practices is not new. Coach Bobby Dodd had what were called “Sprite breaks” when Bill Curry played at Ga Tech in the early 60’s. He did these (most days) during the summer two a days. How do I know? I was there!!

You rang GT71?

I don’t guess we will know how serious all of these nagging injuries are until close 9/3. Looks like we will find out in a hurry how good our two deep roster is for 2012. With Young out for sure, we have to have Sweeting back on the field or it could make for a long Labor Day evening.

Big question mark for TECH football history. How would the last twenty years have played out if Curry had turned the Tide down in 86′(?). He had some pretty good momentum going. Oh well, “Ifs and buts, candy and nuts”.

Bill Curry is a very good friend of the family… He is an outstanding person, character second to none. I still can’t believe that he went to Alabama…. The only negative issue we have with him.. lol… But hey, for all he did for Alabama, they treated him like trash…. So I guess all things worked out..

@ ToeMeetsLeather….with all due respect to Curry as an honorable man, he was a terrible football coach. I was glad he left when he did, and I was not alone in that feeling. Yes, he beat the dwags twice, but he lost to them 5 times. And he lost to Furman. FURMAN!!!! Enuf said
