Tech drags through 13th practice

Notes from practice. More Wednesday.

1. Georgia Tech’s 13th practice of fall camp brought little good fortune.

A day after a double session and in afternoon heat, the Yellow Jackets dragged through a full-pads practice Tuesday that elicited the ire of the coaching staff.

“I hope that’s not our best,” defensive coordinator Al Groh said. “You have to keep moving forward all the time. If you stall, you’re losing ground. Some players [moved forward], but not enough.”

Coach Paul Johnson said that practices have for the most part been decent, but that the team “hit a doldrum. You have to push through.”

The Jackets will have two more practices Wednesday.

After 13 practices in 12 days, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy said that many players’ legs are heavy, “but that’s no reason not to push through, so we’ve got to come back [Wednesday] with our minds set to push through and get better at practice.”

2. A bronze statue of former Tech coach Bobby Dodd is scheduled to be unveiled Sept. 14 on Callaway Plaza outside the stadium that bears his name. A group of Dodd’s former players led the project to honor Dodd, one of only three people to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. The bronze sculpture, which will portray Dodd in his familiar kneeling position, will be dedicated the day before the Tech-Virginia game. At that game, Dodd’s 1952 team, which went 12-0 and shared the national championship, will be honored.

“Not many times in your life do you get to do something like this, and it’s really been very meaningful to all of us,” Tech Hall of Famer Taz Anderson said.

3. Wide receiver Jeff Greene and cornerback Rod Sweeting returned to practice Tuesday after being held out with injuries. Other than that, the list of players out remained the same, Johnson said. That would include B-backs David Sims and Charles Perkins and offensive tackles Ray Beno and Morgan Bailey. Johnson deflected a question about a possible cutoff date for Sims, recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his shin, to return by in order to play against Virginia Tech Sept. 3.

“He can’t practice until he’s healthy,” he said. “We’ll figure it out when we need to figure it out.”

4. Wide receiver Anthony Autry’s play in camp has made him a strong candidate to play as a true freshman. Autry, from Norcross High, is competing with freshmen Travin Henry and Micheal Summers and four returners for spots on the depth chart.

“We’ll decide here after Saturday who’s going to play and who’s going to maybe sit right now,” Johnson said. “I’d say he’s on the probably-going-to-play bubble.”

Thanks for reading. More Wednesday.

Actually, I don’t believe you’re really a GT fan. But as you said, everyone gets an opinion.

there is a difference between winning a championship and vacating it, and not winning one at all. So yes we did win a championship. And I agree with Big Stinger….if it doesn’t work out with Al, I don’t care what color the new DC would be…..recruiting-wise-in-Atlanta or not, I would want the best man available.

Groh should be on the hot seat,
from 9-4 and 11-3 under Dave Wommack,
to 6-7 and 8-5 under AL .

I have to agree with some of the comments about Al Groh. This year is put up or shut up year for him – especially now that GT is paying him real money instead of 100k or so while UVA pays his severence.
If the defense doesn’t show improvement under Groh, Randy Shannon would make a great DC at GT.

I agree. I like Shannon, but I think he just got hired somewhere as a linebacker coach.

Plus Wommack was 1-1 against the hokies,
with a disputed 3 point loss in Blacksburg on an offensive penalty which never happened.

GT’s defense will be better this year. If Offense finds 2 players to replace Roddy Jones and Steven Hill is should be just as good.

I am a GT fan. Probally know more than you do over the past 14 season. I am NOT CPJ fan. The guy is a joke. If he does not beat UGA in 2012( this will be his 4th lost in a row)then i think he has to be fired. If GT wants to recruit better and start winning ACC tiltes then beating UGA should be the number one priority!

In case you guys forgot CPJ hired CAG! Great hire coach fish fry(sarcasm)! Did he really think a 70 year old washed up coach from UVA could bring GT a great D? Some of you guys need to get your head out of CPJ ass. Forget about the the first two season. Those days are behind us!

The triple option should be a defense’s best friend, it keeps them well rested.
CPJ’s offense is not the problem.

Boddy Dodd is rolling over in his grave when we lose to UGA. I don’t understand how some of you people can be ok with losing to UGA. SO if CPJ never beats UGA again then his job is safe??

Get off your high horde, young man….some of us have been following GT football since the 60’s and 70’s, and some even longer.

I am glad that the Ga Institiute of Technology does not need your input as to who should or should not be on the football coaching staff.

Hey if your ok with the coach of GT losing to UGA then maybe you should be a UGA fan. Like i said i would be willing to sit down beside you in person and have someone ask us questions about GT football starting from 1998. I could be wrong and you might win but i like my chances.

@ GT1990

Then you could probably enlighten us all. What has GT done that’s so great on a national level in the past 14 years? What did Chan Gailey do with the program that is so much better than Paul Johnson? I’ve wracked my brain, and I don’t remember anything spectacular in the last 14 seasons. But since you know so much, please enlighten us. Oh, and since you’re going to fire Johnson, who are you going to hire? Remember, you’ll have almost no money to work with while we pay out Johnson and Hewitt.

I will say one thing here to GT1990, and after that I will ignore him…..You are a terrible representative of any institute of higher learning in this country, even UGA. Your spelling is atrocious. If you want your opinions on any matter to have any bearing at all, then you should learn how to spell. In all the posts you have made since you started however long ago it was, I think I have counted 25 relatively easy words that you obliterated with your poor spelling. You THINK you have all the answers about Tech’s problem, but in fact all you have done is demonstrate how stupid you are.

That is all I have to say to you.
