Notes from practice. More Wednesday.
1. Georgia Tech’s 13th practice of fall camp brought little good fortune.
A day after a double session and in afternoon heat, the Yellow Jackets dragged through a full-pads practice Tuesday that elicited the ire of the coaching staff.
“I hope that’s not our best,” defensive coordinator Al Groh said. “You have to keep moving forward all the time. If you stall, you’re losing ground. Some players [moved forward], but not enough.”
Coach Paul Johnson said that practices have for the most part been decent, but that the team “hit a doldrum. You have to push through.”
The Jackets will have two more practices Wednesday.
After 13 practices in 12 days, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy said that many players’ legs are heavy, “but that’s no reason not to push through, so we’ve got to come back [Wednesday] with our minds set to push through and get better at practice.”
2. A bronze statue of former Tech coach Bobby Dodd is scheduled to be unveiled Sept. 14 on Callaway Plaza outside the stadium that bears his name. A group of Dodd’s former players led the project to honor Dodd, one of only three people to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. The bronze sculpture, which will portray Dodd in his familiar kneeling position, will be dedicated the day before the Tech-Virginia game. At that game, Dodd’s 1952 team, which went 12-0 and shared the national championship, will be honored.
“Not many times in your life do you get to do something like this, and it’s really been very meaningful to all of us,” Tech Hall of Famer Taz Anderson said.
3. Wide receiver Jeff Greene and cornerback Rod Sweeting returned to practice Tuesday after being held out with injuries. Other than that, the list of players out remained the same, Johnson said. That would include B-backs David Sims and Charles Perkins and offensive tackles Ray Beno and Morgan Bailey. Johnson deflected a question about a possible cutoff date for Sims, recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his shin, to return by in order to play against Virginia Tech Sept. 3.
“He can’t practice until he’s healthy,” he said. “We’ll figure it out when we need to figure it out.”
4. Wide receiver Anthony Autry’s play in camp has made him a strong candidate to play as a true freshman. Autry, from Norcross High, is competing with freshmen Travin Henry and Micheal Summers and four returners for spots on the depth chart.
“We’ll decide here after Saturday who’s going to play and who’s going to maybe sit right now,” Johnson said. “I’d say he’s on the probably-going-to-play bubble.”
Thanks for reading. More Wednesday.

Your right on one thing George… Our talent is different because he can’t recruit …. Because of this unconventional offense…

I say fire Paul Johnson if he loses to Georgia AGAIN this year. Groh will need to go, too. Then bring back O’Leary and the Fridge. They would be putting choke-holds on the Dawgs in no time! Hell, O’Leary can beat Georgia with UCF talent.

@ gt4ever…….need I remind you that Gailey NEVER beat UGA and got totally blown out once. Do I want to be the dwags more than once? HELL YEAH !!! But in spite of the supposed difference in talent levels between the two schools, CPJ’s teams have been competitive every year except the second half of the 2011 game (I don’t know what happened then). Being competitive is not a win and is definitely not enough, but it sure as hell is an indicator that all is not gloom and doom.

Fair enough, Lee.
They won’t get the pub other players get because their production will look different. Seriously, after four years I’m blown away people still question the offense.

@GTFan2012 – “We all agree (besides the trolls that criticize A-back and B-back play) that the defense has been the problem in the CPJ era.”
Point of Order – In 2011, the O-line play was bad. Like the Falcons, Tech couldn’t make 2 yards when they needed to on 3rd and 4th downs. Not saying the D was good. But the O-line was responsible for a serious drop off in offense, especially at the B-back position.

@ Lee……don’t be too hard on gt4ever. I know he quite often comes across as a negative nellie, but I feel pretty sure he really does love the Jackets. He’s just a lot more unconvinced than the rest of us about CPJ. Let’s hope this season will finally win him over to the light.

Why is George’s comment silly…. I think its reality. If our B-back gains 1300 yards and a RB in a traditional offense gains 1300 yards, which do you think most members of the media and voters for these awards will value more? I know the answer because they said it in the past. The B-back benefits from the system, so his yards are less valuable (and these comments are made paying no attention to ypc or carries per game). Then the A-back position, if Orwin has 900 yards rushing on 110 carries and 20 rec. for 350 yards (Which would be almost unprecedented by the way), will the voters of these awards consider him more valuable than a RB with 1500 yards on 300 carries? I think George’s comments are totally valid?

crackbaby, I’m not quite as negative on that aspect as you were, but I see your point. The OL play last year was somewhat of a dissapointment, I’ll grant you that. I think it will be better in 2012.

the thing that really screws with my head the most about CPJ is in big games like UGA , he is always trying to do things outside his nature. In 2009 when we had 3 minutes to go in the uga game at home he called 3 long pass plays and then BAY BAY dropped the pass for a first down- when we should have stayed on the ground , then next year in athens we run run run then get in a tight slug feast and start flinging the ball again and last year was just a poor first half where we didnt come out ready to play and Richt had uga fired up and they ran & passed at will against our pitiful defense .CPJ needs to stop trying to over think and just stay with what gets him to the dance – he did the same thing against LSU in the Chick Bowl …enough trickery – just keep on doing what you do best – also if we pass this year dont just fling the long ball – hit your backs & short possesion passes to keep moving them chains – just my 2 cents …GO JACKETS kick a HOKIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everybody here knows you’re the idiot living in a world of delusion. Say what you want about Groh—we all know the facts. We on this chat board pull just as hard as you do for GT, but we are smart enough to know that Groh is AWFUL!!! You on the other hand can keep giving him 4-5 years to implement a system that isnt overwhelmingly complex and watch us get gashed week after week.

CPJ is 2 – 10 vs UGA, Va Tech and Bowl Game
Including 0 for the last 6
The one accomplishment, an ACC title, was stripped by the NCAA because of cheating.
The program remains on probation.
I guess that flies at Tech and can be spun into being successful
Would get you fired most anywhere else.

Let’s face it, Grantham and CAG started at the same time. Grantham’s D in Athens was better in his year one than CAG’s year two. I expect UGA to be a top ten D in their year three, whereas I can only hope CAG gets us to top 25 status. I am all for giving Groh three years to install, but perhaps his system is too overly complicated? The players’ comments all indicate that it is too tough to learn.

We didn’t have three minutes left when he started throwing in 2009. We had about 1:40 left. The drop happened with 1:22 left in the game. We ran the ball the first four plays of that drive (which began with 3:22 to play) and burned 1:30. You can say we shouldn’t have thrown deep, but I can’t agree that we should not have thrown the ball.
In 2010, he called a run play that we gained 40 yards on earlier in the game. UGA was ready for it the second time. We had no choice but to throw then. Last year I think we lost to a better team.

@ hedgepruner……for the most part I agree with you. TOO MUCH TRICKERY when it’s not needed. That really did kill us against LSU. We might have lost anyway, but he just got too fancy for his own good in that game. Maybe one pass against UGA at the end of the 2009 game, but THREE??? That still burns me, as does the end of the Sun Bowl game.
