Injuries shuffle Tech offensive line

Some notes from a Monday morning interview with offensive line coach Mike Sewak:

1. He said offensive tackle Morgan Bailey, who suffered a concussion late last week, was in team meetings Monday and wants to get on the field. He even told Sewak he hopes it is later this week. Ray Beno, who was out Saturday and Monday, is being pushed to return by the fact that Bryan Chamberlain is breathing down his neck.

With Tyler Kidney and Chamberlain working with the first group Saturday and Monday, Nick McRae moved out to right tackle and also tried Trey Braun there. Freshman Chase Roberts has been going at left tackle with the second string.

2. On center Jay Finch: “Jay’s doing well. I think Jay has probably picked it up the fastest and he’s picked up his pace and he’s done a good job of getting his pads low and playing through some tough times.”

3. Omoregie Uzzi had an excellent scrimmage and followed it with a strong Monday morning practice. Uzzi was “down the field six, eight yards throwing (blocks) and trying to chase after safeties on plays. He’s a guy that, when he’s on the field, he practices really hard.”

Having missed spring practice, Uzzi does have some rust to knock off and Sewak is being careful not to overload him physically in practice, keeping him out of some drills.

“I think we’re trying to get what we can out of Omoregie and keep him fresh because when he’s fresh and healthy, he moves around pretty good,” Sewak said.

4. Sewak is still of a mind to give backup guards Braun and Shaquille Mason playing time in place of Will Jackson (whose birthday was Monday) and Uzzi. The same will hold true with the tackles and their backups. Sewak said that Chamberlain is “coming along nicely” and will play this year. His progress over the next three weeks will determine how much he’ll play against Virginia Tech.

5. Sewak said he is seeing the upperclassmen in the group reach out to the younger players more than in the past.

6. An intriguing quote: “I think that I have a couple of tough guys that remain tough even when times are tough. I have a couple of guys who want to be tough guys, who, they’ve got to find out deep down inside what they’re made of.”

I’m not going to try to guess who he’s talking about, except that Uzzi is one of the tough guys. This fits in with what Sewak has said that the players have enough knowledge of the scheme and are hard working, and have to take the next step of being more mentally tough.

Practice notes later.

Chamberlain will play, and he’ll do well. There’s a reason he’s pushing Beno right now.

I love coach speak

“he’s done a good job of getting his pads low and playing through some tough times.” Means he stands up too much and he plays better after I yell at him.

“He’s a guy that, when he’s on the field, he practices really hard.” Means that when he is not on the field he is a normal person. – Well, DUH

“I think we’re trying to get what we can out of Omoregie and keep him fresh because when he’s fresh and healthy, he moves around pretty good,” Sewak said.” Means that when he is not fresh and healthy he stands up and because he is tired.

“Sewak said that Chamberlain is “coming along nicely” and will play this year”. Means if he doesn’t turn it up a notch ain’t no way he is playing this year.

“Sewak said he is seeing the upperclassmen in the group reach out to the younger players more than in the past.” Means that in prior years we had problems with players buying in to what CPJ wanted because they were not his recruits.

“I think that I have a couple of tough guys that remain tough even when times are tough. I have a couple of guys who want to be tough guys, who, they’ve got to find out deep down inside what they’re made of.” Means that if these wimps don’t get tougher they ain’t ever going to see the light of the field, except from the sideline or in the stands with their mamas.

Do you hear that?

If you’re a football fan, it sounds like music.

The OL is DEEP with a good pipeline of talent. The O will be good. IF Gotsis, Kallon, Keith and Green can contribute in some way this year our D will be better. If not, it will be the D, once again that is the achilles heel of this team. Barnes, Dieke, Cummings at DL and Days, Watts at LB are on the all preseason ‘have potential’ team. Its time for the DEFENSE to play with a major chip on their shoulders. Putting pressure on the QB is THE KEY to this season. If not I see another 7-5, 8-4 season.

Edit – Good to read that Tr FR Pat Gamble is making some noise on DL. Would love to see Anthony Williams make some NOISE as well. He certainly ‘looks’ the part. DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!!!

[...] One development from Bailey and tackle Ray Beno being out is that players like Bryan Chamberlain are receiving extra repetitions at tackle. Nick McRae, Chase Roberts and Trey Braun have also been out there, offensive line coach Mike Sewak said in a previous post. [...]
