Depth chart, released Monday, updated from start of fall camp. Interesting to look at, but I wouldn’t go crazy reading too much into it. For one thing, it’s not final by any means. That said, to me, the most intriguing changes are Robbie Godhigh taking the lead in the A-back race, Jeremy Moore making the first string at wide receiver and freshman defensive end Patrick Gamble getting onto the depth chart (though I suspect he’s the No. 5 end, which could still mean a redshirt) and David Scully taking the lead at kicker. I suppose I’ve named most of the changes.
That said, take it with a grain of salt. I think part (or even a lot) of the purpose of the updates is for coaches to try to get demoted players’ attention.

Exactly DawginLex…. It will be hard for Vad to make the transition… The kid from Alabama may be a different deal… In time he may be one of those that couldn’t play QB anywhere else, and we were lucky enough to land him…. He could be our next Joe Hamilton… Time will tell, and these depth charts don’t mean jack this early into the season. Let’s look at them a week before we go up to VT…. Go Jackets!

I hate to say this being a GT fan but some of CPJ biggest in-state recruits seem to get caught in all CPJ and CAG lingo, schemes and excuses. Perkins was big time get, S. Green was a bigtime get, Snoddy was a nice pick up, Williams was big time as well as Bostic and others but their careers seems stallled? Is it the system? Makes you think maybe Tuitt did the best thing for him by signing with N. Dame maybe CPJ does better with 2 Star players and the kind of guy Navy recruits.

VT Hokie,
Beamer must not be very “smart” then, because all the “smart” fans claim that the extra preparation time helps to beat the triple option offense. But they are only spending an extra day or two on it. Doesn’t Beamer know the conventional wisdom is ALWAYS right!
(For the record, VT Hokie, I have a ton a family that went to VT including Dad, Grandfather, two uncles and two cousins… I’m just trying to tweak some of the “fans” on here that claim that GT loses games when the opponent has extra time to prepare for the triple option offense)

PLAYMAKER,
We could play this game all day long. UGA got Nick Marshall and Isaiah Crowell, who were even bigger busts than the guys mentioned above, who are all actually still playing for GT. What about a name like Jasper Sanks for UGA. My point is, all programs have guys that don’t live up to their potential for one reason or another. And I’ll further point out that every guy you mentioned is a Sophomore or junior this year. Hard to call a sophomore or a junior a bust before they’ve even played a down in their 2nd or 3rd year of eligibility.

Paul Johnson has said that now that he’s seen Francis Kallon on the field, he thinks he’ll be a First Round Draft Pick in the NFL some day, but he’s really “green” and would hate to burn a year of eligibity if he isn’t ready to contribute this season. However, he’s shown he is a tremendous presence rushing on the outside, so he may end up playing, especially if he works on Special Teams as well.
Gottis was thought to be able to come into play, and that’s still possible, but with the current depth at his position, they may try to hold him back as well. Pat Gamble is the biggest surprised, being described as “country strong” and is getting some serious looks.
Thomas, the QB from Alabama, is going to be tough to keep off the field once he learns the offense. He is electric and probably the fastest guy on the team in pads. He also can pass the ball very accurately and has great distance…

As Coach Lombardi famously said, ” To win in football, you have to beat the man in front of you. Don’t watch the scoreboard.”
GT’s success this year will largely depend on the O-line and the defensive front seven. Jackets have plenty of talent at the skill positions.
Everyone, including Va Tech, is in for a surprise on SEP 3rd.

Green is too small to make an impact. Barnes hasnt really done anything of note in 3 years. I hope Barnes has a breakout year, but i’m not holding my breath. I will believe it when it happens.

UOAD!!!! I posted this elsewhere, but wanted to put it here, too. I want to dispell one of the biggest myths on here, and that is regarding the size of GT’s DL. WE ARE NOT UNDERSIZED no matter how much certain posters try to convince us. Here’s proof. Here are the weights of the starting DL for three teams that run the 3-4 (listed DE NT DE).
300 280 285
275 345 300
309 351 269
295 307 284
Ok, do you see any differences? If you do please point them out to me, because I see very little difference among the sizes of these players. And that’s really interesting, because 1 is GT, 1 is UGA, 1 is the Pittsbugh Steelers, and 1 is the Houston Texans. Now of course, the next argument will be (without any facts to back it up) that the talent level of the GT line isn’t up to the level of these other DLs. And that may well be true, but is not the primary argument that has been made about GT’s DL. Once again all analysis and FACTS, no trolling or manipulation.

I’ve read it plenty of times that TJ Barnes is a great student-athelete that works very hard, and has the desire to be great on the football field. He deserves a breakout year in the Gold & White. However, like kc above, I’m a little skeptical too. He’s been projected a few times in the past to be on the verge of something very good, but has yet to produce.
TJB might be the player I’m rooting for the most in 2012. Hopefully it’ll be a great season for this well-deserved young man!

I was speaking of Green’s height(not his weight). I’m not a troll. GT season ticket holder and fan for 35 years. I just don’t think either Barnes or Green will ever be the big time player that we need. I’ve watched both players play(Barnes at GT games and Green in high school) Just my opinion-i hope i am wrong. Go Jackets.

kc, wasn’t addressing your comments in particular. Actually agree that Green hasn’t lived up to expectations due to a number of factors including injury. But each year is a new year and gives these kids an opportunity to step up. Grenn will get his chances. Barnes, by all accounts, has much improved his conditioning. There were times last year when he looked like the best player on the field on defense. Unfortunately, those times were few and far between. He has a chance to step up, and I think he will. The NFL $$ can be an amazing motivator

I hope the Gotis kid can step in and back up Barnes at NT this year as he is a 20 yr old. He is listed as 6-5 300# DL not DE. I dont know where CAG projects him for the future but looks like we are thin at NT vs DE.

I want to see Gotsis play some nose guard/NT. He has good size/speed, and he excelled at Australian rules football (in addition to “gridiron”) — which means he has to be lightning quick and have a heckuva mean streak! Anyone who has ever watched Aussie rules football understands exactly what I’m talking about. Gamble, Gotsis, and Kallon on the line in a year or two will be absolutely awesome. With a defense like that and the current offense (with a bit more passing), it will be time to start thinking of seriously going for a 5th NC in 2013 and 2014!
But for now, just focus on 9/3!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO JACKETS!!!!!!!

Barnes according to our guard WJ is “quicker”, but he certainly isnt going to play every down. I want TJ to have a breakout year as well but he will need a blow from Green and maybe Gotis if he can handle it.

Unlike some on here, I live in the now. Yesterday is gone & can’t be redone. Tomorrow is just that. TOMORROW!! We have very little influence on what will be. Therefore, all we have is now–today. Someone said TJB looked real good against Clempson last year. He did, But, that;s last year. For the now: from all indicators that I have seen over the summer, he is looking like he may finally be ready to go. I think & hope so. I wish him all the best this year. With his size & strength, he can be a beast.

And I agree about ‘13 and ‘14,
Look at the OL also– when the 2 tri cities kids Devine 6-6 350 and Hall 6-3 335 arrive along with the Oreilly 6-3 313 today, before they put on more weight and muscle. Add the young guys already on the roster and we will for the first time have serious road grade size!
Vad or JT will have size and talent up front. You may not need 4 star talent at RB and WR with this line up front.
DL — I agree looks good going forward with Kallon, Gotis, Gamble, Green, Commissiong.
Future lookin better than 2 years ago. 2014 schedule is brutal!
As for Now—Thank God for football in 20 days!
2012 GT football team is net better than 2011, OF,DF, and ST. I hope VT has lost more on OF than they gained on DF with ST being the same.

I keep reading the blogs and keep seeing folks talk about academics as an issue. It is an issue, but not because a kid is an academic qualifier or not, but what does this 17/18/19 young man want to do if he does not make it in the Not For Long League. Tech does not have 95 majors like some state schools. To young men whos chose UGA were qualifers at Tech, one wanted to study Pre-Pharmacy and the other Journalism. Last I checked, we do not have Pre-Pharmacy as a major nor Journalism. Yes, the kids go study biology or chemistry and then go to Pharmcy school, but with that major being a 7 program, not many guys will chose Tech for Pre-Pharm. Let’s look at what the young men coming to Tech want to be, an entrepanuar, finance major, account, astronaut, building contract, yes we have that covered. PE coach in high school, director of family life services, probably not. So stop with a guy not coming to Tech even if he qualifies academically as a reason to be moan us not getting some recruits. Let’s face it, it is easier to get into Tech, than sometimes to graduate. GO Jackets!!! THWG!!!

Jacket Man – Thanks for the ‘inside’ comments. Obviously Kallon needs to redshirt to learn the defense but with his natural size and athletic ability he will probably be a 1’st round draft pick after his Jr or Rso year. I would rather have him for a ‘rough’ learning year this year being a beast on ST and two more years to ‘wreak havok’ than to RS this year and have him play for only two. See Moreno for UGA.
