Updated Georgia Tech depth chart
Depth chart, released Monday, updated from start of fall camp. Interesting to look at, but I wouldn’t go crazy reading too much into it. For one thing, it’s not final by any means. That said, to me, the most intriguing changes are Robbie Godhigh taking the lead in the A-back race, Jeremy Moore making the first string at wide receiver and freshman defensive end Patrick Gamble getting onto the depth chart (though I suspect he’s the No. 5 end, which could still mean a redshirt) and David Scully taking the lead at kicker. I suppose I’ve named most of the changes.
That said, take it with a grain of salt. I think part (or even a lot) of the purpose of the updates is for coaches to try to get demoted players’ attention.

I am not a huge fan of Tevin Washington. He is solid I suppose, but lacks big play ability. Maybe it is more about Lee and Days not being ready yet, but Tech still hasn’t had a fast QB since PJ got here. His most prolific offenses came with fast QBs that threw reasonably well.
Washington, Nesbitt are not fast by any means, though obviously Nesbitt had the strength to break tackles and get that extra yard or two. Washington isn’t fast (for an option QB) and not all that strong. He is just…solid/adequate? I am hoping we get more speed at QB one of these years so that option keeper has the chance to go the distance instead of simply a decent gain.

Do you really think Johnson would pull a Chan and start Washington if he thought someone else was better? I don’t. Days or Lee will start as soon as Johnson thinks one is the best quarterback.

@ Michael, I have to agree with you. I don’t see big success until we get a QB that is both tough and fast. Really hoped that VLee was the answer, but at this point it doesn’t apprear to be. If we have to stay with TWashington, I think we are looking at 8 wins, If we can get SDays or VLee going we could see a 10 win season.

Not excited bout season. I would give up this season to see PJ go.It is going to be ulgy when we lose to VT. As always when teams have time to work on stopping this offense the results are the same. VT will be first of many this season.

Tevin is as good as the team around him.
Had we made the extra point in 2010 archrival game to force a 35 tie, maybe the added pressure leads to a turnover and 38-35 win.
Everyone would like him a lot better had the ST not come up short then and on other occasions.
Give Tevin a few more Ws that inadequate STs have cost us and there would be less gripping or knocking of his skills.
Clemson was pretty good last year and Tevin had his best game as a college player.
Uncalled offsides on Clemson prevented a blowout win but actully made the game more fun and game Jamea Thomas #14 a chance to save the day with a great pick.
Tevin was cool under pressure and did not give Clemson a chance to get back in the game late.
I would like to encourage Tech fans to stop gripping about every dropped pass, among other things.
When Uga had two bad years, every one at their college, from college president on down to janitor practically, got thrown undert the bus every week.
Buck up and show some mettle this year.
Stop the whinning about dropped passes.
Our WRs have more pressure because they get fewer chances.
I could complain about CPJ not doing better with STs but he is our best coach since Dodd with the possible exception of Ross. Why should I like Ross when he told Swilling to turn down the money and stay which hurt him by about 3 or 4 draft rounds.
Then what did Bobby Ross do?
Took the money and ran.
Another do as I say, not as I do advice giver.

I remember the QB debate concerning Jack Williams or Eddie McAshan.
Williams was the confident and competent QB like Tevin vs those who wanted to get Eddie ready for the future. Though Eddie had more skill, he was not ready that year.
I really hope we get Days on the field as a runner.
Or have him run a play or two at QB where he looks most likely to run which actually is his drawback as QB.
The problem with him looking good as a runner during spring games is that is what he already excells at. He needs to work at making the best decision.
The reason Tevin is the guy is he does all that is required of a QB in our offense better than the others.
The others may be better in one area but none of them are better all that is demanded taken together.
I am hoping we will see more of the Tevin we saw in the Clemson game.

I don’t get it.
Brodrick Snoddy, the fastest offensive player on the team, and Nick Menocal, the fastest defensive player on the team, and they are nowhere to be found on the depth chart.
And don’t get me started about Justin Thomas being red-shirted. CPJ is on thin ice. If Thomas isn’t ready to play QB, put him at A-back or WR. He’s the 2ed fastest player on the team{behind Snoddy) and the best open-field runner. CPJ doesn’t have the luxury of leaving talent sitting on the bench.

I agree.
You have to trust your coaches and stop thinking you know more from a limited viewing than the coaches who see the players ten times more.
Tevin has the full package.
But this is a team game.
When we get beat on the line of scrimmage, the QB and backs are not going to look good.
Remember the NC State game of 2010.

I was angry that Nesbit spent a lot of the game running for his life.
And that Russell Wilson picked us apart
Terrant’s pick 6 prevented a home blowout loss.
Some will argue this but I think graduated seniors with a year left of football should get into our grad school.
We are about the only college that would not find a place for the two lineman we gave Ga State that year.

I hoe Vad Lee develops into a super-star QB; however, the most recent updates suggest he is struggling at best……………………….Justin Thomas (super fast QB from Alabama) might just be the future at QB; can you imagine a sub 4.3 QB playing this position with a solid OL and the talent we currently have at A-Back and B-Back?? WOW

No need to rush Lee or Thomas.

Georgia Dawgs……….My guess on Kallon is that he has not cracked the top 2 on the depth chart. That seems to be the purpose of Tech’s depth chart. Safe bet, unless he is hurt and then he would hold no place on the depth chart.

If we had Lee and Thomas when Nesbit was enetering his junior year in 2009, we would have folks saying play the youngsters and build for the future. Saying that Nesbit’s passing deficiencies would keep the offense from working.
There are intangibles to the QB position.
Nesbit has them.
Tevin has gotten better with each game and I hope this is his year to shine.
While Nesbit was learning, he often looked bad in practice.
If Days wants to beat out Tevin, he needs to show he can do the other requisites of the job better, besides running.
That was why he hired a passing coach.

I am not going to make a prediction about our tackling in the VT game.
I will be very disappointed if we do not improve on how we let their big QB run through us at will.
I thought Attaochu’s bad play reflected on the defensive coaches.
Why not tackle the big guy low when coming at him from behind?

No Cam Newton-type talent will ever allow CPJ’s Offense to risk his NFL draft status/position.
And this is the CPJ conundrum, 6-6 250 lb. guys like Newton that can run & PASS will never let CPJ’s gimmicky Offense to put their potential NFL millions at risk by only passing for 13 times per game.
In this “chicken-or-egg” scenario CPJ will have to CHANGE first in order to get the Elite passing QBs that can also run, through 5 Recruiting classes we haven’t sniffed a QB that can do BOTH (with emphasis on BOTH), QBs like that have too many better options than GT for CPJ to remain so stubborn.
Look at the 2013 QB-class here in Ga., McCreary is going to Vandy and Jennings is headed to LSU, they both played their HS FB within a 30 min drive to BDS@HGF, both also Academic Qualifiers for GT, both are also thought to be Top-25 QBs nationwide.
It is not the Academics, it is not the lack of talent locally among GA. HSs, it is CPJ’s gimmicky offense, and no HS QB of decent pedigree will let CPJ risk what “little chance” they have at the NFL by trusting CPJ with their future development at QB.
BTW, Cam Newton was an Academic Qualifier out of Westlake HS (S. Fulton Co.), the same school that produced Pac-Man Jones (WVa.) who was also an Academic Qualifier for GT, but changed his mind at the last minute and signed with WVa. or else he & his troubles would have ended up at GT. (I add this last paragraph for those among the GT Fanbase that like to play the Academics Card all too frequently)

Sean – Just curious, how do you see 9/3 playing out?
As it relates to extra time to prepare, I read that we’re sticking to our normal August schedule, and the result is that we’ll only spend an extra day or two on prepping for this game.
I haven’t been very high on our defense in a few years, and I will say that we’re finally back. Strong front 7, and lots of depth on the line. Secondary depth is the only question mark, and that won’t be a problem until UNC. I’m not predicting a blow-out, as GT always plays us strong, but I will be very surprised if they pull this one out.

I see a close game that could go either way with an edge to the home team. It’s strength against strength with our offense against your defense. We’ve had success in the past, and we return a lot of pieces, but so does your defense. I think it will come down to your offense against our defense. The QB is a beast, but you lost a lot os starters especially on the OL. We return a lot on D, but they have to play better in CAG’s third year. Which ever of these two units does best will be the winner.
