Chaunte Lowe’s bid for a medal in the women’s high jump, as the Georgia Tech grad finished sixth Saturday at the Olympics. After clearing 1.97 meters (appx. 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches), she failed in three attempts to clear the next height, 2.0 meters (6-6 3/4), and was eliminated.
Russian Anna Chicherova, the world’s top high jumper this season, won gold at 2.05 meters (6-8 2/3). Silver went to American Brigetta Barrett (2.03 or 6-8) and bronze to Russian Svetlana Shkolina (also 2.03). Lowe was a medal favorite, having won the world indoor title earlier this year.
Lowe’s best jump this year was 2.01 (6-7 1/4), achieved at the U.S. Olympic trials.
