Who’s involved: Junior Tyler Kidney and sophomore Morgan Bailey.
Who’s starter: Ray Beno at left tackle. Bailey and Kidney are competing at right tackle, with Bailey in the lead.
What coach Paul Johnson says: “Morgan Bailey would be the starter right now, he and Ray Beno. … We always knew [Bailey] was a pretty good player if he could stay out there.”
Comment: Kidney, a former walk-on, started six games last season in a three-tackle rotation with Beno and former Yellow Jacket Phil Smith, who transferred to Central Florida. As noted by Johnson, Bailey has had difficulty staying on the practice field because of injuries. However, he stayed healthy and impressed in the spring and has to this point outplayed Kidney. The decision isn’t final, and upcoming scrimmages will undoubtedly be important. Further, coaches may go with a rotation as they did last season. But the arc of Bailey’s Tech career continues to rise.

Injuries can always happen. It’s good to know that Tyler is right there, ready to take the spot when needed. Who knows, in a few weeks he may claim the job anyway.

I love the depth on this year’s O-line. Not a freshman to be seen on the two-deep. Finally! Look for strength of the O-line to continue as CPJ has finally been able to get us into a position to redshirt a handful of three stars every year. I’d take a RS-Senior three star over a true soph 4-star every day of the week. They might not have the nfl potential of a 4-star, but a 23 year old mind and body is way more mature than a 20 year old.

Red shirt Freshman Bryan Chamberlain, from Albany, GA, had a great Spring and might see time at Guard and Tackle. The depth on the Offensive should be a strength of the team this season, meaning the offense could be very effective on all facets of their game, including the passing game. Because of the experience and depth of the Offensive Line, Paul Johnson is finally comfortable installing and using those additional wrinkles to the passing attack, such as running plays out of the pistol and shotgun formations. These will be the ones where I would expect Vad Lee will be “introduced” into the Jacket Offense, and then he’ll be shifted back under Center to run the option from those formations as he stays on the field. This will eventually move him into the starting QB role. It will all start at the LOS, and experience with their triple/flex option along with the depth that’s been built up will be the difference.

Hope to see Bailey deliver on all the praise he gets; so far he’s been like a broke down “Hot Rod” parked in the garage!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERSIZE!!!!!!!
But as to the topic, I really hope that the new S&C program pays off this year. If the OL can stay healthy, things could get very interesting rather quickly. We finally have some serious size on the line, and everyone on the 2-deep has some experience, so this should be one of the more solid units.
But I’m not worried about the offense anyway — it is the Defensive Line that worries me. I’m hoping that CPJ doesn’t just redshirt all of the new guys because a few of them (Kallon and Gotsis in particular) appear to be ready to make a significant contribution already. All we need is for the defense to be an average Div-1 Defense, and Tech will be too much to handle for most teams. If we can have an average to slightly above average special teams group too, then things could suddenly get real interesting real quick!
GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, 230gr !!!
yeah, I agree with you. I would assume any decision about Kallon and Gotsis will be Groh’s, and that CPJ would accept his recommendation.
BTW, are you a season ticket holder? Whether you are or not, do you go to any or many games?
Not Disappointed!

Sounds like Morgan Bailey may get the nod…must be a better knee diver. That is what the pros are looking for…knee divers NOT!!! Why would any legit O-Lineman go to Tech? Not to mention the danger involved in playing in the ghetto.
