Georgia Tech competition breakdown: Wide receiver

Who’s involved: Senior Chris Jackson, junior Jeremy Moore, sophomores Jeff Greene and Darren Waller, freshmen Anthony Autry, Travin Henry and Micheal Summers.

Who’s the starter: Jackson and Greene are at the top of the depth chart, but neither started last year. The team is replacing 2011 starters Stephen Hill and Tyler Melton.

What coach Paul Johnson says: “We’ll know more when they start playing (in pads). We’ll see. I’m not worried about the receivers.”

What Jeremy Moore says: “I grew a lot from that (ACL) injury (in 2010), learned a lot, and I’m ready. I’m ready now.”

Comment: Potentially seven players are candidates to play, none with a single career reception. This is probably the most wide-open competition, though the starting jobs will probably go to two of the returning players. Greene, Jackson and Waller got time on special teams last season. In the spring, Jackson and Moore probably made the most progress, although Greene and Waller both offer impressive size-speed combinations. Moore added 10 pounds of muscle since last season to get to 190 and is eager to get on the field after battles with injuries. Consistency in pass catching and downfield blocking will determine the outcome.

Question is, not if but who will the next big name to come out of “wide receiver U.” I’m still surprised that Buzz Preston hasn’t had a head coach offer with the job he’s done here. He deserved the head coach gig at Hawaii.

If Waller actually is 6′6″ 230 (dimensions loosely quoted by CPJ some time back) he could really be scary if a: he has good hands b: runs his routes well c: has any kind of ability at all to separate from defenders with just a “tad” of speed. I’m curious to see this happen. It could be interesting. Good luck to all of them. For sure they all better be able to block or none of them will play. Look for some surprising big plays from this bunch…. GO JACKETS!!!

This group, less Jackson, combined with Lee and/or Thomas over the next few years will be fun to watch. Throw in the speedsters at the A-Back spot and the passing game should really compliment the option portion of CPJ’s offense moving forward.

If that really is Waller’s size, he doesn’t need speed. He SHOULD win every single one on one battle with a CB for a jump ball and he SHOULD be untacklable (?) by a 5-9 180 DB. He should literally have 10 inches and 50 pounds. This should be no contest. Remember, in CPJ’s time, he’s had a big guy for the balls downfield and a quicker shorter guy for closer to the line of scrimmage. I expect the same this year.

Receiving corp will be fine as long as (1) QBs get their timing down, and (2) OL doesn’t allow sacks that get offense in 3rd and 15 situations, and (3) running backs sustain blocks on outside rushers. GT may not have superstar stats emerge for one receiver this season but combined team effort will be acceptible.

it will be nice to have real games to comment on, maybe some of the silliness will diminish…it is time to see if the D can run what they are supposed to do, finally; the O, i feel it more a matter ofupdating it for the 21st C, more flexible passing out of the standard option-i.e., A-back/QB throws on a sweep?

I agree juvenal. There’s a lot more that we can do with this offense than just option left and option right. Perhaps we haven’t had the personnel, but with this being CPJ’s 5th year—these are all his recruits so we SHOULD have the personnel. Putting in short passes aka the Oregon offense, do a little no huddle, etc. would only put more pressure on the opponent’s D.

It’s all about down field blocking.

It will be interesting to see if Washington or who ever is at QB will be able scan the field and look for a target other than a single primary receiver.

I hope we have at least three or four receivers averaging two catches a game. Last year we had three recievers (and backs) that averaged 1 catch a game,

seems like the majority of passes by TW have been for 30 or more yards per attempt.Maybe that is why are passing stats are so bad.We need to develop a short passing game.

@ Dr. Nick……I think many of us agree with that, but in the past CPJ has said that if he wants short yards, he will run for them. Let’s hope that’s something else that he will change

“I’m not worried about the receivers,” Turkey Neck. What he’s really saying is “We don’t have a QB with a good arm, our receivers are chop blockers and I don’t like to throw the ball anyway.”

How much longer are you all gonna be stuck with this guy? The bar is so low that 7 wins is good enough?

The propensity of down field passing is to pull back DBs and open up the field for runners. It also positions blockers down field to support the runners

Good in theory, but our passing execution has been lacking, making the whole package less effective.

I would like to see an option for shorter pass worked in. Last year this was really just limited to screens and sort curls. I am not smart enough to understand how the short pass threat effects the over all running game: opening up the field, confusing LBs and CBs, removing potential blockers, ect.

One thing is for sure with no one having a career reception the defense is going to have to be honest until someone stands out after a few games. This could be an advantage in the early contests especially Va Tech.
