Tech picked second in ACC Coastal

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech was picked to finish second in the ACC Coastal Division behind Virginia Tech in a media poll at ACC Media Days. Florida State received 60 out of 95 votes to win the league championship.

It is a seeming ritual of the ACC kickoff event to pick the Seminoles to win the league, only to see them fall short in the season. Since 2005, when the league split into two divisions, Florida State has been picked to win at least the Atlantic Division, if not the league title, six of seven years. The Seminoles have made it to the ACC title game twice in that span.

Ten voters picked the Yellow Jackets to win the Coastal and three picked them to win the league title.

Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins narrowly defeated Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas as preseason player of the year, 25 votes to 21. No Georgia Tech player received any votes.

Win on Labor Day and prove, once again, how dumb the media polls are

Wow, Florida State receiving all the hype yet again?

Clemson will win the Atlantic, and we will win the Coastal.

I’m shocked that, once again, VT & FSU are picked to win their respective divisions, LOL!

I can understand VT, b/c at least they have won the Coastal quite a few times. But to continue picking FSU is becoming commical.

VT losing 4 starters on the OL, their top 2 WRs, and one of the ACC’s best RBs …… I like the GT pick. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see UVA or UNC win the coastal either. I’m saying either GT or UNC wins it.

I like Clemson from the Atlantic, and if not the Tigers then either FSU or NCST.

Looks like UNC got more points than us 341>328, but I guess we got more winning votes so we win? This is like Heisman trophy voting

The game on Labor Day will pretty much deccide the Coastal…lose that game and it is going to be a long hard slog of a season. G Tech matches up will with V Tech, the games are always close.

I guess the perception is that FSU gets the best talent, so they will have to rise back to the top eventually…keep picking them every year and you will be right sooner or later.

I’m not stunned by the FSU prediction….not sure VT can beat GT and Clemson in the same year, though. Guess we’ll have to play the games anyway!

Does Chuck Oliver still have inside information that FSU is definitively moving to the Big 12?

Believe it when I see it. FSU winning the ACC.

Tech picked second is fair for the media. VA Tech has owned the Jackets pretty much. Will be even sweeter if the Jackets can rise up!

i see gt beating vt labor day and winning the coastal.

this MIGHT be the year fsu finally lives up to the hype.

if so, then i’d expect them to win the acc cg over gt.

it can still be a great year for gt in 2012.

12-2 has a nice ring to it.

Hey Georgia DAWGS….

If we can use last season’s TOs as a metric for this season it looks like Tech will be okay…

19 Turnovers Lost — T32nd in FBS

But UGA…not so great…

25 Turnovers Lost — T80th in FBS.

Both teams have room for improvement….however if you change “no defense” in your post to “no 3rd down defense” I would have to agree with you.

I think that’s the same kind of philosophy media members took with the Braves during their title streak. They kept picking against the Braves for several years before the Braves finally lost the division, probably thinking, “No team can keep winning its division forever.”

Just beat VT and then one game at a time!

VT will be GT’s best opening opponent, by far, under PJ, but I’m liking more & more VT’s lack of OL, WRs and RB from the 2011 team come September 3rd.

@ VT’s house is a big advantage for the Turkeys, but I have faith in PJ. Nothing like a solid, deep & experienced OL to go on the road with. QB is experienced, as well as Orwin. Long, methodical drives, silence the crowd, and get the W! Easier said than done, but definitely a winnable game for the Jackets.

For all the betters, GT will be an underdog. Depending on the #, this could be a game to bet the house on???

The 1st game will be very important for the balance of the season. I know the players are focussed.
