Paul Johnson at ACC Media Days

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s optimism regarding the 2012 season didn’t cause any jaws to drop, given the hopeful talk that every coach at ACC Media Days offered Monday. Regardless, with fall camp opening Aug. 3, Johnson sounded like a coach who likes the work his team has done over the summer.

“I love the attitude of our team right now,” Johnson said in a 47-minute interview with a gaggle of reporters.

Johnson was pleased with the reports he has received about new strength and conditioning coach John Sisk, hired in May to replace Neal Peduzzi. He also expressed his optimism about new special-teams coordinator David Walkosky, Johnson’s first special-teams only coach.

Regarding special teams, Johnson said he sees a difference in attitude among starters.

In the past, “it’s kind of like they’ve done it because I think they knew I kind of wanted them to and it was expected,” he said. “Now they’re more excited to do it than they have been in the past.”

Johnson said he’s gotten glowing reviews from players about Sisk, who has made the summer workouts more fun for them.

“I think they’ve really bought into what he’s asking them to do,” he said.

Other items of interest from Johnson:

- B-back David Sims had surgery four weeks ago to repair a stress fracture but is “full go.”

- Of quarterback Synjyn Days and a possible move to A-back, Johnson said, “If he doesn’t beat Tevin (Washington) out in the first two weeks of fall camp, I don’t want him standing over there (on the sideline) in a baseball cap.” Johnson affirmed Days’ playmaking ability and his desire to get him on the field but noted also his habit of fumbling.

Johnson said Days needs to not play “like a wild pony.”

- A-back Orwin Smith will “probably be highlighted a little more than we have in the past,” Johnson said, while the other starter will be more of a role player. Deon Hill and Robert Godhigh are among possibilities, though Johnson will continue to use a rotation.

“The guy that blocks the best will be the one that plays,” Johnson said.

All Tevin has to do is complete one more out of ten passes, and it’s gonna be a great season.

Funny Dawgs, the defense returns 4 out of 5 major players in a secondary that topped the ACC last season, their best pass rusher in the LB Corps, and have some big guys sitting on that D-Line. I actually feel pretty confident that our defense will be just fine this season. You’re going to see many more mixed packages at GT this season, ranging from the 1-5-5, the 3-3-5, the 4-2-5 (common nickel), and variations on the dime with the 4-1-6 and the 3-2-6. And the best part is that the GT defense now has the depth and playmakers in the backfield to play around with these formations. For the past two years with CAG, we’ve been limited to base 3-4 situations, and occasional nickel and dime packages. Now, you’re really going to see a GT defense that mixes up its formations, and sends pressure from every part of the field. That is the best part about having an elite, young, playmaking secondary and the 3-4; you never know where the pressure is coming from on the field. CAG has been at this more than long enough to know how to disguise where pressure is coming from. Add in finally that GT is I believe the only team to run the 3-4 in the ACC. That means that any time you come up to face the Jackets, you are preparing for an offensive system you rarely see during the season, and a defensive system you rarely see during the season. And just letting you know now Dawgs, the Jackets might be copying the success of your defense from last season if Barnes in the middle can throw around his big 340 pound frame out there. Amazing what the 3-4 can do with a true NT in the middle. Oh, and good luck with all the high expectations this year buddy. I think we all remember how that turned out for your “incredible” team in 08. Can’t wait til Thanksgiving weekend. THWg

Right now I have three major concerns for this team, and that is it. 1) Can Barnes step up and be our primary NT? Every team that successfully runs the 3-4 at any level of football has to have a NT to plug up the middle and shut down the opposing teams running game. We saw last year against Clemson that Barnes can EASILY be that type of player. But he has got to be more consistent if the defense is going to be a top 25 defense

2) Can Tevin Washington find more consistency? Some people are going to blame other players on the team, but as far as I’m concerned, our offense is only going to go as far as Tevin Washington (or whoever ends up being the QB) takes us. He doesn’t have to be great. He simply has to be EFFICIENT. Make the right reads, throw decent passes, and the offense can be near unstoppable.

3) Who steps up at WR? I know I said TW will determine how far this offense will go, and I truly believe that, but who is going to step up and help in the passing game. The O-Line already looks better than ever, but the lack of established receivers is a concern. Look for Jeff Greene to finally realize his potential and become the next star Wideout our team needs.

Our offensive line is a strong point, and our running backs are going to do very well on the edge. Our defense will be markedly improved – linebackers and secondary especially. Special teams will be improved also. I think we are poised for a great resurgence in GT football. The recruiting is better than ever. We will beat VT in the opening game and have a great season. “I think that was the exact game plan that won Dooley and UGa a national Championship in 1980.

The only problem with that rosy logic is that you don’t have guys like Herschel Walker and Eric Crouch on your team. You’ve got a bunch of 3 star nobodies that chose Tech over Middle Tennessee State or Duke. Another flaw in that logic is that it is no longer 1980 or even 1997. It is 2012. Check your calendar. The game has changed a great deal. It is no longer sufficient to be good at just one thing on offense, such an option running game. You have to be balanced and multi-dimensional. That 1997 Nebraska team that you referenced could run AND throw the ball quite well. Defenses are too fast, athletic and savy these days to be successful any other way. Maybe not so much in the ACC, but in the big boy leagues that is certainly the case. You should know this by your team’s putrid performance against Georgia last year. What was it, 70 total yards in the 2nd half? You call that big boy football Techies? Our defense will probably face a stiffer challenge against Buffalo.

Class dismissed.

I guess I am one of the “negative nellies” about our season this year. I just don’t see the physical ability in Tevin, who by all accounts is a great guy and one of the hardest workers on the team – supposedly always putting in the extra time, sweat, etc. With all that said, I was hoping Days or Lee would supplant him. The fact that they could not does not leave me with boundless optimism.

Logan Thomas had the best game of his career vs. GT last season, and the Hokies needed every bit of it. Had Attouchu not committed the PF penalty, I fully believe the Jackets would’ve won the game, even with the Hokies going 13 of 16 on 3rd downs.

I agree with your comments, supersize. I was lumping passing ability along with read/react ability in as “physical” attributes. I’m not even close to being an expert, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that the TO was ….. slower (for lack of a better word) with TW running it last year. I know he’ll have another year of experience running the system, but I am not sure more experience is always the curative some on here feel it is. For example, if I continue to read all season about how the defense just needs more time in CAG’s system for it to be successful, I may have to give up the internet and go back to getting my information via fax and carrier pigeon.

Like I said, hope I am wrong. One thing – unlike recent seasons, we’ll know where we stand as a team pretty early on.

Ga Tech has the meat to stuff inside of unis and the new shotgun. Players have to earn the right to use the shotgun, and if it sputters, PJ will force them to revert back to the 3 op off with each l o s pass play sputtering at the l o s with a tackle for a loss, then a loss of game b/c no team can win by running only. Recently I thought that with the bevy of qbsTech has now, the one who gets to start might be the one who offers to take PJ’s garbage out for him if the qb’s get invited to a dinner at PJ’s house. Maybe TW takes it out to the garage, and that’s why he gets the starting role over Days. Now there’s Vad Lee, and Justin, and the kid from NJ, and one or two more. There is information overload with qb talent. Even pro teams go only about 3 deep with the qb position. Tech has about 7 qbs, some on the 2013 list. I personally would like to see a return to the unis Tech wore for PJ’s first year. Those were snazzy, and if Tech would have stayed in the all white ones for the Chick-fil-A Bowl, I believe we could have beaten LSU. Nesbitt was passing ok that year.

I would like for my alma mater Ga Tech to beat Va Tech because I am jealous of VT’s location where it’s nice and cool, where the students get to cool off earlier in the Fall, where the guys get to go out to the closest national parks for a cool mountain picnic with their coed dates and the picnic baskets with the checkerboard picnic cloth and homemade food of fried chicken and potato salad, and the scenic leaf change, whereas Atl is much warmer than the Blacksburg area and just not as comfortable outdoors. I believe Va Tech wins games against Ga Tech just because of this reason. I remember when pycho Cho had just gone on his rampage at Va Tech, and seeing one news clip of the VT campus, and it was snowing with flurries. Of course the cool climate didn’t do anything for psycho Cho. I guess that was one of the reasons why he was psycho.

5150 – think rs would help Kallon too since he only played a year of HS football. It just seems tempting to have him avail for pass rush situations , an area we have problems with. A third down pass rush sub doesnt need a lot of experience, just keep containment , watch for screens, etc.

chas_jacket I have been trying to get Kellon and Gotsis to contact on the FB before Gotsis gets here. They could be GREAT together. They are both Queen’s English speakers and have some thing in common. Kellon’s family is now all here in Ga so i hope that can be a support for Gotsis. They both have some great natural ability but both need to LEARN the GAME American style so they can Learn together and give us 4 years of fun football.

Tech/App St fan ….

Logan Thomas had the best game of his career vs. GT last season, and the Hokies needed every bit of it. Had Attouchu not committed the PF penalty, I fully believe the Jackets would’ve won the game, even with the Hokies going 13 of 16 on 3rd downs.

Sept 3rd will be the first college start for 4 OL, 2 WRs, and the Hokies’ replacement for David Wilson.
_____________

GT loses 2 starters on the DL, 2 starters at LB and 1 starter in the 2ndary.

GT loses both starting WRs, Roddy’s blocking at A-back and starting OT.

VT’s weakness on the OL might be offset by out weakness on our DL.

Behind the inexperienced DLs that we will have to start are even more undersized, unproven “tweeners”.

Even with 4 new OLs, VT still might have an advantage vs. our DL.

Thank you for finally expressing your opinion in a civilized manner. The key word there is MIGHT. The offensive line is much more assignment-oriented, and replacing this many starters usually takes a team several games before the linemen learn each others tendencies and begin to ‘gel’. That is why most coaches schedule cupcakes early. I think all GT fans are wondering how the D-line will perform this year.

Great move by CPJ to get a Special Teams Coach. I can see us returning a kick and punt for td’s against UGA, maybe recovering an onsides kick in the 1st half, and winning by 14.

Richt is too dumb to get a Special Teams Coach, so outsmart the guy like South Carolina, Michigan State, and LSU did by destroying him on Special Teams.

I hope this is understood right.
Africans value EDUCATION a lot. money is important but they KNOW the future is grounded on Education.
African Americans are more about “Show Me The Money”.
Many Americans play the game to get the NFL money and not the Degree.

I’ve been “more” civilized for many months now, but others (not you) don’t seem to treat me that way in return.

Also, we are very thin at Safety.

I. Johnson is up-and-down, Holton is coming off of a ruptured achilles(sp?) tendon, he was 4.6 guy before the injury and we don’t know how well he’ll be able to run & cover after that injury, and behind those 2 guys are some very green players with not much game-action.

I wish they would move Noble to Safety and maybe cross-train Lou Young at Safety to cover for past recruiting mistakes.

We will get exposed if we try to get through a season with our depth chart at Safety.

Marcus Allen is 6-2 205 was recruited at LB by many schools and is projected to play B-Back for us, maybe he could fill in at Strong Safety for this season since we seem to have 3 B-Backs in front of him.

But then again, CPJ would never move guys to Defense at the expense of his “precious Offense”.

Don’t forget that Synjyn Days was recruited by most BCS Schools as a safety, he’s 6-2 215 & very physical, and yet if he doesn’t pan out at QB, CPJ wants to get him on the field at A-back, once again showing favoritism towards his precious Offense.

As a QB, ONLY Toledo & GT offered Synjyn Days, all of other his major offers were at Safety.

Will CAG be able to cook up a decent meal on defense when CPJ refuses to give him the necessary groceries?

Shaq Mason was projected to be a pretty good NT/DT in college, and we have plenty of OGs, yet we have ???? at our NT slot.

I think Kallon will be here for all 4 years- or at least until he gets his degree.

From what I’ve read about his parents they’re those kind of immigrants that value an education above all else. (The kind of folks that make this country great, btw.)

Remember he had to skip his visit to UGA to take his SAT….again?

Am I being “negative” or am I being honest, honest to a level that might upset some fans?

GT needs to “play to win” and STOP half-@$$ing it and trying to fool their fanbase by watering down the schedule and then acting like 7-8 wins is a monumental accomplishment.

Obviously you didn’t meet any warlords or despots over there that might have had upwards of 100K murdered just so they could rape the land for whatever wealth they could extract from it, all while using child slave labor taken as prisoners from those they might have slaughtered.

Meeting a White guy from N. Fulton or East Cobb is much different than meeting a white guy from the N. Ga. Mountains or Appalachia, especially if you are minority.

And I know there are similar situations elsewhere as well. I didn’t say that the people were happy about the circumstances under which they live. But from what I’ve seen on various TV programs, they take their happiness where they can find it and try to stay out of the so called rulers, read murdering thugs, as much as possible. The civilized world needs to go over there and clean house, but it is to wrapped up in their own tiny problems–tiny compared to the ruling classes going on murderous rampages at the drop of a hat. The people of Africa need a hand up in a big way.

We in this country are blessed that the revolutionaries in this country were men of honor and faith who wanted to build a country free of oppressive tactics (other, unfortunately, than slavery, of course). Most of the revolutionaries on the African continent were no better than the colonialists they overthrew.
