Tech’s APR scores widely improve

Twelve of Georgia Tech’s 17 teams improved or maintained their multi-year academic progress report scores. None of the teams fell below the 930 APR score that would put them in jeopardy of a ban from NCAA postseason competition. The football team improved to 974, which is the highest score achieved since the NCAA began tracking the scores.

Multi-year APR scores track eligibility and retention across a four-year period. The scores released Wednesday measured academic performance in the 2007-08 through 2010-11 academic years.

Nine of Tech’s 17 teams recorded perfect 1,000 scores for the 2010-11 year. The golf team recorded its eighth consecutive 1,000, a streak that began when the NCAA began recording APR scores in the 2003-04 year. One of the teams achieving a 1,000 in 2010-11 was the men’s basketball team, its first-ever perfect mark, notably achieved when the team had a coaching change and guard Iman Shumpert left for the NBA, but still finished the spring semester in good standing. The perfect score helped push the four-year APR up from 915 to 935. Had it remained below 930, the team would have faced penalties such as a postseason ban or a reduction in scholarships or practice time.

The best thing about this is that it shows what business Tech is in. Tech is trying to have an athletic department the Institute can be proud of; vice you know who that’s trying to build a university for which the athletic department can be proud.

Well, good to know CBG proved me right, even if my reading comprehension is a bit UGA-ish this evening.

Ex coach Hewitt’s lax control of his teams was the cause of Tech’s previously poor APR grades. That alone should have gotten Tech out of his “iron clad” contract. Thank goodness for CBG.

This may shock you but succeeding at Tech is just a tad more difficult then succeeding at UGA. The fact that our SA’s are scoring as well as they are is a great testament to our athletic programs and their emphasis on academics.

Maybe I’m understanding the data incorrectly, but on some rows, how is the 2011 4-yr score(1st column) less than the 2010 4-yr score(2nd column), when the most recent year (3rd column) is greater than the previous 4 yr score? Adding a higher number to an average should raise the average.

Adding a higher number to an average should raise the average.

It depends on the number being dropped from the 4 year average. Some team may have had a 1000 in 2007, but didn’t do as well the three years after that leaving them with a 950 4 year average. Then they get a 980 in 2011 but the 4 year average actually drops because the 1000 from 2007 isn’t included anymore.

GTBob, you are obsessed with UGA. The academic standards are just as high at Georgia as Tech. But you are so obsessed in your inferiority complex that you are continually trying to make excuses for Tech’s inferior football program. I know you can’t help it, but it is what it is. Sorrrryeeee

It amazes me how Dook can be the creme de la creme of ACC basketball and still score as the top ranked school on this list – and you guys think your academics are tough – oh yeah, I forgot, Dook takes non-qualifiers while Tech does not – RIIIGGGHHTTT….

Tech’ needs to admit foreign students to get their avg SAT scores up for incoming freshmen. There is only about a 100 point difference between UGA and Yech. At least UGA has students from the great state of Georgia…not China.

“About 10 percent of the freshmen admitted to Tech are from foreign countries. Tech received about 900 applications from China and about 400 of them earned perfect math scores on the SAT, said Clark, the admissions director.”

GT is usually around the 55-60% Georgia Residents mark. It would be higher if the state of Georgia could produce more competitive students. I am not really sure why you would rather have dumb students from Georgia then smart students from China.

Tech has majors in History of Technology, Sociology, and Management. And Tech students have the luxury of taking many of their harder classes at AUC schools and transferring credit.

Don’t fool yourself, every major NCAA school has majors that athletes flock to.

Tech Forever

John,

First the AUC comment….prove it. “I know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody……” Transfering into Tech is more difficult than getting in as a HS senior. Your comment, even if it does happen it’s so rare it’s not worth mentioning. And if blatantly true then I can promise you the BOR is allowing the same practice in Athens with students tranfering credits from DeKalb Community.

Second, you are correct that that degree program exists at Tech. You fail to realize that students in that degree program for the most part take the same math and science heavy core curriculum in their 1st two years as the engineering students.

Tech Forever

June 23rd, 2012

John,

You’re also correct in that Tech has the “jock major” just like everyone else. The difference is the jock major at Tech is the equivalent of a BBA from Georgia only with significantly more difficult math and science requirements in the core curriculum. The “jock major” at Duke? Sociology….which can be attained by taking College Algebra and Finite Math to fulfill the math requirements. Dare I say Georgia’s more closely resembles Duke than Tech? I dare do. Leisure Studies, Recreation, Humanities, African American Studies, take your pick.

The overall difference in the two schools across all departments is simple. Tech offers a logic based education where 1+2=3. Georgia, like the general public school system K-12 now days, offers a theory based education where 1 + 2 (MIGHT) = 3 but we won’t know until we write a paper about it, use Lexus Nexus for an hour or two, and decide how we all feel about that answer.

@John: Your comment about Ga. Tech students getting credit for taking classes at AUC schools are non-factual and you act like the AUC schools are easy. For your information Morehouse College is one of the top Liberal Arts schools in the country and if you think he coursework is easy over here come take a class. Don’t take pot shots at schools if you don’t know anything about them.
