Davies, Wren drafted on third day

On the third day of the Major League Baseball draft, Georgia Tech first baseman Jake Davies was selected in the 21st round by the Boston Red Sox. He was selected as a first baseman and not as a pitcher.

In the 30th round, center fielder Kyle Wren was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds. Wren is the son of Braves general manager Frank Wren.

Third baseman Sam Dove went undrafted. It’s the 12th consecutive year that at least four Tech players have been chosen in the draft.
Besides Davies and Wren, pitcher Luke Bard was chosen in the supplemental first round by the Minnesota Twins, outfielder Brandon Thomas was chosen in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitcher Buck Farmer was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round.

Davies led the ACC with 73 RBI, hit .326 and hit five home runs in the ACC and NCAA tournaments. Wren hit .256 with 10 doubles and was second on the team in runs with 56.

I’m surprised that Frank Wren didn’t draft his son since Schuerholtz was allowed to draft his son out of Auburn a few years ago even though he couldn’t hit a lick. When they finally had to cut him, John just gave him a job as manager of the rookie league team despite having no experience.

I am surprised that Sam Dove went undrafted although very happy he will not return to Tech to finish his Textile Engineering degree and play baseball. Some of the plays he made in the ACC tournament were really amazing – MLB level.

Tech should have an really good pitching rotation next year assuming Buck Farmer comes back. With Buck, Matt Grimes, Josh Heddinger, Cole Pitts, and Dusty Isaacs, we have 5 potential starters, plus newly discovered reliever Alex Cruz and returned from surgery Devin Stanton. We keep the infield together except for Jake at first and only lose Brandon Thomas from the outfield. Look for a better year in 2013.

Bill, did you mean Dove will return to Tech next year? I would assume Wren will return to the team as a 30th round pick is facing a very long road. He can come back, work on his focus (and not getting picked off), and improve his stock for the future. I think Farmer should return as well and get his stock up higher.

How did Dove NOT get drafted? He’s a great kid and good player. Farmer should have gone higher too. Not sure about these new rules. Hopefully the high school students who didn’t go in the first four rounds will realize the value of developing their talent. Tech has a few million dollar players who never made it. Everyone is talented at that level and the pyramid narrows quickly. I hope they all think about the options seriously. Wieters realized it and made the decision to go to school and was even more valuable. Good luck to all of them.

Yeah, but Danny Hall will still be there and history shows one can only expect so much.

I bet Wren will come back to Tech next year and try to improve his draft stock.

BABE Davies aka Capt. Krunch went to the best league. He is a sometime 1st baseman or a DH. He can’t RUN and is best suited for the AL.

Give Danny Hall credit. He took a decimated pitching staff and made a nice run through the tourney and then regional. Nobody was beating Florida down there, unfortunately that was a tough draw.

Buck has told several of his longtime freinds that he will probably return….Story sez new rules drove his stock down, tho Im not sure if it was signing bonus money he wants or what. Stay tuned.

Hey Ken S. wake up Dieke’s Dad was mauled by a police dog at a Wal-Mart in Fayette county.

see link from your own AJC:

I hope the player’s Dad will be OK and prayers go out to the family.

Someone put Dieke in touch with GT Grad & Lawyer Manny Aurrora (sp?) so he can go to court and take a financial bite out of Fayette County(pun intended).

Ken,
Make sure you cover the arrest of Corey Alford’s (LB at Georgia Tech) arrest on Friday, June 8. He was arrested for public intoxication, disordely conduct and obstruction of justice in Athens, GA last night.

To the comment above this.. GET A LIFE!
What is the point of covering that story? College students are arrested daily in Athens… what makes Corey any different? So what if he is a GT player?

@GT LB …….

Get a life is right! He made a mistake… He will have to live with the consequences… Hope CPJ doesn’t throw him completely under the bus… Coach has been known to throw players under the bus….
