Georgia Tech takes ACC baseball title

It wasn’t quite worst to first, but you could call it eight to great.

In a season in which it was frittered with injuries and a berth in the eight-team ACC baseball tournament was anything but a given, the Georgia Tech baseball team capped an unlikely run to its eighth ACC championship with an 8-5 defeat of Miami Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. They became the first No. 8 seed to win the tournament.

The Jackets, who earned the eighth and lowest seed in the tournament with a win over the same Hurricanes on the final day of the regular season, continued their pummeling of ACC pitching. Tech cranked out 15 hits, including base hits from five of the first six hitters to go to the plate in the first inning (the sixth was a walk). The Jackets took a 4-0 lead in the first half of the inning and led the entire way.

Josh Heddinger, Jarrett Didtrick and Zane Evans held off the Hurricanes, limiting them to five hits, all singles. Evans also went 2-for-6 with 3 RBI. Tech hit .331 over the four games in the tournament, which began with a Wednesday win over Florida State, the top seed and the top-ranked team in the country. Jake Davies, who hit four home runs in the first three games, went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.

The championship is the fourth for coach Danny Hall and first since 2005. Tech was just the third No. 8 seed to reach the final in ACC tournament history.

The Jackets, who were on the NCAA tournament bubble prior to the tournament, have removed all doubt by earning the ACC’s automatic bid. They will learn where they’ll begin NCAA play Monday at noon. The selection show will be broadcast on ESPNU.

I witnessed the Tourney in G’boro. I witnessed a “classiness” that I want to continue to be a part of.
I feel comfortable in the ACC.

League leading FSU went Owen G’boro (0 in G’boro), and Clemson went, well, Clemson. I hope they gave ole Swafford an ear full as they drove by ACC HQ in G’boro. He never gives them a fair break.

Great job by the Tech spring sports teams. Baseball, softball, and golf all captured the conference championship. The tennis teams played well, but came up a bit short of their overall objectives. We had some great individual performances in track and field, although we don’t compete in enough events to vie for the team titles. I hope we’ll see more championships coming in the fall and winter!

Congratulations Baseball Jackets! ACC Champs! It is about time more folks realized, what many have known all along, the ACC is about the best fit student/athlete wise for all the universities who currently belong in the ACC as well the two new members—Syracuse and Pittsburgh. All the schools are strong academically and the ACC overall (including all the competitive sports for both men and women) is solid. Amazing how many of the Tech athletes go on to do great things in Major League Baseball, the NBA, the NFL, the PGA and ultimately the game of life. Go Jackets and Go ACC!

Congratulations to Coach Hall and the entire squad on an outstanding week of baseball to first qualify and just get into the tournament, then go on a great run run to win the ACC Championship! Perfect time of the year to get hot and hope it continues into the NCAA’s.

I also prefer to have GT stay in the ACC and grow the conference revenues into the future, as I find all of this talk of jumping to the Big 12 by FSU and Clemson a big distraction.

As I’ve said before, I think the admin at both FSU and Clemson are wiser than the fans, and will make the right decision should they even consider an exit from ACC.

Congrats Beesball!!!!

As for the ACC, GET OUT!!!! You guys are missing HUGE parts of the story. If FSU and another school leaves (Clemson, State, whomever) and the 4 team play-off is passed the BCS will be re-negotiated. Right now the two schools of thought are 1) there will be no automatic bid conferences, or 2) the Big 12, SEC, and Big 10 will go from one to two automatic bids with the Pac 12 getting one bid and the final bid would be At Large. Either way both the ACC and the BE are on the outside looking in. I don’t want Tech to leave the ACC for the Big 12…..I’d much prefer the SEC….but either way survival on the football field requires us to leave the ACC if FSU and one other school does as well. And don’t forget the impact Notre Dame’s decision on all of this will leave. The recent ACC TV contract and it’s punchline of a dollar amount all but guarantees ND will not come to the ACC. They’re headed to either the Big 10 or the Big 12.

Now the best part of all of this is the silence of the SEC. I do not believe for one second Roy Kramer and the SEC will sit by and let the Big 12 move further east without a fight. I would not be surprised one bit if a pre-emptive strike to grab GT and someone else with a decent sized market came down the pike. I don’t think the SEC wants GT as much as they want to keep Texas and Oklahoma west of the Mississippi. Louisville, Houston, SMU…none of those would surprise. But it also wouldn’t surprise me to see them make a push at UNC and State leaving GT on the sidelines.

If those first two/three things happen and GT stays with Tobacco Road we night as well be “Tulane East” in 5 years.

Promethius, it was nice of you to respond, but please know this, my loss was heavens gain and I WILL see her again. Hate? I never said anything about hating anyone or anything, but I quess if I did hate anything it would be red and black, however hate is such a strong word and the only thing I truly hate is what is happeneing to our country. Now I so not know how I came across to you, but do not fret for me, I have lived 61 wonderful years and expect quite a few more until I make my youngest grow up…lol The point is, is that I expect you are a pretty good guy, but I do not know you and you sir do not know me….I am a bit crazy, but I have no time for true hate, and I am a happy person especially when Tech wins!! :) ) by the way I would like to thank all you military persons and their relatives for their service to this great country. I served my time in Johnston’s and McNamara’s war and give a double shout out to you that were with me. GO JACKETS!!!

If you guys want to see a truly disturbed person, check out the posts attributed to me at 5:39PM and 5:41PM. There was certainly nothing offensive in what he posted, but he is NOT the REAL Supersize. He has been using my name for the past month, and despite all the efforts by the AJC to ban him, he keeps slipping back in. And to make matters worse, earlier today he was posting under the name “A Person SMART Enough to know…..”. How could I tell he was the same imposter? Because he said some of the same things in those offensive comments attributed to SMART that he has said in posts he made and attributed to me. No matter where your loyalty lies, anybody (ANYBODY) who would continuously make posts using other people’s names is a sick sick person.
