Tech into ACC baseball finals

The Georgia Tech baseball team is in the ACC championship game for the first time since 2005 after a 5-1 defeat of Clemson in the Jackets’ final pool-play game Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Entering the tournament as the No. 8 (lowest seed) with a 12-18 league record, the Jackets won all three of their pool-play games, riding the superior play of first baseman/pitcher Jake Davies.

Saturday, Davies hit a two-run home run in the first inning – his fourth in three tournament games – that gave Tech a 2-0 lead that it did not relinquish. Davies also gave the Jackets six innings, holding the Tigers to one run, before Alex Cruz finished with three scoreless innings to seal the win.

Tech will play the Pool B winner at noon in Greensboro, N.C., for the league championship, which would be the Jackets’ eighth overall and coach Danny Hall’s fourth. Freshman Josh Heddinger is expected to pitch for the Jackets.

Tech’s opponent has yet to be determined. North Carolina’s 7 p.m. game against N.C. State will determine the opponent. If North Carolina wins, Miami will advance. If N.C. State wins, the Wolfpack will play for the title.

@ Taint, we got some BIG D-liners this year, and it looks like we’re getting some bigger O-liners for next year. At least on paper, things are looking very very good.

Georgia Tech added more beef to the offensive line as 325-pound Jeremi Hall committed to the Yellow Jackets Saturday night. Hall is the Jackets’ fifth 2013 commit.

Hall’s Tri-Cities teammate, Shamire Devine, committed to Georgia Tech earlier in the week. Between the two they add more than one third of a ton to head coach Paul Johnson’s offensive line.

Virginia Tech, Purdue, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and South Florida among others have offered the 6’5” Hall.

There is a wide discrepancy in how recruiting services view Hall’s talents. 247Sports ranks Hall as a 2-star prospect, Scout.com as a 3-star and Rivals.com as a 4-star. You rarely see recruits with three different evaluations from the three aforementioned services.

Ken- I hate to be that bitter Tech fan but the paper AJC coverage of the tournament has been less than UGA womens doubles, high school baseball, and even UGA baseball one in done. I know we are a smaller school and a bunch of engineering geeks but….

Davies should have been page 1 today- the young man is more than deserving
